Consider Joseph's Powerful Reflection on His Love and Divine Purpose. Are You Willing to Accept Unanticipated/Unwanted Roles God Has Prepared for You? MESSAGE SUMMARY: In this powerful reflection on love and divine purpose, we're invited to explore the profound journey of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. As we delve into this narrative, we're reminded of the transformative power of faith and obedience. Joseph's story, rooted in the Gospel of Matthew, showcases how God's plans often unfold in unexpected ways, challenging our preconceptions and inviting us into a deeper trust. The transcription beautifully illustrates the internal struggle Joseph faced, balancing his love for Mary with his sense of duty and the overwhelming responsibility of raising the Son of God. This narrative encourages us to consider how we respond to God's surprising interventions in our own lives. Are we ready, like Joseph, to embrace a calling that may seem daunting or even impossible? As we reflect on Joseph's journey, we're prompted to examine our own willingness to step into roles that God has prepared for us, even when they seem beyond our capabilities. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, God is working His will in my life. (Philippians 2:13). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV) 1) Joseph and Mary's situation: Matthew 1:18-25 - The story of Joseph considering divorcing Mary quietly and the angel's message to him; 2) Jesus as the Son of God and Son of David: Luke 1:32-33 - "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David."; 3) The virgin birth prophecy: Isaiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."; 4) God's guidance through dreams: Matthew 1:20 - "But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream..."; 5) Joseph's role as Jesus' earthly father: Luke 2:41-52 - The story of Jesus in the temple, where Joseph is referred to as His father; 6) The concept of adoption in God's plan: Ephesians 1:5 - "He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will."; 7) Jesus as Emmanuel (God with us): Matthew 1:23 - "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"); 8) God's overflowing love: 1 John 4:8 - "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."; and 9) The theme of obedience to God's commands: John 14:15 - "If you love me, keep my commands.". We Are Invited to Reflect on Joseph's Extraordinary Journey, As We Contemplate His Struggles Along with His Love and Joy MESSAGE SUMMARY: In this profound exploration of love and divine purpose, we're invited to reflect on Joseph's extraordinary journey. As we contemplate his struggles with an unexpected pregnancy and the weight of raising the Son of God, we're reminded of how God often works in mysterious ways. The story challenges us to trust in God's plan, even when it seems overwhelming or contrary to societal norms. This narrative encourages us to see beyond our immediate circumstances and recognize the beautiful symphony God is composing in our lives. It's a powerful reminder that our perceived limitations or fears don't define us; instead, it's our willingness to say 'yes' to God's calling that shapes our destiny. God's Timing Is Perfect, Even When It Seems Delayed MESSAGE SUMMARY: In this powerful Advent message, we're invited to explore the transformative story of Zechariah, an aging priest whose encounter with an angel shatters his hopelessness. This narrative from Luke's Gospel reminds us that God's timing is perfect, even when it seems delayed. As we reflect on Zechariah's initial disbelief, we're challenged to examine our own faith in the face of seemingly impossible promises. The angel's proclamation about John the Baptist - that 'none born of women' would be like him - emphasizes the extraordinary nature of God's plan. This story encourages us to remain faithful in our spiritual routines, for it's often in these moments of ordinary service that God breaks through with extraordinary revelations. As we journey through Advent, let's open our hearts to unexpected messages of hope, trusting that God can breathe new life into our weariest moments. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, God is working His will in my life. (Philippians 2:13). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): 1) Luke 1:5-25 - This passage tells the story of Zechariah in the temple, his encounter with the angel, and the prophecy about John the Baptist; 2) Luke 1:8-9 - Specifically mentions Zechariah being chosen by lot to enter the temple and burn incense; 3) Luke 1:11-13 - Describes the angel appearing to Zechariah and announcing that his prayer has been heard; 4) Luke 1:18-20 - Zechariah's disbelief and subsequent muteness; 5) Matthew 11:11 or Luke 7:28 - The Devotional repeatedly mentions "None born of women like him," which alludes to Jesus' words about John the Baptist: "Among those born of women there is no one greater than John."; and 6) Malachi 3:1 and 4:5-6 - These Old Testament prophecies about a messenger preparing the way for the Lord are fulfilled in John the Baptist, as mentioned in the New Testament. Since Creation, Jesus Has Come; and He Will Come Again! MESSAGE SUMMARY: As we enter the Advent season, we're invited to embark on a profound spiritual journey that connects us to the very foundations of our faith. This series, 'Firstborn,' takes us back to the dawn of creation, reminding us of God's masterful handiwork and His ultimate plan for humanity. We're challenged to confront the reality of human sinfulness and our deep need for a Savior. This narrative arc from creation to redemption beautifully sets the stage for the coming of Christ, both in His first advent as a humble baby and His promised return as the triumphant judge. As we reflect on these themes, we're called to examine our own lives and prepare our hearts for Christ's coming. How can we, in this season, align ourselves more closely with God's grand design for humanity?  TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, God is working His will in my life. Elizabeth approves of Jane's fancying of Bingley, saying that she has never before liked anyone that wasn't a bad choice for her. They then discuss the sisters of Mr Bingley, and though she is uncertain of their characters, Jane seems very fond of them. It is assumed that Bingley will eventually move full time to the area, and sooner rather than later as he took Netherfield house after seeing it for little more than 30 minutes. More is discussed of Darcy and Bingley's relationship. Darcy is clearly the superior of the two, not only in rank, but in intellect. Bingley is, however, far more likable.Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/IsaacBirchallvoKo-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Known as “America's first female cryptanalyst,” Elizebeth Smith Friedman was a master codebreaker who played a pivotal role in both world wars, but for many years, no one knew what she had done—not even her own family. Elizebeth didn't set out to be a codebreaker. In 1917, she was a 23-year-old English lit major, looking for an interesting job. That all changed when an eccentric millionaire whisked her off to his lavish country estate and recruited her to work on his passion project: finding the secret codes in Shakespeare's plays. Elizabeth scoured the texts alongside a tiny team of self-taught codebreakers. No hidden messages surfaced. But soon, the U.S. government came knocking with a slightly higher priority mission. Perhaps her greatest coup was when she uncovered a Nazi spy ring in North America during World War II. J. Edgar Hoover took credit on behalf of the FBI, while Friedman signed an NDA, never speaking of her achievements, and fell into obscurity. Records of what she had done were found in the National Archives annex in College Park, Maryland.

It's like 1492 all over again, but this time with rockets. Yes, the age of commercial space exploration is upon us—so what does that mean? That's the theme of "Stellar Singularity: Navigating the Space Economy" by bestselling author Elizebeth Varghese. She's our guest on this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast A futurist and the bestselling author of "[Block]Chain Reaction: The Future of How We Live and Work", Elizebeth invites us to view the dawn of the spacefaring economy with optimism. She outlines how every organization will need to understand, leverage, and operate in space, and how every company is becoming a space company. In Stellar Singularity, Elizebeth discusses how space exploration improves life on Earth, and how our definition of life and sentience needs to expand, making the case for an “Interstellar Magna Carta” to act as the framework for collaboration across countries and companies. She articulates “Principles to Navigate Space as Global Commons” and outlines the four leadership qualities needed during the space age…and much more. Praise for Stellar Singularity “A Grand Tour of the issues, options, promises, and challenges! Elizebeth touches every side of the multifaceted, and daunting, notion of a spacefaring economy. A fascinating read!” Dan Geraci, President, Voyager Space Services, Chairman, The Planetary Society. “A thoughtful, personal, well-researched, and timely piece of our human space exploration efforts… Read more about the space industry's history, cultural connections, influential socioeconomic factors, key technological drivers, and how space exploration benefits all.., directly and indirectly, in from Elizebeth's must-read latest work.” Dr. S. Anand Narayanan, Research Professor, Florida State University, Expert in Space and Medical Physiology, Global Health, Interdisciplinary STEAM Research and Education, NASA Fellow “Elizebeth Varghese may not be the first space philosopher, but she certainly deserves the title. Stellar Singularity integrates the technological aspects of our expansion into space with imperatives for human behavior—particularly economic, diplomatic and ethical behavior. Knowledgeable people outside of the traditional space enterprise can and must contribute to this next phase of human development. Stellar Singularity is the work they should begin with to appreciate its challenges and opportunities.” Gordon Roesler, Ph.D., President, Robots in Space LLC, and former DARPA space robotics program manager “This book is a must-read..it provides a great summary of historical and technological developments through to shifts in democratization, policy and value chain realization.” Steve Ramage, Chief Engagement Officer - Group on Earth Observations (GEO), Governing Board - Digital Earth Africa, Earth Observation Advisory Committee - UK Space Agency Elizebeth Varghese is a futurist, people & technology strategist, senior executive, and bestselling author. And we are glad to have you joining us today, Elizebeth, to discuss returning to the office, the great resignation, and companies potentially switching to a four-day workweek hybrid, all of that. Welcome Elizebeth, how are you? Elizebeth: Great, thank you so much, Carolyn. Wonderful and delighted to be here. Great to be back on here with Tracy as well, friend from a couple of years ago as we've been going through some of these pandemic podcasts. So thank you for inviting me and I am looking forward to this. Carolyn: Yes, well this one's going to be a fun one and it might get a little heated. I've already seen some stuff on LinkedIn. I'm like, oh, that gets my blood boiling about returning to the office. And I want to start off with a question, there's an article called "Three ways the future of work must change for federal employees." The article states that at the end of the day, we need to have an IT and HR Alliance. This was due to exceptional communication between the agency's chief information officer and HR functions. In your experience, is the relationship between IT and HR something government agencies need to improve on? And industry too? Does the Relationship Between IT and HR Need Improvement?Elizebeth: Now what we've seen, the pandemic is highlighted so nothing new. This was happening for a while. I have to preface it with that. Because I think in lots of our conversations we hear this thing about, hey, this is what the pandemic caused. The pandemic caused a lot of suffering and hardship for many people, but it highlighted things that were in play for many years. And the fact the intersection of HR data and how IT's using it and accessing it has been an eternal problem. It's been going on for many years. But things came to a head when we were forced to be virtual in the federal sector and in the commercial sector. People realized that that intersection hadn't really been explored. It hadn't been addressed. It hadn't been managed in a sufficiently coherent fashion. There were a couple of reasons for that and some folks in the federal sector or commercial, the reason I say that is because this is a universal problem. It's not endemic just to one sector and we should take that. But when the pandemic hit, there were lots of tropes. Even before that around what can be done remotely, what data can be accessed in what fashion, what is secure and not. What the pandemic highlighted is that those issues were not really based upon real cybersecurity issues or access issues or single sign-on issues. They were really managed or impacted by cultural constructs of where work can be done. A great example of this is if you think about our friends on Wall Street, you could not do investment banking or

Wade earlier this month, it had a meaningful effect on Democratic lawmakers. The Washington Post reported two weeks ago that the oral arguments "accelerated an urgency among Senate Democrats to fundamentally alter how the court operates.” Those attitudes, of course, were fueled in part by Democratic resentment over Republican abuses that created a dominant far-right majority on the high court. The article added that on Capitol Hill, "a growing faction, long hesitant to embrace structural changes, say they are now prepared to consider such moves.” It was against this backdrop that Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts wrote a Boston Globe op-ed endorsing expansion of the Supreme Court. From her piece: “For years, the Supreme Court's conservative majority — recently supercharged to 6-3 — has issued decision after decision that veers away from both basic principles of law and widely held public opinion. With each move, the court shows why it's important to restore America's faith in an independent judiciary committed to the rule of law. To do that, I believe it's time for Congress to yet again use its constitutional authority to expand the number of justices on the Supreme Court.Free at Last! https://www.christianitytoday.com/news/2021/december/kidnapped-haiti-missionaries-free-17-released-christian-aid.html “After months of fervent prayer and fasting by Anabaptists and other Christian supporters worldwide, every member of a group of American and Canadian missionaries held hostage in Haiti for months has now been released. “We glorify God for answered prayer—the remaining twelve hostages are FREE!” stated Christian Aid Ministries (CAM) today in announcing the good news.”

This episode features an interview with Jason Fagone, journalist and author of The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies. I wax enthusiastic about Jason's book, which features remarkable research, a plot like a historical novel, and deep insights into what I call the National Security Agency's (NSA) “pre-history”—the years from 1917 through 1940 when the need for cryptanalysis was only dimly perceived by the US government. Elizebeth and William Friedman more or less invented American cryptanalysis in those years, but the full story was never known, even to NSAers. It was protected by a force even stronger even than classification—J. Edgar Hoover's indomitable determination to get good press for the FBI even when all the credit belonged elsewhere. And, at all its crucial stages, that prehistory is a love story that lasted, literally, right to the grave. Don't miss this (long!) interview with Jason Fagone, or his book. Meanwhile, in the news roundup. Dmitri Alperovitch covers the latest events in what we just can't call the SolarWinds hack any more. There's no doubt that Microsoft code is at the center of the hack, though not because of unintended features; the hackers showed great interest in Microsoft's code. Dmitri predicts multiple executive orders from Anne Neuberger's review, and he hopes it means more centralization of federal civilian security monitoring and policy under the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Dmitri and I agree that the Congressional effort to turn the cybersecurity director position into a Senate-confirmed White House office is more trouble than it's worth. The Maryland law imposing taxes on Google and Facebook ad revenue is ground-breaking, and for that reason, it will also be heavily litigated. First time caller, first time listener David Fruchtman explains the tax and the litigation it has already spawned. Which came first, China's dream of a rare-earth boycott or U.S. nightmares of a rare-earth boycott? We ask Jordan Schneider, who suggests that neither the dream nor the nightmare is likely to come true any time soon. Is Australia going to war with Big Tech?  I take on Oz's link fee and end up siding, improbably, with Mike Masnick and Facebook and against the fee. Meanwhile, the Australian infrastructure protection bill is drawing fire from Microsoft. Dmitri leans toward Microsoft's view that the law should not give government authority to intervene when a private sector entity is unable or unwilling to respond to an attack.  I lean toward the government. Jordan Schneider reviews the latest stories of tech companies getting a little too close for comfort to the Chinese surveillance state. The ByteDance censorship story is compelling but not new.  The Oracle story is compelling, new, and a clever piece of journalism by another alumna of the podcast, Mara Hvistendahl: Feeding the Beast: How Oracle Sells Repression in China  Finally, in a series of quick bites, we cover: U.S. charges against three North Koreans who boosted national GDP appreciably with their hacks.  The ongoing Jones Day Doxtorsion.  France's discovery that GRU hackers successfully targeted Centreon servers for years, and Sultan Meghji's departure from The Cyberlaw Podcast for some damn thing or other. Blockchain promises to be indispensable to Human Resources practices like recruitment, payroll, and employee data. Indeed, Blockchain’s appeal is a route for permissioned parties to confirm, validate and authenticate the exchange of data through its distributed ledger. Blockchain encrypts data and validates transactions through consensus, distributing an unchanging copy of exchanges to each entity that has a copy of the ledger. This builds higher levels of shared trust between parties and removes the need for third-party verification. In HRchat 249, we look at ways Blockchain can help HR departments and leaders in the decade ahead. The guest this time is Elizebeth Varghese, People & Tech Strategist and Global Leader – Talent & HR Strategy Reinvention at IBM. Elizebeth is recognized as a Global Top 100 HR Influencer. Her team deploys IBM’s best thinking, along with AI, blockchain, robotics, and other leading technologies to create powerful employee and HR experiences. Recognized as a Key Global Influencer in Strategy and Analytics, based on impact on the profession and community, Elizebeth has been listed as a Top 100 Influencer in the industry.

She and her husband, William Friedman, unwittingly became pioneers in the age of intercepted messages and unraveling the secrets of your enemies. The book, The Woman Who Smashed Codes, by Jason Fagone, walks us through how these two young people were introduced to codebreaking, ciphers and the world of hidden messages before World War I. And once they learned the patterns behind codebreaking, their services became indispensable to defeating the Nazis in World War II. You may not have heard of them, but their tireless work behind the scenes, magically turning indecipherable jumbles of letters into critical Allied intelligence, changed the course of history. Many people struggle with addiction their whole lives. Their story one of (hu)man vs. addiction, their story often ending with addiction the victor. But what if that is not the way the story needs to be written? What if there is a way out that helps us suffering to reach into the root of our pain and find our love for life again? The guests for this episode of the podcast, Elizabeth Bast and Chor Boogie, believe true freedom from addiction is possible with an ancient African root bark called Iboga. They believe this not only because of the growing scientific research and the countless anecdotes about iboga's potential available on the internet but because it is also their lived experience. Elizebeth and Chor join us on the show to talk about heroin addiction, how it impacted their intimate relationship, the redemption they found in Iboga, and what iboga taught them about what it takes to heal the pain at the root of addiction in oneself and the hearts of those we love. ***** See Full Show Notes and all related links: http://bit.ly/ATTMind60 Connect with me for a Skype call: http://www.jameswjesso.com/contact/je... "When sorrows come, they come not single spies, But in battalions..." —HAMLET (4.5.83) It's a striking comment that occurs late in this podcast—and by the time you hear it, you may well agree: "Without Bacon and Shakespeare, we might not have won the war in the Pacific," says Bill Sherman, head of research at the Victoria and Albert Museum and professor of Renaissance studies at the University of York. Rebecca Sheir, host of our Shakespeare Unlimited series, talks with Sherman about the flowering of codes, ciphers, and secret message systems during the Renaissance—including a brilliant cipher devised by Francis Bacon—and their surprising influence on modern cryptography. As Sherman explains, William Friedman, the top US cryptographer whose team broke the Japanese diplomatic code before World War II, had once been a junior staffer on a team that sought to find Bacon's real-life cipher embedded in the plays of Shakespeare (a once-popular notion that he and his wife and fellow cryptographer Elizebeth later debunked). That early exposure to Renaissance cryptography shaped Friedman's career, as he soon became the founder of modern American cryptography. Listen to learn more about why you might say that Bacon and Shakespeare—through their influence on Friedman—did indeed help to win the war. --------------- From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. © Folger Shakespeare Library.
