5 shows. 3 podcasters. Untold levels of sidetracking about camels, growlers, sexist beers, and lots of sportsball. We did manage to talk about the Cincinnati media that came out last week. 2023 is looking to be an interesting year for legacy brewers in the U.S. We're seeing closures and contractions, and changes to beloved brands. Of course, the most noted right now is that New Belgium announced that it completely reformulated Fat Tire, turning it something that bears no resemblance to the amber ale that raised and delighted a generation. The changes, or “remastered” version of Boston Lager that Samuel Adams announced earlier this year are not as drastic, but are important and do have an impact on what is poured into the glass. It's impossible to imagine the modern American beer landscape without Boston Lager. When the Boston Beer company launched in 1984 Jim Koch and co-founder Rhonda Kallman were hand selling samples to accounts all over the city. The beer, based in part on a historic Koch family recipe and further developed by Joseph Owades, a brewing scientist who is credited as the inventor of light beer, was seen as an alternative to the macro offerings of the early 1980s. The beer won early accolades at the Great American Beer Festival in both the consumer preference polls and the formal judging. Top honors gave it bragging rights as “best beer in America,” something the brewery still uses in the beer's marketing nearly 40 years later. Boston Beer has grown. Brands like Angry Orchard Hard Cider, Twisted Tea, Truly Hard Seltzer, and Dogfish Head are now all part of the company. Samuel Adams has released hundreds of beers, some that landed well with consumers, and others that faded quickly. Boston Lager endured. On draft, in bottles and cans, and in every variety pack the brewery releases, the familiar lager is ever present. But as consumer preferences change, and technologies advance, and as brewers strive for a better version of their vision, the beer has evolved. Koch shares insight on how hop harvest helped evolve the beer, and how historic brewing processes are being used to help the lager taste smoother. If it's been a while since you last had a Boston Lager, now is a good time to give it a fresh try. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. It's time for the Super Bowl and if there's one thing we're big fans of, it's Super Bowl parties. Wings, pizza, plenty of beer, and chili cheese dip. Great news, this year you can have your dip in a bowl or a glass thanks to Hormel and Modist Brewing's Chili Cheese Brew. We tried it, and we can say it definitely delivers as promised. For better or worse. We've got our party plans for the weekend and we're pulling for the Eagles. Should be a close game either way, the Chiefs are hitting hard this year, too. We also sampled the old and the new Fat Tire side by side and share our thoughts. Whether or not it ends up a winner, the re-launch was definitely great marketing. A little more under the radar, Sam Adams is tweaking their Boston Lager recipe. In the news we talk about the Brewers Union of Georgia. It's a fiery battle right now between the much-loved brewery Creature Comforts and a group of employees who say they're playing dirty in an effort to discourage union support. To wrap up the show we sip on Bold Monk's Virtue of Patience Flander's Red (stellar) as we look at which states drink the most. We're tried our best but Georgia didn't even make the Top 10. We promise to do better next year. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We leave DC and travel to Montana, land of the Scotch Ale, but more importantly, home of Kate Bernot, the beer journalist and writer of Good Beer Hunting. Kate is in the leadership of the North American Guild of Beer Writers and is an award-winning author who writes for other publications such as Craft Beer & Brewing. Kate reveals why Montana's regional peculiarity is the Scotch Ale. Jake and Kate then take a birdseye view on beer in America and discuss some of the greatest beer comebacks and whether the Boston Lager will make a reprisal, the rise of hard seltzers, ready-to-drink cocktails, and canned wine, and how these trends may lead to buyer confusion. Then, Kate shares about the #MeToo reckoning in the beer industry and how beer journalists should approach it. Jake and Kate discuss why victims' stories were not shared through traditional media and what the role of beer journalists should be in this era. In other news, Brandy gives us the rundown on all the beer events and happenings in the DMV, and shares which breweries are currently hiring!Keep up to date with everything happening at DCBeer.com, @DCBeer on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Craft Brew News 01/31/20(Coutesy of Brewbound – www.brewbound.com)Anheuser-Busch Spends $24 Million on Bud Light Seltzer AdsSince launching Bud Light Hard Seltzer earlier this month, Anheuser-Busch InBev has spent $24.2 million on advertising for the new product line, according to TVRev.com.The majority of the investment — $23 million — was spent on spots during the NFL Playoffs, with $13.2 million going to spots during the NFC and AFC championship games last weekend.A-B’s investment in TV advertising shows the company’s intention to compete in the increasingly crowded hard seltzer category, which topped $1.5 billion in off-premise sales in 2019.City Brewery Plans $49 Million InvestmentCity Brewery is investing $49 million to expand its contract production facility in Memphis, Tennessee, according to the Daily Memphian. The company cited the growth of hard seltzers and other beer alternatives for seeking a 12-year tax abatement to purchase new equipment. The company said it plans to add 155 jobs over the next two years. At the end of 2019, City employed 516 workers, paying an average of $56,609 per worker, including overtime.City’s Memphis subsidiary is capable of producing 60 million cases annually. Both Boston Beer’s Truly and Mark Anthony Brands’ White Claw have contract produced their respective hard seltzer brands.Jim Koch on Finally Opening a Samuel Adams Taproom in Downtown BostonJim Koch is holding court on the lower level of Samuel Adams’ new taproom in downtown Boston.Koch, the founder of the Boston Beer Company, is his usual gregarious self and dressed in his typical every-day uniform: denim Samuel Adams button-down shirt and khakis. He’s loaded with quips, microphone in one hand, Boston Lager in the other. The 14,000 sq. ft. Samuel Adams Taproom, which opened this week, has been a couple of years in the offing, located about 20 yards from the statue of the beer brand’s namesake, a Founding Father and revolutionary. The location will offer pub food, including cheese boards, warm pretzels and flatbreads, as well as daily lunch offerings, such as a BLT, pastrami on rye and crispy chicken sandwich.Koch said the U.S. is closing in on 10,000 craft breweries. Those brewers, many of which run their own taprooms, have taken a chunk out of the Samuel Adams beer brand in recent years, as Koch has outlined on several of the publicly traded company’s earnings calls. In fact, Boston Beer — which also makes the Truly Hard Seltzer, Twisted Tea and Angry Orchard Cider products — produced more of its non-traditional beer offerings than beer in 2019.Of the 20 draft lines, 12 will be dedicated to beers brewed onsite, which currently include a “House” New England IPA and a “Moscow Mule” beer. The taproom, however, will serve Truly on tap in order to give drinkers a gluten-free option, Koch said.Michigan Bill Would Grant Self-Distribution Rights to More Small BreweriesA bill introduced in the Michigan Legislature earlier this month would allow breweries producing up to 2,000 barrels annually to self-distribute their products in the state.Currently, Michigan breweries producing up to 1,000 barrels can self-distribute. However, the cap would double if bipartisan House Bill passes. According to national trade group the Brewers Association, the majority of Michgian’s craft breweries produced fewer than 1,400 barrels in 2018, the last year in which data was available.Michigan Brewers Guild executive director Scott Graham told Brewbound the legislation would create “a little bit more breathing room” for many of the state’s 357 craft breweries and help newer breweries gain exposure at a time when the wholesaler tier is shrinking.Under the new bill, the 2,000 barrel threshold would apply to any sister brands a brewery offers in addition to its main product lineup. However, beer sold directly to consumers at a brewery’s taproom would not count against the 2,000-barrel cap.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Vienna-Style Lager (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)Named after the city in which it originated, a traditional Vienna Lager is brewed using a three step decoction boiling process. Decoction Mashing is a way to conduct multi-step mashes without adding additional water or applying heat to the Mash Tun. It involves removing about a third of the Mash to another pot where it is heated to conversion temperature, then boiled and returned to the Mash Tun. Many brewers believe that the boiling of the mash gives the beer a flavor profile that cannot be achieved otherwise.Munich, Pilsner, Vienna, and dextrin malts are used, as well wheat in some cases. Its color reliably falls between pale amber and medium amber—there should be a reddish hue to examples of this style. Noble hops are used subtly, with the resulting beer having a crisp quality, a toasty flavor and some residual caramel-like sweetness. Vienna Lager and German Märzen have much in common. Although Austrian in origin and rare these days, some classic examples come from Mexico, such as Dos Equis Amber, the result of late 19th century brewers immigrating from Austria. -Color – Copper to reddish-brown-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Characterized by malty aroma and light malt sweetness, which should have a lightly toasted malt character.-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.-Perceived Bitterness: Low to medium-low, clean and crisp.-Body: Medium-ABV: 3.8%-4.3%-Glassware: Pilsener Glass - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass-Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)(https://www.beeradvocate.com)Samuel Adams Boston Lager | Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)Brewed by: Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams) Massachusetts, United Statessamueladams.com Style: Vienna Lager Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00% Notes / Commercial Description: Our original beer is full-flavored with a balance of malty sweetness contrasted by hop spiciness and a smooth finish.Did you know that Jim Koch tastes each batch of Boston Lager to make sure that it reaches our high standards? Journey with Dom as he goes for a blast in the past! He certainly realized at the end of the Podcast this would be GREAT for a "Year in Review" but nonetheless, Dom goes back to his roots drinking the FIRST craft beer he had ever had the pleasure of having. You just might be surprised at his rating! Rob is GONE to Australia and Dom is now Kelly Rippa!! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 83 - Wahl To Wahl Terror So, we are aware that there is a very real hint of disappointment amongst you all, and believe us, you're not the only ones. Much to the chagrin of Mike, Roommate Jen, and Justin, this week marked the return of James to the show, which also means that the short lived, but highly praised Blockhead Podcast has come to an end. Sorry folks, but if you're looking for all things New Kids On The Block, you're going to have to look elsewhere. However, to ease you back into the normal format, and to ease Roommate Jen's pain a little bit, we decided to strike a balance by discussing a movie featuring Jen's favorite New Kid, Donnie Wahlberg, and for good measure, another movie starring his brother, Mark Wahlberg. So, grab a sixer of Sam Adam's Boston Lager and join us. MOVIES WE DISCUSSED FEAR (1996) DEAD SILENCE (2007) Follow us! In this episode we have a Sam Adams with Jim Koch, Founder and Brewer of the Boston Beer Company. It was a great honour to chat with one of craft brewing's pioneers about Samuel Adams' history in Ontario and the past, present and future of the Boston Beer Company.
I feel like the past 18 months have been a sort of reconciliation for craft beer drinkers and brewers, with a lot of folks focusing on beers that are highly drinkable, or sessionable, but still quite flavorful, exciting, and ultimately easy to find. There’s been a surge in the market of craft Lagers, Pilsners, Session IPAs and Sours, along with some renewed appreciation for beers like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. And in about a month we’ll be seeing an ode to Fat Tire in a collaboration 12-pack from New Belgium. So even as some craft brewers and their fans are finding more and more obscure, niche areas to explore, a lot of folks in craft beer are backing up a bit and asking themselves, "What’s good?" And, "Can we get more of that, please?" So with that kind of a swing back toward the middle, you’d expect a classic craft beer like Sam Adam’s Boston Lager to be in a bit of a resurgence. But as the nation’s largest craft brewer (right behind the recently re-defined-as-craft brewer, Yuengling), Boston Beer Company hasn’t been seeing the love—at least when you look at the numbers. The numbers for Sam Adams mimics the glacial decline of macro lagers more than it does the consistent double-digit growth of smaller craft brewers. Is it just that Boston Beer has gotten so big that it simply isn’t part of the consideration set anymore? Maybe. Is the profile of Boston Lager outdated? Maybe. But I’d like to offer a different view—one that sets aside this specific beer for a second, and takes a look at the entirely of the Boston Beer business. Boston Beer is so much more than Sam Adams. And its future seems geared toward diversity—not just a single beer they’ve been making since the 1980s. In the past few years, they’ve taken a run at IPA with Rebel, and it instantly became one of the biggest launches in craft beer history. They followed that with a spread of different IPAs all playing off that success. They’ve recently introduce a series of nitro beers that are sure to get the word "nitro" on the minds of consumers in a big way for the first time since Guinness. Boston Beer is also the owner of Angry Orchard, a cider company they started from scratch, and now owns about 60% of the cider market in just three years. And now makes more than a million barrels and growing. Even before that, they launched Twisted Tea, a brand that sells 640,000 barrels’ worth of booze a year. That’s nearly the volume of Lagunitas, and it’s still growing by double digits. Through their Coney Island Brand, part of their Alchemy & Science wing, they entered the FMB space with a line of hard sodas. They’ve also recently launched a line of alcoholic sparkling waters called Truly. All this to say, it’d be foolish to talk about Boston Beer as Sam Adams anymore. Boston Beer is a mature, well-diversified company that’s placing big bets on the next thing in alcohol that it feels it has the opportunity and expertise to pursue. Through that lens, they’re not the slow-moving, classic craft beer that we should all take pity on as it slowly loses share. Rather, they’re one of the leading companies in the U.S. when it comes to new alcoholic beverage entries. And by that account, they’re killing it. Now, that might take some of the sheen off an idol for you—especially if you were holding up Jim Koch as some sort of purist in craft beer. Although I think he’s also that. But the larger view of Koch should certainly take an honest look at the things this guy—and his company, of which he still holds all the controlling shares—puts in to the world on a regular basis. So yeah, when it comes to something like Boston Lager, this guy is as pure as they come. And when it comes to new opportunities, new ventures, new ideas—this guy is as cunning as it gets. And you don’t really have to worry about reconciling all that, of course, because Koch is nothing is not indifferent to other people’s opinions. And I kind of love him for it.
