The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden
Dr Calum Miller, a medical doctor working within the NHS, joins Dr Gavin Ashenden for this 93rd episode of Merely Catholic, the podcast series for the Catholic Herald. Dr Miller graduated from the University of Oxford Medical School in 2015. As a researcher at the University of Oxford, he has published more than 30 academic papers in medicine, law, philosophy and ethics – examining such complex subjects as examined include foetal sentience, and abortion and mental health - and has won prizes for his work in bioethics from the University of Oxford and the Royal Psychiatry of Medicine In this podcast, Dr Miller describes his journey of discovery and discusses how his concern for the vulnerable and belief in true equality led him to a robust, enduring and defensible pro-life position in the face of moves to further liberalise abortion and legalise euthanasia.
Alex Forsyth presents political debate from the BBC Radio Theatre in London.
In today's episode, we're discussing the U.K.'s assisted dying bill, which is currently going through Parliament and would allow those with terminal illness to seek euthanasia to end their suffering. Medical doctor and researcher Dr. Calum Miller joins us to discuss the implications of this bill as well as some of the nefarious support this bill is receiving. On a happier note, we also talk about a recent Wall Street Journal article that shows that Bible sales are on the rise, especially among young people. And Pastor John Piper takes a stand against "gender hospitality" and the affirmation of false gender ideology. Ed Davey told the Liberal Democrat party conference that he would "cut through the government's doom and gloom" and plans to "vanquish what's left of the Conservative Party". With attention-grabbing stunts, which this week extended to arriving at the conference on a jet ski, and a record-breaking 72 seats in parliament making them the third biggest party, can the Lib Dems keep the momentum going? Niall Paterson sits down on Brighton's pebble beach with our political correspondent Rob Powell, to debrief on the gimmicks, the conference, and Ed Davey's speech. Plus, Niall catches Lib Dem MPs Tim Farron, Layla Moran, and Calum Miller to get their reaction to Davey's speech and their party's ambitions. Producer: Soila Apparicio Editor: Philly Beaumont

This week in the UK, discussions are taking place in Parliament around various aspects of the Criminal Justice Bill. One of the most contentious areas is around a couple of tabled amendments* that would remove offences that make it illegal for a woman to perform a self-abortion at any point through to birth. There's lots to unpack about the potential decriminalisation of abortion, the ethical questions around a fetus's right to life and a woman's choice. Even if we can agree on when life begins how do we navigate the rights of the mother and the unborn child. Andy Kind is joined by Lois McLatchie, Senior Legal Communications Officer at ADF, and Ellie Lee, Professor of Family and Parenting Research, SSPSSR, the Director for Centre for Parenting Culture Studies and the co-author of Parenting Culture Studies. *Since this show was recorded the proposed amendments discussed in this show have been withdrawn. The matter has been postponed to the Report stage of the Criminal Justice Bill. However, it is anticipated that similar amendments will be reintroduced during the floor debate in the House of Commons, where all Members of Parliament are expected to vote on the matter. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The effective altruist case for pro-life/anti-abortion advocacy, published by Calum Miller on November 13, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary There is a good case that abortion is morally impermissible - or at least there is significant moral uncertainty. Even if these arguments fail, abortion could still be a matter of serious concern for EAs (e.g. because fetuses could have significant but not full moral status, or because there are ways to reduce abortions without punishing women for getting them). Put another way, even if one believes abortion is permissible, it likely remains a comparable problem to any problem of infant mortality - but with even more lost life-years, and occurring on a much larger scale than infant mortality. This is a very important problem, given the life lost and the scale of the problem - tens of millions of abortions around the world each year. Outside the US, the problem is virtually unchallenged - and even in the US, there are high-impact sectors with minimal anti-abortion sentiment or efforts. The issue is more tractable than one might think, for various reasons: it is a highly neglected area in most of the world; there are effective and popular policy interventions even in the most pro-choice countries, but even more so in more pro-life countries; progress can be made even without policy interventions; even small reductions in the abortion rate save huge numbers of lives; many people are open to changing their minds about abortion and can do so in a relatively short time; etc. If you are one of the ~15% of religious EAs, you probably have even more reason to be convinced. Sex education and contraception may or may not work depending on the case. Introduction I realise this is a sensitive topic. In the developed world around 1 in 3 women have an abortion in their lifetime, meaning it is likely people reading this post have been, or will be, personally invested and affected by the topic of abortion. Please forgive me if I fail to address it in a sufficiently sensitive way, and know that this was not my intention. There is, of course, so much more to say about this, but I wanted to try and keep the post relatively short. I wrote most of this up a couple of years ago but never got round to posting it until Ariel Simnegar's post, which encouraged me to refine it a little and share here. Though I've always been on the fringes of EA and certainly don't consider myself to be up to date on EA thinking, it was EA thinking that originally made me passionate about this area some years ago, subsequently focusing my academic research on it. I think this is an important topic for effective altruists to wrestle with, for various reasons: a) if I am right, this one of the most important, neglected, and tractable problems facing humans in the near term; b) as Ariel Simnegar previously pointed out, effective altruists have typically been pretty open to considering neglected causes and particularly neglected communities - animals, future people, etc; c) so much popular discourse around abortion is hostile and badly reasoned, and effective altruists with a common interest in improving the world can improve the calibre of conversation a lot; d) effective altruists have also been open to the idea that morality can involve serious sacrifices of one's own welfare (even the permanent sacrifice of one's organs, for some EAs). Inevitably, as a blog post this discussion will have to cut out the large majority of relevant literature (especially on moral considerations), but I have tried to collect a load of the most commonly asked questions (along with my answers) at https://calumsblog.com/abortion-qa/. Please do get in touch if you would like further references/resources on these questions. The first-order ethics of abortion Arguably, for moral uncertai...

Perhaps the most heated, contentious, and difficult topic in Western World today is the topic of abortion. For those in favor of it, it is a part of basic reproductive rights and necessary for ensuring full equality of women. For those against, it is the slaughter of unborn life on the altar of convenience. Which position is right? Stereotypically, the church has sided with the pro-life camp, and many today continue in that tradition. Dr. Calum Miller is one such person. In this second part of our two-part episode, we ask Dr. Miller to defend the stance that human life does, indeed, begin in the womb.
Dr. Calum Miller (speaker at our recent Annual Conference) talks with Petra Wallenmeyer about how maternal mortality rates are calculated and what these numbers mean in relation to a country's laws on abortion. We often hear the argument that maternal deaths will increase if abortion laws are more restrictive, but is that really the case? … Continue reading Maternal Mortality Rates and Abortion – Dr. Calum Miller →

Today in The Abortion Debate: Life, Equality, and Choice, we're diving headfirst into the contentious and thought-provoking topic of abortion. What does it means to stay that life begins? It's a debate that strikes at the very core of life, equality, and personal choice. Brace yourselves as we navigate the delicate balance between the rights of the child and the rights of the mother. Joining us on this electrifying debate led by moderator Roger Bolton are two extraordinary guests. Presenting the Christian worldview and opposing abortion on demand is Dr. Calum Miller, an NHS doctor and an unwavering pro-life advocate. With a medical degree from the prestigious University of Oxford and a deep understanding of philosophy and biblical studies, Dr. Miller brings a unique insight into the intricacies of abortion policy in practice. He's here to challenge our assumptions and shed light on the moral value of the unborn. In this high-voltage discussion, we'll explore the burning questions that lie at the heart of the abortion debate. When does life truly begin? Is there ever a justifiable reason to take another life? How do we assign moral value to the unborn? And are there conditions that would tip the scales in favour of granting the fetus a right to life that supersedes a mother's right to choice? Hold on tight as we unpack the very definitions of 'pro-life' and 'pro-choice' and their profound implications for the beginning of life, human equality, and personal autonomy. We won't shy away from the tough questions, including the role of women's choice and the intersection of abortion with women's equality. Recorded on 8 December 2022 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar and Q&A with Dr Calum Miller. Even among pro-life people, there is often debate about what really stops abortions from happening. Is it best to pass laws protecting unborn children and women from abortion directly, or is sex education and family planning the real solution? What about welfare to practically provide for women in difficult financial situations? In this webinar Dr Miller summarises the empirical evidence on how best to save lives. Dr Calum Miller is a medical doctor based in the UK, and a Research Associate at the University of Oxford. He is also the International Director for Canopy Global Foundation, an organisation dedicated to combating violence against women, human trafficking and abortion globally. He speaks regularly on mainstream media and to parliamentarians around the world on how to protect both women and children from abortion. He holds a Master's Degree in Biblical Studies.
The U.S. just had its most historic moment in 50 years with the reversal of Roe v. Wade. And while countries influence one another in their policies and activist movements, the abortion landscape looks very different from country to country. As the pro-life landscape changes in the U.S., it is also shifting globally, and it's important to understand the big picture. Dr. Calum Miller provides an overview of the international pro-life movement and debunks the myth that women are safer in countries where abortion is legal. Recorded on 5 May 2022 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a discussion with Dr Calum Miller. The abortion debate is often seen as a dilemma between the wellbeing of the mother and the wellbeing of the child: for pro-lifers, the child's right to life outweighs the mother's right to choice. In fact, the empirical evidence suggests that abortion has, on the whole, been detrimental not only to unborn lives but also to women generally. In this webinar Dr Calum Miller explains how women are likewise harmed by abortion and why Christians can offer a better way. Dr Calum Miller is a medical doctor based in the UK, and a research associate at the University of Oxford, researching abortion ethics and policy. He has spoken widely on national media, and across the world to professional groups and politicians on the harms of abortion and the need to protect both mother and child. He has taken part in numerous debates, including with the former CEO of the UK's leading private abortion provider. He has published on a wide range of topics in peer-reviewed journals and won prizes from the University of Oxford and the Royal College of Psychiatrists for his work on medical ethics. When it comes to abortion, many of us may hesitant about the best way to engage faithfully. Pro-choice and pro-life advocates can be loud, combative and assertive. In many countries, the issue is extremely divisive. And yet, while keeping in mind that the battle is the Lord's and that He is sovereign, we are called to speak truth and justice in the public sphere with humility and grace. In part one of a two-part interview, Didomi podcast co-hosts Manal El Tayyar and Matthew Jones ask medical doctor and ethicist Calum Miller some difficult questions to help equip us to better engage on the topic of abortion. It is our hope that this episode and the next one equip us to understand what roles we, as a church and as Christians, need to play to care for women who are faced with one of the most difficult choices in life. Dr Miller graduated from the University of Oxford Medical School in 2015, and currently works as a medical doctor in the UK. He holds a Master's Degree in Biblical Studies and teaches Philosophy at the University of Oxford, where his research focuses on abortion policy in practice. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hechosecuador/message

At the stroke of midnight on Friday, 31 January 2020, Brussels time, the United Kingdom formally left from the European Union. Setting in motion a frantic 11-month transition period in which to negotiate everything from a trade deal to new rules on travel. Long anticipated and highly contested, “Brexit” has captured the mind and imagination of not only British politics, but society for the last four years. With Brexit semi-delivered, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson must now chart new waters and carve out a new role for Britain in the highly uncertain global political economy. On this episode of A Look at the Issues, our host, Suta Kavari, was in Brussels talking to members of the public and Members of the European Parliament about what a post-Brexit future looks like for the European continent. Suta spoke to Svenja Hahn, German MEP for Free Democratic Party, and a member of the Renew Europe alliance. Back in Oxford, Suta spoke to Calum Miller about the broader implications of Brexit for the UK and hopes for the future. Calum was the former Principal Private Secretary to former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, and now serves as the Chief Operating Officer at the Blavatnik School of Government.

This is the fourth episode of a five-part podcast series on the historical case for Jesus’ resurrection. In this series I’m joined by Dr.’s Calum Miller and Max Baker-Hytch, both of whom are well qualified to speak on the subject. Dr. Miller has been on the podcast before. He and I discussed the prior probability of the Resurrection. Super interesting exchange of ideas on that one, please go give it a listen if you haven’t. Dr. Miller graduated from the University of Oxford in 2015 with degrees in Medical Sciences (Neuroscience) and Medicine & Surgery. He’s currently teaching Ethics and Philosophy of Religion at the University of Oxford. Dr. Baker-Hytch is actually new to the show. In 2010 he received his Masters in Ethics, Religion and Society from the University of Exeter and later went on to receive a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oxford. Both of these guys are extremely intelligent and also well-versed in the evidence for the Resurrection. In Part 5 we talk about a book they’ve written together on the subject. Part 4 starts a discussion about the various explanations on offer for the historical facts surrounding Jesus’ resurrection. Did you know that Christianity is true? No, I mean like it’s actually true. It’s not just something that people believe. You know, I say that a lot, but today on the podcast we’re going to prove that. The next five episodes feature a discussion between myself, Dr. Calum Miller, and Dr. Max Baker-Hytch on the historical case for the Resurrection of Jesus. Dr. Miller has been on the podcast before. In episode 19, Dr. Calum Miller and I complete our discussion of the Prior Probability of the Resurrection. Episode 18 laid a lot of groundwork for 19. Go listen to it if you haven't! In episode 19, we get a real understanding of what it takes to form an accurate prior probability for Jesus' Resurrection. We address several objections like, "dead people tend to stay dead, so in all likelihood, Jesus stayed dead too, " "miracles almost never happen, so the Resurrection probably didn’t happen," and "any naturalistic theory is going to be more probable than God raising Jesus from the dead." All are shown to be lacking. Toward the end we address some of the concerns that historians like Mike Licona have against using Bayes Theorem in historical arguments. Over the next two episodes, Dr. Calum Miller and I discuss the Prior Probability of the Resurrection. "What the heck is that?" you might be asking yourself. Skeptical arguments against the resurrection of Jesus, for example, the objection that dead people usually stay dead or that miracles never happen, are really arguments that Jesus’ resurrection is supremely unlikely before we look at any of the evidence. Episodes 18 and 19 take these objections to task. Is Jesus' Resurrection all that unlikely before we look at any evidence? Being a conservative Christian in the United Kingdom is a very different experience from being such in the United States, to say nothing of setting out to develop a career as a young apologist. Calum Miller is a recently-graduated physician from the University of Oxford, and an academic philosopher who has a strong interest in Christian apologetics. In this short interview, Dr. Miller shares some of his thoughts about growing up in a culture were Christianity is comfortable only if it’s largely ignored, why two of the Four Horsemen hailed originally from England, and what is the best possible future for the Church both in the United Kingdom, as well as in the United States.
I received an email out of the blue a few months back from a guy named Dan Ray. He had gotten my information from Ezra Boggs, who runs the Bible and Beer Consortium here in Dallas and Fort Worth. Dan had seen me participate in a debate with Calum Miller on behalf of the BBC, and I had mentioned a few things about the Cosmos that got him thinking. He mentioned that he's working on a Master's degree in Apologetics from Houston Baptist University, and that he had been busy researching the intersection of cosmology, theology, and fantasy literature. I suggested that this might be another good opportunity for an Inquisition, and our conversation was so engrossing that it ended up spanning three separate episodes.

Two young, intelligent thinkers join Justin to debate whether atheism or theism makes best sense of the universe. Oxford student and apologist Calum Miller says that the universe we observe is likely on theism but unlikely on atheism. So it makes more sense to believe in God than not. In the first show of 2013, three 'Unbelievable?' listeners join Justin Brierley to discuss their views of atheism. Calum Miller is a Christian medical student at Oxford with an interest in philosophy. He chats with atheist Paul Orton and agnostic Steve (aka Non Stamp Collector). They both define their atheism as a mere "lack of belief in God" rather than a positive belief that "there is no God". Why the distinction?
