Susie wants Sarah to have a Costa Rican tropical getaway, and Sarah agrees, but she is also thinking of going fly fishing and doing cold plunges, so this could go downhill fast. We talk about Charles Shultz, the creator of Peanuts and Charlie Brown, and Susie had an ugly cry watching the documentary about him. We celebrate a man who has the world record for longest marathon time in history (which Susie believes she could top) and boo a man who did a half marathon barefoot on ice wearing next to nothing. He also has a world record for the longest plank, and we hate him. Susie is worked up about the people who made the Blair Witch Project getting a raw deal, and it reminds us of being a reality tv star, which is its own horror genre. Plus, we hear why song lyrics are getting simpler, more repetitive, and angrier, and we're sad about it.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSusie on X: https://www.x.com/susie_meisterSarah on X: https://www.x.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get $30 off the first box - PLUS free Croissants in every box - when you go to https://wildgrain.com/BRAINCANDY to start your subscription!Get an exclusive 10% off your first order at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. ‘Peanuts' creator Charles Schulz once shared that a news editor from the South told him, “I don't mind you having a Black character [on your comic strip], but please don't show them in school together.” Racial tensions were heated back then when Schultz introduced Franklin, the first Black character in ‘Peanuts,' in July of 1968—just three months after the assassination of civil rights icon, Martin Luther King, Jr. Despite Franklin's historic arrival to a legendary comic strip, pushback remained for quite some time. Join us as host Eddie Robinson dedicates a powerful episode to two individuals who are making a profound impact on the lives of young students – syndicated cartoonist, Robb Armstrong and bestselling author, Tiffany Jewell. Armstrong, who would later become Schultz's close friend and protégé, chats unguarded about the impetus to create Franklin and how the character has evolved—as he's co-written a new origin story entitled, “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin,” now available on AppleTV+. Later in the episode, Jewell explores highlights from her latest book, “Everything I Learned About Racism I Learned In School,”—a collaborative memoir of her own story, along with other contributors, about how they were often racialized, at times subtle or blatant, both in and out of classrooms. While children of any race absorb coded messaging and information—whether from a ‘Peanuts' comic, a playground incident or an experience with a teacher—I SEE U takes on a provocative conversation that helps identify opportunities to course correct generations of systemic racism in places and spaces of education once thought to be safe, fair, inclusive and equitable.

State of the Arts Episode 164 now available on Spotify and other platforms! Comic book illustrator and author Alfonso Wong was a Hong Kong legend whose work became appreciated internationally. Like a combination of Charles Shultz and Jerry Seinfeld, Alfonso Wong created a simple, yet humorous, comic book series about day-to-day life in the bustling metropolis that was Hong Kong under the United Kingdom. The star of his hilarious stories is Old Master Q, or as he is known in Cantonese, Lo Fu Zi. His zany protagonist spends his time with a quirky group of companions. Their silly adventures take place at work, in their homes, in barber shops, on the street and other ordinary places. These comic books have been available since 1964. They can be purchased in most Chinese book stores in any Chinatown and of course, in Hong Kong. The illustrations are self explanatory, so the stories can be understood even by those who can't read Chinese. I have many fond memories of enjoying these comic books as a child, as do many members of my family. This is why my Mom Caroline Osborne, is joining me on this commemorative episode of this late creative genius. Alfonso Wong passed away quietly in California at the age of 92. His son will carry on the distribution of his father's comic books. This beloved artist brought so many smiles to countless people all over the world. May he rest in peace and may his work forever be celebrated.

Most of us fans of the Peanuts comic strip and CBS animated movies believed The Peanuts Movie would be a horrible big screen adaptation. How could they ruin something so pure? The fear that the 'big machine" would take something some simple and untainted by box office scores and critical maleficium presented the uncertainty and fear that Charlie Brown would again, miss the football.  But, wait. Lucy did pull the ball away this time. No, she held it in place and ol' Chuck Brown punted his way into another storytelling medium. So how did the Peanuts movie hit the mark? Very simple. The Peanuts Movie stayed true to it's muse. Not only did the adaptation of The Peanuts capture the sensibility of the comic strip, it will also serve as a great compliment to the many animated movies. Quite often it is difficult to transformed something simple into something that requires many hands and more money than the creator Charles Shultz ever earned from the many years and over 18,000 strips he drew single handily, but somehow they got it right. From the jumpy animation to the exact details of Charlie Brown’s hair, The Peanuts Movie, deserves a place in the upper echelon of successful page to screen adaptations. In This Peanuts Episode: Give That Kid A Zanax If Charlie Brown were Chuck Brown of 2015, he most likely would be place on some sort of drug for depression. Sad but we know it’s true. Studies prove that too many children these days are prescribed drugs to help them cope with feelings kids back in the 1930’s had no means treat. Charles Shultz himself suffered from some type of psychological disengagement from the world around him. Kids and Sexual Behavior How old were The Peanuts kids? They dealt with a lot of heavy being only adolescence. Linus was a shrink to Charlie and kids could consult with Lucy for only a nickel. Maybe we should stop fooling ourselves; kids aren’t innocent and question life and their bodies. We as parents just don’t need to know unless it becomes more that just adolescence curiosity. Megan Trainor Dancing equals movement and Megan Trainor should just stop all together. Did anyone else think that the use of modern music was, say, out of place in film? The Dance Zombie kid rocks, PigPen is a time traveler from the 1930’s and Franklin’s fade. The Regular Kid The evolution of Franklin, the first Black Peanuts character, is quite endearing. Snoopy and The Red Baron Another hit the mark moment. I loved Snoopy and The Red Baron tales and the movie really captured the great iconic moments of that battle between the plane and the doghouse. Kristin Chenoweth as Fifi After watching the credits, it was discover that Kristin Chenoweth played Fifi, Snoopy’s mute love interest. Why? Comic Strips Which comic strips do you read or have you read and which are your favorite? Comment below. Bacon and Hobbes Calvin and Hobbes will never make it to the big screen and that is great! Welcome back to the show! Ed and Chris break open the long boxes and review some comics. Some new. Some old. All really worth checking out. DAY MEN #8 brings this series that helped start the podcast (it was our first book we reviewed). ROWANS RUIN #1 caused Ed to that overseas house exchange next summer. WE(L)COME BACK #2 convinces Chris that this book should be a television show. Ed go way back to the early years of BOOM! Studios and talks about POTTER'S FIELD #1-4. We had Brad our nutrition expert back to give us all the insight needed to assist in developing a general program for our young athletes. We also had Charles Shultz back to give his insight as well - Charles is the owner of Super Fit Training in Pickerington, Ohio and he deals with great amount of youth athletes. A great show overall. Below are some nutritional guidelines that Brad put together for Baseball Players. • Baseball players do not need to eat extra calories because baseball is not a game of continuous activity. Pitchers and catchers need more calories than infielders and outfielders.A 183-pound pitcher burns about 900 calories in 2 hours of play, whereas a fielder burns only 610 calories in 2 hours. • Baseball players need 2.3 to 3.2 grams of carbohydrate per pound of body weight per day (5 to 7 g/kg/day).Good sources of carbohydrates include whole grain breads and cereals, fruits, and vegetables. • Baseball players need 0.55 to 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day (1.2 to 1.7 g/kg/day).Good choices for protein include fish, chicken, turkey, beef, lowfat milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, nuts, and soy. • Baseball players need 0.45 grams of fat per pound of body weight per day (1 g/kg/day). Choose heart-healthy fats like canola oil, olive oil, and nuts. We had a great guest come speak on this episode, the founder and owner of Super Fit Personal Training, in Pickerington Ohio. The one and only Charles Shultz -- he is a strength coach and has been since 2008, working daily with high level youth athletes and weekend warriors, getting them to their highest physical potential possible. Dave and I, listened a lot and try to assist Charles the best we could but I he did not need much help on this topic.
