Substance abuse in Canada is not often talked about at work. But it is a major crisis in human suffering, harm and risk to safety, health and death by suicide. It touches virtually every workplace, every family and every friend group. And the cold, hard costs to the workplace of that suffering, harm and risk? A 2020 study by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) and the University of Victoria's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR) reported the cost to people in Canada at $49 billion, with the largest portion in lost workplace productivity at $22.4 billion. Nearly 74,000 substance use-attributable deaths occurred in Canada in 2020, more than 200 deaths a day. In this episode host Kim MacDonald explores this workplace issue with special guest Candace Plattor who will help us break down the myths, stereotypes, and misunderstandings that many of us have built about what enabling, protection and caring looks like in today's workplace environment. The type of substance use can vary from an employee drinking alcohol during a workplace or business lunch to an employee affected by an addiction to opioids. Employers and employees can feel the impact through lowered morale, through the climate it can create or when the workplace has a culture of acceptance and not participating results in exclusion. If reducing harm and risk at work is our collective objective, Candace believes we first have to unlearn a lot of what we believe are the most helpful actions. She believes that the crisis requires a new level of workplace education to more accurately reduce risk and protect mental health and psychological health and safety. Candace discusses how to eliminate unintentional enabling, and support it all by specific actions and policies, including around some of the new drugs that workplaces now have on-site to save lives when someone has overdosed. Organizations have a non-negotiable responsibility for health and safety at work, and Candace has surprising advice for human-centred, caring leaders. According to recent statistics, over 70,000 drug overdose deaths occur in the US every year, with the percentage increasing at an annual rate of 4%. That equals to 190 persons dying each day from a drug overdose. This is a shocking statistic! As drugs become more and more accessible, the number of addicts has increased dramatically. And, not only is the person who is taking drugs affected by drug use, but also the addict's family. How can families deal with their loved ones who are addicts? My guest Candace Plattor has been a family addictions counselor and therapist for many years and was an addict herself. She shares her story of becoming addicted to various drugs prescribed by her doctor after she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. After abusing drugs for 15 years, she became suicidal and reached her bottom. Only then did she finally reach out for help. She knows all too well the challenges and sufferings of an addict and she profoundly believes that families are key to helping the addict overcome any addiction. Candace is also the author of the book titled Loving an Addict – Loving Yourself – 10 Survival Tips for Loving Someone with an Addiction. We talk about why she wrote it and how it can help families.Book: Loving an Addict – Loving Yourself – 10 Survival Tips for Loving Someone with an AddictionWebsite: https://lovewithboundaries.com/Social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/candaceplattor/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/candaceplattorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lovewithboundaries/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/candaceplattor/https://www.linkedin.com/company/love-with-boundaries/

Sometimes adversity is just the thing to bring us to a place where we're supporting others in our communities. That's part of the path for Candace Plattor, this week's guest. After a 15-year addiction to opioids, Candace has been in recovery and supporting families of addicts for the last 35 years. Candace is an addictions therapist and recognizes that there's a lack of support for family members supporting a loved one through addiction. Just one reason why that's her focus as a therapist. In our conversation, Candace and I talk about prioritizing yourself through recovery and identifying and using the language that correctly describes how we're feeling. We also talk about one of my favorite topics, boundaries: how to set them and how to communicate them to others so everyone is on the same page. I love the example Candace shared of exactly how to set a boundary with a loved one in addiction.Candace's story illustrates that people can and do come back from addiction and they can impact so many.About Candace Plattor:Candace Plattor is an Addictions Therapist in private practice, where she specializes in working with the family and other loved ones of people who are struggling with addiction. Addiction comes in various forms and is pervasive in our society as it is often used to escape from one or several feelings. But what do you do if your loved one has an addiction, and you're just don't know what to do. Candace Plattor, founder of Love with Boundaries, and I talk about the path of support and love of the loved one of an addict, and how to enable active recovery versus active addiction. Candace shares her own vulnerable story of how she became an addict, and now, 35 years sober, has used her experience and training to partner with addicts from all walks of life. While with people living on the streets in active addiction, she learned that families and loved ones were asking for their own unique type of support and faced their own unique challenges. They needed support to LOVE with BOUNDARIES. With Love, Tanya About the Guest: Candace Plattor, M.A., is an Addictions Therapist in private practice, where she specializes in working with the family and other loved ones of people who are struggling with addiction, in her unique and signature Love With Boundaries counselling program. In Candace's words: "When there is addiction in a family, everyone is affected and everyone needs to heal. There are a lot of resources available for addicts, but there is very little skilled support for the people who love them, so most families have no idea about what to do to make this horrific situation better. Enabling behaviors from family members and other loved ones keep an addict stuck in their addiction while helping behaviors assist them to become ready for recovery. When we choose to help instead of enabling, the devastating cycle of addiction can be stopped in its tracks." There are two kinds of pain–one that goes on and on and on, and the kind where there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Go towards the light. ~ Candace Plattor Challenge and crisis are never easy. But they do come with choice. While we can't always change our circumstances, we can change our responses to our challenges. The choice to change our response can break the cycle of pain and allow us to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Candace Plattor, this week's guest on the Brilliantly Resilient podcast, knows about the pain that can be created when we choose to repeat the same patterns of behavior again and again, enabling a pain that goes on and on. As an addiction therapist, Candace knows that oftentimes, the pain we live in remains because we choose to live without changing anything, and as Candace reminds us, “if nothing changes, nothing changes.” Yet, when we choose to address our challenges and change our responses to them, we can open a spot of light at the end of our dark tunnels, making that pain finite, or at least more manageable. How are you addressing the challenges in your life? Are you repeating the same actions in response over and over? Can you change your responses and alter your circumstances? To hear more of Candace's wisdom, tune into this week's episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast. Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, KS & MFB

Candace Plattor, a family addictions counselor and therapist is helping not just the addicts but also their families who struggle with them. She draws from her experience as an addict to uncover the reality of loving someone with an addiction. Her book, Loving an Addict, Loving Yourself: The Top 10 Survival Tips for Loving Someone with an Addiction, shows the addict's family how to stop the cycle of pain and chaos. Don't miss There's so little help for the families of addicts who struggle and suffer right along with them. How Candace started helping the families of addicts. The third tip of 10 tips for strategies for loving somebody with an addiction. About Candace Palttor Candace Plattor, author of Loving an Addict, Loving Yourself: The Top 10 Survival Tips for Loving Someone with an Addiction, knows from personal experience what it means to be an addict. Within a year of being diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 1973, she found herself in the throes of prescription drug addiction. Her Crohn's Disease diagnosis came at a time when the medical community had a very limited understanding of the disease and how to treat it. As a result, the treatment included some very addictive medications such as Valium, Demerol and Codeine, which she took faithfully for a number of years. Additionally, she discovered that marijuana took away a lot of her physical pain and helped her escape from feelings of powerlessness, hopelessness, and isolation. In no time at all, she became a daily pot smoker and had one more addiction to deal with. And when she ran out of pot, she abused alcohol. After more than 14 years of abusing substances, she reached “bottom” in 1987. Thus began her journey of recovery and self-discovery. In Loving an Addict, Loving Yourself: The Top 10 Survival Tips for Loving Someone with an Addiction, Ms. Plattor draws from her experience as an addict, as well as from the stories of those she continues to help in her practice, to uncover the reality of loving someone with an addiction. All too often, people with an addicted loved one in their lives will neglect themselves in an attempt to “help”. But, as Ms. Plattor points out in her book, this is a lose-lose situation that doesn't help the addict at all. Instead, loved ones must make their own needs a priority and learn to focus on their own self-care. Addictions hit most families at one point and can come in many forms. The addicts tend to get the most attention, but what often gets overlooked is the family. Healing is a family affair and shouldn't solely be focused on the addict themselves. In this latest instalment of the interview series From Science to Woo (and everything in between), we talk to addiction specialist Candace Plattor, who you may have seen speak at TedX BearCreek Park. Candace is an amazing support for families of addicts. In this episode, we cover: What defines an addiction for Candace Why Candace believes addiction isn't a disease Why supporting the family is vital to the addict Why it's important to establish boundaries out of love Healing the addict is about empowering them because they aren't powerless About the Guest: Candace Plattor is an Addictions Therapist in private practice, where she specializes in working with the family and other loved ones of people who are struggling with addiction because, as she discovered, overcoming addiction is a family condition because everyone in the family is affected by it and everyone needs to heal from it. What makes Candace stand out above most others is that she herself was a former addict with now 34 years clean. If I were to write a definition of From Surviving To Thriving and need examples, Candance would be one of them. And with her experience, skills and astounding results, she's become one of the sought-after leaders in the field of addictions by helping families, and their addicts break the devastating cycle for good. As a result, he experienced the first of many PTSD events at age five, which would begin his nearly three-decade struggle with anxiety and depression. Spending most of his life in survival mode without support, he eventually discovered and developed ways to overcome his struggles when nothing else worked. With a passion for helping others, he made it his mission to help transform the lives and impact the worlds of eleven million people so they too can give their best to themselves, their loved ones, and their career. An ancient Chinese proverb that Ray loves states, "To know the road ahead, ask those coming back." Ray is on the road back to offer you the support you need every step on your journey so that you, too, will be on the same road back. Ray believes that only those who've walked that road can truly understand the struggles that you go through. Together, we will become the rising tide that lifts all boats. Together, we are unstoppable. In his off time, you can find Ray spending time with his daughter, reading books, watching hockey, and contemplating whether pineapple belongs on pizza. “If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten.” — Candace Plattor Addiction is a topic that not many of us are not open about but in this episode, Candace Plattor, once struggling from addiction and now an addiction therapist, shows her vulnerability by telling her personal story of addiction to recovery. Candace felt very ill but the doctors back then could not figure out what was wrong with her and she was misdiagnosed numerous times which led to multiple medications including addictive ones. It was only to “treat” her illness and then she became addicted. After deciding to reach out for help, she is now 35 years clean and sober. With the amount of love and support she received during her recovery journey, she wanted to give back to people who are experiencing what she went through before. The biggest thing is nobody starts out intending to become an addict. One way or another, there has to be some sort of a root — may it be a form of medication or even sometimes a way to socialize. However, when these habits become harmful to someone's life, that's when a support system comes into play. One of the main reasons why an addict stays as one is because people around them let them, enabling them. But when we get past that point of enabling, the addict will start to notice the consequences and decide to make different choices. Enabling is never a loving act with an addict because it keeps them stuck in whatever addiction they're in. Wellness Nuggets: ● Addicts will tell you that they're powerless when they're not because they're scared to stop ● Key signs you're enabling someone's addiction: supporting finances, providing food & shelter, giving money, etc. ● We each get to decide which kind of pain we want in our lives ● 99.99% of people we encounter most likely know or are affected by someone else's addiction We invite you to ignite the Wellness Warrior in YOU! And they tell us that we're powerless over this disease. And I was already seeing that I was not powerless over this disease, you know, so it was, it was a difficult juxtaposition for me. And I decided to not continue to go. I don't see addiction as a disease. Dr Manon (18:01): There's a, the need to know that the addict can, or the one with addictive behaviours let's say is actually able to change that there is a belief, even in the 12 step program, as you said, which basically tells you to keep repeating I'm an addict. And you know, and it's like, if it becomes your label, then you really can't, you don't believe that there's even a chance to get this right. Dr Manon (18:49): And for the enablers as well, because they, they actually have that program too..
