Sega's Genesis (Mega Drive) and Nintendo's Super Nintendo - they were the topic of every school debate in the early '90s, but decades later, these rival machines STILL trigger passionate reactions in dedicated fans. Which system really was "the best?" Usually, it depends on who's being asked, but hindsight never lies. Looking back, one system was great...but the other became timeless. One was money well spent, but the other became transcendent...its titles still a source of inspiration for aspiring game design. One is remembered...but one is still relevant.Visit lostnostalgia.com for more old-school, wistful goodness. Thanks to Decktonic for the opening/closing tune.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where we this week we begin a new series on 1993's seminal FPS DOOM. We talk briefly about the year in games before digging into the game proper. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First Episode! Issues covered: where the game takes place, adventure games at a good spot, hard drives and CD-ROMs, designing for efficiency, polar opposite of rendering presentation from MYST, first-person perspectives, tone and subject matter, how each host met up with the game, Brett's hoarding problem, "things have changed," shareware model, how you could write from/to a disk, "free to play," levels becoming more organic, pushing technology, avoiding drawing pixels multiple times, simplicity of rooms and limited enemies, having a better sense of place, adding a map (which ten years before would have been the game), moving in the map, comparing goals of different FPSes, abstract levels vs grounded ones, trying to find the first-person formula and simplifying down, limited enemy types in the first episode, dealing with enemies in a mix, hearing before you see, high school aesthetic, the whole aesthetic in the cover, gore, leaning into what your technology can do, contrasting themes in first-person games, falling into the game, getting your skills back, developing your vocabulary, we totally get the dates wrong on a couple games, playing with a mouse and keyboard vs sticks, speed speed speed, weird choices for sprites, the pacing of the intro, having a horror intro the overshadows, organic bits of design, being able to see across spaces, feeling exploratory, having a sense of place through vistas, addressing an elephant in the room, professionalism in development, Blast Processing, a faster memory pipeline, design beating technology, Riven and Metroidvania, looking across spaces to an exit and being spit out near it later, stat experience and Pokemon (as well as other stat stuff), players figuring stuff out, the game making an argument to you, how does a player reason about a thing and letting a player intend to do a thing, non-exposed systems, Tim guesses who is who. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Day of the Tentacle, MYST, Link's Awakening, Syndicate, Mortal Kombat II, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Masters of Orion, The 7th Guest, Eye of the Beholder, Ultima VII, Wizardry (series), Dark Forces, LucasArts, Chris Corry, Commander Keen, Castle Wolfenstein, Space Quest, Daron Stinnett, Andrew Kirmse, George Lucas, Star Wars, Matt Tateishi, Quake, Dune 2000, Marathon, System Shock, Ultima Underworld, Diablo, Beavis & Butthead, Frank Frazetta, Mysterious Island, Marvel, DC, Spider-Man, Batman, Mario (series), Thief, Nick Foster, Outlaws, Skyrim, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, DOOM (2016), Halo Infinite, 343 Industries, Fallout 4, Sam Thomas, SNES, SEGA, Super Mario Kart, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy, Dreamcast, Saturn, PlayStation, Steve Race, Walker Ferrell, Castlevania, GoldenEye 007, Nier: Automata, Riven, FF6, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, Gothic Chocobo, Shigeru Ohmori, SimCity, Nintendo Power, World of Warcraft, Rich Davis, Derek Achoy/Speakyclean, Jackbox. Thema: Retro-Konsolenspecial: Super Nintendo Entertainment System Erwähnte Spiele: Super Mario World, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Sim City, Gradius III, Final Fight, Super Soccer, Super Tennis, Super R-Type, Super Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Country-Reihe, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Contra III, Starfox I & II, Super Mario World 2: Yoshis Island, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the seven Stars, Mega Man X-Serie, Breath of Fire I & II, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Illusion of Time, Lufia-Reihe, Mystic Quest Legends, Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu II + III), Secret of Evermore, Terranigma, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV - VI, Mother Earthbound II, Ogre Battle, Shadowrun, The 7th Saga, Ultima 6, Dragon Quest V, VI, III Remake, Fire Emblem, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Mario Paint, Bomberman, Actraiser, Flashback, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Course, Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Super Metroid, Super Punch Out!! This week Fred is joined by Ali (@thealmiesta) and Andy (@damien14273) from the 42 Level One podcast to discuss Sonic the Hedgehog.  With a heavily documented history, Sega's official mascot to combat Mario had quite the history.  In part 1 we discuss the origins of Sonic and all of his 16-bit era outings (which include his 8-bit Master System/Game Gear titles, spin-offs, and his CD outing), complete with the games themselves and the stories of development. While long, there's no lack of content or stories tethered with the beloved hedgehog. Saludos Josua Ckultur

Sega or Nintendo? The question that philosophers have pondered for centuries. Blast Processing or Mode 7? Mario or Sonic? What the hell is a Turbografx 16? In this episode we're getting down and dirty into the 16-bit console wars, arguably the most high profile feud between video game systems in history. We're talking the SNES and the Genesis, sure, but who could leave out the lovable scamps Neo Geo and CD-i (ok, maybe not the last one). We'll also examine the role of the early adopter 32-bit consoles that couldn't, the 3DO and Atari Jaguar. All this, plus a healthy dose of retro gaming news in this hellish episode of Pixel Dreams.

Just what is the gayest 16-bit game of all time? CHO ANIKI! But, that's a bit of a foregone conclusion. And at BearsInGames, we like betting on the underdogs. So we're counting down the top five gayest games during the wonderful era that brought us the Blast Processing of the Sega Genesis, the Mode 7 scaling and rotation of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and the... Johnny Turboness... of the Turbografx-16! Watch in awe as we look at beefcake Boris Vallejo paintings, chubby bear giants in metal briefs, bear thugs with crotches the size of cantaloupes, rescuing Madonna during her Like a Virgin phase, the precursor to Soul Calibur, bad 90s press junket commercials with far too many crotch shots, secret passages into XXL London, the single gayest secret character of any game ever, and the best sprite-based animation you've ever seen!
