Episode: 00322 Released on June 8, 2026 Description:  What happens when a newspaper reporter becomes a crime and intelligence analyst? In this episode of Analyst Talk, Abigail shares her unique journey from journalism and marketing into law enforcement analysis. She discusses how storytelling became one of her greatest analytical strengths, why qualitative data can be just as powerful as statistics, and what it was like building an analysis program from the ground up in an agency that had never had an analyst before. Abigail also discusses her work supporting child exploitation and human trafficking investigations, the growing threat of online extremist groups targeting children, peer support for first responders, and the importance of networking across the profession. Along the way, she offers practical advice on writing, communication, training, and finding opportunities to demonstrate value within an agency. The episode also features another entertaining installment of "Shit You Hear in the Office," including stories involving ceiling crawl spaces, office tomato farms, and analysts watching movies on their second monitor. Whether you are a new analyst, an experienced practitioner, or someone interested in the future of public safety analysis, Abigail delivers valuable insights on leadership, service, and making an impact through analytical work.

We're joined by St Columba Anglican School Principal Allan Guihot and Director of Professional Learning Chris Delaney. They're in Port Macquarie, on the New South Wales North Coast, and the school is a member of the award-winning Teaching School Hubs program from Independent Schools New South Wales (ISNSW). The program brings together schools and partner universities to provide teacher trainees with regular, mentored experience while they complete their qualification. The aim is to increase their skills and their confidence in the classrooms, so they're better prepared once they enter the workforce. It's a paid placement – trainees get paid for one day per week for a year, which is co-funded by ISNSW and the school. And then, depending on the arrangement, the trainee could also be working additional days as a Teacher Aide (that might be a Teaching Assistant or Classroom Support Assistant where you are), and that additional work is funded by the school, so that is something that St Columba has chosen to do. In our chat, Allan and Chris explain more about the program model and how it works, the school's participation, and the benefits for everyone involved – including those teachers doing the mentoring. SHOW NOTES Good Note: With low self-esteem from a young age, Chris always found himself in dead-end low paying jobs. Even landing himself a job paying 1£ an hour. Chris had a calling in life that he always wanted to help people but didn't know how to make income in doing so. It started by helping with youth groups and disabled people with activities which came naturally to him. Later being asked to become a forklift instructor for the company he worked for, because of the “magic whisper “ that helped anxious colleagues. Bad Note: Bad notes happen all the time. With that same forklift job, Chris had to go assess other company drivers. Along with that came writing which Chris had a hard time with being dyslexic. He managed to find a methods that helped him better understand spelling in a way that just made sense to him and enabled him to persevere. With new ways and perspectives, there is always a way. Practice makes Progress: It becomes a subconscious thing with a lot of practice. Life is like learning a musical instrument, you hit your bad notes until you become aware of what it is you're doing, and what can be done about it. Then the confidence in the subject will spread to different areas in your life. Momentum creates motivation. Instruments: All about asking right questions to get people to think in a certain way. Learning from the best: It doesn't always need to be a professional paid coach, it can be friends and family depending on who you surround yourself with. Reassurance is good but mentors will pick it apart and challenge you to grow. Mentors come in all different ways such as books, films, music, etc… Listen and reflect constantly. THE STORY Chris Delaney is an interview coach, hypnotherapist, and author of ‘what is your interview identity' Chris helps career professionals to succeed in job interviews.

"I view marketing, especially right now, as an octopus. The business is the head of the octopus and the arms are the different marketing tools and techniques that they can use. The absolute first thing the business must do is they must have a strategy; the head of the octopus."No one knows the impact of a pandemic on small businesses better than the hospitality industry. And no one knows the hospitality industry better than our guest, Roger Curlin. Roger gives us a candid look at the current state of the industry, where the industry is headed, and how restaurants can survive the transition. Listen to find out what Roger's 5 factors for survival in hospitality are and what the hell an octopus has to do with marketing. In this episode: Chris Delaney, Chris 'Jinx' Jenkins, Victor Bolivar, Roger Curlin ******* More about Roger Curlin: Late in 2016, a couple of local entrepreneurs, Jack Homsey and Roger Curlin launched a member-dining club in Pinellas. Club Savor's value for diners is simple: join the club and get half off an entrée and half off an alcoholic drink for the member and a guest – all day, every day, all over town. They've created a wide array of dozens of restaurants and bars that participate in the program. With over 1,400 members, the local vibe of what they created is undeniable, as Curlin explains, “Our goal is to create a value ecosystem, where customers are incentivized to spend locally within a vast range of amazing businesses.” They set monthly fees in the club at under $30 so members can recover their payment in one night out. Although it's exclusive and invite-only for businesses to get involved - restaurants, bars, and businesses are not charged a fee to be promoted. Club Savor also coordinates with dozens of local charities to help raise funds for their causes and participates frequently at local think-tank sessions and with civic outreach. It is five o'clock somewhere, and that means this is our Happy Hour episode. During Happy Hour we answer business questions from our community. UFMB is areligious and apolitical, but other than that, y'all nothing is off-limits. Some of the questions are deeply silly, some are deeply emotional, and some are deeply polarizing. But if you ask it, we'll answer it. Why do we do these happy hours? Because running a business is fucking hard. Why would you want to do that with people you don't like and can't have an unfiltered conversation with?! Surround yourself with people that know how to get shit done AND also know how to hang out and get silly. "I am a writer by passion at heart. At the core of everything I've ever done, writing has always been a part of my role. And this was the first opportunity that I had to actually make that my main function and turn it into a job. And what I learned in that experience is that tying your passion to a paycheck is not always the best mix." How do you take a product through the process from idea to execution in the midst of a global pandemic? With the help of your community! Get first-hand insights from Jackie and Donny Minchillo about how they built Pineapple Pickup in response to COVID-19's impact on their local restaurants and how the UFMB Community* supported their journey. More about Jackie & Donny: Jackie is a former corporate ladder climber with a background working for digital marketing and publicity agencies in Detroit and Chicago. In 2015 she and her husband decided to quit their corporate jobs, sell everything they owned and move to Costa Rica. Jackie spent 3 years covering Costa Rica for International Living Magazine and spent a lot of her time in Costa Rica on a journey of spiritual discovery and self-healing. During her "hiatus" in paradise, she developed the idea to expand her husband's freelance web development business into their co-founded eCommerce web development agency, Pineapple Development. Today she and her husband live in St. Petersburg, Florida where Pineapple Development has merged with local digital agency Big Sea. The Minchillo's are also the co-owners of residential and commercial cleaning company Joy of Cleaning, amongst various other business ventures. Writing has always been a passion of Jackie's and a part of everything she's ever done, and has lead to her latest endeavor, a life-long goal of publishing her first book: "Happy Pillz; 25 Tools to Overcome Overwhelm in Your Everyday Life Amidst Normalcy OR Chaos" available on Amazon.  Born in Brazil, Donny spent his teenage years in New York learning to speak English and plotting his American Dream. He studied computer arts and technology at Mercy College in New York and was always technically inclined. His interest was really sparked though when he decided to sell a faux fur coat he bought and never wore on eBay, and made money! Today Donny is an eCommerce expert with 15+ years of experience. Throughout his journey, he's touched every aspect of the industry from retail arbitrage and creating wholesale relationships as an omnichannel retailer, to being the merchant. He eventually became an E-commerce Director and then decided he wanted to "get his hands dirty" so to speak and became a Magento developer. He is the co-owner and CEO of Pineapple Development which he co-founded with his wife while they were living abroad in Costa Rica, and now he leads a team of the dev-iest developers to bring high-quality development services to merchants using the Shopify or Magento platforms or those in need of a custom web application to run their business. He is also the co-owner alongside his wife Jackie, of Joy of Cleaning in St. Petersburg, Florida, a residential and commercial cleaning company. In addition to multiple business ventures, Donny is a cryptocurrency enthusiast and early adopter. He's committed to accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment through any business that he owns ;-)  Connect with them: www.pineappledevelopment.com www.pineapplepickup.com ******* *NOTE: At the time of recording, the UFMB Community was still known as the CORE Leadership Collective.
