One of my favorite things to discover on this podcast, is the way moving in a Vegan direction can open up your life. The practice of limiting and eliminating the use of animals as products can open up your awareness to what is happening all around us and how important our choices are. This week we find out what makes design “Vegan." What Makes a Design Firm “Vegan?" We know that being Vegan is not just what we eat, but what makes a business Vegan?  Our guests, Cayla Maki Pittman and Dave Pittman of Harmless.Studio in Maine, do design and marketing for people making the world better, with a focus on vegan and sustainable projects. The clue is in the name of their studio - Harmless. Not long ago there was more resistance among manufactures and retailers toward using the world “VEGAN." I still run into it, but in today's conversation with Cayla and Dave you get a sense of a new generation of businesses who are embracing the word as well as the ethos.   Cayla is an interactive designer and digital marketer. She studied Interactive Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Cayla also holds a certificate in management from Harvard Business School, and has been recognized by United Nations, the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Social Impact Strategy, and PETA. Dave is an award-winning interdisciplinary designer and former creative director at the multinational ad agency Y&R (Young & Rubicam). As a designer, he has worked for Fortune 100 companies, global NGOs, and everywhere in between. He is a certified vegan interior designer and holds a master's degree in industrial design also from the Rhode Island School of Design, where he also sometimes teaches. Cayla and Dave Pittman are the perfect team to introduce us to the concerns, opportunities and challenges of “designing while Vegan,” as they aim for sustainable and harmless. Find out more about Cayla and Dave Pittman at their website: https://harmless.studio. The book Dave mentions in our conversation is by Dutch artist Christien Meidertsm, Pig 05049.  https://christienmeindertsma.com/PIG-05049  Christine Meiderstma's fascinating TED talk about that project, How Pig Parts Make the World Turn is available to watch here:https://www.ted.com/talks/christien_meindertsma_how_pig_parts_make_the_world_turn?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare You may also be interested in our previous interview with Vegan Interior Designer Aline Dürr on July 11, 2023 - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/vedge-your-best/id1531858713?i=1000620710713 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Plant Based / Vegan Life Coaching.  If you've ever thought that avoiding or eliminating animal products would be a great idea, but you didn't know where to start, this Podcast is for you. Why do humans do the things they do? And what can we do to convince or persuade them to do the things that we like them to do [13:25] Often people confuse the finish line in the conversation with our customers. We anticipate the finish line is at one point when the reality is our customers see the finish line much later, and if we're not paying attention to where they think the finish line is, you're not going to have happy clients for the long-term. [18:45] We have to look at what's the most important to the audience that we're serving, what's most important to tenants and owners. A lot of times those little extra touches can go a long way towards making deposits to a bank account for when things go wrong. [22:50] If we don't address that in the relationship early on, that difference between our excitement that we got the deal, and the other side of the table which is fear, doubt, and uncertainty on how this relationship will work out. That gap only increases over time, so you have to do things to affirm the decision that they've made to work with us. Summary of BusinessDesign Symphony is a customer experience branding firm. J., Nunez-Iglesias, J., Poole, D. P., Tomancak, P., Myers, E. W. Abstract: Modern life science relies heavily on fluorescent microscopy and subsequent quantitative bio-image analysis. The current rise of graphics processing units (GPUs) in the context of image processing enables batch processing large amounts of image data at unprecedented speed. In order to facilitate adoption of this technology in daily practice, we present an expert system based on the GPU-accelerated image processing library CLIJ: The CLIJ-assistant keeps track of which operations formed an image and suggests subsequent operations. It enables new ways of interaction with image data and image processing operations because its underlying GPU-accelerated image data flow graphs (IDFGs) allow changes to parameters of early processing steps and instantaneous visualization of their final results. Operations, their parameters and connections in the IDFG are stored at any point in time enabling the CLIJ-assistant to offer an undo-function for virtually unlimited rewinding parameter changes. Furthermore, to improve reproducibility of image data analysis workflows and interoperability with established image analysis platforms, the CLIJ-assistant can generate code from IDFGs in programming languages such as ImageJ Macro, Java, Jython, JavaScipt, Groovy, Python and C++ for later use in ImageJ, Fiji, Icy, Matlab, QuPath, Jupyter Notebooks and Napari. We demonstrate the CLIJ-assistant for processing image data in multiple scenarios to highlight its general applicability. The CLIJ-assistant is open source and available online: https://clij.github.io/assistant/ Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Dr. Natalie Nixon: Accelerating Innovation with Rigor and Wonder

Businesses that thrive long-term continue to innovate, even when they are at the top of their game. If the Kodaks of the world don't disrupt themselves, someone else certainly will. So, the question becomes, how does an organization continue to drive growth and generate new ideas—even if there is no one in the rearview mirror? Dr. Natalie Nixon contends that the key to accelerating innovation lies in the ebb and flow between rigor and wonder. Dr. Nixon is the Founder and Principal at Figure 8 Thinking, a consultancy dedicated to helping organizations accelerate innovation by connecting the dots between creativity and strategy. A design strategist and hybrid thinker, she leverages her background in service design, anthropology and fashion to support clients in cultural transformation, leadership development, and team collaboration. Nixon is also a Fellow at the Paris d.School and a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, and she created the Strategic Design MBA program at Philadelphia University. Nixon is a frequent contributor to Inc. magazine, and she has been a featured speaker at the Business Innovation Factory, 360 Possibilities and The Copenhagen Institute for Interactive Design. Today, Nixon shares the connection between her background in anthropology and fashion, explaining how she sees the world from a ‘worm's eye view.' She discusses how her business, Figure 8 Thinking, evolved from a talk on improvising at work she delivered at TEDx Philadelphia in 2014. Nixon describes how companies can accelerate innovation by driving growth based on consumer needs, hiring from a non-traditional wheelhouse, and benchmarking progress against a wide variety of sectors. Listen in for Nixon's insight around kinesthetic learning and the balance between wonder and rigor.   Key Interview Takeaways Drive the growth of your business based on the needs of the consumer. Nixon contends that if you focus on the end-user, profitability, efficiency and productivity will follow. Ensure thought diversity by hiring from a variety of sectors. More diverse inputs result in more innovative outputs, so companies willing to hire anthropologists, psychologists and artists will naturally accelerate innovation. Benchmark your team against other sectors. Rather than simply making comparisons with others in your industry, Nixon suggests casting a wider net to determine what ‘best in class' really means. A superiority complex can be fatal. Nixon argues that companies like Kodak fail when they lose their curiosity. A false sense of security and resistance to change leaves a company ripe for disruption. Physical activity helps balance the mind. Nixon's recent return to the dance studio is fueling her creativity and outlook in a positive way. Rigor cannot be sustained without wonder. Corporate culture emphasizes structure and processes, but problem-solving only happens when we balance that rigor with the time to daydream—to pause and suppose.
