The Ten Across geography reveals many aspects of the entire nation's future, particularly the ways climate change will reshape where we choose to live and why. This southernmost tier of the country is a natural focus for examinations of climate trendlines and the tipping points for human habitability. The residents of Louisiana's Isle de Jean Charles are often cited as the first community in the nation to be entirely displaced by coastal inundation and land loss. Recent satellite data analysis by The Washington Post aligns with many previous studies suggesting that such retreats from rising water may be required of communities throughout the Gulf Coast in years to come. In the west, states like California, Nevada, and Arizona still face the consequences of ongoing megadrought and heat, challenging agricultural output and hydropower systems, while increasing wildfire risk and the need for power-hungry air conditioning technology. Even the extreme weather and floods in California in late 2023 and early 2024 have not affected long-term drought conditions in the region. Clearly, climatic conditions along the I-10 transect are changing, and with this level of risk to property has also increased. Last fall on the podcast, we covered the impacts of climate on insurance availability in California, Louisiana, and Florida. The unprecedented insurer vacancies and soaring premiums suggest subtler, economic challenges to habitability within this region. In his new book, On the Move: The Overheating Earth and The Uprooting of America, esteemed environmental reporter Abrahm Lustgarten explores how these conditions are changing our sense of which parts of the world as really habitable, and for how long. Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and Abrahm talk before a live audience at Changing Hands Bookstore in Phoenix, Arizona, about past and present forces driving our responses to climate risk in the Ten Across geography and beyond.
This week on WASTOIDS With, we're hanging with Marc Masters. You know him best for his work with NPR, Bandcamp, Pitchfork, and of course his biweekly WASTOIDS show with John Howard, The Spindle, where each episode focuses on a different 7” record. This talk concerns Marc's latest book, High Bias: The Distorted History of the Cassette. Marc was interviewed by Jason P. Woodbury in front of a live audience at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe on November 30th, 2023. It was a dreary, rainy night, but the talk was as cozy as it gets. We hope you enjoy this conversation: head over to WASTOIDS dot com if you want to watch a video presentation of it and get more info on Marc's great book, plus see some favorite cassettes from his collection. “A plane crashes into the ocean, sinks with people trapped inside,” T.J. Newman says in describing the premise of this summer's new novel, DROWNING. The writer returns to the podcast to talk with Olivia about battling the pressures of following up her debut bestseller, and her gratitude for the opportunity to live her dream as a full-time writer. A former bookseller and flight attendant, Newman's commercial airline centered thrillers sparked bidding wars in publishing and in Hollywood. This time around, deadline pressures were as intense as the burden of expectation, but Newman said she loved writing this intensely emotional book: “At its core, this story would not work if it were not a story of grief and loss and hope and survival and a family coming together” she says. DROWNING is published by Avid Reader Press, available for pre-order before its May 30, 2023 release. Newman will be signing books at Changing Hands Bookstore, where she used to work, on Monday May 29, 2023. She'll be at The Poisoned Pen Bookstore the following night. For more on TJ Newman, and to follow the latest developments as both her books head to the big screen, visit her website.
A Mardi Gras bachelorette party leads to a chance encounter for bridesmaid Serena Khan that leads her considering blowing up the life she's carefully built just weeks before her thirtieth birthday. As if that's not challenging enough, she'll need to get it back together (or at least look together) before she's featured in a Life at 30 profile she's been anticipating since graduation, Neely Tubati Alexander joins the podcast to talk about her debut novel, LOVE BUZZ. She chats with Olivia about her favorite parts of the writing process, her approach to inclusion and representation in her work, and what it all has to do with Nirvana. LOVE BUZZ is out in paperback and audio on May 2, 2023 from Harper Perennial. For more on the author, who has a contract for two more novels currently in the works, visit www.neelytubatialexander.com Neely will celebrate her book's launch locally at Changing Hands Bookstore in Phoenix on Friday May 12.

Valentine's Day vibes on this week's podcast, with Tim Xayasomloth, bookseller at Changing Hands Bookstore. Tim has become known as "The Romance Guy" at the store ever since he challenged himself to read genres outside his fantasy and science fiction favorites, and found he loved the contemporary romance! Comparing a romance novel to a tasty margarita that “goes down easy,” Tim explains to Olivia why he believes men can benefit from reading romance to understand how to be a better guy and better partner. Tim talks about the book that started him off: “The Bromance Book Club” by Lyssa Kay Adams, and why some of the romance tropes like enemies to lovers are so enjoyable. Tim also recommends “The Right Swipe” by Alisha Rai, “The Kiss Quotient” by Helen Hoang, and Rachel Lynn Solomon's “The Ex Talk.” This podcast episode is dedicated to Elizabeth Stewart, Margaret's sister, who shared her love for books not only with her little sister, but through her career as a librarian. Jennifer J. Chow is the Lefty Award-nominated author of the Sassy Cat Mysteries and the forthcoming L.A. Night Market Mysteries (Berkley/Penguin Random House). The first in the Sassy Cat series, Mimi Lee Gets A Clue, was selected as an Overdrive Recommended Read, a PopSugar Best Summer Beach Read, staff picks for both Richland Library and Changing Hands Bookstore, and as one of BuzzFeed's Top 5 Books by AAPI authors. Jennifer has also published other Asian-American novels involving secrets and mysteries. She's active in Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and Crime Writers of Color. In Mimi Lee Cracks the Code, Pixie St. James, one of Mimi's pet grooming clients, has offered Mimi and her boyfriend, Josh, a getaway at her vacation home, nestled on beautiful Catalina Island. With the island just outside of Los Angeles but still far enough from the hustle and bustle, Mimi, Josh, and their cat Marshmallow (who, of course, wouldn't be caught dead in a dingy pet hotel) are excited for their relaxing stay. That is, until Pixie's last renter, Davis D. Argo, turns up dead. Mimi and Josh's romantic getaway immediately turns into an enormous buzzkill, especially when Pixie asks Mimi for help. The police suspect Pixie, and Mimi knows a thing or two about wrongful allegations. Mimi figures it couldn't hurt to snoop a little since she's already there, and soon discovers that a valuable item is missing. Except Pixie isn't the only one in the neighborhood who has been robbed. There is something strange happening on the island, and Mimi won't stop until she finds out what it is. Now is an uncertain time for retail. The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing retailers to make difficult decisions like whether to close their store or not, whether or not to lay off employees, whether to ask for rent deferral or not, etc. We think that now it is more important than ever to come together and share ideas and practices between retailers all over the nation. For the fourth episode in this series, Fred Clements interviews Gayle Shanks, owner of Changing Hands Bookstore with locations in Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona, and former president of the American Booksellers Association. Gayle has cultivated a passionate community around her bookstore and while talking to Fred, finds the similarities between the struggles that both bike and booksellers have faced for the last 20 years. Buttons & Figs was invited to Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, Arizona for their Bring on the Birds event! It was organized by the Maricopa County Audubon Society. Kids attending the event were able to visit a magnificent bald eagle, a menacing turkey vulture and learn about other birds brought to the bookstore by Liberty Wildlife Rescue. Because nature fills us with wonder, poet David Chorlton and Buttons & Figs kids shared their poems at the event...and we were even able to capture a few just for you...here are some nature loving friends who stopped by the bookstore proving that Poetry IS for the Birds…
