This episode - in honor of Veterans Day - is about “84 Charlie MoPic”, the 1989 feature film about small unit operations during the Vietnam War, and our star-studded panel includes Director Patrick Duncan, Cinematographer Alan Caso and Producer Michael Nolin. Joining me as co-hosts are Jim Stayton and Al Gerloff, current friends and former colleagues from my pre-Hollywood days with Combat Camera. This conversation is one that my late father, himself a veteran of the Vietnam War, would have enjoyed very much, and it made for a really special episode. I hope you enjoy it.

Navy Veteran Andrew Bliss always wanted to work in the video production industry, but his journey wasn't straightforward. Before serving in the military, Bliss was an accomplished professional martial artist with over 10 years of experience coaching and mentoring students. Working as a martial artist eventually led him to the military. In the interview, Bliss talks about serving six years as a Navy broadcast journalist in Combat Camera at the Pentagon and his time directing and producing a feature film while on active duty in Italy before leaving the service. After creating a comfortable life for himself as a civilian, Bliss made the uncomfortable decision to sell all of his belongings, buy a motorcycle and make the long journey across America to the west coast. Bliss talks about why he chose not to take a differnet path to pursue his dream of working in the entertainment industry.Bliss discusses how he leapt from doing freelance and independent work to fulfilling his dream of working for a major entertainment company like Bad Robot Productions. He also talks about content creation, his current position, and how the framework he learned in the military helps him stay focused and grounded while working in Hollywood. Finally, he explains how important it is for Veterans to get involved with Veteran networking organizations, such as Veterans in Media & Entertainment, if they are interested in pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. In this episode, Bliss also talks about: What he learned from his experiences in the military. Earning a degree in Interactive Design at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The principles that have guided him during his military career and throughout civilian life. The fundamentals to being a part of any industry. Why it's important for Veterans to have insatiable curiosity and the courage to pursue their dreams. Today is Veterans Day, and, to honor the occasion, I've once again invited a panel of Combat Camera veterans to talk about their time in uniform. My guests - Jim Stayton, J.R. Cole, and Fred Johnson - reminisce with stories covering nearly 50 years of Combat Camera history . . . and still find time to laugh about the foibles of a certain L.T. for whom they once worked. Oh, and remember in 2008 when Air Force One flew over NYC at low altitude? We've got the inside scoop on that.
On today's show we welcome Jim Fabio, a extraordinary documentarian who has won multiple emmy awards while serving as a Colonel in the Air Force Reserve overseeing the Combat Camera unit. In this conversation, we talk about why Jim was inspired to attend the Air Force Academy, how a downsizing of the military in the 90s derailed his hopes of becoming a pilot in the Air Force but then led to his award winning career and we focus the spotlight on his short film: Orangeburg: A Town, A Team, and an American Tragedy Watch the film here https://vimeo.com/363417940 & then listen to the Pod!

Welcome to the Veteran Artist Highlight, brought to you by The Painted Buffalo Traveling Studio. Featuring interviews of veterans who have served their country and who also happen to be incredible artists. These conversations create a space for understanding, healing, and support for our veterans around the world, telling their own stories through art. Our first episode highlights my best friend Christopher Green. Green is a 10 year Marine Corps Veteran who spent part of his service as a Artillery Mechanic, 2131. While on deployment Green found the art of photography to not only tell the Marine Corps and Navy story but also have an escape from war time hospital work. Once home, Green made a lateral move into Combat Camera, 4641 and like we say... the rest was history. I can't wait for you to hear about Chris and his amazing journey to where he is today. As a boudoir photographer, he describes his love of photographing women, showing respect in the studio and making women see photographs of themselves as beautiful as they are. I'd like to note that Chris and I have known each other for a very long time, so I promise, the way I banter with him is just my love for him as a friend, a mentor, and an inspiration to me on a daily basis.. Karlos De La Cruz was raised in the Highbridge community of the Bronx, New York, Karlos De La Cruz is a first generation Dominican American. As an active hispanic youth in the Bronx, Karlos had an early appreciation for the arts as he learned American Freestyle Karate and Break Dancing. And with Domincan roots you already know Baseball was the favorite summer pastime. After attending High School at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, Karlos attended Saint John's University for a year before deciding to ship off to Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina in order to become a United States Marine. Karlos has since held multiple jobs as a Marine working Supply Administration, Combat Camera, and Drill Instructor, with various overseas stations and deployments to Okinawa, South Korea and Iraq. Anytime combat photographer Kevin Wallace was involved in a firefight, he often had a critical decision to make: shoot back at the enemy, or pick up his camera and take a much different shot. The decision could be painstaking, but Wallace knew the importance of documenting combat, while still trying to help those to his left and right. The process weighed on him so much that he spent hours and hours training himself so that he could flip from camera to weapon and back without thinking about it. This proved vital for one particular and pivotal battle, from which Wallace received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with valor while serving in Afghanistan. Wallace alternated between engaging the enemy and visually capturing the actions of his teammates with his camera, successfully documenting the battle, and helping to ensure he and his teammates made it back to base alive. The war documentary Combat Obscura shows us boredom, bullshitting, firefights and smoking hash. The footage came from the video that Marine Corps veteran and filmmaker Miles Lagoze shot while deployed in Afghanistan with Combat Camera. We talked with him about the incredible stories in the film and the friction it caused within the Marine Corps and the Pentagon before it was released.
Just out of high school, at the age of 18, Miles Lagoze enlisted in the Marine Corps. Lagoze was deployed to Afghanistan where he served as Combat Camera — his unit's official videographer, tasked with shooting and editing footage for the Corps’ recruiting purposes and historical initiatives. But upon discharging, Lagoze took all the footage he and his fellow cameramen shot, and he assembled quite simply the very documentary the Corps does not want you to see. COMBAT OBSCURA is a groundbreaking look at daily life in a war zone as told by the Marines themselves. More than a mere compilation of violence, the edit ingeniously repurposes the original footage to reveal the intensity and paradoxes of an ambiguous war from an unvarnished perspective. Director Miles Lagoze joins us to talk about his deployment in America’s longest war, adapting to a whipsaw life of boredom, camaraderie and death and training to become a filmmaker via the United States Marine Corp.
