In this enlightening episode of "The Rational Egoist," host Michael Liebowitz welcomes esteemed guest Professor Stephen Hicks, a distinguished figure in the realm of philosophy and a vanguard in the critique of postmodernism. Professor Hicks, who serves as a beacon of knowledge at Rockford University and holds prestigious positions as the Executive Director of The Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship and a Senior Scholar at The Atlas Society, brings a wealth of insight into the ideological underpinnings that shape our society. As the author of the groundbreaking work, "Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault," Professor Hicks embarks on a deep dive with Michael into the labyrinth of postmodern thought, dissecting its origins, principles, and the significant impact it has had on political, cultural, and educational landscapes. The conversation navigates the challenging terrain of skepticism and socialism, tracing their evolution from the ideas of Rousseau to the complex theories of Foucault, and examining the profound implications these philosophies have for individual rights, freedom, and the pursuit of truth in our contemporary world. Listeners will be treated to a masterclass on the contrast between postmodernism's relativistic approach to knowledge and morality, and the principled stance of rational egoism that champions reason, individualism, and objective reality. Through a series of engaging discussions, Michael and Professor Hicks illuminate the path towards understanding the stakes of accepting or rejecting postmodernist claims, offering a clarion call for intellectual integrity and the valorization of the individual's capacity to understand the world through reason. This episode is a must-listen for anyone invested in the battle of ideas shaping our era, providing not only a critique of postmodernism but also a celebration of the human spirit's unyielding quest for knowledge and truth. Michael Leibowitz is a renowned philosopher, political activist, and the esteemed host of the Rational Egoist podcast. Inspired by the philosophical teachings of Ayn Rand, Leibowitz passionately champions the principles of reason, rational self-interest, and individualism, seeking to empower others through his compelling work. His life's narrative exemplifies the transformative power of Ayn Rand's writings. Having faced challenging circumstances that led to a 25-year prison sentence, Leibowitz emerged from adversity by embracing the tenets of rational self-interest and moral philosophy put forth by Ayn Rand. This profound transformation propelled him to become an influential figure in the libertarian and Objectivist communities, motivating others to adopt reason, individualism, and self-interest in their own lives. Leibowitz is a versatile author, co-authoring the thought-provoking book titled “Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime.” This groundbreaking work delves into societal attitudes surrounding punishment and rehabilitation, shedding light on how misguided approaches have contributed to the rise of crime and recidivism. Additionally, he has authored the book “View from a Cage: From Convict to Crusader for Liberty,” offering an intimate portrayal of his personal journey while exploring the philosophies that influenced his transformation. For a deeper exploration of his ideas and insights, don't miss the opportunity to read “Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime,” co-authored by Michael Leibowitz. Stephen Hicks is a professor of philosophy at Rockford University, U.S. and the author of several books, including the best-seller Explaining Postmodernism, which details the philosophical roots of today's cultural climate. Mr. Hicks highlights Immanuel Kant's role in undermining objectivity and reason, showing how his ideas remain the corner stone of Post Modernism and "Fine Art" to this day. Giving an overview of Kant's aesthetics, metaphysics and epistemology, the conversation further explains how this cocktail necessarily cripples classically minded people: If we cannot know reality then the act of painting it becomes naive. If nothing is objective then we cannot trust the rules of any craft and if nothing is universal then we become estranged from the mythic perspective. You can listen to Hicks' lecture How Art Became Ugly or check out his appearances on various podcasts including his own Open College Podcast. His official YouTube-channel is CEE Channel (Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship).
For some time now, I have been contemplating what early twentieth-century activist and reformer Jane Addams would have to say to those of us who are asking tough questions about philanthropy. In short, I believe she would ask whether our work reflects a commitment to strengthening democracy, creating proximity among the haves and the have nots, and exemplifying what it means to be a citizen rather than a mere consumer. While I believe Addams would sympathize with many of the critiques that are being thrown at philanthropy today; I also believe she would encourage us all to be hyper-diligent in understanding what appropriate expectations we should have of it.For those who are not familiar with Jane Addams and her views on philanthropy, she was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, co-founder of the ACLU, and co-founder of Chicago's Hull House. Addams' views on philanthropy afford us a contrast to Andrew Carnegie's “responsibilities of wealth” and the notion that giving away money is hard work. Author Louise Knight explains that Addams was far more concerned about the “responsibilities of being human” and believed philanthropy should create space for interacting directly, making sense of each other's burdens, and working together to address social issues. Before the holidays, I had the pleasure of recording today's podcast conversation with Paul Pribbenow, a veteran fundraiser, the president at Augsburg University, and a scholar of Addams' work. During his time as Augsburg‘s president, Paul has been recognized for the transformation of a culture of philanthropy that hinges on deficit-thinking and focuses on what is lacking, to an asset-based perspective that emphasizes Augsburg's high aspirations and unique strengths. In 2019, Paul was named Outstanding Fundraising Professional by The Association of Fundraising Professionals: the highest honor that AFP bestows to its members. In addition to numerous articles on philanthropy, ethics, and not-for-profit management, Paul is perhaps most admired for his bimonthly email newsletter titled, “Notes for the Reflective Practitioner.”Prior to accepting his post at Augsburg University, Paul served as president of Rockford University where Jane Addams graduated in 1882. Building on her legacy, Paul created The Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement and leveraged Addams story to recruit students and interest them in community service. As Paul writes, Addams believed that philanthropy, when properly understood, was the work of citizenship. As he desires for his students and faculty, Paul wants all of us to see and understand philanthropy as Addams did: a “common work” that belongs to all citizens. As always, we are grateful to our friends at CueBack for sponsoring The Fundraising Talent Podcast. We say we want children to grow to be self-reliant, creative problem-solving adults. But in schooling kids, do we follow through on that? Do schools teach independence of mind and action or do students learn compliance? Do students learn that life is about solving new problems or are they instructed that authorities have the answers? Do students learn experimentalism and that success typically comes after much failure or do they learn that failure is a source of shame? Does our education system stunt kid’s potential? In this episode, I invited the philosopher and author Stephen Hicks on the podcast to chat about his book, Explaining Postmodernism. Stephen has been a Professor of Philosophy at Rockford University in Illinois for nearly 20 years, and he's published widely on the history of philosophy, ethics, and politics. The reason I invited Stephen on the show is because I think postmodernism planted the seeds of the illiberalism that's erupting throughout our society today, and Stephen Hicks literally wrote the book on that development. In my opinion, his insight is critical because the battle of ideas postmodern thinking provokes could very well determine the fate of liberal democracy our lifetime. To learn more about Stephen Hicks, I encourage you to visit his website, stephenhicks.org, or follow him on Twitter. What are family values? Are they dormant? What has changed about family values over the years? What has changed about fatherhood? Is there a crisis of family values and fatherhood? Can philosophy help? What is philosophy? And what is philosophy good for? Dr. Matthew C. Flamm, professor and Department Chair of philosophy at Rockford University, joins me on the Dani Flo Podcast Video to discuss what has changed about family values and fatherhood in his lifetime and what philosophy is and what its good for. Dr. Flamm answers and discusses: - What's it like being a father of a daughter for sixteen years? - What is the difference for a father, between having a boy or a girl? [Dr. Flamm asks me] - What has changed about being a father in the last sixteen years? - Did more men want to be fathers sixteen years ago versus today? - Have family values gone to the wayside? Or have family values been re-defined? What is the new definition? - Is there a difference between the Religious right at a macro level versus the personal level? - Is there a chance that family values are devolving? - What is philosophy? What has philosophy said about parenthood? - Why can't science tell us how to be a good parent? - Why can't the soft sciences tell us how to be a good parent (i.e. psychology)? - Is it possible to not know what philosophy is and still use it? Are philosophical questions not as important as what science and psychology can tell us? - How do we know psychology or science can't tell us what love is? - Is it closed minded to think science can't ever tell us what love is? - Can philosophy be defined as: the wise way to do the things we care about? - What advice do you have for young men that agree that family values are dormant? - Why is philosophy worthwhile? - Why is philosophy worth studying at the academic level? You're going to enjoy this episode if the topics of: family values, fatherhood, and philosophy interest you as much as it interests Dr. Flamm and me . Full disclosure: I have a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University and currently serve as Chief of Staff to Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara. On Monday, the Rockford City Council voted unanimously to contribute $1.5 million annually to Rockford Promise for at least the next 17 years. This would allow graduates of Rockford Public School District 205 with a 3.0 GPA to earn a bachelor’s degree from NIU with all tuition and general fees paid for. Modeled on the Kalamazoo, Michigan, Promise, Rockford Promise is a 13-year old non-profit that has already helped nearly 150 students attend Rock Valley College and Rockford University tuition-free as Rockford Promise Scholars. In his 2018 State of the City speech, Mayor McNamara urged the community to fully fund and expand Rockford Promise by 2025. Thanks to his leadership and that of NIU President Lisa Freeman, RPS Superintendent Ehren Jarrett, the staff and board of Rockford Promise, and the support of our City Council, this vision can be a

He has published five books:Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault.Nietzsche and the Nazis. The Art of Reasoning: Readings for Logical AnalysisEntrepreneurial Living.Liberalism Pro and Con.In this conversation, we discuss his book Explaining Postmodernism and topics and questions that sorround it, such as Identity Politics, how to approach philosophy as a young student, what's the role of universities in today's world, has Capitalism made the world more prosperous, are all human beings committed to progress, and much more. This episode comes at a time when ideas are clashing more and more, and it seems that we are forgetting how crucial it is to dialogue with those who oppose our ideas, rather than trying to shut them down. We are approaching an era that will be defined by challenges and uncertainty, and there is no better way of thriving during these times than by creating ties with people, and not by engaging in more divisive practices. This is why I believe that my conversation with Dr. Hicks was so important, as we engaged in a meaningful dialogue that had as its purpose to engage with our ideas critically. If we want to thrive as a species, we must recognize that dialogue in our universities, and both in the public and private sphere, is a crucial component of it. We must be able to open the conversation and challenge ideas, such as the notion of progress, globalism, individuality and collectivism. I hope this conversation inspires you to open your heart and ears for those who oppose you, and that you are able to engage with them in a civil, honest and critical manner.---Website: http://www.stephenhicks.org---HIGHLIGHTS(1:40) What does philosophy mean to you?(4:15) How do you approach philosophy and big thinkers with big ideas?(6:35) W.T. Join us for The Atlas Society Asks Michael Newberry and Stephen Hicks. Michael Newberry is an American neo-romanticist painter based in Idyllwild, California. He blends a variety of influences, notably Rembrandt and the French Impressionists. The Atlas Society Senior Scholar Dr. Stephen Hicks is a professor of philosophy at Rockford University as well as the Director of the Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship. Professor Hicks has written a number of books, including Explaining Postmodernism (he also just wrote the intro to our just released Pocket Guide to Postmodernism).“Newberry’s work speaks to the senses, the intellect, and the passions of those who do not need the judgment of history to tell them what is great, but who can themselves make the judgment of history today.” –Dr. Hicks
In June, I wrote a letter to Rockford University students wherein I said: “Our mission is to educate our student body to be better prepared to make change and seek to fix the cause, not react to the symptoms, of systemic racism that carries with it a 300-year legacy of racial inequality that began before our nation even started.” I continued: “it took nearly a century from the signing of the declaration of independence to the abolition of slavery. It took nearly another century for the civil rights movement to change the laws. We now have only another forty years until we reach the next century mark -- and we still have so much work to do.” Since that time, we’ve had the beginnings of dialogue across our nation. It seems as though real change is on the cusp. However, I am also afraid that amidst a continuing pandemic and forthcoming election circus, real change may stall. And so I ask myself: what can we do? What role can we play to keep the dialogue alive while finding concrete ways
This week we continue with the introduction to our topic Getting a World That Does Not Get it. Over the last two weeks we have explored why our Christian faith is held in derision by some. This week we look at the philosophies of modernism and postmodernism which have dominated our secular culture in the recent past. We are listening in to a conversation between Professor Stephen Hicks and John Anderson. Professor Hicks is a Canadian-American philosopher who teaches at Rockford University in Illinois. He provides insights into why western democracies are experiencing increasing social conflict. We want to commend John Anderson’s extensive series called Conversations with John Anderson to you. If you go to his webpage you will find many more great interviews there - johnanderson.net.au Please also make sure you check out the CEC website for helpful resources to understand out culture, including how cultural Marxism is a serious and growing threat to the church and practical advice for how Christians can discuss these issues. Christians Engaging Culture exists to equip the Christians to give faithful answers in everyday cultural conversations and to turn those conversations to the gospel. Printmaker Sarah Reed-McNamara is the latest guest on “Meet the Artist,” the podcast from Register Star newsroom where we meet the artist who makes our community a more beautiful place. Sarah operates SRMprints and recently established a collaborative maker space called GEM: Gather, Engage, Make, on State Street in downtown. She makes scarves, tea towels, table runners, and block prints with bold colors and tessellating designs. Sarah moved to Rockford at age 17, and her early favorite memories here were with her dad checking out the CDs, show posters and books at Media Play, an entertainment shop on the east side. She went on to earn an art history degree from Rockford University, where she studied and drew inspiration from the Mexican artists from the early- to mid-1900s who formed the collective called Taller de Grafica Popular. The diverse collection of men and women produced work to advance revolutionary and progressive causes which influence Sarah’s work today. For the next year, Sarah will be Rockford Art Museum’s artist-in-residence, hosting printmaking workshops for young students. Sarah is a mother of two small children. And she happens to be married to one of Rockford’s most well-known figures, Mayor Tom McNamara. As the title of the book implies, we talk about how Nietzsche might have influenced the German National-Socialist political ideology, and, toward the end, we also get a little bit into the connections between Nazism and Postmodernism, and how Nietzsche was one of the major influences in both these political opposite ideologies. Specific topics include Nietzsche's reactionary views against the values of the Enlightenment, namely rationality and objectivity, individualism, progress, and science as whole. Time Links: 00:59 Nietzsche's take on Rationality and Objectivity 03:58 Was he an individualist? 18:47 What about progress, democracy, human rights? 26:14 About science and values 31:27 Did Nietzsche influence Nazism? About a week ago, I took a group of employees to the 2018 Global Leadership Summit, held at Rockford University. This year’s theme was “Everyone Has Influence,” and the speakers included Pastors TD Jakes and Craig Groeschel, author Danielle Strickland, and even TED Talk alum Simon Simek. They spoke passionately, had wonderful knowledge to impart, and gave us all a lot to consider about how to grow as leaders. In this video, I share my top takeaways from the event. If you attended, I’d love to hear what you thought! What were your favorite parts? What did you take away that you feel will help boost your influence in your business and personal life? – Tim

This week my guest is Professor Stephen Hicks, a Canadian-American philosopher. I have invited Professor Hicks on the show to walk me through important cultural themes that are happening today and why they matter for you and your business. Aside from that, with my daughter going off to university/college next year, I wanted to understand what is being bred in the Universities on a cultural level. During the interview, Professor Hicks and I take a deep dive into history to trace the rise of post-modernism, and discuss the issue of offense as a weapon in the current social environment. We also talk about business ethics, hiring young talent and structuring your group dynamics as a leader in order to maximize individual thinking in current environment. I hope you will find this interview fascinating and educational as much as I did. With that, enjoy my wide-ranging conversation with Professor Stephen Hicks! Major Take-Aways From This Episode: Learn about the University shift from tradition of classical liberal education with focus on individual and his uniqueness to a post-modern outlook with focus on groups that are fundamental to a person’s identity than their individuality. If you are an entrepreneur/ business leader who has scaled up your business, you are also the chief culture officer and are able to work with people of all different personality types. Walk through the major epochs and find out what brought us to a post-modern era. When you are hiring young people out of college that have dramatically different backgrounds, how do you socially manage them working closely with each other? Post-modernism views involve philosophical argumentation that individuals are either secondary, or ultimately not real. As a leader, how do you structure your group dynamics to maximize the individual thinking? Why Professor Hicks’ take on ethics in business is a “minority position”? What is equality of outcomes perspective and why is that an issue? What are the ways to embrace the new generation that is constantly being offended coming into the workforce and integrate them into society? Why should you should expect to be offended on a regular basis and develop a thick skin? Why you should be aware that the broader culture is everything? About Professor Stephen Hicks Stephen R. C. In this episode of Food Safety Matters, we speak to Jorge about: The art of balancing food safety science with common sense and making decisions based on both Food safety culture and how it allows employees to speak up when food safety is at risk Challenges of temperature control, contamination, and traceability while distributing food The importance of working with supply chain partners who are knowledgeable about food safety and take it seriously Why having the most sophisticated, up-to-date technology is not always enough to ensure the safety of food Challenges faced by large food transporters that are not always problematic for smaller, local, or regional operators The importance of using technology properly to ensure the best data and integrity possible Best practices for transporting mixed loads Why documentation and record-keeping are so important for times when technology may fail His thoughts on why food distribution is not a huge target for intentional contamination How the introduction of FSMA has helped make it safer to transport both raw product and ready-to-eat product on the same truck without cross-contamination issues Common transportation issues and the use of trucks that are not fit to safely transport food Working with GFSI to create international standards for transportation and warehousing How GFSI standards compare to the FSMA Sanitary Transportation rule Positive trends he sees with technology, big data, analytics, epidemiology, DNA, traceability, blockchain, and more.
