In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw and Cameron Ford discuss: The creation of PSA and evolution of dog sport. How the rigidity in traditional dog sports has led to innovation and creativity. Being open to adaptation not fighting against it. Increasing complexity in training detection.  The responsibility of having an online platform for your dog training.  Training based on experience and on research.    Key Takeaways: PSA exploded in popularity the last decade due to the prevalence of younger trainers and social media.  A lot of traditional dog sport is built around breeding programs and registering your dogs. PSA allows for dogs of any breed and age as long as they can handle the training.  If you're interested in your dogs learning detection, teach your puppies to track and hunt. It is key for police work.  Training detection dogs is about more than odor, no matter what changes have occurred over the years.  Adjusting to what the dog is doing during training when they aren't following your progressions is where the fun and intrigue comes in.  Training is not a race. Do it right from the beginning and it will create a stronger, better dog than if you try and do it all in just a few weeks.    "Unfortunately, a lot of dog trainers get married to doing something because it's the way they've always done and they feel comfortable with it. But I think you have to be smart enough to jettison what's not working or is less efficient." —  Jerry Bradshaw   Contact Cameron: Website: https://www.fordk9.com/  Website: https://stratosk9.com/ K9s Talking Scents: https://www.fordk9.com/podcasts/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbLa_PL0uHeOK5WsSgjR-Mw  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fordk9/    Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training:  www.tarheelcanine.com Youtube:  tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon:   patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine  Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/  Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/    Sponsors:  ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: https://thedriveco.com/  The Drive Company Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedrive.co    Find out more about Hold The Line Conference 2026 at https://htlk9.com/    Train Hard, train smart, be safe.   Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Glenn, Pat, and Cameron Ford came together to take a hard look at the existing 'system' that governs many dog training practices. This meeting ignited an important discussion, probing into long-standing practices that have become ubiquitous within the industry. We raised concerns over the rigid thinking that is prevalent in the field. This often manifests as a cult-like dedication to a single methodology, stunting the growth of new ideas and innovation. Our conversation highlighted how this narrow-minded approach creates an environment where trainers aggressively defend their chosen 'system', often to the detriment of their professional development. In an act akin to religious fervour, these individuals quickly reject or even openly attack novel ideas and methodologies. Such behaviour creates an unfriendly atmosphere that prevents the adoption of emerging research and innovative techniques that could potentially revolutionize dog training practices. Against this backdrop, we proposed a solution rooted in openness and flexibility. Rather than clinging tightly to one specific approach, we suggest trainers should continually seek knowledge from a wide array of methods. By promoting a culture of open dialogue and intellectual curiosity, we believe an efficient, multifaceted 'system' could emerge in dog training. Furthermore, we emphasised the need to challenge and reassess the industry's deeply entrenched beliefs. They argued that a 'system' should be adaptable and dynamic, capable of evolving with new discoveries in animal behaviour and learning. For the field to truly progress, we all stressed the importance of breaking free from the rigid constraints of some existing methods to embrace a more holistic understanding of dog training. But you might have seen more about the activists who threw oil on a Gustav Klimt painting in Vienna yesterday. Or the protesters who brought the M25 to a standstill last week. In an era of apparently increasing direct action, what's the media's role? And by giving the latest stunt publicity, is it fanning the flames? Guests: Fiona Harvey, Environment Correspondent, The Guardian, Cameron Ford, spokesperson, Insulate Britain, Rich Felgate, documentary-maker, Wolfgang Blau, Managing Partner, the Climate Hub at the Brunswick Group, and Danny Shaw, former BBC home affairs correspondent. A couple of weeks ago I emceed a panel at the 5point Adventure Film Festival, a 4 day event in Carbondale, Colorado chocked full of inspiring films, creative art, insightful panels, and a whole lot of playing, eating and drinking outside. As I reflect on the overall experience of the festival, I have to say it was pretty incredible. Between the amazing 5point staff, the magic of the Carbondale community, and the world class outdoor recreation, it's hard to beat. Needless to say, I highly recommend checking it out.  Today on the show, I'll be sharing a live recording of the panel that I lead, which was a discussion about the 5points (or core values) that the film festival was built on - purpose, respect, commitment, humility, and balance. The aim was to explore how these values align with the panelists personal, professional, and spiritual life and growth. The panel included an eclectic mix of community leaders, film makers, adventurers and entrepreneurs.  I'd like to give a proper introduction and bio to each of the 5 panels because they are each doing such exciting work.  Regna Jones is the Executive Director of the 5point film festival and is no stranger to arts-based community non-profits, having led operations at Aspen Film and owned Paradise Theatre in Paonia Colorado. Although she is new to 5point, she is already a beloved member of the staff and community. Cameron Ford and Charlie Turnbull are Australian cinematographers and directors. In 2018, the debuted one of the most popular films at 5point called The Bikes of Wrath, which documents the story of 5 friends as they attempt to cycle from Oklahoma to California in honor of the famous John Steinbeck novel, the Grapes of Wrath. Cameron and Charlie just completed a sequel journey floating the entirety of the Mississippi River in their newest project, Floatin' with Huck, which is due to come out some time next year.  Ian Glover is the founder of Big Dog Surf Camp in Marin, California and is the subject of a film directed by Perry Gershkow called Glory Ride. The film depicts Ian (also known as Big Dog), as he empowers kids by teaching them to surf, but also explores a gut wrenching personal story of homelessness, death, and gratitude.  Sarah Herron is the founder of She Lift, which empowers girls with physical differences to discover confidence through outdoor adventure and body-positive mentorship. She recently produced a film being showcased at 5point called Dead Last, which shares the story of Kaitlin Heatherly on a quest to compete at the Paraclimbing World Championships.  Just as a heads up, this conversation really pulled at my heart strings (and so did the entire 5point experience), so if you're a movie buff or a sucker for the feels - this episode is for you.  If you're interested in learning more about the films and the people behind them, head on over to 5pointfilm.org and as always, I'll have all the details in the show notes at jeremyrjensen.com. A before we dive in, a huge thanks to the whole staff at 5point, especially Regna Jones, Meredith McKee and Sarah Jane Johnson. Also, a big hug to Deva and Eaden Shantay at True Nature Healing Arts for hosting us in such a beautiful venue, and Frank Scotti of Nomad, Inc for the killer photography work.  Cool without further ado, my conversation with Regna Jones, Cameron Ford, Charlie Turnbull, Ian Glover, and Sarah Herron - live from the 5point Adventure Film Festival.  Enjoy!
