Barry and Abigail discuss Catching a Wave by Steve & Teresa and sample Kewalo's Cream Ale, CoCoWeizen, and Hop Island from Honolulu Beerworks in Honolulu, Hawaii. After a failed Hawaiian music scouting mission involving a fabulous live performance - but no CDs to take home! - by John Mahi, Barry purchased this album at Aloha Got Soul, a Honolulu-based record label championing new music and rare reissues from Hawaii! While there, he also purchased Lead Me to the Garden by ʻĀina, From These Shores (various artists), Lemuria by Lemuria, and BLUE by Dae Hon. We previously reviewed Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii, in our episode Hi (Peter Gabriel & Maui Brewing Co.). Abigail and Barry both relied heavily on Huapala Hawaiian Music and Hula Archives for background research and lyrics on this album! Read the lyrics, translations, and other background information for these songs! Aloha ʻIa ʻO Waiʻanae Nani Waiʻaleʻale ʻAuhea ʻOe ʻAlekoki South Sea Sadie / My Little Grass Shack Kahoʻolawe Song Tahauala Wai O Ke Aniani Read more about banana flavoring and Gros Michel bananas! The opening of ‘Alekoki reminded Abigail of Jack Johnson music. This led to a discussion of slack-key guitar. Read more! The appearance of the humuhumunukunukuapua'a in My Little Grass Shack took Abigail back in time to the first time she ever heard of the humuhumunukunukuapua'a, in the song HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUA'A from the High School Musical 2 Original Soundtrack. We played a sample of Maile Lau Li'i Li'i by Bob Brozman and Ledward Kaapana. Check out Aloha Got Soul on Bandcamp to purchase digital copies of their albums! Up next… Infinity on High by Fall Out Boy Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic! Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!
HAWAII, ladies and gentlemen: our 50th state, a subtropical archipelago of 137 volcanic islands arising from the Pacific Ocean, 2000 miles southwest of the U.S. mainland. Unique in many ways, it's a rich multi-ethnic melting pot of indigenous Hawaiian, Polynesian, East and Southeast Asian, and North American cultures. All this diversity gives Hawaiian music a sweetness and charm that led to popularity for the steel guitar and the ukulele in the early 20th century, and a revival of the so-called "slack key" or re-tuned finger-style guitar in the 1970s. The languid pace and tropical ambience of the music echoes the astonishing beauty of the natural setting. One visit to the Garden Island of Kauai turns a word like "paradise" from hyperbole...to description. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the languid music and lush subtropical ambience of Hawaii, on a program called SLACK KEY PARADISE. Music is by BRUCE KAPHAN & JAKE SHIMABUKURO, BOB BROZMAN & LEDWARD KAAPANA, KEOLA BEAMER & R.CARLOS NAKAI, TAIMANE, KAWIKA KAHIAPO, and WAYNE POWELL. There's going to be a free form mix of sounds this week with some ‘scenes of devastation' as well as some blues and tradition. We'll set the tone with a song that inspired the title lines from The Pine Hill Project and then head into some tradition and some covers that speak in the language of the sacred and secular…from Saturday night at the juke to Sunday morning in the pew. A great mix of sounds from some classic female blues gems from the 1940s like Wea Bea Booze and Ethel Waters. We'll also go down to the crossroads and Deep Elem with the likes of Champion Jack Dupree and T-Bone Walker, some deeper/darker blues from Geeshie Wiley and Blind Lemon Jefferson as well. But we'll also fill the air with the tops in great interpretations from Van Dyke Parks, Willie Watson and Bob Brozman. Join us for some ‘last kind words' from the Rocky Road Blues to James Alley on a Friday morning in West County.

Blake discusses the evolution of his unique fingerstyle technique, which draws on sources ranging from Michael Hedges, West Africa, and Bob Brozman, Blake's onetime teacher. Blake's playing is steeped in traditional folk, blues, and ethnic music, but it's seldom retro. He inevitably twists his influences into startling new configurations that feel simultaneously old and new, often employing slide and fretless guitar to stretch the boundaries of intonation and groove. His latest solo album is Mutable Set, released just a few weeks ago. Debashish Bhattacharya is an Indian classical musician, singer, composer and instrument pioneer. Debashish has redefined Indian classical music over the last 25 years by performing on slide guitar, and through introducing new techniques, sounds and instruments to the music. He has taught more than a thousand students, created a new genre (Hindustani Slide Guitar), and performed in more than two thousand concerts and workshops, with Grammy nominations and several world music awards. He invented his own slide-guitars, unique to his compositions, which he calls the "Trinity of Guitars". These hollow neck instruments are the 24-string chaturangui, the 14 string gandharvi and the anandi, a 4-string lap steel ukulele. I first met Debashish at the Winnipeg Folk Festival through our mutual friend Bob Brozman, and then had the chance to work with him in a collaboration at the Vancouver Folk Festival the next year. He is an incredibly accomplished musician, and also an excellent fellow and a sheer joy to hang out with! Enjoy my conversation with Debashish Bhattacharya.

Skinny Dippin;' in the Oil '0' Joy indeed, brothers and sisters...this weeks journey promises nothing but hopefully delivers goodness from the Purple Grotto! Every 2nd Saturday of every month I take my traveling monkeys, records, cd's and sometimes 78's on the road to fleece unsuspecting record collectors out of their hard earned moolah....actually I provide quality records and "satisfaction guaranteed" returns, etc. This week on the DRRShow we have some cool s**t to lay on your lobes.... Set 1: Opening Salvo.... Georgio [Moroder] starts off the show with a 45 rpm on the HANSA [Europe] DUNHILL [USA] label....a killer snotfest recorded in 1972 but sounding more like 1965..."Watch Your Step" Link Wray proves once again that he's the king of all things that crunch with "The Wild One". The Linkster never fails to deliver....The West Coast Pop Art & Experimental Band from their 1st Warners LP and one of my favorites "Shifting Sands". The 5 Royals wrap up the 1st set with a killer R&B number "Say It" from Sid Nathan's King Records 1957. Set 2: Yes from their 1st LP and what is considered "the Peter Banks Era" with a Beatles cover: "Every Little Things She Does"...I have to be honest I dig the 1st 2 LP's Waaaay better than what came after but it's like another band after the 2nd so I dig those also...Bob Brozman a true "wizard of the strings" [not taking anything away from Roy Smeck] kills with "Hilo March" which always gets me "Dancing Barefoot" by NJ's own Feelies. Once only available on a flexi from the Bob Magazine, "Barefoot" can be had on CD if you look for it. I went to turntable #1 and dropped on the 2nd FREE LP...."I'll Be Creeping" from Island / A&M records to round off the halfway point of the show. Set 3: We "Hilo March" back to Hawaii where our friends 7th Order call homebase these days for a special offer:...…..If you email: info@7thorder.com and mention that you heard it on the Dangerous R&R Show, Daniel will send a link to download "The Lake Of Memory" CD which has the great Martin Pugh playing on some if not all the cuts. Tell Daniel I said "A hui hou". Yes makes an appearance again this time from their 2nd LP with another cover song "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed" a Richie Havens song from one of his better LP's "Something Else Again". The brits are on fire so I'm goin' along for the ride...Tramline with a cover of Stephen Still's "R&R Woman". Did I say "killlller?" How about the Buff Springfield themselves with the opening track from BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD AGAIN....Mr. Soul. A Neil Young song that I still listen to today. I got this track off the brand new Buffalo Springfield Boxset / Vinyl.....RECOMMENDED! We’ll end this weeks show with a rarity from the U.K...Andwella’s Dream from their first LP called Love and Poetry with a classic “Felix”...... Thanks for listening / streaming and I'll be back next week.....
Deze keer weer een zomerse aflevering met een aantal van Hubert's Eeuwige Zomerhits: van Adreano Celentano tot Francoise Hardy.Maar ook zonnige klanken van Bob Brozman tot Gaby Pahinui.

An eclectic two hours tonight, after a break last Wednesday. We celebrated the music of Bob Brozman and George Jones, who both passed away recently. We also celebrated the music of Willie Nelson, who's still alive and well, and now 80 years young. Summer festivals featured this evening were the Vancouver Folk Music Festival (official lineup announcement May 9th) and the Starbelly Jam Festival (Crawford Bay, BC). Both take place July 19-21, 2013.As our recent heat wave confirms, summer is not far off! So get ready to enjoy some live music, whether indoors or out. Big hugs to all, and thanks for your ongoing support.xo,val folkoasis@gmail.com

For the month of March every show will start with a female artist...this week Sharon Tandy takes you down a "One Way Street" followed by a rockin' version of "Our Day Will Come". A visit to Brazil to check out the scene there in 1968 with Gilberto Gil & Oz Mutantes...slick? Yeah but not to worry when mensa rejects The Del Counts are on hand to do the "Bird Dog".....a classic from string wizard Bob Brozman and new [to this century anyway] music from The Yellow Moon Band.Bonniwell Music Machine makes a stand with "Absolutely Positively" so that Johnny Cash can spend some "Time of the Preacher". One of our faves...West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band plays on the beach with "Shifting Sands" and 16 Horsepower breaks out some disturbing banjo and a "Black Soul Choir....speaking of banjos.....the show ends with a late-nite-radio classic from the 60's..."The Endless Tunnel" from San Francisco artists / poets Serpent Power.....
