This week, host Ryan Coonerty talks with Connecticut State Senator Christine Cohen. Cohen is a small business owner turned legislator who previously served on her local school board before running for the state senate following the first election of President Trump. In Hartford, she draws on her experiences as the owner of Cohen's Bagel Company to guide her leadership on various legislative committees, including the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee and the Environment Committee, and now as the Co-Chair of the Transportation Committee. Her impressive record of legislative success includes leading the passage of the Connecticut Clean Air Act, enacting legislation to prevent wrong-way crashes, and securing funding for mental health crisis intervention programs for law enforcement officers. Ryan and Senator Cohen discuss the misconception that Democrats are “anti--business” and how she's pushed back on this by forwarding a pro-business agenda, including crucial work on paid leave. They also talk about the challenges of working in the state legislature at a time when hyper-partisan rhetoric dominates conversations and distracts from serving the people. Tune in to hear Senator Cohen's advice for policymakers who want to focus on solutions and support small businesses in these uncertain economic times. IN THIS EPISODE: • [01:04] Podcast producer, Rachel, introduces this episode where Ryan Coonerty interviews Senator Christine Cohen. • [02:03] Senator Cohen's journey from Cohen's Bagel Co to the state senate. • [05:45] Transferrable skills and areas of focus between small business and local government. • [09:02] How Senator Cohen believes the Democratic Party can better support small business owners. • [11:06] Paid family medical leave and her work on the Environment Committee and the Connecticut Clean Air Act. • [15:02] How Connecticut's transportation policy has been affected by the Trump administration. • [19:40] Her state's leadership is working to reduce harm and the value of a bipartisan approach. • [24:02] Mental health support for vulnerable communities and how Senator Cohen has created an impact. • [28:11] What drives Senator Cohen as she moves forward in government.

In this week's restaurant podcast Kaela Contrada-Ray joins the show and shares the things she learned from working in the service industry. What are the skills we learn in the restaurant industry that translate to other careers? Transferrable skills can include... Customer Service: This includes being polite, friendly, and attentive to customer needs. Communication Skills: Clear communication is key, both with customers and with kitchen staff. Organization: Restaurants can be busy and hectic environments. Multi-Tasking: Servers often have to juggle various tasks, such as taking orders, delivering food, refilling drinks, and handling payments, all at the same time. Attention to Detail: Small details matter, whether it's remembering how a customer likes their coffee or ensuring that orders are correct and well-presented. Problem-Solving: Restaurants can encounter various challenges, such as kitchen mistakes or dissatisfied customers. Servers should be able to handle these situations calmly and find solutions. Stamina: The job can be physically demanding, requiring standing and walking for long periods. Good stamina is necessary to keep up with the pace of a busy restaurant. Teamwork: Servers need to work well with other staff members, including kitchen staff and fellow servers, to ensure smooth operations. Positivity: Maintaining a positive attitude, even in stressful situations, can enhance the dining experience for customers and colleagues alike.Watch us on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@themodernwaiterpodcast?sub_confirmation=1Follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/themodernwaiterpodcast/More Info https://www.themodernwaiter.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
What is the BIBA Conference and why is it such a crucial event on the insurance industry calendar? To what extent are skills from external industries transferrable into insurance careers? How can the mobility of such external skills into insurance roles be better communicated in the current recruitment landscape? In this episode, we're very pleased to be speaking with Emma Chapman, Head of Conference at BIBA. This year's BIBA Conference held in Manchester in May attracted 9000 people across two days. The event aims to unite brokers, insurers, and the wider insurance community to do business, establish and build relationships, and much more. In conversation with Sandra Lewin, Emma discusses how her background in theatre has informed her decision-making in curating and arranging the annual conference over the past eight years. As such, she is a testament to the transferability of skills from seemingly unrelated industries into the wide array of roles available in insurance. Quote of the Episode “You go to conferences for so many reasons. Number one is to do business, we know that. Fundamentally, people say [that, at BIBA,] they get a month's worth of business done in two days. Brilliant. But what else can you get?” The BIBA Conference is, first and foremost, a springboard for networking, bolstering existing business relationships and fostering new ones. Yet, in a post-COVID landscape in which many people have hybrid work schedules and a more intertwined work-life balance, it is harder to entice people to attend these events. BIBA's first in-person conference after the pandemic was in 2022, and it was a huge success, which can largely be attributed to people's glee at being able to attend such events and network face-to-face. In 2023, Emma and her team faced a challenge of how to improve upon this warm reception, now that hybrid working patterns are seemingly here to stay. They decided to bring a flavour of fun and theatricality to the conference, with puppies available to cuddle at a Wellness Zone, and with a speech from Sir Mo Farah. Key Takeaways Emma studied a Drama and Theatre Studies degree at Exeter, and went into Stage Management in the West End. After several successful years managing a variety of big productions, she sought a change and became involved in event organising, eventually working for BIBA via an agency before being invited to arrange the conference in-house post-pandemic. Theatre and insurance are undoubtedly very different industries, but Emma's role at BIBA entails a need to put on a spectacle for conference attendees. She argues that her theatre background has significantly informed her work at BIBA, emphasising that if and when you do decide to switch roles or even industries into insurance, your past experience will always be beneficial in one way or another. You should never consider your previous working roles or plans as a barrier to entry or transition within the industry. Emma's daily work at BIBA is extremely varied, but it is ultimately founded upon building and maintaining mutually beneficial business relationships, organisation, and an ability to meet deadlines – all skills she developed in her previous career which are transferrable to and crucial in an insurance career. Indeed, Emma suggests that taking skills from external and ostensibly unrelated industries into insurance is extremely beneficial to ensure a consistent inflow of fresh ideas and perspectives. Emma argues that we must actively combat the common misconception that insurance careers are boring, noting that she's never had an uninteresting day on the job. She emphasises that insurance is something which everyone must experience and engage with from a client perspective. As such, irrespective of which industry one initially works in, everyone is in a strong position to contribute ideas to insurance, as every year, we all have to purchase or renew car insurance, home insurance, life insurance, and so on. Best Moments/Key Quotes “Because we now live in a semi hybrid world, it takes even more to get people out of their homes. You have to deliver something that you cannot get at home, more so than when everyone was in offices, because everyone was always leaving their home. Everyone was always travelling; it was very easy to go to things after work.” “What I love about my job is it's so varied. I mean, we organise literally everything to do with the exhibition… So, my day could be, depending on where we are on the lifecycle of the event, it could be signing off on social media, ordering 1000s of chairs, approving budget, briefing contractors, sorting out the advertising, paying for things, booking things. It's a real smorgasbord of things. And that's why I love what I do so much.” “If you spent some time understanding the insurance industry, you could be an excellent addition, [if you] come with outside ideas. That's what I'm always passionate about: there are these transferable skills in so many different career choices.” “For example, as an event organiser, someone who does event organising for a pharmaceutical company, something totally different to insurance, but because you are still organising a live event, an engaging thing for delegates, you still need to listen to the feedback, and work out whether what you're giving is what people actually want to receive. They would come with amazing ideas, and vice versa. There almost needs to be this give and take between industries, so that you constantly have fresh ideas coming.” Resources BIBA – The BIBA Conference wins Best Association Event Award: https://www.biba.org.uk/press-releases/the-biba-conference-wins-best-association-event-award/ About the Guest Emma Chapman is the Head of Conference at BIBA (British Insurance Brokers' Association), leading a team who organises its annual conference. [52:57] What is next for Gregg and his business? Getting Laid Off Pushed Gregg Into a Recruiting Career Gregg shared an amazing story of resilience on how he got into the recruiting industry. Getting laid off unexpectedly pushed Gregg into a recruiting career. He loved his sales job and was blindsided when he was laid off after 4 years as a top performer. This made interviewing difficult as he had to overcome the perception that he must have underperformed despite being an actual top performer. He also had non-compete from his old company which prevented him from staying in the same industry. Facing these challenges pushed Greg to explore a new path by using his sales skills to transition into recruiting. This pivot into recruiting ended up being life-changing for Greg's career. You will hear how he used skills he learned from sales to be an effective recruiter. He even leverages his experience of being laid off to engage with candidates. “I think when I speak to candidates and we're seeing more layoffs right now, I have major empathy for them because it's not just like, I've sold like you. I've stood at trade shows for 5 hours like you. I've been laid off like you. And that really helps me, in my opinion, become a better recruiter because I've actually lived it.” Though difficult, getting laid off opened new opportunities that Greg capitalized on. In his words, “It was a blessing in disguise. It was probably the best thing that ever happened.” Character Over Credentials: Building an All-Star Team to Scale Another topic that will also resonate with a lot of business owners is strategies for hiring recruiters and team members to scale. Gregg focuses on hiring people based on character and shared values over resume credentials. He wants people he genuinely enjoys working with. He told the story of how hiring a trusted person without recruiting experience worked well for their business. This strategy works well for Gregg and his team. He has grown his first recruiting company (with no outside funding) to 60 employees, reaching the Inc. 5000 for Fastest-Growing Companies 3 times! These are some of my takeaways from their strategy: Vetting the work ethic, values, and coachability is crucial Greg wants employees he has a natural rapport A team aligned in values helps ensure an ethical, collaborative culture Why Hiring a COO is Critical If you are a solo recruitment entrepreneur and planning to scale, hiring a COO is critical. This has been true for both Gregg and me, where hiring an effective COO became a game changer. A lot of us may be able to relate to what Gregg said: “I've been doing it by myself for twelve years and I've never really had help. And it's been exhausting. I mean, it's been an amazing ride, but it's been exhausting. And I like to have my recruiters focus on recruiting. I mean, that's what keeps the lights on and not worrying about doing side projects and onboarding employees and dealing with maybe a tough client, which I know is going to wear them down a little bit. So that's why I decided to hire somebody in operations, is that I have my recruiters recruiting. I'm doing everything else, and to do everything else, it's a lot. I just need a helping hand.” Gregg is intentionally growing his firm slowly to have a lifestyle business. Hiring a COO helps him to focus on sales while delegating operations. Offloading operational tasks and delegating things that he does not enjoy doing creates more freedom and a better lifestyle. This resonates well with me. Some business owners may be apprehensive to take this approach because paying someone else can translate to lesser profit. But keep in mind that making less in the short term creates more freedom to earn much more in the long term. Here is his bio below: Following Graduate Studies in Exercise Science, I accidentally fell into the Sales and Marketing world. The transition from college into the business world has taught me that diverse skill development, and the ability to transfer those skills into your current job is far more important than the subject you studied in college. The legislation creates a two-tiered tax credit that provides incentives for Michigan-produced commercials, commercial photography, corporate videos as well as film, television, and streaming productions. The action comes at a time when over 40 states and territories support film programs and, in turn, receive the jobs, economic boost, and related upstream, downstream and peripheral benefits from a multi-billion-dollar industry. This legislation will attract and support high-paying creative and technology sector jobs that are the driving force of media content. “This is about Michigan jobs,” said David Haddad, MiFIA chair. “As we look to boost our state's economy and keep our talent here, we know that attracting the robust film industry is a smart investment in our state's economy and its workers.” Under the Multimedia Jobs Act, preference is given to state-based companies that hire Michigan residents. Other specifics of the legislation include: · Transferrable tax credit. Not a rebate. Tax credits stay in Michigan and benefit Michigan companies. · A base tax credit starting at 25% for in-state spending with an additional 5% awarded for the inclusion of “filmed in Michigan,” “Pure Michigan,” “Michigan Film & Digital Media Office” and “MIFIA” logo; · A commitment from production companies to spend at least $50,000 for commercial photography, advertising commercial or project under 20 minutes or at least $300,000 for productions over 20 minutes; · A 30% tax credit for hiring Michigan residents and 20% for non-residents; · A requirement that qualified Michigan vendors provide proof of brick-and-mortar presence, have inventory, and have full-time employees on staff. Pass-through companies and transactions will not qualify; and · Accountability requirements for independent verification of approved expenditures. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNX… » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

On this week's episode of Conversations for Financial Professionals, I chat with Dr. Barry Mulholland about how important career changers are to the industry because of their transferrable skills.
Do you have Transferable Skills? Why would it be important to have “ transferable skills”. And what are such skills? Every company, business and yourself need skill sets: One's ability to sell products, a marketing maven, digital and otherwise, expert with business applications; Excel,Google Docs Of course , public speaking! ( skills that DON'T add value: procrastination, gossip, inflexible) Kundalini Yoga and Meditation Children's yoga virtual class HARIPRAKAASH https://youtu.be/lwOTuCfTTT0Made in Meditation virtual classes https://youtu.be/7Kf-f0SPcM0 am linking a colleagues podcast here for you “ burned out business moms who also do homeschooling https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-i-know-if-im-burned-out/id1619365155?i=100058640709 Wine. It's the HOLIDAYS. Thanksgiving wines begin the holiday celebrations Please Check out non alcoholic choices also . To begin any celebration, bubbles are always appropriate. New York Hard Ciders and Thanksgiving wines NY is the only choice, in my opinion, and the best producers of Hard ciders. Angry Orchard is the most popular NY hard cider and the most widely distributed. Ryan Burk is the Cider Master. He treats cider making as though he was making a fine wine, in that he discusses, native, wild yeasts, terroir and fermentation. They use predominantly New York State apples, Baldwin, Rome and Rhode Island green apples that are grown in New York. Once they are picked in September, October, they sort by hand, on a conveyer belt. They toss out the bad apples and then run the apples through a shower. Next the apples get a good soaking to remove dirt, stones and stems. Lastly a final wash before they go to the “ mashing process.” This produces the juice sans pumice. Ryan talks about native and wild yeasts which occur naturally on the apple skins and leaves. This produces specific terroir ( my kind of language). The fermentation takes place in used barrels which are neutral, meaning no oak flavor, is imparted to the cider blend. The ciders are usually filtered. Ryan mentions that they experiment with wine yeasts also. Great video on the entire process. https://youtu.be/iIriESwXy2c The top ciders in my opinion are: https://www.angryorchard.com/, http://www.aaronburrcider.com/, http://www.badseedhardcider.com/ Our American fare is quite heavy. Therefore you want wines that will cut through the fatThanksgiving wines are the hot topic of course. Many people choose Pinot Noir or another red. These are actually not good choices because our American holiday fare is very rich. We actually want wines that cut the fat and richness of our Thanksgiving feast. Therefore a full bodied white wine such as Chardonnay, only slightly oaked, preferably unoaked is better. Sauvignon Blanc is also a perfect choice. If you want to choose domestic wines, I suggest: ZD WINES Napa: Chardonnay is stunning. They produce a very crisp Sauvignon Blanc. They make a very substantial Pinot Noir and they are famous for their Cabernet. www.ZDWines.com. Robert SINSKEY also Napa is famous for his Pinot Noir. However, choose the Pinot Blanc and the Abraxas ( white varietals blend) and definitely the Vin Gris of Pinot Noir, which is a Rose'. Yes Rose's are really the exciting wines for Thanksgiving. www.Robert SINSKEY.com all organic vines. I prefer the European style wines however, for Thanksgiving. Therefore I would choose an AOC Chablis, a chenin Blanc from Loire, a Sancerre also. You might venture into Cru Beaujolais for the reds. Serve these gamay varietal wines slightly chilled. This week, we will be joined by Eleni Routoula (she/her). Originally from Greece, Eleni moved in the UK 6 years ago to pursue further studies. Her educational background has been in chemical engineering, but after 10 years of chemeng studies including a PhD on the topic, she realised that my passion was not about the practice of the profession as a researcher or industrial engineer. During my PhD in chemical engineering, Eleni discovered an interest in teaching, researchers' development, science communication, networking, and employability, through participation in numerous extra-curricular activities. Her non-research interests ranged from teaching assistance and participating in outreach, to chairing committees and an editorial placement in the journal Nature. She decided to pave her way in a sector different than originally intended, by pursuing further experience and employment in areas of interest. Currently, her main focus is educating students and researchers on the realisation and development of transferable skills and extracurricular experience as a means to shape and pursue conventional and unconventional careers. You can find her on Instagram @curleni. A full-text transcript of this episode is available via google doc. What is your company's value? Can that value be replicated if you decide to leave? On today's episode, host Roland Frasier breaks down transferable value, what it means, and how value drivers significantly impact your company's market valuation. Transferable value is simply what a business is worth to someone else if the owner decides to leave. If you have plans of one day exiting your business, you must understand the process of creating and maintaining transferable value. However, the thing to note here is that transferable value is not the same as profit. Just because your company makes a ton of money yearly does not necessarily mean it has transferable value. Listen in to learn how you can build transferable value in your business and create an exit plan that dramatically increases your company's value drivers. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN: What is transferable value? The five most common ways to exit a business How to move your business towards a higher valuation Factors that impact the growth of a business Industries with the biggest expansion opportunities The three main components of building transferable value How to build a stable and motivated team capable of growing your business.
