This field is key in understanding chronic diseases, how they develop, why some people are more predispositioned to get sick than others, and how they can be prevented with lifestyle and diet. They explain the static nature of genomics and contrast this with the dynamic nature of epigenetics. They also discuss the role of epigenetics in diseases like Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and Gulf War Illness. This conversation provides a new perspective on chronic illnesses, highlighting how epigenetic changes, influenced by our environment and choices, can significantly alter our health destiny. Key points: 00:00 Introduction 03:23 Exploration of the significant epigenetic component in chronic diseases. 08:06 Research on Gulf War Illness and Epigenetics. 12:01 The role of lifestyle and nutrition in epigenetic changes. 16:55 All body systems are interconnected. 20:07 Dr. Nathanson's vision for the future of medicine and chronic illness treatment. 23:24 The importance of considering the whole body in health and disease. A prominent condition affecting Gulf War Veterans is a cluster of medically unexplained chronic symptoms that can include fatigue, headaches, joint pain, indigestion, insomnia, dizziness, respiratory disorders, and memory problems. VA refers to these illnesses as "chronic multisymptom illness" and "undiagnosed illnesses." We prefer not to use the term “Gulf War Syndrome” when referring to medically unexplained symptoms reported by Gulf War Veterans. Why? Because symptoms vary widely. DEADLINE Under long-standing VA rules, any undiagnosed illnesses used to establish eligibility for VA benefits by veterans of the Persian Gulf War must have become apparent by Dec. 31, 2011. The new deadline adds five years, extending it to Dec. 31, 2016. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/vet2vet/support

Between the WWII vets that were near atomic bomb testing, the Vietnam and Gulf War veterans that were around chemicals, and Post 9/11-era veterans that were stationed near burn pits, millions of military personnel have been exposed to toxins that are causing them to suffer or die. These men and women do not have time for the VA's denials. They do not have time for politicians to play their games, or time for legislative efforts to be put on hold or overlooked. Changes are needed now. Care is needed now! The article by David Goldstein discussed in this episode was called "Nearly all VA claims for Gulf War Illness improperly denied" and it can be found at Thewarhorse.org.

She is a nutritional neuroscientist whose research examines the negative effects of food additives on neurological symptoms, as well as the positive protective effects of certain micronutrients on the brain. The main focus of her research is on glutamate, which is an excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. This becomes dysregulated in many neurologic conditions, including chronic pain, migraine, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. I enjoyed speaking with Kathleen on this topic, much of her research informs how we treat people with chronic pain by using nutrition and clinical practice. Without further ado, let's begin and let's meet Dr. Kathleen Holton. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! P. Abstract: Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic, multi-symptom disorder affecting approximately 30 percent of the nearly 700,000 veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Recent studies have revealed that GWI-related chemical (GWIC) exposure promotes immune activation and metabolic rewiring, which correlate with neurocognitive impairments and other symptoms of GWI. However, the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways linking GWIC to inflammation, metabolic alterations, and neurological symptoms remain unclear. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been documented in veterans with GWI and rodent models, and because mitochondria are key immune regulators, we hypothesized that alterations to mitochondria-immune crosstalk could contribute to the development of GWI-related symptoms. Here we show that acute exposure of murine macrophages to GWIC alters mitochondrial respiration and potentiates innate immune signaling and inflammatory cytokine secretion. Using an established mouse model of GWI, we report that neurobehavioral changes, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial protein rewiring are attenuated in mice lacking the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) and NOD-, LRR- or pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) innate immune pathways. Finally, we report sex differences in response to GWIC, with female mice showing more pronounced cognitive impairment, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial protein alterations in the brain compared to male mice. Our results provide novel information on sex differences in this model and suggest that STING and NLRP3 are key mediators of the cognitive impairment, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction observed in GWI. Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh. There was a pause. "Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet. "No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do." "That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend. "What are you doing?" asked Pooh. "Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either. But, goodness, Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh." And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right. --------- Our veterans have many Difficult Days. These difficulty could be a result of Gulf War Illness. Let's talk about that in today's episode of Let's Talk Dementia. Write me at carol@letstalkdementia.org .
We celebrate this Memorial Day with the story of a military caregiver whose husband returned from active duty alive but mentally wounded. Jill Armijo's husband, Joe, served in the Navy as a machinist and was deployed to a ship in the Persian Gulf just before Operation Desert Storm. A gentle, generous man, Joe returned from the Gulf War paranoid and with delusions of grandeur. For the past 20 years, his greatest battle has been schizophrenia. Although the medical community eventually recognized Joe's condition as Gulf War Illness, Jill says the VA wasn't much help when he came back from the Gulf and most doctors didn't know what to do with him. Jill talks about the pressure of caring for Joe while holding down a job for her entire family, and how her sons saved the marriage and was patient with Joe while she often lost her cool. She provides vivid examples of Joe's behavior, offers coping tools for other caregivers and tells us how she stopped trying to cure Joe and learned to love him just as he is. Jill is currently working on a book about her family's journey called, "Home of the Unknown Soldier: How Coming Back Became the Other Ultimate Sacrifice."To purchase a transcript of this episode please visit this page: TranscriptsExplore Jill's work and caregiving tools: Jill ArmijoConnect with Jill on Facebook | Instagram: @jarmiji1962 | Email: jilldawnarmijo@gmail.comSubscribe to The Agewyz Podcast: iTunesGot a story to share? See background information at www.commonthreadpodcast.com/washington-dc. Adrian Atizado is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War. He has spent the last 17 years working for Disabled American Veterans, a veterans service organization (VSO) dedicated to advocating for veterans injured during their service. After recounting his path to his current position––Deputy National Legislative Director––he helps us deconstruct the history and role of VSOs in Washington DC, dating back to the First World War. He then helps us understand in more specific terms some of the legislative fixes he sees as necessary to making the system work better for our former service members. We also address Gulf War Illness, a difficult-to-diagnose condition observed in veterans of that war that is often difficult to claim benefits for.
Gulf War Illness is a chronic condition that affects nearly 25% of the 70,000 veterans of the first Gulf War. This multi-symptom disorder often includes other comorbid medical diagnoses such as chronic fatigue, IBS, PTSD and more. Despite the number of people affected, to date there has been no standard of treatment. This study examines acupuncture as a potential treatment for this condition.
In this fantastic episode of Military Resource Radio, your host Tony Gatliff sits down with longtime friend, and fellow BBMC Mortgage Vice President of Mortgage Lending – Paul Zbair. Lisa Conboy is a health researcher who has worked with Harvard and New England School of Acupuncture. She is involved in a study funded by the Army to examine how acupuncture can treat Gulf War Illness symptoms. For background, in 2008, the Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses concluded, “The extensive body of scientific research now available consistently indicates that Gulf War illness is real, that it is the result of neurotoxic exposures during Gulf War deployment, and that few veterans have recovered or substantially improved with time.” That’s a hell of a long time to suffer. We’re talking 1990-1991. "Gulf War illness is typically characterized by a combination of memory and concentration problems, persistent headaches, unexplained fatigue and widespread pain, and may also include chronic digestive problems, respiratory symptoms and skin rashes." The study is free of charge to Gulf War vets and includes four to six months of customized treatment. They provide a modest travel stipend and use local acupuncturists to make it easier to participate. One of those acupuncturists is my brother Mark. He joined us in-studio to tell us about Chinese Medicine and what study participants can expect.
