His curiosity in how hip-hop found it's roots led him to discover the original Jazz records that these producers were sampling from. His discovery of old jazz evolved into Alfa wanting to self-teach himself piano at the age of 17, so that he could bring the chords and harmonies to life in his own compositions. Alfa has gone on to release multiple albums and EP's, often featuring conversations with his brothers and sisters on themes of mental health and self-image. As usual, there is much more to know. Classical and jazz singer shares the ups and downs of life on the road and how to make money in between. Heather Cairncross, is of course, also lucky enough to be Nicola's sister Heather's uniquely versatile voice has allowed her to sing successfully at the highest level internationally in many musical genres. Her career has included concert performances at Carnegie Hall with Stephane Grappelli, operas at La Scala, Milan, and solo engagements with the world's leading ensembles including the Chicago, Boston and London Symphony Orchestras. A specialist in both contemporary and baroque music, Heather sings with Steve Reich and Musicians as well as being a member of, and soloist for Sir John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir (which Gramophone Magazine voted Best Choir in the World in 2010). She is equally in demand in the recording studio. In addition to the fifteen albums she recorded as a member of a cappella group The Swingle Singers, she has sung for artists such as Tony Bennett, Björk, Mike Oldfield and Michael Jackson. She has also recorded many film scores including Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars and La Vie en Rose (BAFTA 2008 winner). Heather premiered David Newton's Jazz Song Cycle Portrait of a Woman in 2009 and they have enjoyed collaborating ever since. He has been voted Best Pianist by the British Jazz awards eleven times. Together, they recorded a CD called At Last which Walter Love on BBC Radio Ulster's Jazz Club described as “a remarkable example of empathy and understanding…as near to perfect as you're likely to get.” At the time of this recording, Heather was just back from a tour of China and had a busy year which included appearances at the Lincoln Centre as a soloist with the NY Philharmonic and at the Glastonbury Festival with Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead. Just Jazz Magazine wrote of her CD “I am not overstating it to suggest this recording is absolutely exceptional…..it is as good as any vocal album I have ever heard for a very long time. Just superb!” And All About Jazz said “When Cairncross sings……she makes every word count. Her voice, technically excellent and emotionally engaging, gives each lyric a very personal perspective, as if these are her stories, not just her interpretation of others' tales. It's the mark of a great jazz vocalist.” Chosen from over a thousand applicants to attend a special day at BBC centre to encourage more women into local radio presenting, Heather has just got a date for her first stint on Radio Sussex – watch this space… Listen To Heather Connect with Heather HeatherCairncross.com Facebook Twitter Please listen to the podcast to hear Heather's full mind, marketing and money tips for entrepreneurs. British singer-songwriter Julia Fordham continues to enchant audiences around the world with her extraordinary vocal range and heartfelt songs. From 1988’s Happy Ever After — her first release and an international hit —  and throughout all 15 albums, her unique voice and exquisitely crafted compositions strike an everlasting chord.A luscious contralto that she wields with an almost operatic command, it is one of the most strikingly beautiful new voices to be heard in pop. – New York TimesAt 14, Julia started writing songs and performing at local folk clubs. Soon after, she was invited to be a guest singer with the UK’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra, which sparked a lifelong love of the genre. On her highly acclaimed second album, Porcelain, two original jazz songs “For You, Only For You” and “China Blue” were featured along with the hits “Manhattan Skyline” and “Lock and Key.”In 1992, “Love Moves” (from her third album Swept), was chosen as the theme song for The Butcher’s Wife, starring Demi Moore, and became a big hit in the UK, US, and the Philippines.Four of Julia’s albums have been produced by Grammy winner Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Madeleine Peyroux). Her 2005 live CD (That’s Life) and DVD (That’s Live), features Klein as producer and bass player as part of an all-star band including the Academy Award-winning trumpet player/composer, Mark Isham. On the soulful song (from the album of the same name) “Concrete Love,” Julia performs a stunning duet with another Grammy winner, India.Arie.After 2004’s devastating tsunami struck in Asia, Julia became intimately involved in a charity project to help rebuild a school in India, by donating the proceeds from a “Happy Ever After” remix. It featured a children’s choir from England. This beautiful production brought Julia back full circle to the place where she first started writing and performing as a teenager. In 2007, Julia’s Baby Love EP, a set of unconditional love songs dedicated to her daughter, Marley Rose, was released.Julia’s 10th album, China Blue, is a collection of original jazz compositions, except for one song: a reinterpretation of Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgetting” with Michael himself contributing his amazing vocals.Under The Rainbow, is a piano/voice album featuring all her hits and fan favorites, plus a new song: “Skipping Under The Rainbow.”Mixed, Shaken & Stirred is Julia’s latest project. Released on September 30, this unique album features some of the songs from Julia’s much loved first album, all of which have been remixed, reworked and reconstructed by some of today’s leading and cutting edge producers of dance and electronic music.Julia’s next album, Live & Untouched, is an eclectic mix of fan faves that were recorded at recent shows. The first single “Ingrid & Humphrey” was the instant gratification track when the album was purchased as a pre-order on November 18. Live & Untouched was released on November 25.Both albums are available worldwide in both physical and digital formats, as well as, streaming services.Produced and arranged by Julia’s long-time collaborator, pianist and musician extraordinaire, Grant Mitchell, The Language of Love, is a jazz album featuring covers of songs that were also hits on the Japanese charts. Supported by an outstanding ensemble of leading Los Angeles musicians and Latin jazz aficionados, this seductive collection includes swing, bossa nova and traditional trio interpretations of familiar chart-toppers.The Language of Love also debuts two original songs written by Julia, “Like You Used To Do” and “The Morning After (The Night With You),” and includes a new World Music-flavored rendition of “Happy Ever After.” The original version was a #1 hit in Japan. On April 14, Red River Entertainment will release The Language of Love on all formats. Humphrey Lyttelton's eight-piece band featured, aside from himself on the trumpet and clarinet: Ray Wordsworth  on the trombone; Jimmy Hastings on the alto sax, clarinet and flute; Jo Fooks on the tenor saxophone and flute; Rob Fowler on the tenor sax, baritone sax and clarinet; Ted Beament on the piano; John Rees-Jones on the double bass and Adrian Macintosh on the drums. The band maintained a busy schedule, frequently performing sold-out shows across the country. Performances occasionally included a guest singer, or a collaboration with another band. During the 1990s the band toured with Helen Shapiro in a series of Humph and Helen concerts. They also featured in several Giants of British Jazz tours with Acker Bilk and George Melly and John Chilton's Feetwarmers.Lyttelton had a long established professional relationship with UK singer Elkie Brooks. After working together in the early 1960s they rekindled their working partnership in early 2000 with a series of sold out and well received concert performances. They released the critically acclaimed album Trouble in Mind in 2003 and continued to perform occasional concerts in support of this work.
