One of the more surprising and fun storylines of the 2025 sprint car season was the performance of Bill Balog. After 10 IRA titles and two seasons with the All Stars, he was an Outlaw rookie in 2024, but this year ended up with more Outlaw wins than Donny Schatz. On this episode come hang out with me and Bill as we talk through it all, including what made the difference this year, why he doesn't go drive for another team, and what he thinks about Carson Macedo and the Scelzis.

He now plays first team club cricket and takes the lead on all matters relating to the re-build of the junior section starting with the thriving All Stars and Dynamos programmes. There should be ballads written about Willson Contreras' brief time with the Cardinals. From his arrival as the All-Star eager for the challenge of following Yadier Molina, to that weird week when he took fly balls in left field and stopped catching, to the injuries and fractures and ultimately his move to first base, out from behind home plate without skipping a beat at the plate. Contreras brought both joy and fury to the Cardinals' lineup and clubhouse, and at some point his absence will be felt by the teammates who remain. But he won't be a alone. In a brand new Best Podcast in Baseball, recorded on Christmas Eve, Post-Dispatch editor Nathan Mills and baseball writer Derrick Goold discuss the Cardinals' counterintuitive shopping list for the holidays and what is missing from it and possibly from the clubhouse during his reboot of an organization. The Cardinals traded a starter (Sonny Gray) only to sign a starter (Dustin May) a few weeks later; they traded a right-handed bat from the middle of the order (Contreras) only to suggest a few hours later that they would now look for a right-handed bat to add to the roster. The Cardinals are swapping All-Stars for pitching depth and then looking to replace those veterans with players on shorter-term deals or with more control and less cost. What's missing from those moves is the leadership and experience that the Cardinals have long championed as part of their continuity, as part of their identity as a club. And more trades ahead could mean the departure of Brendan Donovan, who personifies the way the Cardinals like to play and be in the clubhouse; JoJo Romreo, the seasoned reliever in the bullpen; and Nolan Arenado, the future Hall of Famer and Gold Glove-cornerstone at third. Mills and Goold discuss what happens when a young group of players isn't inheriting expectations but tasked with trying to grow them. More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. In its 13th season as one of the first and most widely heard podcasts on baseball and the Cardinals, the Best Podcast in Baseball has reached a new season-high with 30 episodes. Each episode is sponsored weekly by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and lead baseball writer Derrick Goold.

Most parents want the roadmap — the blueprint that turns a young athlete into a confident, motivated, successful player. But very few families truly understand what the journey demands emotionally, mentally, relationally, and financially. In this episode of The Most Valuable Agent, Matt sits down with MLB All-Star Austin Riley and his parents, Mike and Elisa Riley, for an unfiltered, start-to-finish conversation about development, failure, trust, and perspective — from youth baseball to the World Series and beyond. Mike and Elisa explain why they always measured progress over promotions, how constant communication removed regret from hard decisions, and why they accepted that parts of a "normal" childhood would be missed — without ever losing alignment as a family. Austin opens up about early pro struggles, going 0-for-23 with 18 strikeouts, getting sent back to Triple-A after big league camp, and learning that failure is a skill that must be developed, not avoided. He shares how routine, patience, and learning from veterans helped him survive — and thrive — at the highest level. The conversation moves through injuries, physical evolution, learning how to train his body, and why setbacks ultimately led to him being in the best physical shape of his life. The episode closes with gratitude, favorite baseball memories, rapid-fire insights, and the lesson that ties everything together: Trust the process. This episode is essential listening for parents navigating youth baseball, recruiting, pro dreams, setbacks, injuries, pressure, and the business of sports — and a reminder that development is long, messy, and worth it when trust stays intact. Subscribe for weekly insight on player development, recruiting, and leadership lessons for parents raising athletes. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN • Why progress matters more than promotions or timelines • How communication eliminated regret for the Riley family • Why missing "normal" childhood moments doesn't mean failure • What early pro failure actually teaches players • How 0-for-23 became a foundation moment • Why panic is more damaging than struggle • How routine separates players who last • What demotions and service-time decisions really mean • How injuries forced Austin to truly learn his body • Why setbacks often create the best versions of players • How trust is built between parents, players, and agents • What it's like turning down $100M+ — and why they did it • Why parents must stop stressing and enjoy the journey • How gratitude reframes success at every level • Why "trust the process" isn't cliché — it's survival ABOUT AUSTIN RILEY Austin Riley is an MLB All-Star third baseman for the Atlanta Braves. Drafted out of high school, Austin developed through the minor leagues before becoming one of the game's most consistent hitters. Known for his even-keeled demeanor, work ethic, and professionalism, his journey reflects resilience through failure, mastery of routine, and trust in long-term development. ABOUT MIKE & ELISA RILEY Mike and Elisa Riley are the parents of MLB All-Star Austin Riley. Mike, a former college baseball player, emphasized fundamentals, routine, and progress over outcomes. Elisa provided balance, perspective, and emotional grounding — reminding families that the journey moves fast and should be enjoyed. Together, they model how families can support elite development without panic, pressure, or regret. ABOUT MATT HANNAFORD Matt Hannaford is a 25-year MLB agent and founder of Aligned Sports. Big Dipper and Meatball welcome the legendary Nicole Paige Brooks from Atlanta, Georgia into the studio for an episode that is messier than the BLT she made on YouTube. Nicole breaks down her drag origin story, reflects on her now-iconic verse from All Stars 10, and the conversation pivots into mugshots, holiday plans, and the art of rah rah. She also explains why biting nipples is non-negotiable and exactly what it means when you clock Crisco sitting suspiciously next to the bed. Meanwhile, Meatball recounts a truly unhinged trip to the fabric store involving getting her fupa fingered, and Dipper tells a cautionary tale of hooking up with trade that just downed a full bottle of hot sauce.Listen to Sloppy Seconds Ad-Free AND One Day Early on MOM PlusCall us with your sex stories at 213-536-9180!Or e-mail us at sloppysecondspod@gmail.comFOLLOW SLOPPY SECONDSFOLLOW BIG DIPPERFOLLOW MEATBALLSLOPPY SECONDS IS A FOREVER DOG AND MOGULS OF MEDIA (M.O.M.) Nate and Danny dig into a Western Conference mailbag for the Grizzlies, Wolves, Pelicans, Thunder, Suns, and Blazers, focusing on young bigs, long-term team-building, and how to survive in an OKC/Wemby/Jokic world.Memphis Grizzlies — 0:15What has Zach Edey's overall impact been so far, and why hasn't his strong play gotten more discussion?Given that most of Memphis' wins with Edey back came against sub-.500 teams, what's actually real and what projects beyond this season? Why are Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. “bad all of a sudden”—how much of it is attitude, effort, health, or role?Minnesota Timberwolves — 12:00If Tim Connelly decides to make a significant move, what sort of framework should he pursue—selling high on Julius Randle, moving Rudy Gobert to lower long-term risk while raising ceiling, or something else entirely?Who is a realistic trade target for Minnesota at point guard who can shoot, defend enough, and still let Anthony Edwards be the primary creator? What is Rob Dillingham's trade value right now—does he bring back even a late first? Why did the Wolves let Nickiel Alexander-Walker go—could they really not find a way to keep him or other options? How good is the offensive chemistry between Gobert and Randle actually—are they meaningfully helping each other?New Orleans Pelicans — 26:23Do Derik Queen's flaws—lack of true center size and questionable mobility—ultimately cap his long-term ceiling, or can his creation ability and defensive hands make those weaknesses not matter as much?If you're the Pelicans, what kind of offers would you need to seriously consider moving each of Jose Alvarado, Zion Williamson, Sadiq Bey, Herb Jones, and Trey Murphy III?Oklahoma City Thunder — 36:57Is OKC the deepest team of all time when fully healthy, given their bench of Kason Caruso, Isaiah Joe, Aaron Wiggins, AJ Mitchell, Kenrich Williams, J-Will, etc.?Which Western Conference teams, if any, would intentionally punt games against the Clippers late in the season to worsen the pick OKC owns from LA?What is AJ Mitchell doing defensively that makes him so effective? How many All-Stars should the Thunder have this season? If Shai Gilgeous-Alexander were to get hurt in the playoffs, how good would OKC's offense remain—could they still realistically win a series or two?Which Western Conference teams have the best chance of beating OKC in a playoff series, and how would you rank the Rockets, Spurs, and Nuggets as threats?Phoenix Suns — 47:45Given the Suns' surprising competence plus the fact they don't control their own firsts, has your view changed on how they should operate over the next 2–3 years? If you were running the Suns and received a strong offer for Devin Booker, would you trade him? With the Suns hovering around the 6-seed race, could they be sneaky buyers at the deadline—and if so, what position or role should they target given their current roster and Jalen Green's fit?Portland Trail Blazers — 53:05Is Portland's rebuild a failure—especially considering taking Scoot over Amen, choosing Klingan over Edey, trading out of the Cedric Coward spot for Hansen, and the current returns on Shaedon Sharpe? With OKC, Wembanyama's Spurs, and Jokic's Nuggets (plus Houston) as massive obstacles, how should the other Western teams approach big-picture strategy, timelines, and the pursuit of relevance?Have any of Sharpe, Toumani Camara, and Donovan Clingan actually improved from last year, or is it fair to say none of them have taken a real step forward? Most parents want the roadmap — the blueprint that turns a young athlete into a confident, motivated, successful player. But very few people have lived all sides of the journey. In this episode of The Most Valuable Agent, Matt sits down with someone who has: Kevin Griffin — • Head Softball Coach at Belhaven University • Associate Athletic Director • Former college & semipro baseball player • And father of MLB's top minor league prospect, Connor Griffin Kevin brings a rare perspective: parent, coach, recruiter, evaluator, and someone who has navigated the pressure, opportunity, and noise of both youth baseball and youth softball. He breaks down the myths families fall for, the traps parents accidentally set, how to handle multi-sport decisions, and how he intentionally slowed down Connor's journey instead of chasing exposure. You'll learn why early recruiting hurt more than it helped, why parents should stop forcing sports onto kids, why the college sports landscape has changed for the worse, and how to protect your child's love for the game in an era that pushes them to specialize earlier and chase more. Kevin also shares the real story behind Connor's reclass, his injuries, draft process, the home visits, and how failure shaped who he is. This episode is packed with insights for both softball and baseball families navigating development, recruiting, and the emotional side of youth sports. Subscribe for weekly college recruiting strategy, baseball development insight, and leadership lessons for parents. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN • Why parents must stop forcing sports — and how to spot true passion • The biggest myth about Division III softball (and why scholarships aren't what you think) • How early specialization hurts athleticism, confidence, and longevity • Why playing too many games and not enough practice is destroying development • The difference between good exposure and harmful overexposure • Why parents must treat each child differently — and why "fair" is not "equal" • What college softball recruiting really looks like behind the scenes • How NIL has changed college sports — and not for the better • Why attitude matters more than talent in the recruiting process • The real story of Connor Griffin's reclass, injury, draft pressure, and development • How home visits work — and why families must set boundaries • The #1 parenting mistake that damages the parent–athlete relationship • Why kids play to please their parents — and how that affects behavior, confidence & burnout ABOUT KEVIN GRIFFIN Kevin Griffin is the Head Softball Coach and Associate Athletic Director at Belhaven University. He has coached for over 20 years, developing nationally ranked programs and helping athletes grow on and off the field. Most golfers and entrepreneurs obsess over mistakes. You replay the double bogey, the blown meeting, the missed opportunity—yet rarely study what went right. Today's guest is one of the world's leading performance coaches, Justin Su'a, and he's here to flip that script. Justin has coached Super Bowl champions, All-Stars, World Series teams, and top CEOs. His gift? Helping high performers create the mental systems that turn pressure into clarity and success into repeatable patterns. In this episode, you'll learn how elite athletes review wins and losses, build emotional resiliency, upgrade their self-talk, and protect their relationships while chasing greatness. If you're serious about leveling up your mental game—on the course or in business—this is your masterclass. In this episode, you'll learn: Why only studying your failures keeps you from unlocking your full potential. Justin's simple three-question reflection framework that works for golfers, athletes, and executives. How to create a repeatable after-round / after-action review that fits your personality. The difference between leading and lagging indicators—and why that matters more than your score or revenue this week. How to think in second- and third-order consequences so your pursuit of greatness doesn't quietly destroy your health or relationships. A practical way to see negative thoughts as "mental rumble strips" instead of proof you lack confidence. How elite performers bounce back faster by reducing the frequency, intensity, and duration of their emotional blowups. This episode will challenge how you think about success, failure, self-talk, and the price you're willing to pay in your pursuit of excellence—on the course and in business. Get your pencils ready and start listening. P.P.S. Curious to learn more about the results my clients are experiencing and what they say about working with me? Read more here. Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Key Takeaways: Study wins too — your best days contain critical clues you're currently leaving on the table. Use a simple reflection loop — ask: What went well? What did I learn? What will I do better next time? Make reflection easy — choose the journaling format with the least friction so you'll actually do it. Think in systems — pursuing greatness without considering second- and third-order effects creates avoidable problems. Focus on leading indicators — control your routines, effort, and communication; results follow later. Upgrade your questions — better questions lead to better self-talk, better focus, and better performance. Resilience = reduced F.I.D. — decrease the frequency, intensity, and duration of your emotional blowups, not eliminate them. Key Quotes: We don't just learn from losing—we also learn from winning. Success leaves clues if you're willing to go back and study it. Create a feedback loop: What did I do well? What did I learn? What's one thing I'll do better next time? Ask it every time, win or lose. The weakest pen is stronger than the strongest memory. You're always writing for your future self. Your pursuit of excellence has second- and third-order effects. If you don't think in systems, you'll chase greatness while unintentionally burning down your health or relationships. If you want better answers, ask better questions. Your brain is like a search engine—it will fill in whatever prompt you give it. Negative thoughts are mental rumble strips. They're not proof you lack confidence—they're signals you're losing focus, so gently guide yourself back into the lane. Progress isn't never hitting the red; it's hitting it less often, less intensely, and for less time—and then learning from every episode. Most travel ball parents focus on the wrong things — more reps, more tournaments, more lessons, more mechanics, more "fixes." But in this episode of The Most Valuable Agent, MLB agent Matt Hannaford brings together two of baseball's most respected insiders to reveal what actually develops a player: • Hugh Quattlebaum — former MLB hitting coach, coordinator, and father of three boys in the youth baseball world • Gus Quattlebaum — Vice President of Scouting Development & Integration for the Boston Red Sox Together, they break down the essential (and often misunderstood) ingredients that help players become confident, adaptable, self-aware competitors — not just hitters with pretty mechanics. Hugh shares lessons from his upcoming book on youth development, while Gus provides rare insight into how scouts truly evaluate players, what stands out, and what hurts a young athlete's projection. You'll learn why players should fail more, why aggression beats perfection, why kids must learn to coach themselves, and why "zoo tiger" development is holding thousands of players back.
