On again, off again tariffs will impact beer pricesI don't know what to say about these tariffs. We record a show and talk about them going into effect, then they're paused again. We can't keep up. However, a lot of folks aren't buying the delays and making big changes to the way they do business. In the end, if they do go into effect, it's going to impact the price of your beer, and mostly likely everything else.Monster Beverage took a huge loss on their beer business. Good. They gobbled up some great breweries and did terrible things with them. Most of the people we cared about at these places have moved on. I don't wish ill will for any that remain, but Monster can go pound sand. We've always said, "It's OK, if it's an a 3-way." It's kind of our motto. Monks took note and there's a 3-way Trappist collaboration brew coming out. Hopefully we can get our hands on it.In other news... pairing beer and chocolate, Teamsters go after Boston Beer Co., and Isaac Newton's beer mug is on display in all its glory. Straight talk can be hard to come by. Speak with Taylor Foxman, however, and the veteran beverage executive and industry advisor will give you the unvarnished truth, or, as she does in this episode, declare something an outright falsehood. Taylor has over a decade of experience in beverage alcohol and beyond, having worked for globally recognized wine, beer and spirit companies including Pernod Ricard and Gruppo Campari. She's currently the founder and CEO of The Industry Collective, a leading beverage and cannabis advisory firm and is also a board member/board advisor with investment firms Alethia Ventures and MacArthur Capital. In this episode, we speak with Taylor for a conversation framed as a series of statements that she addresses as true or false, including those about the value of great taste, the impact of bad PR, the sober-curious movement, the future of cannabis beverages and Gen Z consumers' relationship with alcoholic drinks. Show notes: 0:35: Taylor Foxman, Founder & CEO The Industry Collective – Taylor chats with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about her home office in New York before discussing her career experience and work with fast-growing beverage companies. Taylor then shares her take on a range of statements related to beverage brands and CPG in general, beginning each response with true or false. Her replies incorporate her perspective on public relations, personal investment strategy (and how it relates to her fridge game), why she's bullish on moderation, a certain reality TV show, the power of one's network in their ability to raise money and whether great brands always have a great founder story. Brands in this episode: Ponyboy Slings, Boston Beer Co., Lyre's, Athletic Brewing Co., Poppi, Dio Cocktails

Instead of doing some boring old new year's resolution show we wanted to spice it up a bit. We all came with things we wanted to see more of (or new things we wanted to see) in the craft brewing and beverage world. And some things that kind of grinds our gears that we want to see go away in 2022. Like many shows we started off strong and then got side tracked talking about Batman. So if you like beers, seltzers, ciders, RTDs, Batman AND us ranting about stuff you've come to the right place. “Still don't know what I was waitin' for, and my time was runnin' wild. A million dead end streets. And every time I thought I'd got it made, It seemed the taste was not so sweet” – Changes / David Bowie An appropriate line for this show from one of my favorite artists, Ziggy Stardust A.K.A. David Bowie. Welcome to Episode 80 – What Will Be - 2022 Beer Trends, where we talk about and forecast he year ahead in the craft beer world. We also have one of our favorite guests sitting in with us, Cory Kuczynsk, to help us kick off a new year of podcasts! So, what do you, our beloved listeners, think will be the biggest beer trends in 2022? We found some obvious predictions and some surprising ones. Cleaner and simpler beer should one popular thread that Wii be riding the coat tails of hard seltzers, low alcohol and lager beers. We may have seen the run of hazy IPAs begin to fizzle and the demand for sour beers looks to be coming back for another gig. For some of the surprising trends we found… Smoothie and rosé beers should have a bigger presence along with fresh hop beers. Craft malts or Branded malt beverages get a nod as craft brewers are trying to separate themselves from the brands acquired and made by the mega breweries. The smaller breweries are also trending to what is known as ‘no style' beers as they try to make their own mark among the mega brewery dominance. The resurrection of the taproom concept is a trend that we find appealing. There is nothing better than sipping some fine fresh local beer in a beer garden on a nice day or inside the taproom on a cold winter night. Hell anytime is a good time to be drinking good beer, especially local…or home brew…HAH! And speaking of sipping some fine beer we had the following beers to sample. From one of our sponsors Pig Minds Brewing we had the always delicious IPA, Sweep the Leg. As for home brews Kent brought in a Kölsch style that was a good representation. Sears brought a holiday spice beer that is a clone of Boston Beer Co Old Fezziwig Ale a style he loved during the holidays but is now difficult to find so he took a stab at it. Sears also brought a Belgian Wit that is infused with THC. A tasty beer with an additional ‘kick' inspired by our Episode 77 podcast with Dr Keith Villa of CERIA Brewing. Speaking of home brews if you want to have the guys sample your beer on the show give us a shout either via e-mail, our web site or Facebook. We would love the opportunity and get ya to call in and share with us, we promise we will be nice. As always we are thankful for our sponsors who we are glad to see hanging tough in these trying times of ever changing ‘rules'. Keep up the good work! If you are looking for a great craft beer and some of the best vegan food in the state line? Try Pig Minds Brewing and check out the new addition, looks awesome guys! Seeking a hard-to-find commercial craft beer, wine or spirits to take home or as a gift? Stop in to Artale & Co, Anthony and Aaron have plenty of great ideas. When you are ready to start a new indoor gardening project stop in to 815 Gardens, Bob will be happy to help. Tell them that HomeBrew Rockstars sent ya. In this highlight episode culled from interviews with six of the leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs who joined us on the podcast during the second half of 2019, we examine the role that relationships play in the development of great businesses. Our guests include “The Beverage Whisperer” Ken Sadowsky, Whole30 founder and CEO Melissa Hartwig Urban, Grillo’s Pickles founder and CEO Travis Grillo, Veggie Grill co-founder T.K. Pillan, Dogfish Head Brewery founder Sam Calagione and Bev founder and CEO Alix Peabody. Show notes: 1:50: Ken Sadowsky, The Beverage Whisperer -- We kick off the show with Ken Sadowsky, who is affectionately known as “The Beverage Whisperer.” A longtime investor and advisor to many high-profile and category leading brands, including Vitaminwater, Vita Coco, Bai, Hint and Califia Farms, Ken is one of the industry’s best known and most respected insiders. In the following clip, pulled from our interview with Sadowsky in Ep. 174, he explained how he assesses opportunities to align with and invest in early stage brands, how he advises entrepreneurs on packaging and design, and why he warns that indecisiveness can lead to big mistakes. 10:11: Melissa Hartwig Urban, Co-Founder/CEO, Whole30 -- Next up is Melissa Hartwig Urban, the co-founder and CEO of popular 30-day lifestyle program Whole30. Since its launch in 2009, Whole30 has become a cultural phenomenon that has attracted millions of followers, many of whom adhere to its paleo-centric guidelines even after they complete the program. In this clip, pulled from our interview in Ep. 184, Urban explained why most of her work time is spent direct messaging with members of the Whole30 community, the importance of accessibility, and how she’s learned that “you can’t let perfect be the enemy of good.” 20:18: Interview: Travis Grillo, Founder/CEO, Grillo’s Pickles -- We continue with Travis Grillo, the founder and CEO of premium pickle brand Grillo’s. From his humble beginnings selling pickles out of a small food cart, Grillo’s has grown into a nationally distributed brand carried at several major chains and one that generates tens of millions of dollars in sales annually. In a clip from our wide-ranging interview with Grillo, which we featured in Ep. 175, he spoke about why he positioned Grillo’s as a lifestyle brand, how he considers new hires and investment and why he’s just as likely to take advice from a homeless person as he would from a billionaire. 30:42: Interview: T.K. Pillan, Co-Founder, Veggie Grill/PowerPlant Ventures -- We keep things going with T.K. Pillan, the chairman and co-founder of fast-casual restaurant chain Veggie Grill and investment firm PowerPlant Ventures. Thirteen years since opening its first location, Veggie Grill now has 37 stores and is planning to operate 50 locations by next year. In the following clip, from our interview with Pillan in Ep. 188, he discussed the common theme in all of his businesses, why it’s critical for co-founders to have a clear understanding of roles and complementary skill sets, why he described growth plans as “a double-edged sword” and what it means to be “a good investor.” 41:41: Sam Calagione, Founder, Dogfish Head Brewery -- Next we have some words of wisdom from Sam Calagione, the founder of iconic craft beer brand Dogfish Head. We spoke with Calagione in Ep. 189 and in the following clip, he reflected on his experience building Dogfish Head, which in May merged with Samuel Adams maker The Boston Beer Co. in a deal valued at $300 million. He also discussed why “goodness” is a pillar of Dogfish Head’s business philosophy, why he refers to employees as “co-workers” and why he urges entrepreneurs to figure out how “small their businesses can possibly be.” 47:44: Alix Peabody, Founder/CEO, Bev -- Last, but not least, we have Alix Peabody, the founder of Bev, a wellness-focused canned wine brand that aims to change the narrative around how women are projected and perceived by the alcohol industry and redefine traditional ways of doing business in a space long dominated by men. In this clip pulled from Ep. 191, Peabody explained why, despite very challenging times, she never thought to quit, how she made inroads to tech investors and how she attempts to redefine “old school” ways of doing business. Brands in this episode: Whole30, Grillo’s, Veggie Grill, Dogfish Head, Bev
Having founded the much admired and influential Dogfish Head Brewery nearly 25 years ago, Sam Calagione is known among his colleagues as one of the godfathers of craft beer. He’s also a highly respected businessman who has authored several best-selling books about entrepreneurship, including “Brewing Up A Business” and “Off-Centered Leadership.” In an interview included in this episode, Calagione reflected on his experience building Dogfish Head, which in May merged with Samuel Adams maker The Boston Beer Co. in a deal valued at $300 million. As part of our conversation, he spoke about the history of Dogfish Head, how he identified white space for the “off-centered” beer brand and what the threat of bankruptcy taught him about being prepared for down times. He also explained why the company eschews traditional advertising in favor of a dialogue-based marketing approach, why he urges entrepreneurs to write business plans about how “small their businesses can possibly be” and whether wealth has changed his perspective on life. This episode is presented by Flavorman, the beverage architects. Show notes: 2:24: Interview: Sam Calagione, Founder, Dogfish Head Brewery -- Calagione sat down with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif for an expansive conversation about his life and career, including his rebellious youth and how he got his feet wet in the beer business. He also explained why he’s a staunch advocate for the word “craft,” why “goodness” is a pillar of Dogfish Head’s business philosophy, why he refers to employees as “co-workers” and how personal interaction with consumers is key to to its marketing strategy. Palmetto Brewing is South Carolina's oldest brewery The history of Palmetto Brewing dates back to the end of Prohibition. In its current life, Palmetto is 26-years old, making it South Carolina's oldest operating brewery. Billy Pyatt, founder of Asheville's Catawba Brewing purchased Palmetto in 2017. They've got a new look and some new beers, but still hold on to their traditions. Pyatt joined us from his sound-proof recording studio (his car) while taking a break from building out a new beer cooler. We talk about the recent update to Palmetto's branding, their new beers, the South Carolina beer scene, and what else we should do for a weekend in Charleston. Palmetto may have a few years on Catawba but the North Carolina brewery will celebrate their 20th anniversary this July. As part of the celebration, they'll launch three new beers. We tried to get Pyatt to spill the beans on exactly what those would be, but he said he has to keep that under wraps for now. While sipping some of their coffee blonde ale (Evening Joe) Brian had to get in some coffee chat and we find out about Catawba's best-selling beer. Craft Beer News Boston Beer Co. merges with Dogfish Head | The big story this week was the merger of Boston Beer Co., maker of Sam Adams, and Dogfish Head. Since Pyatt had experience merging two breweries we took the opportunity to get his opinion on the pros and cons of this massive merger. Meanwhile, the company’s two flagship brands — Bud Light and Budweiser — continue to lose volume although both still rank among the top five Brewery Openings on the Rise in Major U.S. Population Centers, BA ReportsU.S. cities with populations in excess of 5 million have seen the most percentage growth of brewery openings in the past five years, according to Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson. In an email to Brewbound, Watson explained that the growth in the number of breweries in the U.S.’s largest cities is partially due to those locations playing “catch-up” with the rest of the country.Watson’s data — including an interactive map — revealed that eight metro areas are now home to more than 100 breweries.Leading the way is Chicago, with 167 breweries. Interviewed Chet Brett (Brand Manager) from Tribes Brewing Co. in Mokena, IL - Chicago area– they are doing well and selling a lot of beer.Trailing Chicago are long-time beer meccas and other major population centers, including Denver (158), Seattle (153), San Diego (150), Los Angeles (146), New York (141), Portland, Oregon (139), and Philadelphia (113).The last time Watson charted the data — in 2013 — Seattle’s 87 breweries were the most in the nation. Chicago ranked fifth that year with 62 breweries, trailing Portland, Oregon (77), San Diego (76) and Denver (63).Rankings are fleeting, however, as more breweries open their doors and shutter. According to the BA, 7,000 breweries were in operation as of the end of October, with potentially as many as 1,000 openings in 2018. Meanwhile, Watson told Brewbound earlier this year that he anticipates as many as 300 brewery closures by the end of 2018, as the gap between openings and closings begins to converge.News courtesy of Brewbound (https://www.brewbound.com/)Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. Was Massachusetts discovered because the Pilgrims ran out of beer? How has the craft beer landscape changed since Sam Adams entered the market in 1984? Jim Koch, founder and Chairman of Boston Beer joins Roger and Larry in studio for an informative and often humorous look at the past, present and future of the Sam Adams brand. Jim discusses his personal inspiration, the early days of brewing and how a business with one-percent market share stays relevant in the increasingly competitive micro-brew industry.

A co-founder of Boston Beer Co., the maker of Samuel Adams, Rhonda Kallman has seen her share of success. Yet while she’s been to the top of the mountain, she’s also seen its nadir. Despite the ups and downs of her nearly three decades in the beverage business, she’ll tell you that there’s been one constant: there’s no substitute for entrepreneurship. Kallman‘s latest project, Boston Harbor Distillery, extends a career that began in 1984 when she partnered with Jim Koch to create the now iconic Samuel Adams brand. Her path from Sam to spirits included both remarkable success and a decade of adversity, forcing her to overcome several personal struggles and the failure of a new brewing venture. In an interview recorded at her distillery in Dorchester, Mass., Kallman spoke about the defining moments of her journey, her methods for identifying disruptive concepts, why authenticity is the key to marketing innovation and the words that lifted her during the most challenging point of her career. Also included in this episode: a conversation with Greg Steltenpohl, the founder and CEO of plant-based beverage company Califia Farms. Known as one of the foremost innovators in the beverage industry, Steltenpohl, who is also the founder of super-premium juice brand Odwalla, discussed the development and impact of business habits that he’s adopted during his nearly four decades in business. This episode is presented by Watermelon Road. Show notes: 2:51: Incubate, Communicate, Masticate -- The hosts discussed highlights and notable exhibits at the 2018 Summer Fancy Food Show, including the event’s “Incubator Village,” which featured 11 incubators from across the U.S., among them the Chobani Incubator, The Hatchery, and CommonWealth Kitchen. They also spotlight Alpha Food Labs’ “The Future Market” which showcased innovative brands Yappah and Ocean Hugger, and chatted about a few interesting products sampled at the show, including those from Peekaboo Ice Cream, Pan’s Mushroom Jerky, Harney & Sons Cold Brew Nitro Tea, Tiny Hero Foods, and GT’s Kombucha. 12:14: Rhonda Kallman, Co-Founder, Boston Beer Co./Founder, Boston Harbor Distillery -- Kallman shared stories about the early days of Samuel Adams and how the brand focused on an authentic message to drive trial and achieve traction; how she navigated a challenging and ultimately unsuccessful new venture in beer; why she saw an opportunity to innovate in the spirits business; and why it’s critical for brands in emerging categories to work together. 36:33: Greg Steltenpohl, Founder/CEO, Califia Farms -- Recorded at the 2018 Summer Fancy Food Show, Steltenpohl offered his take on important business habits and practices, including why listening is essential for successful leaders; how Califia uses “huddles” to create spaces for dialogue; how best to capture innovative ideas; and how to identify and avoid ruts. Brands in this episode: Yappah, Ocean Hugger, Peekaboo Ice Cream, Pan’s Mushroom Jerky, Harney & Sons, Tiny Hero, GT’s Kombucha, Samuel Adams, Boston Harbor Distillery, Odwalla, Califia Farms
Hardywood Park is determined to 'Brew With Purpose' Hardywood Park Craft Brewery's founders Eric McKay and Patrick Murtaugh have known each other most of their lives. After sampling some homebrew on a farm in Australia the stage was set. After many years working in the craft beer industry, they were destined to open their own brewery. McKay became Richmond, Virginia's first Certified Cicerone and while attending brewing school Murtaugh found out his family's brewing history goes back several generations. From the time they opened in 2011, Hardywood Park has strived to 'Brew With Purpose.' They implement that mantra in their recipes, employee and customer relations, brewing with local ingredients, and minimizing their impact on the environment. The brewery has grown to include three locations and expanded distribution offering a huge variety of styles and variants. Their sought-after Gingerbread Stout taught them about dealing with hordes of consumers and is still anticipated each year. McKay and Murtaugh visited the Beer Guys Radio studios on their recent Atlanta market launch. We sampled several of their beers while talking about their history, brewery growth, keeping up with demand, future expansion plans, brewing for Broadway, Brian shares a terrible collaboration suggestion, and we invent the Candall™. In the news, Brian gives us the scoop on ABInBev dirty tactics, NOFX acting foolish and getting the boot from beer sponsors, and Boston Beer Co.'s big fines in New York. Angry Orchard is the #1 cider brand in the US and there is a very good reason why it holds this coveted place. Undoubtedly, being a subsidiary of Boston Beer Company means connections to Jim Koch’s brewery empire a.k.a. Samuel Adams Boston Lager. But to think that Angry Orchard is merely tapping into the US cider mania would be short sighted. Boston Beer Co. has been researching cider since the early 2000s with the help of Alan Tringham, a retired cidermaker from the European brand known as Bulmers. I had the opportunity to meet Grant Wood from Boston Beer Co. who was working with Tringham at the time to “create the perfect cider for the American public”. They both stopped by my cidermaking workshop at CiderDays back in 2004. Hoo wee! Imagine presenting cidermaking to the likes of the now late Alan Tringham. Anyhoo…the first cider brand for Boston Beer Co. was known as Hard Core. That brand was shelved, and a few moments later we were seeing Angry Orchard commercials during the Super Bowl! Bingo! The new brand was taking hold with its flagship cider Crisp Apple. Take note cidermaker wannabees….to think that a brand such as Angry Orchard would sit on it laurels with what many would consider an introductory cider made to entice a public that is still wrangling with cider is not time well spent. Angry Orchard led by newly minted Head Cidermaker Ryan Burk and Assistant Cidermaker Anna Hasan is and will continue to move mountains in Ciderville! Listen to this episode and hear Ryan’s story and what we can all expect from Angry Orchard. He and Anna have already started pushing the envelope with the likes of Stone Dry (5.5%) a new cider now available in six packs. You have to visit the Walden location to taste select drafts that may or may not make it into the mass market. What to expect at the Tasting Room? A very large, yet inviting room with windows that overlook the orchard. If the weather is right, there is outdoor seating and a gas lit fire pit. Each visitor of drinking age, receives one token that can be used for (3) complimentary samples in the tasting room. Cider styles available include the flagship cider, Crisp Apple (5%) and several other core offerings, as well as ciders exclusive to the tasting room. Such as the house cider – Farm Cider – an unfiltered cider made with apples from the orchard’s 2014 harvest. Listen to what Angry Orchard is looking for the future. Cidermaking trends Cider Act How are they playing with the Cider House Series? What will they do with their Ice Cider this coming winter?
