2025 re-run bonus notes:   This episode is the third in a trilogy of music blocks (parts 1 and 2 were our January and February reruns). Long time listeners may already know what this trilogy is all about, but for those who don't and have been following the reruns, the introduction to this episode finally explains what the trilogy is all about.   So, the fun [for me] question: of the three music blocks in the trilogy, which did you like best (and why), which did you like least (and why), and do you or do you not think I made the right decision bumping "music block A" for "music block B" in C1E41? Let me know at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or by any social media outlet on which we exist. I will genuinely be curious to know what you think. Even to this day in 2025, I *STILL* don't know what to think, personally!   DISCLAIMER: the production value was worse in 2022 when the intro and outro were produced, and substantially worse in 2018 when the music block was produced. So if this is your first time hearing Nerd Noise Radio, please keep in mind that our production values have much improved in the time since.   ----------------------------- Original (2022) Show Notes -----------------------------   Today's broadcast is  C1E69 for Mishmash Monday, November 7th, 2022. Music Block produced in GarageBand in macOS 10/19/2018.       IMPORTANT NOTE: The tools and techniques I used back in 2018 in producing the music block were NOT up to my current standards – including featuring less sophisticated fades, more imprecise volume level balancing, less developed track run-order sorting, and even my having used MP3s rather than WAVs in the source production, resulting in a lower-fidelity final product, and further limiting my ability to touch it up after the fact. As such, the production value of this episode will NOT be to par with our current "fresh episodes". But production values aside, the quality of the CONTENT itself, otherwise, I feel, is excellent, and well worth digging up to share with you.....I hope that you'll agree! :-)     You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    Our YouTube Channel, for the time being is in dormancy, but will be returning with content, hopefully, in 2022. We're starting to stock a lot of chips that can do digital I2S out, which makes for great-quality audio playback. That's great when you have enough processing power to decode WAVs or MP3s in real-time. However, we could really use some better DACs in the shop. We like the UDA1334A (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3678), but that's technically discontinued - it's great because it doesn't require an MCLK that some boards like the Raspberry Pi don't have and doesn't need I2C configuration either. The PCM510x is a good family, too; it ranges from the inexpensive PCM5100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/z50cnp0h) to the PCM5102 (https://www.digikey.com/short/80z2nh3h) which has high quality output at a higher cost. This breakout could use any of the family chips & gives you all the GPIO needed with a 3.5mm headphone jack for line-level output. We're testing it out with some cool tunes from the adafruit soundcloud, check it out! (https://soundcloud.com/adafruit). Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we’re talking about the difference between WAV and MP3 files. The major difference between WAVs and MP3s are size and quality. WAV files contain more detail, but are also much bigger. Think of a WAV file as an original painting, and MP3 files as prints of that painting. Podcast episodes are almost always released in MP3 form because it has a good file size to quality ratio. MP3s have their own size and quality scale too. They’re called bitrates, and we’re going to talk about them on the next episode. WAVs are known as a “lossless” format because they contain the full detail of the original recording. But only a handful of people in the world could listen to spoken-word content both in its WAV form, and on a good MP3 version of it, and be able to tell the difference. MP3s keep storage and costs down for you and your listeners. And you won’t be shocked to learn that Alitu exports your episodes in MP3 form for you, automatically. Dr. LaTasha Russell Harris is a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan. She received her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in Berkeley, California, twelve years after graduating from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Immediately after receiving her Bachelor's degree in Spanish and Pre-medicine, Dr. Tasha relocated to Houston, Texas where she was a 5th grade Math teacher and 7th grade Spanish teacher at the original KIPP Academy. Then, ironically at the age of 24 years old, she became an elementary school principal. However, soon after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Dr. Tasha was asked to contract for FEMA on the disaster relief team and four years later, in 2009, she found herself on the West Coast in graduate school. Today, she is the President of The Association of Black Psychologists, South Florida Chapter. She has provided therapeutic sessions in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Virginia, Washington D.C., Singapore, Japan and in South Florida where she now resides. She has worked in hospitals, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities, battered women's shelters, lock-down detention centers, and community mental health agencies. She has proven herself to work effectively with individuals that people judge, such as prostitutes, pastors, and the police. She was also an Adjunct Professor at the South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary, where she taught clergymen and women about Mental Health First Aid. As a Social Scientist, several corporations have also endorsed her as a Racial Justice Consultant because she is able to create teachable moments with anyone who is hungry to learn and ready to fumble through their own illiteracy. In her Private Practice, Dr. Tasha is a Relationship Coach for professional athletes and their significant others. She is also a recent author of a Couples Workbook, entitled “It Ain't the Dishes.” If you would like to see her in action, Dr. Tasha has a Live Talk Show with a Stand-up Comedian. This is the only talk show where the guests are selected right out of the audience. In addition, Dr. Tasha has created a Speed Dating Events to help progressive singles date with more integrity and authenticity. Dr. Tasha used to have a live radio show every Saturday at midnight on WAVS 1170 am and has appeared monthly with a panel of experts on Hot Talk with Jill Tracey on Miami's Hottest Radio Station, Hot 105 FM. With her sharp shooting style and her voice of accountability, Dr. Tasha has helped to dispel the myths of talking to a professional about what goes on behind closed doors. The Miami Herald recognized her as one of the Top 40 Leaders under 40 in 2018. As seen on CBS4 Miami, Dr. Tasha specializes in getting to the core of an issue quickly, which she calls “Drive-by Therapy.” You can reach her on social media @doctoratasha or on her website: drivebytherapy.org --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dreamsbyanymeans/message

Welcome to the Monthly Music Challenge with @CosmicBos podcast This is the introduction episode, laying out how it's going to go down for the rest of the year. Let Nick and Andy (Cosmic Bos) be your guides through the wonderful world of music creation, working with the sublime musicians of Music Weeklies @MusicWeeklies CB will be making a new song every week in line with their rules, but on the side CB will be offering up the chance for music made within the month (leaning heavily on the first hashtag of each month) to be played on this podcast, and get comments from Nick and Andy. Podcast play (PP) will not be reserved exclusively for the first hashtag (which btw is #NewBeginnings), and any of Music Weeklies hashtags generated in the given month are viable for PP, please send your mp3's (not WAVs, our inbox will die) to cosmicbos@gmail.com with the hashtag in the subject line, and a bit of info about yourself so we can give you the promo in the podcast that you deserve. We won't be playing any material that doesn't meet the Music Weeklies guidelines or our Monthly Music Challenge ones either, to get airplay and PP for such songs you should go check out the New Music Saturdays guys (they have a podcast of their show too, check it out). So, get to work lovely musicians, songwriters, audio creatives  You have until the 3rd of Feb (2023) to submit for the January hashtags, of which the first one (and the one you can have a month to work on) is #NewBeginnings  Check back on Twitter on the 13th, 20th and 27th of Jan to find out the other three hashtags that we will accept PP on. This should be fun, we can't wait to hear from you Any questions please come find us on Twitter @CosmicBos where we will attempt to answer them (SPOILER ALERT! we might not be able to) Peace and infinite love Cosmic Bos https://linktr.ee/cosmicbos Check out our band camp for musical purchases https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/virtual-normality-2 Songs found on this introduction episode are all by Cosmic Bos The Drunky Song (for #Drunk) You Find Out When You Die (for #Afterlife) Morning Coffee acoustic (for #MorningCoffee) Morning Coffee Full Blend version (from Virtual Normality 2) Links for all of these can be found on our YouTube page Cosmic Bos YouTube Channel Please like, share and subscribe, we love you

My guest in this episode is renowned UK illustrator Ian Wright. His work as a commercial illustrator has spanned four decades, starting with his illustrative cover of The Undertones' Teenage Kicks 7” single in the late 1970s, progressing with his illustrative artwork in The Face magazine in their 1980s heyday and his famous weekly black and white portraits for the New Musical Express (NME).Ian's subsequent work has involved collaboration with many famous names and brands including Issy Miyake, Givenchy and portraits of Sun Ra, Motorhead and Grandmaster Flash. In a delightfully wide-ranging chat, in both musical choices and subject matter, amongst other things we talk about: ·        Ian's love of Radio, initially inspired by his dad ‘streaming' Radio Luxembourg into his bedroom on a Friday night ·        The life-changing impact of Hendrix's appearance on the Happening for Lulu         show in January 1969 ·        The influence of Bob Harris and John Peel·        Developing a passion for Reggae in the 70's that continues to this day ·        What is was like orking on NME & The Face in the 80's ·        Pete Townsend making him a coffee (Ian doesn't drink coffee) ·        Moving to New York in the 00's & working to a soundtrack of the (then unreleased) Beatles Remasters ·        Coming full circle and in March last year getting his own Radio show on Charlie Bones Do!! You!! Radio (https://doyouworld/) Ian's song choices are appropriately wide ranging and were: 50's      Summertime                             Ella Fitzgerald. Today's Broadcast is C1E68 for Theme Thursday, October 27th, 2022. Today's theme is a collection of spooky, dissonant, jarring music for the occasion of Halloween, on a program we're calling "They're Coming to Get You, Barbara" - a "Lost Level", originally intended for C1E37: Halloween 2018, then bumped to C1E48: Halloween 2019, before being bumped indefinitely, and lost to the sands of time....UNTIL NOW! Featuring a music block produced all the way back in July of 2018, making today's broadcast "THE KING OF LOST LEVELS"! What's the Difference Between a WAV and an MP3?

Welcome to Pocket-Sized Podcasting, brought to you by Alitu: The Podcast Maker. And on this episode, we're talking about the difference between WAV and MP3 files. They're called bitrates, and we're going to talk about them on the next episode. WAVs are known as a “lossless” format because they contain the full detail of the original recording. But only a handful of people in the world could listen to spoken-word content both in its WAV form, and on a good MP3 version of it, and be able to tell the difference. MP3s keep storage and costs down for you and your listeners. And you won't be shocked to learn that Alitu exports your episodes in MP3 form for you, automatically. Our Outro Music is Results Parade from the Check Mii Out Channel on the Wii, composed by Kazumi Totaka.    Produced using Ardour 6 / Audacity 3 in Ubuntu Studio [Linux] 22.04    A few important milestones in 2020 / 2021 that I had failed to mention in the intro, but which deserve mentioning:    A) we had our first Ch 1 episode by Hugues (which was also the first Ch 1 in the entire show's history that St. John had absolutely no hand whatsoever in producing. It was a focus on music fromFalcomgames, and was quite succinctly named "The Falcom Episode"    B) We made the migration from producing Nerd Noise Radio in GarageBand via MacOS on a mac mini (and using primarily MP3s in production – mostly through YouTube-to-MP3 websites) to producing NNR in a mix of Audacity andArdourvia Ubuntu Studio (Linux) on a mix of a Dell Latitude Laptop and my custom-built gaming PC (and using primarily WAVs in production – mostly through the youtube-dl command in the Linux terminal). The last episode to be produced in Mac was C1E52: Backtracks (April 1st 2020) and the first episode to be produced in Linux was Channel F: Backtracks – the OTHER 50 (April or May 2020). I feel like the production value on balance is noticeably and appreciably better after the change. And since Hugues is also a Linux user, that means that both sides of our Channel 2 episodes are Linux productions.    You can find the Google Sheets spreadsheet showing St. John's work in arriving at his tracklist for this episode here (WARNING: MILD SPOILERS! Contains track lists for potential future Archive-exclusive SUPER BONUS supplemental music collections:    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X6JpkqiGADAF9sHAsSpgyImjvimVWJv2mOATf5_ZZGc/edit?usp=sharing    You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    Our YouTube Channel, for the time being is in dormancy, but will be returning with content, hopefully, in 2022. Meanwhile, all the old stuff is still there, and can be found here:     https://www.youtube.com/user/NerdNoiseRadio    Our episodes (and occasionally, other content, including expanded show notes) can be found on our blog here:    nerdnoiseradio.blogspot.com.    Nerd Noise Radio is also available on The Retro Junkies Network at www.theretrojunkies.com, and is a member of the VGM Podcast Fans community at     https://www.facebook.com/groups/VGMPodcastFans/    Or, if you wish to connect with us directly, we have two groups of our own:     Nerd Noise Radio - Easy Mode: https://www.facebook.com/groups/276843385859797/ for sharing tracks, video game news, or just general videogame fandom.    Nerd Noise Radio - Expert Mode: https://www.facebook.com/groups/381475162016534/ for going deep into video game sound hardware, composer info, and/or music theory.    You can also follow us on Twitter at @NerdNoiseRadio. Born in Derby England, Singer/Songwriter - Marcia Ball began her distinguished musical career at the tender age of 6. She received vocal training from her mother, who was the lead singer of the family band The Rumbling Express Band headquartered in Jamaica Queens, New York, with Marcia and her sister providing background vocals. Her first single called “Tell Me” was released in 1990 by her brother and producer George (Meco7) Ball. She was approached by a disc jockey, John T of WAVS radio, who introduced her to one of Jamaica's biggest female vocalist, Marcia Griffiths. This was the beginning of a new era where Marcia's talent was being recognized as she became one of Ms. Griffiths' background vocalists. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donate.Fruit Bats have been on the indie rock radar since the early 00's, so I'd say that calls for a double album compilation documenting their 20 years of music! However, the brains behind FBs and it's only regular member, Eric D. Johnson, is a man who tends to solely look forward. Thankfully for us, he rolled up his sleeves, dug into some old hard drives and sifted through two decades of MP3s, WAVs, AIFFs and the like that make up the band's brand new collection: Sometimes a Cloud Is Just a Cloud: Slow Growers, Sleeper Hits and Lost Songs (2001–2021). On Basic Folk, Eric talks about growing up constantly moving around and the impact on him then and now. He also gets into his time working at Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. His time there allowed Eric to evolve and embrace his folk musicality as well as the punk side he was nurturing in Chicago's scene. He also gets into reframing career aspirations after he saw a lot of his friends' careers, who came up in indie rock at the same time he did, reaching new heights that Fruit Bats just simply weren't. He was affordable many amazing opportunities before he was ready, recording Fruit Bats debut album with Tim from Califone and then getting signed to Sub Pop thanks to The Shins and Modest Mouse's advocacy. He talks about how he felt about those chances back then and how he reflects on them now. His time playing with The Shins allowed him to "climb into someone else's work a little bit," which gave him perspective on his own. There was a time when Eric ditched the Fruit Bats name to record under his initials, EDJ, in what he calls “career stalling move,” but I pressed him to expand on the fact that it might have been a really necessary move for him personally. He's been recording and playing under Fruit Bats again since 2015, which he sees as a new era for Fruit Bats, which he gets into. I also brought up Bonny Light Horseman and the incredible vocal pairing of himself with Anaïs Mitchell, who he calls his "main singing partner" these days. Eric D. Johnson is the nicest guy in indie rock and I'm here for that!! Enjoy!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
