He then became a K9 handler in 1997. Brian has since worked 5 dual purpose K9's. 4 were dual purpose narcotics dogs and his current is a dual purpose explosive dog. Glenn, Pat, and Cameron Ford came together to take a hard look at the existing 'system' that governs many dog training practices. This meeting ignited an important discussion, probing into long-standing practices that have become ubiquitous within the industry. We raised concerns over the rigid thinking that is prevalent in the field. This often manifests as a cult-like dedication to a single methodology, stunting the growth of new ideas and innovation. Our conversation highlighted how this narrow-minded approach creates an environment where trainers aggressively defend their chosen 'system', often to the detriment of their professional development. In an act akin to religious fervour, these individuals quickly reject or even openly attack novel ideas and methodologies. Such behaviour creates an unfriendly atmosphere that prevents the adoption of emerging research and innovative techniques that could potentially revolutionize dog training practices. Against this backdrop, we proposed a solution rooted in openness and flexibility. Rather than clinging tightly to one specific approach, we suggest trainers should continually seek knowledge from a wide array of methods. By promoting a culture of open dialogue and intellectual curiosity, we believe an efficient, multifaceted 'system' could emerge in dog training. Furthermore, we emphasised the need to challenge and reassess the industry's deeply entrenched beliefs. They argued that a 'system' should be adaptable and dynamic, capable of evolving with new discoveries in animal behaviour and learning. For the field to truly progress, we all stressed the importance of breaking free from the rigid constraints of some existing methods to embrace a more holistic understanding of dog training. If there was a "Workingdog Handler / Trainer Hall of Fame" Cameron Ford would be one of the guys already being in there. He's been around policedogs ever since he was a child, getting his first impressions from his neighbor who worked with dogs. Later being a military dog handler in Germany, then a police dog handler, SWAT operator, instructor and so on up until now, where he runs Ford K9, has two employees and a lot of dogs, projects and passion for his work. The cool thing about Cameron is, that he never quit being curious on things in the dogtraining. He trained with other animals in a project for the Navy, also with several Seal teams but more important, he began to find dialogues with researchers, scientists, people from the lab and managed to build a bridge on how to implement the theoretical knowledge to the practical side of things. Now he works with different universities, supporting different projects and helps gaining data himself also by doing the "cognition classes" and many more. As the much demonised protest group receives its first positive coverage in the aftermath, Cameron joins us to face down the movement's critics: about why they're targeting motorways, whether he worries for activists' safety after enraged motorists attack them, why this form of protest is justified - and what future he fears is coming unless more people fight back. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. In England, climate protesters walked onto the M25 - the country's busiest motorway - sat down and glued themselves to the asphalt. Traffic ground to a halt while the police unstuck them. Their demands: insulate all of Britain's public housing to stop more than 8,000 people from dying each year from the cold. The insulation would also help reduce climate pollution and create thousands of jobs. But, in a country known for their stiff upper lip, the public went bonkers over commute times getting longer. I meet up with Cameron Ford - to find out what the hell's going on. Cameron was involved in many of the latest roadway demonstrations and he's a carpenter working to insulate public housing.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Two researchers at UCF are developing a cough drop that can reduce the spread of COVID-19 by making saliva heavier and stickier - it makes sneeze and cough particles fall rather than float. But is there really a market for such a product? Paul Jarley talks with researchers Michael Kinzel and Kareem Ahmed to find out the science behind the lozenge, how soon it could hit store shelves and the similarities to products you already have around the house.   Featured Guests Kareem Ahmed - Assistant Professor, College of Engineering & Computer Science, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Michael Kinzel - Assistant Professor, College of Engineering & Computer Science, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Cameron Ford - Director, UCF Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Michael Pape - Dr. Phillips Entrepreneur in Residence; Lecturer, Management Episode Highlights 0:49 - The origin of the COVID-19 cough drop idea 2:58 - How mechanical engineers got into cough drops 5:18 - How can the COVID cough drop make it to stores? 7:58 - Legal hurdles for the COVID cough drop 11:53 - Who is the target audience for this? 16:27 - How long will it take to get to market? 25:42 - ...Ketchup? 28:48 - What are the learning lessons for students? 33:07 - Final thoughts from Paul Jarley, Cameron Ford and Michael Pape Click to listen to the extended "geek" edition of this episode or visit business.ucf.edu/podcast!   Episode Transcription Paul Jarley:                         2020 has been the year of the coronavirus, and big money is being put in to find a vaccine. But what if I told you that the spread of COVID isn't a medical problem, but rather an engineering one. And that two UCF Aerospace Engineers might have a simple, low-cost solution. Would you invest in their project? Paul Jarley:                         This show is all about separating hype from fundamental change. I'm Paul Jarley, Dean of the College of Business here at UCF. I've got lots of questions. To get answers, I'm talking to people with interesting insights into the future of business. Have you ever wondered, is this really a thing? Onto our show. Paul Jarley:                         Ideas come from unexpected places. Listen to Michael Kinzel, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at UCF. Explain the origin of the idea for a COVID cough drop. Michael Kinzel:                 It was kind of funny, right? My wife was arguing with one of our neighbors on Facebook, about aerosols and how far they can kind of pass from one person to another. And one of the things about aerosols is they're very small, and if you cough, for example, at that time, they were showing that... Actually not cough, sneeze, if you sneeze, they were showing that these aerosols can travel at 27 feet. My wife was arguing with neighbors like, "Hey, you need to be careful as you go by somebody, maybe move out of the sidewalk." Because of these aerosols. And it drove me to think, how do you make these... What do we do in engineering to make things not form aerosols? Michael Kinzel:                 And one of the things that drives that is underlying fluid dynamics processes that associated with how thick your fluid is. So for example, if you think about trying to make small droplets out of oil, it's a lot more difficult than making small droplets out of water, or even on the other end alcohol. So this is kind of driving, it was kind of, how do you get to a scenario where you don't enable droplets to travel 27 feet? And if you make them large, they're no longer aerosols and they have a tendency to fall. So one way to potentially enable that is by making a lozenge that actually alters your saliva. So that it behaves or has a tendency to form these large droplets that don't persist for very long distances. Paul Jarley:                         Okay. So first, Michael,

In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: Running detection training on knowns, single blinds, and double blinds and how to know which to use.  The researcher behind handler knowledge on detection tasks.  Being self-aware as a handler and trainer on your own body language and behaviors. The difference between testing and training.    Key Takeaways: Training requires intervention.  When you’re running double blind runs, you can’t manage rewards appropriately. Because of such, you don’t want to over do these runs.  There are ways to train without giving the dog any feedback, even when you, as the handler/trainer, knows where the hides are.  There must be a body of work in research, not just taking singular studies as gospel truth or gold standards.     "In these double blind runs, we have to be really careful to note that it's not training, it's really testing. And if we want to test the dog, then that's fine." —  Jerry Bradshaw   Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   References:  Handler beliefs affect scent detection dog outcomes - Lisa Lit, Julie B. Training dogs in drive and drive capping. Learning how to read dogs during training exercises.  The changing landscape of training due to current events of police/working dogs.    Key Takeaways: Focus on the task, not the cosmetics of the indication. You don’t want to take away from search or odor recognition.  Good training is good training, no matter what you do. Independence is great! You do not want the dog to be completely dependent on the handler.  Put the focus on the hunting, the detection. It’s not called finding. You don’t want to be focused on the end.  The earlier you train the final response, the more you have to worry about flashing.   "You have to be flexible as a trainer and train to the dog in front of you. A couple of weeks ago I emceed a panel at the 5point Adventure Film Festival, a 4 day event in Carbondale, Colorado chocked full of inspiring films, creative art, insightful panels, and a whole lot of playing, eating and drinking outside. As I reflect on the overall experience of the festival, I have to say it was pretty incredible. Between the amazing 5point staff, the magic of the Carbondale community, and the world class outdoor recreation, it's hard to beat. Needless to say, I highly recommend checking it out.  Today on the show, I'll be sharing a live recording of the panel that I lead, which was a discussion about the 5points (or core values) that the film festival was built on - purpose, respect, commitment, humility, and balance. The aim was to explore how these values align with the panelists personal, professional, and spiritual life and growth. The panel included an eclectic mix of community leaders, film makers, adventurers and entrepreneurs.  I'd like to give a proper introduction and bio to each of the 5 panels because they are each doing such exciting work.  Regna Jones is the Executive Director of the 5point film festival and is no stranger to arts-based community non-profits, having led operations at Aspen Film and owned Paradise Theatre in Paonia Colorado. Although she is new to 5point, she is already a beloved member of the staff and community. Cameron Ford and Charlie Turnbull are Australian cinematographers and directors. In 2018, the debuted one of the most popular films at 5point called The Bikes of Wrath, which documents the story of 5 friends as they attempt to cycle from Oklahoma to California in honor of the famous John Steinbeck novel, the Grapes of Wrath. Cameron and Charlie just completed a sequel journey floating the entirety of the Mississippi River in their newest project, Floatin' with Huck, which is due to come out some time next year.  Ian Glover is the founder of Big Dog Surf Camp in Marin, California and is the subject of a film directed by Perry Gershkow called Glory Ride. The film depicts Ian (also known as Big Dog), as he empowers kids by teaching them to surf, but also explores a gut wrenching personal story of homelessness, death, and gratitude.  Sarah Herron is the founder of She Lift, which empowers girls with physical differences to discover confidence through outdoor adventure and body-positive mentorship. She recently produced a film being showcased at 5point called Dead Last, which shares the story of Kaitlin Heatherly on a quest to compete at the Paraclimbing World Championships.  Just as a heads up, this conversation really pulled at my heart strings (and so did the entire 5point experience), so if you're a movie buff or a sucker for the feels - this episode is for you.  If you're interested in learning more about the films and the people behind them, head on over to 5pointfilm.org and as always, I'll have all the details in the show notes at jeremyrjensen.com. A before we dive in, a huge thanks to the whole staff at 5point, especially Regna Jones, Meredith McKee and Sarah Jane Johnson. Also, a big hug to Deva and Eaden Shantay at True Nature Healing Arts for hosting us in such a beautiful venue, and Frank Scotti of Nomad, Inc for the killer photography work.  Cool without further ado, my conversation with Regna Jones, Cameron Ford, Charlie Turnbull, Ian Glover, and Sarah Herron - live from the 5point Adventure Film Festival.  Enjoy!

Paul Jarley:                       Then a funny thing happened starting in the early 1990s. Universities started to develop entrepreneurship programs. Another decade passed and Berkeley started developing what has come to be known as lean start up. It had a coming out party in 2011, with the publication of Eric Riles book by the same name. But, are universities and business schools really the place to start businesses? Paul Jarley:                       I had my doubts. We excel at getting rule followers great jobs in companies who are looking for functional talent. We really aren't geared up to help people who want to color outside the lines, pursue their crazy dreams, even when people say they're wrong. That said, a quarter of my students say they want to start a business, and students seem to love the lean startup methodology. Cameron Ford, Director of our Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, has a pretty obvious reason why. Cameron Ford:                Our students love the lean approach because, of course, they don't have any resources. So-

Stopping the boats. It's one of the most fraught topics in Australian politics, and most of the time it comes out in two soundbites: saving lives at sea, and securing our borders. Abdul Aziz Muhamat 'I was instructed to … select the children on the basis of how young they looked – because we wanted to send the message to people smuggling networks that even the youngest children were eligible for transfer to the island.' Greg Lake, former Director of Offshore Processing in the Department of Immigration In this episode, Aziz tells Michael what it actually feels like to make that journey, and why he made the decision to get on a boat bound for Australia. What was going through his mind? Did he know what he was getting himself into before he stepped onboard? Michael also speaks to somebody with a unique perspective to offer, because it was his job to stop the boats. Former immigration department official Greg Lake tells Michael about the extraordinary lengths he was asked to go to to carry out official government policy – and why he ultimately walked away from the task. A major ruling by the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court offers hope for Aziz – but, amidst the promise, the men receive devastating news from Nauru. Meanwhile, they're encouraged to accept the option to resettle in PNG. So why doesn't Aziz take it? Aziz, with his smuggled phone 'We don't know what next, but this is really one of the first good news that we ever heard.' Aziz When Aziz learns of Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court ruling that detention on Manus Island is illegal, he sends Michael messages describing his joy and excitement. But his elation soon turns to confusion as he and the other men understand they're anything but free. Meanwhile, news of two separate self-immolations in Nauru's centre reaches Manus – and hits Aziz hard. Aziz and the men are always being reminded of two options to end their detention: go home or resettle in PNG. We've already heard why he can't go home. Aziz describes the sometimes hostile relations with local Manusians – including the violent confrontation resulting in the widely-reported murder of his fellow detainee, Reza Berati – as well as some of the things detainees had been told about PNG in order to dissuade them from escaping. Aziz explains why he firmly believes that starting a new life there is neither safe nor possible … and reveals the other fundamentally important reason why he won't accept the offer to live in Papua New Guinea. Aziz's life has been a story of chance – and choice. As Michael pieces together Aziz's journey from Sudan to Manus, he realises Aziz has been searching for a safe place for about eight years. So what gives him the ability, and the energy, to speak out? How has Aziz fought for so long, and what makes him want to be ‘the messenger'? ‘I'm pretending like I'm really happy, and laugh, and you know, smiling on the phones and doing stuff like that – so they feel like, “Oh, my son is really living in a good environment”. So they think like that, but the opposite is the truth.' Aziz Aziz tells Michael, ‘I have got some people ...waiting for me. They love me, they want me to be with them.' Haltingly, and sometimes with great difficulty, Aziz starts to share stories about his home, the family that he longs to see, and why he fled. Looking to find out more, Michael speaks to Sudan expert Anne Bartlett about the current situation there. As Aziz shares snapshots from his past, Anne talks Michael through the conflict in Sudan, which, despite leaving the headlines long ago, continues to unfold. Michael worries that he's adding to Aziz's trauma by digging up painful memories – ever aware of how hard it is to have these kinds of conversations in short, overlapping messages, without the benefit of reading someone's signals face to face. Meanwhile, Aziz weighs up how much to tell his family about Manus, and explains to Michael why he's sometimes tortured by regret. As the world reacts to the Trump administration's new US border policies, Aziz's situation is as uncertain as ever, with no end in sight. Life on Manus grinds on.  ‘When we see someone who is just hurting himself or he is trying to commit suicide, sometimes you just drag yourself away because of not getting the pictures in your head.' Aziz In this episode, Aziz and Michael start to get to know each other – and Aziz begins to paint a picture for Michael of daily life in the detention centre.Where is it, and why is it there? What are the conditions really like, and what's it like to live there with more than 800 other men and no prospect of release?Back in Melbourne, Michael meets Aziz's friend John Zammit, a former Manus Island psychologist who shares his experiences of the detention centre, and his recollections of Aziz. With help from John, and from Aziz's many messages, Michael pieces together a sense of Aziz's daily routine, just as order in the camp gets turned upside down … Warning: This episode of The Messenger mentions suicide and self-harm. As a journalist, Michael Green had spoken to a lot of people who've been held in detention centres. Some were there for a few weeks, and others for as long as six years. But he'd never spoken to someone who was still inside a detention centre, and that's because Australia's immigration department, and the governments of Nauru and Manus, have traditionally made it very difficult for journalists to communicate with detainees. Visitors aren't allowed to make recordings, and the people who came by boat weren't initially allowed to use their own phones. ‘Same day – or different day – same shit. But still alive.' Aziz Then, early last year, Michael was given the phone number of a man who was still in detention on Manus Island. His name was Aziz. He was from Sudan, and he had a smuggled phone. But that was all Michael knew. So he sent him a text message saying hello, and he asked if we could speak on the phone. Aziz wrote back saying the reception in his room was too weak for calls. Michael thought they'd have to communicate entirely by text. Then he realised that on WhatsApp, you can send little voice messages that get delivered whenever you're in range. And so, in March 2016, Michael and Aziz first made contact. Transcript Download a PDF transcript of this episode here.
