The 'Z Special Unit' was one of the most audacious and little known clandestine forces of WW2. It comprised Australian, British, New Zealand, Dutch, Timorese and other Allied personel. One of their most famous missions was 'Operation Jaywick'. This saw a disguised fishing vessel the 'MV Krait' sail from Exmouth Gulf to Singapore where the operatives, after paddling more than 50km, attacked Japanese ships at anchor before making their escape back to Australia. This extraordinary operation was followed by 81 other covert missions including the ill-fated Operation Rimau and Operation Semut. I had the privilege of speaking with Gavin Mortimer author of the Osprey Publication 'Z Special Unit' about the history and events surrounding this incredible force. Gavin is also the author of some other seminal books on the history of Special Forces including David Stirling: The Phony Major, The SBS in World War II and Merril's Marauders.

HAWAII, ladies and gentlemen: our 50th state, a subtropical archipelago of 137 volcanic islands arising from the Pacific Ocean, 2000 miles southwest of the U.S. mainland. Unique in many ways, it's a rich multi-ethnic melting pot of indigenous Hawaiian, Polynesian, East and Southeast Asian, and North American cultures. All this diversity gives Hawaiian music a sweetness and charm that led to popularity for the steel guitar and the ukulele in the early 20th century, and a revival of the so-called "slack key" or re-tuned finger-style guitar in the 1970s. The languid pace and tropical ambience of the music echoes the astonishing beauty of the natural setting. One visit to the Garden Island of Kauai turns a word like "paradise" from hyperbole...to description. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the languid music and lush subtropical ambience of Hawaii, on a program called SLACK KEY PARADISE. Music is by BRUCE KAPHAN & JAKE SHIMABUKURO, BOB BROZMAN & LEDWARD KAAPANA, KEOLA BEAMER & R.CARLOS NAKAI, TAIMANE, KAWIKA KAHIAPO, and WAYNE POWELL. Garden Island is a thin limestone sliver, 5km off the coast of Western Australia. It was an idyllic holiday destination until it became an important part of the defence of Fremantle during World War 2, protecting the Cockburn Sound and Southern approaches to the port. It was also the training ground of the famous 'Z' Special Unit, who paddled their kayaks into Singapore harbour to attack Japanese shipping. Today it is home to HMAS Stirling and the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet Base West.

Join us as we journey through the beauty and diversity of Hawaii. This podcast is your guide to understanding why these spots are etched in the memories of those who experience them and make it so I never tire of living here. East Shore to Windward side Venturing just 15 miles east of Honolulu leads to the serene beginning of Oahu's Windward Coast, stretching to Kahana Bay. Along this picturesque shoreline, abundant trails, beaches, lava tubes, and surf breaks await exploration, offering endless opportunities for hiking and beachcombing. Families often enjoy the paved Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail, while seasoned surfers tackle the challenging waves of Makapuʻu Beach and Sandy Beach.Sherwoods Beach in Waimānalo holds a special place in my heart. Its soft sands, gentle waves, and stunning backdrop of the Ko'olau mountains make it a beloved spot for family outings. After a day by the sea, the journey home is sprinkled with local delights like shave ice, lau lau, and malasadas, adding a flavorful touch to the experience.Further along Windward Oahu, Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach beckon windsurfers and kayakers with their pristine beauty. Kualoa Ranch, a vast 4,000-acre reserve, offers thrilling adventures such as zip lining and horseback riding, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich 'āina (land) heritage. And tucked away like a hidden treasure, Sherwood Beach enchants with its gentle waves and panoramic views of the majestic Ko'olau mountains. Upcountry Maui Every time I head to Maui one of my first treks is Upcountry and a visit to Haleakalā National Park. Spanning over 30,000 acres, the park is dominated by a dormant volcano, occupying 75 percent of Maui and soaring to 10,023 feet. Haleakalā is a sanctuary for numerous endangered and indigenous species, its name translating to "House of the Sun" in Hawaiian. Locals revere it as a sacred site where ancient high priests sought wisdom through meditation. Exploring Upcountry Maui, I suggest visiting the Saturday Upcountry Farmers Market in Makawao. Here, you'll discover an array of locally sourced delights, from tropical fruits to artisanal goods and fresh blooms. We always take a trip to Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm, where we stock up on Lavender soap, lotion, and sanitizer and always find something new to bring back to Honolulu that we can't find here. We Podcast About Hawaii Because We Love Hawaii Get Help Planning Your Trip Kauai South Shore The less developed island of Kauai is nicknamed the "Garden Island." Home to one of the wettest spots on Earth, Mount Waialeale, this destination receives a good amount of rain. But the South Shore is a slightly drier escape. This sunny swath of Kauai is popular among snorkelers, swimmers, and Poipu Beach resort guests. For sure, the South Shore has some of the best sunsets. Baby Beach, is I think one of the best places to see it, This is a protected cove just west of Poipu Beach, where you'll find "calm, ankle-deep waters, perfect for families with babies — hence the name — and small children." Also, a place known as Sunset Wall, a local favorite spot at Koloa Landing, is just down the road from Ko'a Kea Resort. Also, I love the Sunsets from Salt Pond Beach Park, where a protected lagoon with clear water offers a serene sunset experience. Hamakua Coast - Hawaii Island I love this drive so much that I can't wait to return to it every time I am on the Big Island. It starts with the Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive, conveniently nestled just a short drive north of Hilo on Highway 19, offering a delightful escape into the essence of old Hawai'i.

My trip so far: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=142282, https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=142279 I'm flew into Sydney Thursday afternoon. My… just asked what is my aussie tax id # so he can employ me in manual labor. I told about him about the riches that come from my emotional revelations on Youtube. Burn! I'm not flying to Australia for two months to work. I'm flying to Australia for two months to journal about my feelings while eating mangos and watching cricket. I don't think I've fully unpacked my deepest yearnings yet. Stay tuned! OTOH, if John Updike could write about azaleas, maybe this seminal blogger could broaden his perspective from himself to other forms of life. It's my first time in Australia since June of 2014 and my first time in Sydney since June 1985. Not bad with an Australian passport 30 years out of date! Aussie customs held back for half an hour to verify my citizenship and I got told if I wanted to come again without a visa, I needed to get an up to date Aussie passport. https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=142282 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_Cross,_New_South_Wales "Kings Cross is an inner-city locality of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 2 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. It is bounded by the suburbs of Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, Rushcutters Bay and Darlinghurst.[1] Colloquially known as The Cross, the area was once known for its music halls and grand theatres. It was rapidly transformed after World War II by the influx of troops returning and visiting from the nearby Garden Island naval base. It became known as Sydney's night entertainment and red-light district; however, many nightclubs, bars and adult entertainment venues closed due to the Sydney lockout laws.[2] Today, it is a mixed locality offering services such as a railway station, gyms, supermarkets and bakeries as well as entertainment venues including bars, restaurants, nightclubs, brothels and strip clubs." I'm ready to move to Sydney. I can't believe the quality of life here. I'm making a list of pros and cons for leaving Los Angeles and staying down under. It's my first time in Australia since June of 2014 and my first time in Sydney since June 1985. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Opera_House "The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in Sydney. Located on the banks of the Sydney Harbour, it is often regarded as one of the world's most famous and distinctive buildings and a masterpiece of 20th century architecture.[3][4] Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, but completed by an Australian architectural team headed by Peter Hall, the building was formally opened on 20 October 1973[5] after a gestation beginning with Utzon's 1957 selection as winner of an international design competition. The Government of New South Wales, led by the premier, Joseph Cahill, authorised work to begin in 1958 with Utzon directing construction. The government's decision to build Utzon's design is often overshadowed by circumstances that followed, including cost and scheduling overruns as well as the architect's ultimate resignation."

After following the inspiring Tara Coyote of Wind Horse Sanctuary and Cancer Warrioress for quite a few years, I finally worked up the courage to ask for an interview and was so glad I did! We had a wide-reaching conversation about her grief work, her incredible life journey with horses, cancer, and more, her brand new book (it's out now!) Grace, Grit and Gratitude, and her recent trip to visit the wild horses in Nevada. Enjoy!  Tara weaves together 30 years together of somatic experience with her love of horses. She was a horse-obsessed young girl being fortunate enough to spend summers with her cousins in New Hampshire who owned horses. Although she begged and pleaded with her parent she never got one of her own. Decades later while undergoing a particularly difficult life transition, she read 'The Tao of Equus' by Linda Kohanov which inspired her and helped her to remember her profound connection with horses. It is due to the healing experience she experienced with them which dramatically transformed and in a sense 'saved' her life.  In the period of two years Tara went from living in the suburbs, being married with a successful Pilates studio and then decided to give it all up to follow her heart's calling of helping people heal with horses. It was through this extreme leap of faith although pivotally challenging and terrifying that brought her back to life again. Now you can find her living on her ancestral land in Kaua'i, Hawaii which is Wind Horse Sanctuary with her two gorgeous horses feeling blessed to be practicing the work of Linda Kohanov. Tara is a Eponaquest™ equine facilitated learning  and Power of the Herd ™ instructor. Five years into developing Wind Horse Sanctuary in Nevada City, CA, a stressful event occurred which necessitated selling her business. Tara ended up moving back home to her father's ancestral land of Kaua'i, Hawaii in January, 2019. As she had four horses at the Sanctuary she ended up letting go of two of the herd and kept Blue, the paint horse and Comanche, the mustang. Transporting them across the Pacific Ocean, 2,500 miles away was quite the feat! Comanche, Blue, Xaria (super fluff ball Australian Shepherd wonder dog), Kismet the cat and Tara all live happily on The Garden Island now. The new version of WHS is much smaller than the Northern California version, but it has the unique magic, healing and charm of Hawaii. Tara specializes in the human/horse bond for healing grief, loss, difficult life transitions and facilitating help for care-takers through offering private sessions. Tara is highly experienced with helping clients with the grief process and is very familiar with issues around illness. In the last seven years she has experienced a vast amount of loss through the death of her two closest friends who died young from cancer. She has led hundreds of people in her ‘Grief Rituals with Horses' at her ranch and in rituals around the world. Tara has also been journeying with late stage breast cancer for almost five years. She has been publicly sharing her health journey through her blog page, YouTube channel and social media. She is very grateful to be alive after being recommended to Hospice two years ago. About 105 miles northwest of Oahu lies the fourth largest of the Hawaiian islands: Kauai. Nicknamed the "Garden Island" due to its abundance of lush natural beauty, Kauai is home to over 70,000 people. However, aside from its human inhabitants, Kauai is also home to a massive population of what has become one of the island's trademark features: feral chickens. Yes, as any anybody from Kauai could tell you, wild chickens are running around all over the place on the island. Why are there so many chickens on Kauai? Where did Kauai's wild chickens come from? Are Kauai's chickens any different from the typical barnyard varieties? How do the chickens affect the daily lives of people on Kauai? And what can genetic testing teach us about the origins of Kauai's feral chickens? We answer all these questions and more on this episode of Transmissions from Hawaii. In our live stream conversation with Kaaina Hull, we discuss Additional Dwelling Units (ADUs), Additional Rental Units (ARUs), and the planning department’s efforts to help create additional housing on Kauai. Like many areas throughout our nation, affordable housing is a challenge on the Garden Island. According to Housing Director Adam Roversi, Kauai needs 5,000 new homes to meet the needs of its current population. Through a variety of projects, programs, and developers, there are numerous projects currently on the books in the near term including: • Ele’ele: Lima Ola – 650 units –Hoping to break ground on infrastructure work in the summer of 2020 • Kapa’a: Hokua Place and Kealia Mauka – Developments that’d provide housing in accordance with Ordinance 860 –Developers are working through a process still years out if approved • Kilauea – 2 acres – still in an investigatory phase in partnership with HPHA • Koloa: Koa’e Makana has 133 units is currently taking applications • Lihue: The ‘Ohana Zone –22 units – Lihue – targeted demographic needing social services – anticipated completion by end of 2020 • Lihue: Pua Loke  – 53 units – Lihue- anticipated completion by end of 2020 • Waimea: Hua Kai –  67 units – under construction –primarily a Habitat for Humanity project assisted by County financing. Rentals and for purchase will be available. As you can see, the projects above constitute less than 1500 units so we have a lot of work to do to mitigate our housing challenges. Of all the angles on building affordable housing that I have seen in my fifteen years on the island, Habitat for Humanity has architected the most affordable way to build homes.  On Kauai’s residentially zoned parcels, the county allows for options to add additional housing units and in the interview, we discuss the process, review the density, and costs. The ARU is a relatively new ordinance, released in 2019,  designed to add small rental units on properties either attached or detached. You can view the ARU ordinance here. The graphic below provides a definition of the dwelling unit types. On A-zoned property (agricultural) ARUs are not currently permitted. Feel free to send me questions regarding these expansion options and my team and I will get the answers for you promptly.   Dwelling Unit Count by Parcel Sq. Ft. Threshold

What Key Issues Affect Tourism in Kauai?

Ron Margolis Real Estate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2019

Looking back on 2018, the largest issue of the year was the series of floods that damaged the North Shore, a small neighborhood in Koloa on the south side, and Anahola. Eight months later, those communities are still recovering from that incident. In fact, on January 3, the new mayor issued the sixth iteration of an emergency proclamation, which extends the flood-relief process. Part of that emergency rule prohibits the operation of transient vacation rentals on the north side of the island in the Lumahai, Wainiha, and Haena areas in particular. For the folks on the northern side of the island that depend on their vacation rental revenue, it’s a very challenging time. On the flip side, the new county government seems to be strongly focused on not only housing, but also on clamping down on the enforcement of illegal vacation rentals. Recently, they issued a $130,000 fine to an operator by the Wailua River who’d been operating an illegal vacation rental. That in mind, if you’re thinking about buying property on Kauai with the intent of renting it as a short-term vacation property, I strongly encourage you to make sure it’s a legal vacation rental. One in eight homes on Kauai is a vacation rental, and the government sees that as something that contributes to the high price of housing and destroys our communities. I don’t necessarily agree with that. However, the county strategy is to become much stricter on enforcement. In terms of affordable housing, one of the ideas the mayor mentioned in his radio interview was of leasing county or state land to large developers so that they can defer those costs and bring in housing that’s much more affordable for the median income of Kauai households. As we move further into 2019, we still have three relatively new projects Down the South Shore, the folks from Brookfield continue to build out PiliMai, which are some of the nicest, most modern condos that run along the Kiahuna Golf Course. The 2-bedroom units there are running in the $700s, and the 3-bedroom units run in the $800s.  On the east side, DR Horton continues to build out their project in Honolulu, which provides some of the most affordable housing on the island in terms of new construction. These large 3- and 4-bedroom homes are in the $500,000 range, though they’re on small lots.  On the North Shore, we have the North Shore Preserve, which is a swath of land owned by Jeff Stone and the Principal Corporation. These are spectacular lots with one-of-a-kind, mind-boggling views of Hanalei Bay and Valley High. They will be selling for between $5 million and $6 million. Overall, this last year was very successful for tourism. For those with vacation rentals, tourism revenue was up 9.2%, the highest level in 25 years on Kauai. However, this does create the problem of over-tourism; there are more tourists here than our infrastructure can support. “The new county government seems to be strongly focused on not only housing, but also on clamping down on the enforcement of illegal vacation rentals.” The focus for the future will be on improving our roads and wastewater systems so as to be able to support more visitors, or else to find a way to minimize the number of visitors coming to the island. An example of that point is the airlift onto the island. In fact, Southwest Airlines launched its first certification airlines earlier in February; as soon as they’re finished with that process, you’ll be able to get affordable flights from Southwest. For those of you with Southwest frequent flyer miles, it might be a great opportunity to get an inexpensive or free trip to the islands. The county doesn’t really have control over that, which is part of the drive behind the county’s push to improve infrastructure, roads, and so on. These are some of the key issues relevant to us on the Garden Island. Hopefully you get to visit us soon! If you have any questions about local issues or about buying or selling real estate, please reach out to us. Our marvelous team would love to be of service to you. Aloha!

They work with local chefs and farmers to really infuse the essence of community involvement, sustainable living, and locally-grown ingredients into the lives of these children.   Amanda’s vision is to impact future generations – starting with a single poi smoothie – and generate a powerful movement that will be shared through our keiki (or “the little ones”) of Hawaii.   “Believe in your own passion... how much energy you put into it is really what’s going to resonate the most!” –Amanda Smith   P.S. If you’re not familiar with Menehune – and I sure wasn’t – they are a mythological dwarf people from Hawaiian legend who are hidden and far away from human civilization, said to have built communities in the forests and valleys of Hawaii before the first Polynesian settlers arrived.
