#101: Finding meaning in the maybe (feat. John Kaag)

Cognitive Revolution

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2023 78:49

For many of us, life is a process of minimizing uncertainty. We spend our days trying to eliminate uncertainty from our lives. Find the right career path, the right partner, buy a house, or at least find a sense of long-term settledness. Raise a family and put our kids on track to get into the right college, so they can start the process over again finding the right career, the right partner, and so on. The implicit idea in this is that there's a point in life where we reach quiescence, where all the big problems are figured out. But here's the thing. Life doesn't work like that.Life is not a problem to solve. It cannot be terminally fixed. Something can always go wrong. There's always the next thing. And so if you're living your life, even tacitly, under the assumption that it's possible to reach this point, you are operating according to the wrong model of the world. These are themes that I've long been grappling with in my own life, and they're resonant in the work of my guest today, the author and philosopher John Kaag. Kaag is a professor of philosophy at U Mass Lowell, but he has that rare quality of someone who makes his living as academic philosopher: he lives his life as a classical philosopher. To him, ideas aren't just for arguing about it. If you're getting them right, they should tell you something—hopefully something important—about living. He's a student of the work of William James, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Henry David Thoreau. His books include American Philosophy: a love story, Hiking with Nietzsche, and Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James can save your life. A theme that runs through the work of these thinkers, and by extension John's own, is how uncertainty is crucial to meaning-making. In a way, once something has become certain in our own life, it gets taken for granted. I think if we're being honest with ourselves, we can readily identify this effect: whether in a complacent relationship, or in the pursuit of material comfort, or whatever it may be. Once it's all shored up, it no longer seems something so worth striving after that you can build your life around it. It's sort of like artificial intelligence. Whatever milestone AI successfully achieves, Gary Marcus will tell you that, well, that's not what AI really is.I think there's important in the idea that uncertainty is something to embrace, not just because it's a fundamental and inescapable part of life. But because it can also itself be a source of great meaning. If that's something you're interested in being more closely in tune with, I think you'll get a lot out of this conversation. At the end of each episode, I ask my guest about three books that have most influenced their thinking. Here are John's picks:* Waldenby Henry David Thoreau (1854)One American Transcendentalist's attempt to wring meaning from everyday life.* Thus Spoke Zarathustraby Friedrich Nietzsche (1883)Nietzsche's keystone… novel? meditation? confession? about an individual who is struggling to become who he is.* Man's Search for Meaningby Viktor Frankl (1946)The most recommended book on this show. The classics are classic for a reason.* Existential Psychotherapy (Honorable mention)by Irvin Yalom (1980)The 700 page version of Man's Search for Meaning. (Never heard of it myself, but it looks really good!)Books by John:* 2020: Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James Can Save Your Life* 2018: Hiking with Nietzsche: On Becoming Who You Are* 2016: American Philosophy: A Love Story(I hope you find something good for your next read. This holiday season got me to thinking about America's spirit of giving, and I don't mean this overdone business of Christmas, Hanukkah and other holiday gifts. I mean our true spirit of giving – giving of ourselves. Yes, we are a country of rugged individualists, yet there's also a deep, community-minded streak in each of us. We're a people who believe in the notion that we're all in this together, that we can make our individual lives better by contributing to the common good. The establishment media pay little attention to grassroots generosity, focusing instead on the occasional showy donation by what it calls "philanthropists" -- big tycoons who give a little piece of their billions to some university or museum in exchange for getting a building named after them. But in my mind, the real philanthropists are the millions of you ordinary folks who have precious little money to give, but consistently give of themselves, and do it without demanding that their name be engraved on a granite wall. My own Daddy, rest his soul, was a fine example of this. With half a dozen other guys in Denison, Texas, he started the Little League baseball program volunteering to build the park, sponsor and coach the teams, run the squawking P.A. system, etc. etc. Even after I graduated from Little League, Daddy stayed working at it, because his involvement was not merely for his kids . . . but for all. He felt the same way about being taxed to build a public library in town. I don't recall him ever going in that building, much less checking-out a book, but he wanted it to be there for the community and he was happy to pay his part. Not that he was a do-good liberal, for God's sake -- indeed, he called himself a conservative. My Daddy didn't even know he had a political philosophy, but he did, and it's the best I've ever heard. He would often say to me, "Everybody does better when everybody does better." If only our leaders in Washington and on Wall Street would begin practicing this true American Philosophy.

In Pragmatism's Evolution: Organism and Environment in American Philosophy (University of Chicago Press, 2020), Trevor Pearce demonstrates that the philosophical tradition of pragmatism owes an enormous debt to specific biological debates in the late 1800s, especially those concerning the role of the environment in development and evolution. Many are familiar with John Dewey's 1909 assertion that evolutionary ideas overturned two thousand years of philosophy--but what exactly happened in the fifty years prior to Dewey's claim? What form did evolutionary ideas take? When and how were they received by American philosophers? Although the various thinkers associated with pragmatism--from Charles Sanders Peirce to Jane Addams and beyond--were towering figures in American intellectual life, few realize the full extent of their engagement with the life sciences. In his analysis, Pearce focuses on a series of debates in biology from 1860 to 1910--from the instincts of honeybees to the inheritance of acquired characteristics--in which the pragmatists were active participants. If we want to understand the pragmatists and their influence, Pearce argues, we need to understand the relationship between pragmatism and biology. In Pragmatism’s Evolution: Organism and Environment in American Philosophy (University of Chicago Press, 2020), Trevor Pearce demonstrates that the philosophical tradition of pragmatism owes an enormous debt to specific biological debates in the late 1800s, especially those concerning the role of the environment in development and evolution. When you think of philosophy, you probably think of ancient Greece or 18th century France. You probably don't think of America. But this country also birthed its own set of philosophical luminaries, and my guest today had a unique encounter with them. When modern day professor of philosophy John Kaag was a graduate student at Harvard, he was dispirited and struggling personally and professionally. But thanks to a chance encounter with an elderly New Englander, he discovered an abandoned library in New Hampshire full of rare first edition books of the great works of Western philosophy, many of which were owned by quintessentially American thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and William James.  Kaag began cataloging the books, and in the process, uncovered the intellectual history of American philosophy and its responses to big existential questions like, "Is life worth living?" Today on the show I talk to John about his experience with this abandoned library in the woods of New Hampshire, and with the authors of the books which were contained therein. We start off talking about how American philosophy is often overlooked, and its big ideas, which include transcendentalism and pragmatism. We then dig into how the works of European and Asian thinkers influenced American philosophers like Emerson and Thoreau, while they yet tried to make something completely new. John and I then discuss how American pragmatism was developed in response to the philosophical issues Darwinism created around free will and what it means to live a moral life.  We end our conversation discussing how the pragmatist William James answered the question of whether life is worth living and how his answer might be said to hinge on one essential word: if. In this episode I interview Rev. Josh Reeves: minister for over 10 years, serving in Irvine, San Diego, Seal Beach, and most recently in Lakewood, Colorado. He has written three books and began a podcast this year entitled "Weekly Wisdom." Find his podcast here: http://themeaningplace.org Show Notes: 00:00: Opening  00:42 Introduction of Podcast 2:10 Intro to Reverend Josh Reeves Josh's message is were filled with humor, light, and such depth. Josh has been a minister for over ten years currently serving in Lakewood, CO. Written 3 booKs and began a podcast tilted weekly Wisdom. He loves people well. - Stacey   5:15 - A Different Take on Ministry I think I have a different perspective in the spiritual realm of things, in that religion, spiritual thinking and philosophy to me… I love it but it comes second to  living life and to people. That's my love and that's where I connect with a sense of the sacred most. Caring is the most essential thing that we do, both in a kinesthetic sense (moving our arms and our hands and getting out of bed to how we treat each other each day. For me, when we can put that as our foundation in whatever service work were doing its amazing and sacred what shows up.   7:45 - On Navigating Personalities and Where to Point Your Feet My essential spiritual practice is relating with people. That dialogue and that listening is so important to enriching our lives and feeling heard. What I’ve learned over time as well is that listening and conversation isn't just a one on one thing really. At its deepest level, the best talks that I give is when I'm really feeling tuned into the collective wisdom of the community. I want to get up there and be a reflection of their wisdom, not necessarily bring down from some philosophized mountain some wisdom for them that they don’t already have. I want to reflect their dreams, their vision, and sometimes even their pain. Speaking isn't so much giving a lecture, it's about building a rapport and having a conversation with folks around you. That to me is where real spiritual connection happens and real transformation can begin to occur.   14:03 Inspired to Become a Minister Part of what Im a ‘part’ of is almost like a Wild west of spirituality. So what I’m really interested in is what deep, inclusive spirituality really looks like and what does open minded spirituality really look like.   17:00 Principles of Science of Mind Science of mind as a philosophy started getting going in 1920s branch of The New Thought Movement comprised of half women leaders. New Thought to me is kind of a combination of folks who were trying to renew Christianity and renew values and focus on physical healing in particular with kind of this new found American Philosophy of Religion independence and self exploration. Science of Mind (as a branch of New Thought) is an exploration of the mind and what it can do. It's about using ancient spiritual wisdom that you might find in lots of different faiths and how do we apply it to the laboratory or life to get results. Our thoughts are creative and if we focus them in then we can co-create our lies with the divine power and law of attraction.   20:57 Yeah But Isn't This Just For The Rich Westerners I think there is this idea that our spirituality is about creating greater hope for ourselves, and remembering even when we’re suffering and going through hard times, that were children of God. That were beautiful and precious expressions of something.   23:40 Using where you are and then evolving something It’s interesting when a spirituality shows up as a certain time how we can use it and connect with it in our heart and translate it in a new way that it can actually evolve it over time. Change nothing evolve everything, by bringing more consciousness, more awareness, better listening. 26:16 On Vulnerability Something that I want to be able to do in ministry or when Im sharing is not just share my flaws, but really share how I’ve seen and found the sacred in my flaws and mistakes.   28:48 On Success Those people to me that are the most successful are the people who are putting their whole heart into what they do everyday whatever it is and are at peace wit it and themselves, People committed to their own thriving. I love seeing folks who are willing to shed the skin they've been in and be willing to be reborn in a new way.   32:59  One of my Biggest Life Lessons and Being Committed to Your Highest Good It was an important thing for me to give up trying to make things happen in my life To let all that go and  focusing on being really good at doing whatever was on front of me to do. When I stopped focusing on aiming to try and make things happen or forcing them to and just focused on doing a good job - the success and opportunities came out of that. As opposed to getting everything I wanted in life I got something even better, which is even More than I could have Imagined by being willing to not know and follow a path Success rarely works the way you tell it to, but as a natural fruition of being you at a high level instead of on low.   37:00 Favorite adages or quotes “Caring is everything” “All you can take with you is that which you've given away” To realize there are so many treasures within us and around us but when we hoard them and hold them, they lose all value. And so you have to share them with your life to really get the gifts and presents out of things. 38:12 On Safety, Openness, and Healthy Boundaries It brings relief for someone to say you're safe You can’t have fun if you don’t feel safe, you can’t learn if you don’t feel safe - Stacey “To the extent that we control, we limit love in our lives.”  - John Townsend Boundaries aren’t the walls that we build to keep eachother out, they’re the guidelines that we agree to so that we can have intimate space with one another.   42:05 On Listening and Judgement What I want to bring is not just a willingness to get people to dialogue, but to listen better and to also not be afraid to have their hearts broken. And by that I mean that is to not let themselves be complacent o the terribly shitty things that are going on out there. Sometimes we're so rushed to fix things, and find the answers to things, that we don't stop to acknowledge enough the pain and just be in it for a while. And that kind of takes courage, but you don’t get to that safe place to make right decisions until you’re willing to look the pain dead in the eye. Listening requires some form of understanding our connection. Understanding that when I’m listening to you, I’m listening in to me. That there is that communal wisdom. That there is a connection, we are threaded together. -Stacey Judgement is when you're in a relationship with an idea that you already have about somebody or something. And so the relationship you're in is in your head. The listening is already in your head so you're not really listening ndn present. You may have to change your philosophy and the things you've built your foundation on. “To truly listen is to risk being transformed forever.” Sakej Henderson 47:40 Sex is the answer… I mean Pie.   48:43: Where can you find Reverend Josh? A Breadcrumb is a short, 8-20 minute episode that was cut off from a longer show, that's a collage of little clips, or, as in this case, that is a response to listener feedback. Today's breadcrumb episode is a bigger version of what in the past we called a "You Tell Me!" segment. In this second breadcrumb, Dr. Eric Thomas Weber and Dr. Anthony Cashio invited Dr. Danielle Lake back on the show. Danielle was first interviewed in Episode 12 of the show, which we called "That's a Wicked Problem You've Got There." Recall that Dr. Lake is assistant professor in the department of Liberal Studies at Grand Valley State University, with her Ph.D. in Philosophy. In 2016, she was honored with the John Lachs Award for Public Philosophy from the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. She is the author of Institutions and Process: Problems of Today, Misguided Answers from Yesterday (2008), in addition to many journal articles.  As always, you can reach out to us on Facebook @PhilosophyBakesBread and on Twitter @PhilosophyBB; email us at philosophybakesbread@gmail.com; or call and record a voicemail that we play on the show, at 859.257.1849. I spoke to John Kaag about his memoir, American Philosophy, shortly after the 2016 presidential election, so although we did spend a fair amount of time talking about his personal story, and how a rare book collection tucked away in an old building in the woods of New Hampshire helped Kaag make his way back from a profound, life-questioning despair, we also discussed what American philosophy can do to give solace to those of us who were shocked by what looked (and still looks) like the triumph of wrong over right, of evil over good. Philosophy, I think, offers us a guide to how we can live our lives, how we can best respond to the world around us, by getting in touch with what others have called "the better angels of our nature." Kaag recommends essays by James and Henry David Thoreau as starting points for readers interested in what the American philosophical tradition, with its emphases on pragmatism and renewal, can tell us about how to move forward. And he hints at future writings on his part that might follow in those footsteps: "I think that there are lots of times in the history of philosophy where philosophers have had to stake a great deal on their thoughts, and I think that we might be entering one of these times," he says. "I'm in the process of writing another sort of memoir like this one, but... it will have to be in some ways politically oriented, or socially oriented, because I think it's wholly unacceptable for philosophers to ascend into the ivory tower when things are going really nasty."

More at http://philosophytalk.org/shows/latin-american-philosophy. Latin American Philosophy began centuries before anything of much philosophical consequence happened in North America. Yet in our own time, Latin American Philosophy is undergoing a protracted identity crisis. Is it just transplanted European philosophy? A reaction to analytical philosophy? A reflection of the themes of liberation theology? John and Ken explore Latin America's philosophical traditions with Joseph Orosco from Oregon State University, author of "Cesar Chavez and the Common Sense of Nonviolence."
