China a anunțat taxarea coniacului importat din Uniunea Europeană, în ceea ce pare a fi o măsură de răspuns față de tarifele impuse de Bruxelles pentru mașinile electrice chinezești. Producătorii europeni de coniac, preponderent francezi, se consideră ”ostatici” în războiul mașinilor, observă comentatorii. Ei remarcă faptul că Franța a fost principalul promotor al taxării mașinilor electrice chinezești, în timp ce Germania s-a opus. Băutorii chinezi ar putea plăti mai mult pentru Remy Martin și alte brandy-uri europene, notează Asssociated Press, după ce Beijingul a anunțat tarife provizorii de până la 39% la aceste băuturi. Aceasta, la patru zile după ce majoritatea țărilor Uniunii Europene au aprobat taxe pentru vehiculele electrice fabricate în China.Mișcarea le oferă negociatorilor chinezi o pârghie în discuțiile cu UE privind reducerea sau eliminarea tarifelor de până la 35,3% la vehiculele electrice chinezești, care ar urma să intre în vigoare la sfârșitul acestei luni.Potrivit France Info, ”aceasta este o adevărată lovitură pentru întreaga industrie a coniacului. Comisia Europeană promite să sprijine producătorii de brandy și coniac. Ideea este de a elibera fonduri pentru comercianții de coniac pe care a căzut toată greutatea măsurilor comerciale anti-dumping ale Chinei.Acești operatori au, de fapt, foarte puțin timp să reacționeze. Concret, pentru a putea continua să-și vândă produsele în China, ei trebuie, până la 10 octombrie 2024, să depună depozite provizorii care reprezintă în medie majorări de taxe de 35%. Depinde de fiecare companie, dar înseamnă că unele trebuie să scoată rapid sume mari de bani și să aibă cash flow”.Executarea de către Beijing a amenințărilor sale fiscale nu este o surpriză în sine, dar calendarul este cel care a luat prin surprindere industria coniacului, scrie Le Figaro:”La Paris, considerat de China drept vârf de lance al procedurilor europene împotriva industriei auto chineze, se mizează pe următorul summit G20 de la sfârșitul lunii octombrie pentru a se încerca o discuție cu ministrul chinez al comerțului. Pe de altă parte, problema reprezentării Franței la următoarea expoziție de la Shanghai la sfârșitul lunii noiembrie, un punct culminant pentru cei implicați în comerțul cu China, nu a fost încă rezolvată”.Citeste siConiacul francez, în centrul unui nou război comercial cu ChinaBBC informează că  Franța reprezintă 99% din brandy-ul exportat în China, iar grupul de lobby francez al coniacului BNIC a declarat că această mișcare va fi „catastrofală” pentru industrie.„Autoritățile franceze nu ne pot abandona și să ne lase singuri să ne ocupăm de represaliile chineze care nu au nicio legătură cu noi”, a comunicat organizația.Acțiunile companiilor care vând băuturi spirtoase au fost afectate după anunțul chinez”.Iar ziarul german Die Zeit atenționează că Beijingul ”a inițiat deja o anchetă antidumping privind băuturile alcoolice distilate și alte produse din UE, cum ar fi carnea de porc și produsele lactate.În același timp, guvernul chinez a părut dispus să negocieze cu privire la tarifele planificate pentru autovehicule ale UE. Măsurile impuse acum ar putea fi, prin urmare, un posibil mijloc de a exercita presiuni în cadrul negocierilor.Producătorii francezi de coniac se simt „ostatici” ai conflictului comercial legat de mașinile electrice.Companiile auto care se tem de dezavantaje pe piața chineză caută și ele un acord. Deoarece acest lucru îi afectează în special pe producătorii germani, guvernul federal s-a pronunțat împotriva tarifelor auto din UE, dar nu a reușit s-și impună punctul de vedere”.

In July, violent riots and looting sprees ripped through South Africa - devastating KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng and further dismantling our already enfeebled economy. Our country's week of shame came at a colossal cost of R50bn in lost output, together with the destruction of over 3,000 shops and the theft of almost R120,000 in cash from ATMs. A number of malls in KZN, owned and managed by Exemplar REITail, were completely ravaged. Jason McCormick, the Chief Executive of Exemplar, did an hour-long presentation at the BizNews Investment Conference earlier this month titled ‘72 hours of Anarchy'. His presentation provided a riveting inside look into the sequence of events which all but desecrated several of Exemplar's properties. Following his presentation, McCormick sat down with BizNews founder Alec Hogg to further discuss his personal experience and answer questions posed by delegates at BNIC#2 (audio below). Throughout his entire presentation and subsequent Q&A, McCormick demonstrated an exemplary degree of strength and vulnerability. Despite his tumultuous experience, McCormick stated; ‘My overarching feeling coming through all of this is that the good people outnumber the bad.'

I went to Cognac last month and I came back with VERY heavy luggage full of beautiful bottles, an entirely new appreciation for brandy, and an epic series of episodes! This week we kick off our Cognac series.  First up is David Boileau, a Cognac educator and ambassador since 2006 for the BNIC - the professional organization behind Cognac. I also spoke with Jacques Blanc who is the house historian and tour guide of Maison Ferrand of Pierre Ferrand Cognac.   This week's featured cocktail is the signature drink of Cognac: The Summit1.5 ounces Cognac VSOP 2 ounces lemon-lime soda 4 thin slices fresh ginger 1 lime peel 1 long piece cucumber Put lime peel and ginger into glass, pour in 3/4 oz Cognac, lightly muddle. Fill half the glass with ice, and stir. Pour in the remaining Cognac.
