Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
My guest today is David Staley, associate professor in the Department of History at the Ohio State University, where he teaches courses in digital history and historical methods, and holds courtesy appointments in the Departments of Design where he is taught courses in design history and design futures, and the Department of Educational Studies where he has led the forum on the university. This is his fifth appearance on Historically Thinking, which means I owe him a coffee mug. He has previously been on with co-author Dominic Endicott to talk about their book Knowledge Towns; with Brent Orrell to talk about "The History of the Future"; explaining the beauties of historical context; and, in our very first conversation together, describing some potential Alternative Universities. This time we'll be talking about his book, Visionary Histories out for a few years now, available for free on Apple Books. In it David has written "twenty histories of the future"–originally essays in the Columbus Underground–which range from the future of artificial intelligence, to democracy, capitalism, education, and leisure. So this means that this will be at least the fourth time that David tries to convince me that historians have something to say about the future other than giving a shrug. In the 1930s, Ohio resident Anna Marie Hahn took the gateway crime of insurance fraud down a dark path of murder. She could not help charming people, convincing them to give her money in their will (think tens of thousands– and this is Great Depression money!), and then making sure that will was in play. We also visit another Ohioan on death row, Dovie Dean, who shared Anna's method of murder but not her motivation. Hear the story of both women and decide for yourself what really happened. #222. There's rarely a special edition soda that sneaks by us, and Coke's Y3000 and Mountain Dew Voodew are no exceptions. We recommend one and spit out the other. We then rush right into some light college football and NFL fantasy talk before hearing the epic of Kendall's Saturday including life-threatening danger and saving the children. Then it's the attack of the robots with spinning blades that could sever small plants. As long as we are on death defying stunts, we nod to the Columbus Underground and their tour of restaurants that we're all surprised still exist. On the back half, Kory has some incredible encounters with comedians and podcasters. One thing leads to another and nude drawings happened. In the land surrounding the North Market, there are bodies. “Any time you stick a shovel in the ground out there, you're gonna find somebody,” says one expert. As developers prepare to erect the 31-story Merchant Building, Columbus Underground reporter Jesse Bethea has been covering the removal of remains from what was once the North Graveyard, a site that pre-dates Columbus. Today, we discuss what is happening at the site, the work that should have been done 150 years ago, and the opportunity that Columbus has to look back at its history. I'm beyond excited to be talking today with the three authors of Bee Gees Decades, a new book series about our favorite Brothers Gibb. This first book, focusing on their lives and work in 1960s, will be available on November 12th across the world, December 17th here in the States, right in time for Christmas! The book “The Bee Gees In the 1960s” has left no stone unturned. In addition to getting to the bottom of all of the information they could about these tracks, sessions and albums, spanning multiple decades, the three authors have also created a narrative that will make you feel closer to The Bee Gees, and undoubtedly have a new perspective on the music, the story, and the legacy. Based in Wales, the United States, and Australia, respectively, Andrew Môn Hughes, Grant Walters & Mark Crohan have over fourteen decades of combined expertise and history tied to the Bee Gees' legacy between them, amassing a lengthy list of credits for their contributions to CDs, DVDs, books, tour programmes, articles, television documentaries, and official websites. In 2000, Andrew and Mark co-authored the expansive biography, Tales of the Brothers Gibb. Andrew's expert contributions can be seen and heard in a myriad of Bee Gees-related productions for the BBC, ITV, A&E, and VH1 networks. Mark, the foremost expert on the Bee Gees' Australian era gifted his collection to the Queensland Library in 2016. He contributed liner notes to the 1998 compilation Assault the Vaults. Grant is an award-winning freelance arts writer for Columbus Underground and Albumism, for which he has penned nearly 300 features since 2015. He is a prolific music interviewer, conversing with a diverse roster of artists including Dionne Warwick, Midge Ure, Melissa Etheridge, Edie Brickell and Bryan Adams. The business of news - how it's generated, how it's distributed and how it's consumed has changed exponentially in what seems like a very short time and it keeps changing. What used to be local TV stations and hundreds of local newspapers has morphed into countless television networks and, sadly, very few newspapers covering small town America. That was the topic of conversation at a recent luncheon at the Columbus Metropolitan Club. On this Our Ohio Weekly, hear from industry experts from print and broadcast about the changing landscape of news in a digital world. 00:00 - Alan Miller, Executive Editor for The Columbus Dispatch, Walker Evans, Co-Founder & CEO of Columbus Underground and Denise Eck, News Director for WCMH NBC4 talk about how their industry has been changing as the world becomes fully digital. 23:50 - "To the Beat of Agriculture", hear from the President of Ohio State's Collegiate Farm Bureau, Tyler Zimpfer, and why he is passionate about getting involved in ag, and getting others involved, at the college level. 32:20 - Ben Gammie, Ohio Apples Board President and 4th generation owner & grower of Quarry Hill Orchard, talks about the apple industry and how agritourism has faired over the past 18 months.

In this episode, your favorite momfriends continue the conversation on Black History Month by discussing black doulas. Often times, the idea of using a doula throughout a pregnancy, labor, and delivery seems more like a "luxury" rather than a necessity. And within the black community, many families may not even consider using a doula because they do not know the significance of the role of a doula or the services they provide. For this reason, Real Moms Too interviewed Jessica Roach, co-founder and the CEO of Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT). In episode 41, Jessica explains the history of black doulas, how to involve the whole family in the labor and delivery process, and teaches moms how to advocate for themselves throughout the pre and postnatal process. Jessica reminds listeners that black doulas have been around for centuries and discusses the benefits of utilizing a doula service such as ROOTT.More About our Guest:Jessica M. Roach, LPN, MPH is the co-founder and CEO of Restoring Our Own Through Transformation, (ROOTT) a Non-Profit, Black Women led Reproductive Justice Organization focused on Maternal Child Health and Birthing Justice Columbus, Ohio.
