HAPPY HALLOWEEN! This year we're talking about sacrifice - including human sacrifice so TRIGGER WARNING: death and child loss/sacrifice. Every Halloween we examine some of the myths and legends that make up the image of The Halloween Witch, and the ways it differs from real witchcraft. In this episode you'll learn what sacrifice and offerings mean to modern witches, how to make them in your own practice, and some of the interesting difference across cultures and religions. Then we get spooky - human sacrifice, and hurting children - is a big bad ugly part of the popular fiction about evil witches. Where did this come from, and why do these ideas persist? Also... where and why were ancient people sacrificing humans in the first place?! This is not an episode to listen to with your kids or trick or treaters, sorry everyone! #037 – What really happened at Salem - with Kathleen M. Brown

The Salem Witch Trials may well be the single most notorious and iconic event of America's colonial period. Every Halloween, Salem, Massachusetts, hosts untold thousands of tourists who revel in the city's occult history and reputation as America's haunted capital of spookiness. But as well-known as the Salem Witch Trials are, they remain a hotbed of historical inaccuracy and misconception. So what exactly happened? How did a sleepy, growing Massachusetts town become the epicenter of witch hysteria? Did everyone go insane, or were the Salem Witch Trials perfectly consistent with the worldview of Salem's citizens. To help us clear this up, Kelly and John asked University of Pennsylvania history professor Kathleen M. Brown for her insights. Brown is a historian of gender and race in early America and the Atlantic World. Educated at Wesleyan University and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, she is author of Good Wives, Nasty Wenches, and Anxious Patriarchs: Gender, Race, and Power in Colonial Virginia (Chapel Hill, 1996), which won the Dunning Prize of the American Historical Association. Her latest, Undoing Slavery: Bodies, Race, and Rights in the Age of Abolition, was published in 2023.

Whether you're a military professional, business leader, or someone looking to elevate your personal and professional life, JJ Parma's story will inspire and motivate you to strive for excellence. In This Episode You Will Hear: • I grew up 2 streets over from Marvelous Marvin Hagler. (4:28) • Everything about my childhood today is about perspective. (6:48) • [I grew] up in the inner city, a very diverse multicultural place. You name it, we had it. Portuguese, Greek, Black, Spanish, and Spanish populations – we had it all. (6:52) • My mother was the true definition of a hero – selfless. (9:20) • I would spend my time as a child alone, in a pool, teaching myself to swim. I was so comfortable, I would stay there all day, all night, all summer. (17:00) • I had every book on the Vietnam War that you could possibly imagine. (32:24) • I was the kid who tied my friends to a tree. (32:28) • This fascination with the military never really went way. It built and built. Every Halloween, guess what I was? Some kind of Army guy with face paint. Some commando, running around. (33:00) • [Navy SEALS] They're like Green Berets - but the water… it was the water – peace. Nobody does that. That's what I want.  Maritime. (39:04) • Rick Kyser was my mentor. He was phenomenal. He told us the story about Black Hawn down from his perspective. That was it for me. Hook, line, and sinker. This is the job for me. (48:19) • In Serbia, the Muslims were being eradicated by the Serbs. Genocide Level 1. And we went there defending the Muslim population. The peacekeeping mission was that we were protecting them. When it gets political, people want to hone in on the politics. They don't know the stories on the ground.  The stories on the ground never get told. (61:52) • We spent 3 months ship-chasing Bin Laden's family. There was a container ship in the northern Arabian Sea which had one of Bin Laden's sons on it, transporting arms. You know what we found? 55 containers of rice. (70:27) • Next thing you know, I hear it. A 2.75 rocket. Hits about 1-15 yards from the back Humvee. The Humvee comes off the ground, lands, I'm in the 3rd Humvee looking back, and I'm like “We just lost a couple of guys right there.” (82:58) • I got a letter from Bush with Team 10's original coin which said “Victory through Violence”, which they stopped making. Now it's “Victory through Valor.” (92:19) • We have so many skills, and our skill set so vast, it's all lexicon. That the trick that the civilians play on you. (100:26) • Find a good swim buddy. (101:15) • Moments are fleeting. One thing that's finite is death. They're told by society that this how it has to go. You have to live this phase, this phase, and this phase, and then you're gone. And they live that way. We're gonna try to reset that. (110:46) • When you find your swim buddy – if they find you at your lowest point – that's a keeper. (111:52) • People need to fail, because from failure, launches a whole new life lesson. Every Halloween, however, Chuck tweaks the game, making a few subtle changes to keep things interesting for him and the kids. This year, he is changing something he never expected to change, ever, and he talks about how Halloween will work at his house -- and maybe yours if you follow suit -- come Oct. 31. Plus, Andrew Krei, co-chief investment officer at Crescent Grove Advisors, talks about how the higher-for-longer rate environment -- coupled with the narrow stock market -- has given investors an opportunity to reposition and rebalance portfolios to play defense while being compensated with better yields, but he does warn that there may be more maneuvering to do once rates start to fall again. Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree discusses record credit-card rates and the alarming number of lenders now issuing cards with a 29.99 percent rate or higher. In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Jack is joined by Agnieszka, Salimeh, and Ana Maria for a spooky Am I the Jerk? episode.Title: AITJ for Not Allowing Trick-or-Treaters in My Haunted House?Every Halloween, I (40M) transform my house into a haunted maze. I spend weeks decorating it with spooky props, animatronics, and fog machines to create a genuinely terrifying experience. It's become somewhat of a neighborhood attraction, and kids and adults alike look forward to visiting every year. This year, as usual, I went all out with my decorations, and my haunted house was scarier than ever. However, I added an extra element to the experience - live actors dressed as monsters who would jump out and startle the visitors. I thought it would make the haunted house even more thrilling. As the night went on, I noticed that some younger children, around 6-8 years old, were coming to my door with their parents, excited to go through the haunted house. Seeing their age and knowing how intense the experience could be, I made a snap decision to tell them, "I'm sorry, but this haunted house is too scary for kids your age. It's not recommended for children under 12. Maybe next year."The parents were upset, and one of them accused me of being a Halloween snob and ruining their kids' Halloween experience. They argued that it should be up to the parents to decide whether their children could handle it or not. Now, I'm questioning whether I was the jerk in this situation. Was I being overly cautious, or was I justified in not allowing young children to go through my extremely scary haunted house? AITJ?What do you think? Was the homeowner in this situation the jerk for not allowing younger kids to enter his extremely scary haunted house, or was he trying to ensure their safety and comfort?Podcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-quick-tok-42-aitj-for-not-allowing-trick-or-treaters-in-my-haunted-house/Social Media:Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/671098974684413/Tik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22A to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastCheck out our You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. By: Gabriella Raful, WXVU News Director Spectacular meteor showers are set to peak in the skies over Pennsylvania in the coming week, but some cloudy weather could get in the way. The Orionid meteor shower will hit its peak Friday morning. The best viewing will be early in the morning Friday and the days before. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights look to be mostly or partly cloudy, but things are forecasted to clear up by Thursday into Friday, which is the peak of the showers. The moon will disappear and leave mostly dark skies for the peak, when about 20 shooting stars an hour are predicted to fly. The meteors are fast-moving and occasionally produce bright fireballs and leave persistent trains. The hours between midnight and dawn are the best time to see the Orionids. In other news, Michael Kane, a West Chester dad, is rounding up all of the best fall must-sees in Pennsylvania and all over the country! From attractions and professional events to incredible, homegrown Halloween displays, the new free app called FrightMaps features it all. Kane is a software engineer who first brought us the ChristmasPrism app in 2020, which allows you to discover the best holiday lights and displays in your area. Now, he's back with the Halloween roundup, which maps out all of the tricks and treats. “It's every major haunted attraction in America,” Kane says. “But it also allows every home haunt. Every Halloween enthusiast can upload their house as well so that everybody can find their 12-foot skeletons, blow-ups and other Halloween decorations.”

This episode is dedicated to Justine. Every Halloween she was a Disney princess and she always nailed it. She would dye her hair Little mermaid red or jet black for snow white. And style it impeccably. She was really talented like that. Bitches would complain that she took up the entire dressing room with her costumes and makeup boxes but she didn't give a fuck; she was the first to arrive and last to leave every day. I liked her so much. She had a rough life that ended terribly. This ones for her. ❤️

Hallowicked is one of ICP's most important shows of the year, and at every one, a limited single was pressed up exclusively for those who attended. Now, we've heard a couple of these tracks crop up here and there on some prior collections, but in 2005, ICP included a full compilation of all the Hallowicked tracks made up to that point and packaged it with Forgotten Freshness 4. Does this compilation track the evolution of the Wicked Clowns in a concise way? Do ICP grab some big names to hop on the spooky tracks? Does Schmeev find anything appealing about anything aside from "Every Halloween", a stand-out track from FF3? Find out this and more today. Trick or treat, what's in the bag? Every Halloween, when the late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel invites parents to video tape lying to their children having eaten all of their Halloween candy, it never fails to produce funny, hilarious, and some heart-wrenching videos of kids having officially lost their mind over the prank. However, it's truly astonishing to find a kid or two who mange to stay calm and collected in the face of candy-distress. It is reasonable to ask how children regulate themselves during a conflict or disappointments of everyday life and bring themselves in the zone of an emotionally balanced internal state. On this episode, Sucheta interviews author and creator of the Zones of Regulation® framework, Occupational Therapist, and autism specialist, Leah Kuypers, who talks about the benefits of the cultivated ability to achieve a preferred state of alertness that corresponds to the context where one has to act and behave. By figuring out and knowing the science of how the body and emotions are interconnected everyone can stay calm and carry on.  About Leah KuypersLeah Kuypers earned a Bachelors of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Graduate Certificate in Autism and a Master of Arts in Education from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN.  She has practiced as an OT/autism specialist in school and clinical settings, specializing in self-regulation and social learning, and has worked with students of all ages and challenges, including anxiety, ADHD, and ASD.  Leah created The Zones of Regulation® (www.zonesofregulation.com), a framework designed to teach self-regulation, and is author of the book and two apps by same name (2011, Social Thinking Publishing; 2013, 2016 Selosoft, Inc). Michael Jackson's song Thriller was produced by Quincey Jones, and of course, first released on Jackson's album Thriller on Nov. 30, 1982. Thriller won a Grammy Award. It is often cited as a pop culture phenomenon and a Halloween anthem. It was his album's seventh top ten single on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 4. I thought I would never see Michael Jackson's video Thriller when I first came out because everything was aired on cable TV that seemed new and exciting. Luckily my grandfather had cable, and at the family gathered together to watch Thriller. It was kind of scary seeing Michael Jackson gradually change into a werewolf. But it was very entertaining and enjoyable. I had never seen a music video like Michael Jackson's Thriller before. It was considered a mini movie and the longest music video I had ever seen made. Every Halloween, it seems Michael Jackson's song Thriller is heard on the radio and comes to mind. I'm Gail Nobles, and you're listening to the Cat Bear. Every Halloween, someone will inevitably make the local news by going a little too far with their decorations. Police will often arrive at what some citizen believed to be the genuine scene of a horrible crime only to find that the dismembered bodies on display are dummies, and the blood covering them is ketchup. Occasionally though, an opposite scenario plays out. October is the one month of the year that people might walk past a mangled body lying on their neighbor's lawn and think nothing of it. On this episode we'll be discussing two instances in which this actually happened. Both Rebecca Cade and Patricia Ward were brutally murdered and left on public display. Numerous passersby saw their corpses, believed them to be Halloween decorations, and scooted past without ever considering that they were looking at the scene of a homicide.

"The Three Wishes", a European tale that comes to us by way of The Brothers Grimm, is one of many stories dealing with the well-known motif of wishes coming true -- including "Aladdin", for instance. In this example, a rash and foolish waste of opportunities leads to regretful results in the end. (It reminds us of people who win the lottery but end up broke.) But in the process, we learn about a comical usage for a string of sausages. We discuss two places that demonstrate how wishes can come true, especially for smaller children: the Children's Museum of Indianapolis and COSI, the science museum in Columbus, Ohio. We drove through both of these cities this past week on our way to Pennsylvania, and we've spent a good many hours in both museums, particularly when Zephyr was younger. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is a four-floor affair, and has been called the largest children's museum in the world. Every Halloween, the museum mounts an imaginative haunted house, built around a different theme every year. This is where Zephyr got bitten by the haunted house bug (or was it a vampire?) at age 9.COSI, on the site of the old Columbus High School (the front facade of which is still preserved) is one of the biggest and best science museums in the country. But we liked it even better back when it featured "Adventure into the Unknown", the archeology-inspired (think Indiana Jones) interactive exhibit that sent kids and kids at heart scampering to uncover clues, solve riddles, and find the ultimate treasure -- which turned out to be some very useful advice on the art of problem-solving. It was all done in a very detailed, moodily lighted, inspiring atmosphere. Oh, why are we telling you all this when you can't go attend it anymore? Well, maybe you could pressure the museum to bring it back. And this, by the way, is our 50th podcast!
