Nicky and Eric discuss game secrets, company rivalries, and why Nintendo never made a sequel to the original Super Mario RPG. Super Mario RPG is a role-playing Mario game for the Nintendo Switch. It's a remake of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars that came out for Super Nintendo in 1996. The remake was developed by ArtePiazza and was released on November 17, 2023. The story focuses on Mario and his friends as they seek to defeat the Smithy Gang, who have crashed into their world and scattered the seven star pieces of Star Road. Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?)  BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Music by Mark Spurlock and Eric Luedtke References: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_RPG https://mario.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Mario_RPG_(Nintendo_Switch) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_Enix https://web.archive.org/web/20230114212005/https://shmuplations.com/supermariorpg/

It's-a-us, the Rhythm Encounter crew! With the impending launch of the remaster for the beloved sequel, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, we decided it was high time to talk about Mario's illustrious RPG career. Starting with 1996's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and extending through the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games, the idea of a Mario-based RPG went from an unheard of collaboration between Nintendo and then-Squaresoft to multiple styles of games across several generations of consoles. And, as it turns out, incredibly talented composers are attached to every game's soundtrack. I mean, Claymorton, and Smithy. With the help of Frogfucius and his KeroKero Cola... I mean, Frog Sage and Croaka Cola...Ok, so there are definitely SOME things that changed, but overall? Like 95% the same game, and that 95% is glorious, and of the changes, beyond the renames, we got our very favorite thing... QUALITY OF LIFE improvements! (Sorry, Producer Lisa). Was this a joy to come back to and play? (Spoiler: it was). Was it beautiful? (Spoiler: it was). Do we miss needing to save manually? Er Nintendos remake af Super Mario RPG din tid værd? Få svaret her!

Today is a BEEG episode of the original Super Mario RPG released way back in 1996 for the SNES. Mario's first foray into the RPG genre proved extremely successful for both Nintendo and developer Square. A mix of the nintendo charm and Final Fantasy style gameplay, it continues to be one of the greatest entries in the Mario universe. The success stopped when Nintendo chose to go cartridge for their next console and Square went with Sony to create Final Fantasy 7 that made a sequel impossible (though we did get two spin-off franchises in Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi). Cam (@cpawx) joins the boys for his first ever non-zelda episode to chat about playing the original in 1997, having his Mom help him on the final boss and what it's like to play the remake 27 years later.

Video game exclusives are always a big (and oftentimes controversial) topic, and this week was no different. We're looking at a headline roundup of where the Big Three stand with their exclusive titles, including rumored exclusives for Nintendo's supposed Switch Pro, Microsoft's confirmation that "some" Bethesda games will be full Xbox and PC exclusive, and Sony's move to bring PlayStation exclusives to PC.But before all that, let's not forget game announcements (like the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and the new Legally Blonde mobile game). Then it's on to the news, and we've got a full slate. First up is Pringles with their new limited-edition flavor inspired by the Moa burgers of the Halo series. Next it's GameStop's internal drama and how the changing guard intends to lead the company to e-commerce. Then the countdown is on for The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon series before it leaves Netflix. And finally, it's the end of an era as legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu hints that he may have made his last soundtrack.Lastly, we look back at Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars on the game's 25th anniversary.Buzzsprout Affiliate Link (https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=825751)Hosts: @wrytersview, @thewellredmage, @retrogamebrewsMusic: "Gumption" by Russell Gordon at https://soundcloud.com/shredrussell-1Editing: @wrytersviewLogo: @thewellredmageSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/storymode)

We talked about Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars wayyyyy back on episode 9 of the podcast. And 106 episodes later, we're doing it again. Because this game is so good it deserves two podcasts.    That, and we're re-visiting some of the mega-hit games we covered in the early days of the podcast because our show is better now than it was back then and I hate that some of the best games ever didn't get the profanity laced, pumped full of passion podcasts we churn out now. So this week's episode is an hour of gushing over Mario, Bowser, GENO, and I guess a little Mallow, even though he sucks.    I've probably finished this game a dozen times. My guest Tyler hasn't actually beaten it yet, but he's gotten far enough to know it's something special. Rest assured, we're gonna make sure you feel the same way by the time we're done, too.    And first, the fabled Remember The Game? intro! We talk about third party Switch docks, I rant about how stupid "fanboys" are (again), and the board game Hero Quest is back?????   Plus, we also have another fantastic edition of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One' and more! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we are beginning to come dangerously close to spending longer talking about Republic Commando than we did playing it. This time, we get a look behind art development for Star Wars through the eyes and voices of two artists who worked on the title: Greg Knight, who was the principal concept artist for the game, and Paul Pierce, who designed the look and feel of the user interface. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:45 Interview segment 1:14:39 Break 1:15:14 Feedback Issues covered: how Paul got his start, web design in the 90s, learning 3D modeling, how Greg got his start, the ubiquity of LucasFilm in Marin, making an important connection and getting an unstoppable recommendation, the importance of art in establishing a game, the design of HUDs and menus, the distinction between UX and UI, how UI art got into the game, iterating the UI in response to the game you're building, starting out as a texture artist, imagining rooms as a whole and getting noticed for your control of tone, an exciting time to learn about concept art, being a force multiplier for the art team, the need for concept art with rising fidelity, keeping cohesive style and flow in the art by use of concept art as well as art direction, differences with film, what immersive experiences mean for content, lacking control of camera, good ideas coming from all over, vs auteurism, putting a burden on UI aesthetics by being always first-person, bringing in the visor pieces, losing visual real estate and that conversation, the impact on design on art decisions, putting the ammo readouts on the guns, marking up renders to figure out where UI elements would go, weapons as characters, running into resistance with the programmers, the ways programmers can... avoid work, the conversation you have to have around iteration cost, fitting into a palette, designing vehicles that didn't exist in canon, coming up with the tone of a more deadly clone story, figuring out who the clones even were, figuring out what the side stories were, imagining beyond the borders of the film, morphing to a different scale, how little a Geonosian means to a Jedi and how much to a trooper, colorgrading and how it sells various tones and moods, giving a different interpretation of Star Wars, seeing something of Republic Commando reflected in Rogue One, focusing on what's important to your characters, the heat and contrast of the Geonosians, pulling on the film's UI elements, avoiding drama on a project, checking egos at the door, how collaborative the game was, the value of technical art, the energy of team members, tech artists as glue and bridges, the value of a demo, Neanderthal Tim, when your level is difficulty, the design ideas behind the hangars and bridge, the knobs you had to turn for storytelling through tone, having to die again and again, failure without excessive punishment, the ability level of the team, where your skills are relative to the game, improving communication between branches of the team, setting a vision without falling to design by committee, being able to deliver a new experience for a Star Wars audience, the challenge of making an AI that keeps pace with the player, "The Squad Is Your Weapon," the debate around the efficacy of the squad, building around the game's goals and how other games might attack that differently, the importance of building consensus, trying to find a way to say "yes" to an idea, "everybody can design," being able to have the squad revive you. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on the unique series Animal Crossing. We situate the game briefly in time before turning to some of the ways the game introduces itself and its mechanics, before turning to feedback. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: An hour a day! Podcast breakdown: 0:50 Animal Crossing 1:08:09 Break 1:08:43 Feedback Issues covered: "this is one of my favorite Nintendo series, actually," Tim uses the 'cast to his advantage, trying to think of forerunners, Daddy, an explosive era of design, the variety of games and the PC/console divide, thinking outside the box, a weird kind of buzz, the Nintendo spin on some genres, having a chillout time, being able to meditatively play, the weird concepts at work and conveying that to a potential audience, Nintendo going its own way, having a lot going on in even this first game, daily routine and tranquility obscuring the systems, heading off player aggression, meeting up with KK Slider, setting and subverting player expectations, listening to KK Slider play guitar, that Nintendo touch, hopping the train to town and meeting Rover, the important Rover connection, committing to characters and making them iconic, social propriety and cell phones, contrasting this with character creation, representing everything in the game (with an inventory as well), chibi/big head character design, attitude with their voicing, character design and presentation being economic but expressive, timing phonemes against the spaces between words, spending a lot of time on the speech system, Nintendo's habit of having everyone in the company try the games, anime/manga idioms for expression/emotion, developing an internal language and sticking with it, Rover the cat, we reveal our town and player names, getting a mortgage and job from Tom Nook right away, establishing verbs early, passing by the dump and into the store, learning how to put on clothes, gating progress on activity, being naturally pushed to explore what the game has, atypical goals and tricking you into addiction, talking to the animals, establishing something like a main loop gently, coming up with your own "quests," random towns (a discovery for Brett), shared characters between towns, we introduce our characters and NPCs, review from Finland, some design choices that a 25-year-old game overcame, leaning on the RNG to some degree, remembering getting into Animal Crossing and the draw of NES games, the acquisition loop and its evolution, Tim having not really analyzed this game before, gyroids. Back in 1995 Nintendo decided that it wanted to expand Mario into the realm of RPGs. Who better to work with than the premier RPG developer of the time, Square? The two companies pooled their knowledge and the project was developed mostly by Square with oversight of Shigeru Miyamoto himself... however, 1996's Super Mario RPG isn't really a game that Nintendo would ever consider releasing today. The content ranges from laugh-out-loud slapstick and wordplay to some surprising moments of innuendo - all within the universe of Mario. Does this singular, niche RPG deserve to be called one of the best games period?  Chevy Ray Johnston, the developer of the upcoming indie RPG Ikenfell, joins us to help answer that question! Thema: Retro-Konsolenspecial: Super Nintendo Entertainment System Erwähnte Spiele: Super Mario World, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Sim City, Gradius III, Final Fight, Super Soccer, Super Tennis, Super R-Type, Super Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Country-Reihe, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Contra III, Starfox I & II, Super Mario World 2: Yoshis Island, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the seven Stars, Mega Man X-Serie, Breath of Fire I & II, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Illusion of Time, Lufia-Reihe, Mystic Quest Legends, Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu II + III), Secret of Evermore, Terranigma, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV - VI, Mother Earthbound II, Ogre Battle, Shadowrun, The 7th Saga, Ultima 6, Dragon Quest V, VI, III Remake, Fire Emblem, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Mario Paint, Bomberman, Actraiser, Flashback, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Course, Street Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Super Metroid, Super Punch Out!! Perhaps the quintessential cult classic, Beyond Good & Evil released in 2003 to some critical acclaim and lackluster sales. Directed by Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman who yearned for more creative freedom at Ubisoft, the multiplatform release tackled very early 2000s themes of propaganda and murky government motivations as seen through the eyes of a young photojournalist who finds herself torn between the government who says it is keeping her safe and the resistance who tells her everything she knows is a lie. Combining themes that resonate to this day with an art style that has aged well and characters that ring true, is Beyond Good & Evil one of the best games period? JRPGs In this episode: It’s #JRPGJuly, and you guys know by now that we are both huge fans of roleplaying games! But more than just any RPG, we adore JRPGs. In this episode, we discuss our history of why we prefer the unique genre to the more traditional Western RPG. We discuss what a JRPG is (literally “Japanese Roleplaying Game”) Common mechanics Turn based battles Leveling and gearing up Being able to “grind” your way to the next part of the game Typically have a Japanese story translated, not a western story from our culture. Pre-made characters and narrative vs Character creator/player choice (think Fallout/Skyrim) Both of us cut our teeth on the genre with early Final Fantasy games, Pokemon games, and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars on SNES. Additionally, we discuss our current favorites, the standouts from the past we just can’t get go of, and the ones we are most looking forward to in the future! We even go on tangents about how JRPGs influenced our belief systems and personal philosophies! How’s that for geeky? Plus, we talk about two upcoming spiritual successors to Chrono Trigger, and Beej gets so excited he preorders one of them while still recording.
