Business owner to business owner, can we just take a moment to have a conversation about running a business during these heavy times? Between the constant news cycle and everything that's happening in the world and in our personal lives, I want to take a moment to remind you to trust yourself. In this AI age we are craving memorable content that connects us and feels human, content that feels real and tangible. There's an increasing trend for an analog lifestyle, we'll explore what those trends look like with lots of examples (all linked below!) and how I plan to incorporate this into my own content in 2026. We'll talk about how the viral Topgolf story ended and what viral unplanned moments can teach us about belonging online. We'll also discuss how important your retention rates are and why community interactions are key to engagement and growth. In this episode we'll be covering:Reframing trendy content, especially if you feel anti-trend and don't want to follow along.Getting people to interact with your posts and how I get so many comments.Creating content that makes people feel connected and like they belong somewhere. Why the analog trend is working so well right now and how to start incorporating it into your own content plan. How to hold audience attention, and increase retention rates and watch time with current trends.Featured content in this episode:Shannonmckinstrie: Topgolf breakdownTravelingtoretirement: Our number one money rule as a married coupleProfessorcorporate: Ways to call people stupid at workSatmasterclass: WritingAmbitiouslyalexa: January journal prompts Wordsof_emmaheaphy: Journaling on screenAskbridgetteg: Boyfriend instruction manualTheselfhelpplanner: Four goals you need for 2026Vuongdusti: Media I've been consuming instead of doomscrollingCheesegal: You let your kids pick the menuTahirashome: 10 Things we did to makeRecommended episodes:Episode 067: The Importance of Belonging on Social MediaEpisode 088: Find Your Content Rhythm and Build a Simple Content StrategyEpisode 090: How You're Going to Become Really Good at Content Creation in 2026 (Part 2)Episode 092: This is the Era of Experiences and BelongingEpisode 096: Building Real Community with Stories and Shared MomentsSend a message! If you use the send a message option above, be sure to include your email address if you would like a reply! Happy New Year! We're kicking off 2026 with a special bonus episode because this is the year to stop doing motherhood alone. This one's all about building your support system, finding your people, and creating real community for you and your family. Let's go. We're joined by Megan Champion, the creator of Mothers Together—a first-of-its-kind global community designed specifically for moms of neurodivergent kids. Their mission? In Episode 177 of Paper Talk, Quynh Nguyen, Jessie Chui, and Sara Kim open up about what it truly means to build community as artists. While follower counts and viral videos can feel validating, they share why authentic connections, through workshops, newsletters, stories, and everyday conversations, are what sustain and grow a creative business. “Viral videos are great, but they don't necessarily attract the most loyal followers. It's the repeat names I see in my sales that remind me of true community.” - Jessie You'll hear Sara's perspective on how her most meaningful opportunities came directly from workshop students, Jessie's reflections on balancing different audiences and maintaining authenticity, and Quynh's stories of unexpected collaborations that blossomed from in-person connections. “Community is when you give special attention to the person—through real DMs, emails, or conversations—that's where I see the people who become students and buyers.” - Sara Together, they explore how community shapes not only business but also personal fulfillment. If you've ever wondered how to turn social media followers into real supporters, or how to nurture a group of people who truly understand your work, this episode is for you. “Our community feels like our children. We want to give them tools to grow stronger and avoid the mistakes we made.” - Quynh
As artists and photographers, we talk about creative endeavors a lot—but we don't often talk about the people involved in those creative endeavors. And yet, these people are perhaps one of the most important parts of the process. I think it's vitally important that, no matter what type of creative work you do, you find your people. Now, one might interpret that statement as getting on social media to promote your work, and to build a community of followers and admirers surrounding that work. I suppose this is helpful if you're selling your work, but truthfully, for the most part, these types of communities are not what I'm referring to when I say to “find your people.” Social media followings devoted to promotion are mainly echo chambers. It's in their nature to be echo chambers because when you are promoting yourself, the last thing you want is negativity or things that might take away from sales. Thus, the community must focus on the positives... In today's episode of Let's Talk Facilitation, I share with you my top five strategies for building real community in class. In last week's episode, I talked about the importance of students experiencing belonging as a central factor in their willingness (or lack thereof) to engage in your class, and I talked in detail about how to position the cultivation of belonging as a cornerstone of your pedagogy. How do we inspire feelings of belonging? Through community building. Today I am following up with the concrete, tangible, practical steps you can take to build community in your class. If you have been struggling to get your students to do the work, to show up to class, and to participate in your discussions and activities, you are going to want to listen to last week's and this week's episodes! My top five community-building strategies share a number of qualities in common. They all… Center opportunities for meaningful relationship building Are humanizing Allow you and your students to see one another as real people Provide space for building genuine connections Provide support for vulnerability, which is key to developing trust Here's what these strategies don't do: They don't… Involve silly games Force impersonal activities Keep everything surface level Require a performance Privilege small talk Make shy students miserable Instead, the practices I'm talking about are purposeful and strategic. They are designed to support the kind of relationships that enable students to show up to class and be valued as their authentic selves. Enjoy! FREE BONUSES In today's episode, I talk about establishing and using group norms as part of the process of building community in your class. If you'd like some ideas of how such group norms might be described, you can download a copy of my FREE PDFs “Sample Class Discussion Guidelines Statement” and “Sample Anti-Racist Discussion Guidelines Statement”.

What is the difference between inclusion and real belonging in a community? Can you have one without the other? Yes, indeed, you can. Unfortunately, there are too many groups where you can be included without feeling like you truly belong. What is the missing ingredient? Trust. Trust, which starts at the individual level, is central to a community and fosters an environment that feels safe for all members. This episode is a personal one. Some other books that have been recommended to me: My Grandmother's Hands - This is an excellent work for understanding through an intergenerational racial trauma and healing lens, and explicitly offers exercises for police, which is interesting in the current context. Mindful of Race - While politically left-leaning, I really like the tie in to a mindfulness framework and Buddhist psychology. Why We Are Polarized - I like this a lot because of its examination of race x politics x identity White Fragility - Though challenging, I think this is an important text for anyone seeking to understand the current landscape of anti-racism work. I also think it is important to read prior to reading texts by people of color as she names a lot of the issues that people of color experience and feel when interacting with white people and, in particular, talking to them about race. From this book, one could then take on Me and White Supremacy, if they were inspired to examine themselves more deeply.
