Escuchar audio

Today on Boston Public Radio: We begin the show by talking about GBH's new multi-media series, “The Big Quit,” and asking listeners what they have quit in their lives since the start of the pandemic. Art Caplan discusses the first FDA authorization of e-cigarettes and the ethics of jumping the line for booster shots. Caplan is the Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Professor and founding head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU School of Medicine in New York City. Juliette Kayyem talks about a slew of flight cancellations by Southwest Airlines, and why she thinks Donald Trump might run in the 2024 Presidential Election. Kayyem is an analyst for CNN, former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security and faculty chair of the homeland security program at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Richard Blanco reads poems in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, including "The Latin Deli: An Ars Poetica" by Judith Ortiz Cofer, “Hearing Spider-Man Speaking Spanish in Times Square” by Ariel Francisco and “Suspended from School, the Pachuco's Grandson Watches Happy Days While his Homie Fulfills Prophecy” by Michael Torres. Blanco is the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history. His latest book, "How To Love A Country," deals with various socio-political issues that shadow America. Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll talks about how Salem is adapting its Halloween festivities for the pandemic, and how the town negotiates the holiday's festivities with its darker history of witch trials. Driscoll is the mayor of Salem. We end the show by talking about where listeners can find the best Halloween displays, in the lead up to Oct. 31.

"Another way to say 'Mexican'" - Luis Valdez's Zoot Suit This week Mr. Chavez and I get a bit personal with a discussion of a classic in Chicano Cinema . . . 1981's Luis Valdez directed Zoot Suit. The story of Enrique "Hank" Leyvas (Reyna in the theatrical play and film) and his - and his crews' - railroading into San Quentin for the 1941"Sleepy Lagoon" Murder. In a case that was a clear abuse of the justice system, Leyvas was pushed through a trial that was little more than a circus designed to give the impression of justice. Valdez's film is photographed and performed as the play itself was produced both in Los Angeles and on Broadway. Mr. Chavez and I examine the cultural importance of the film, but also the history of Los Angeles, race-relations, and the ongoing fight for representation. This is an episode that - definitely - grabbed a hold of both of us and carried us to places that deserve discussion, but which are so often ignored. Take a listen. We think you may learn a li'l bit about a hidden history. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

Pobre maestra Lupita.

Welcome to Season 6 of Talk Art! Recorded on 10th April 2020, we chat to Troy Michie, the acclaimed American collage artist, painter, interdisciplinary installation artist, and sculptor based in New York City. Michie's work is often in dialogue with the canon of collage; as well as investigating society's understanding of race, gender, sexuality, and other fields of identity and power. This episode is released on the anniversary of the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles from June 3-8th 1943, which has been frequently referenced in Michie's work.We discuss the history of collage, vintage erotic and pornographic magazines, his hometown of El Paso, a border city between USA and Mexico, growing up bilingual, lies about immigration, racial stereotypes, media misconceptions and the ‘fear of the other’. We explore woven paper collage, a new development in Troy’s practice, as well as assemblage works on wooden panels, and sewing through paper. We explore the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots and his body of work referencing the dapper & flamboyant Zoot Suit style, Jazz music, Pachuco culture and its long lasting impact on popular culture including mainstream films Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Bugsy Malone and Dick Tracey. We discuss camouflage theory & Roland Penrose's disruptive patterning theory, Razzle Dazzle warships, queerness and the camouflaging the self within society, safety of marginalised communities and in particular the violence and murders of the transgender community in New York. His admiration for Nancy Brooks Brody, Mark Bradford, Magritte and the Surrealists, Méret Oppenheim, Frida Kahlo, Hannah Höch, Nouveau réalisme, Kara Walker, John Stezaker, Wangechi Mutu and Wilfredo Lam. From the low riders, the fashion, and the music, Michelle Sena introduces the long legacy of the culture, which is rooted in the Pachuco culture of the 40’s and 50’s, through her fashion brand. In this episode, we discuss the 150 different meanings behind the word “orale,” talk about the All Chola brand and it's growing reach, share stories about “the hustle,” and talk about our beloved neighborhood, “The Brick.” This episode was produced in partnership with ABQ Artwalk and The Ruppe.

Mojo Juju, founding member, songwriter and vocalist for notorious, seven-piece noir punk/garage switch bank ‘The Snake Oil Merchants’, sits down and tell us how she broke out on her own, although being told multiple times she was ‘too queer, too brown or not attractive enough to sell records.’ Mojo Juju draws inspiration from Jazz, early blues and Latin American ‘Pachuco’ culture of the 1930s and 1940s. Her latest album Native Tongue, discusses identity politics are coming from a place that is accessible to all — not just academics. “I wanted to do something that addressed it from my own perspective, but approached it in a way that was very personal – because I don’t think that you can remove the personal from the political or vice versa.” Producers: Brie Jones and Nicole De Palo

Diego Garcia, known as Twanguero, is considered as one of the best guitarists in Spain. Winner of the Latin Grammy he was named " “fire-breathing guitar hero” by the North American press. Twanguero got his first guitar at age 6 and the rest is history. He accompanied greats such as Bunbury, Calamaro, El Cigala, Urrutia, among others and only launched his own solo career two years ago His albums include PACHUCO and Argentina Songbook (Warner Music); he has toured Spain and the Americas , and was named a Gibson Guitar International Artist. PACHUCO, released in 2015 is a tight combination of rhythm, percussion, seductive melodies, played with the unique touch of an old golden Gibson, channeling Duane Eddy and pioneering Latino Twang Rockabilly Mambo. Korean-born, Seattle-raised songwriter and violinist Joe Kye threads sonic paths from Korea to a reimagined America using classical violin, loop pedals and unique songwriting and vocals in his new album, Migrants. Kye’s family moved from Korea to the US when he was six, struggling with the economic and cultural challenges, but a strong music education program in the Seattle public schools and the violin gave Kye a space he could control. He experimented with songwriting on the guitar and with singing, inspired by everyone from Mel Torme to Stevie Wonder. The discovery of the loop pedal in college blew open his musical world, allowing him to blend violin, swirls of pizzicato arpeggios, and percussion with clever lyrics and vocals. He now collaborates with a range of other artists, including MC Jason Chu and MC Rasar, and NYC composer/percussionist William Catanzaro.

Freddy Negrete - Guns, Gangs, Tattoos & Recovery... Freddy Negrete is a legendary tattoo artist based in Hollywood, CA. He's been profiled on numerous media and has tattooed numerous celebrities, musicians and sport personalities. Freddy was orphaned at the age of two when his mother and father, both Pachuco gangsters, went to jail. After a youth of foster care and boys' homes, Freddy went down the same path as his parents and lived a cycle of gangs, drugs, and incarceration. Freddy honed his skills as a tattooist in prison and is now a world-renowned pioneer of black and grey realism. Freddy endured countless ups and downs with addiction and suffered deadly health issues, but he asked for healing and, after a pivotal moment, he received it. He is now clean and sober and helping others in the community get out of the dangerous life he once lived. CLEAN DATE: Dec 20th, 2006 Listen to Freddy's story now! In this episode Jasmine talks to artist and vintage stylist J.C. De Luna of Barrio Dandy. In their conversation they discuss vintage collecting, styling in Latino communities, Pachuco/a history, Zoot Suits, and "style as resistance." She also talks to him about his participation in the exhibition at the Vincent Price Art Museum, "Tastemakers & Earthshakers: Notes from Los Angeles Youth Culture, 1943 – 2016." Jasmine recorded the chat when she was visiting her family in Los Angeles in December of 2016 at J.C.’s showroom so you may hear hustle and bustle in the background, but it just adds to the authentic LA experience. Original Post: Wednesday, February 7, 2007Remixed 2014This song is absolutely relentless. What starts out as a nice little ska song lasts a few bars, turns rather latin, and cops an attitude. This one definitely took on a life of it’s own. To learn more about the culture and inspiration, click the Wikipedia link below.Pachuco

Texan for Linguists; by Katy Jo Parker and Truman ‘Tex’ Beauregard; From Volume CLXI, Number 3, of Speculative Grammarian, April 2011 — This article is not about the descriptively interesting linguistic features of Texan dialects of English (such as incipient “fixin’”, singular “they”, modal stacking, second person plural “y’all”, “ain’t” and “cain’t”, “bidness”, “coke” for “soda”, etc.) nor is it about any of the interesting Spanish-related linguistic phenomena in Texas (such as “Spanglish”, Chicano and Tejano English, code-switching, or Pachuco slang). Yo!
