Sent us text! We would love to hear from you! The phrase, “float like a butterfly….sting like a bee”, is touted as the second most recognized saying in the modern world, courtesy of Drew Bundini Brown and espoused publicly by his protégé, Muhammad Ali. Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida was touted as the Cradle of Naval Aviation to legions of Navy pilots for almost seventy years. This indoctrination into this specialized branch of the U.S. military is unique to the piloting world, and perhaps best illustrated in the blockbuster movie, “An Officer and a Gentlemen”. Even though the filmmakers took great literary license in making a compelling video by skewing reality, they managed to capture some of the essential elements of the experience faced by Dr. Paul and Commander Drew. What is a Poopie? The short answer is, “the lowest form of life known to man”, that is according to our U.S. Marine Corps drill instructors. As a Poopie, long before he became Commander Drew, this somewhat carefree native New Yorker was molded into a Naval Officer who stood ramrod straight and learned to pay particular attention to detail in all aspects of life. One of the most interesting aspects of water survival training is the ability to extricate oneself from a submerged aircraft. The Dilbert Dunker for fixed wing airplanes and its close cousin, the helo-Dunker for helicopters, are the contraptions used for this lifesaving training, a maneuver which no one ever wants to do in real life. At the completion of Navy Aviation Officer Candidate School and official commissioning as a Navy Ensign, it was common practice to present one's Marine Corps Drill Instructor with a single silver dollar as an expression of gratitude for the life-changing training provided by this unrelenting task master. Commander Drew's transformation was so dramatic he, give his Drill Instructor not one, but two silver dollars; one for himself and another in the memory of his father, long before Drew-senior came up with his famous quote. After becoming a Naval Officer, actual flight school became another type of initial training, that could be as tough as what had been done on the ground. This “boot camp in the air” was significantly tougher than the indoctrination from the drill instructors on dry land. This was particularly true for those who had no prior flying experience. The intensity of the flight training required combinations of intellect, toughness and perseverance, all of which would be rigorously tested before flying solo….and most especially in preparation for the ultimate test of a new Navy Pilot…..landing on a floating ship at sea, which was the culmination of everything that had been done leading up to this seminal event.

In April of 1956, a platoon of Marine Recruits were being put through the paces at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island. On a fateful Sunday, some of the recruits were trying the patience of their Drill Instructor, which was ill advised. Diciplinary corrections were doled out, but unfortunately the discipline resulted in mutiple fatalities.
What kind of a reaction should you hit your Drill Instructor in basic training? Is it possible for an Army guy to enjoy a hot meal in a deployed location? Find out, the answers to these questions and more on this weeks "sode" of The Cammo Comedy Show Podcast! If you have any funny military stories of your own that you would like to share, drop us a line at:stories@cammocomedy.com or Leave a voicemail at (531) 222-6146 Sadly, the voicemail will only record in 2 minute blocksWe are here to make you laugh, but behind this there is the imbedded philosophy of, "No One Left Behind." Sadly, 22 vets per day commit suicide, approximately 67,500 vets are homeless and thousands struggle with everyday life after service. What we hope to accomplish is providing a fun place to gather that will have a similar feel to the conversations that happen at the VFW or American Legion between vets. Since the latest generations of vets are not really going to these places anymore, we are making it happen online. We believe that the sense of community will help some who struggle, while providing stories about the good times that we can all laugh at!An additional part of this show is capturing the oral history of the military over the past few decades, so if you happen to know a veteran who served during WW2, Korean War or Vietnam eras, we would love to hear from them. Obviously, we want to hear stories from all eras, but we have special respect for the older generations.

The nightmare story of a notorious boy's “school” that went from bad to downright horrific when a sadistic “Drill Instructor” and his attack dogs was hired to “really fix those damn kids.” Then he moved to another program in Alabama that was even worse. But then, a student escaped and came back to get his pound of flesh……Aaaaaa, revenge is soooo sweet.
This week's incredible guest – Mike Ettore – knows the way, and shows the way. Being the exceptional leader that he is, Mike became the youngest Drill Instructor in the Marine Corps at the age of 20. There's not a personal or professional challenge he can't overcome. Mike's effective combat leadership style resulted in numerous awards and decorations during his career, including the Bronze Star Medal for Valor (with Gold Star denoting 2nd award) and the Combat Action Ribbon (with two Gold Stars denoting 2nd and 3rd awards). These days, his purpose is to teach, coach, and help leaders develop - while he's alive and after he's gone. In this episode you will hear: I graduated from my first recruit platoon when I was 20. The Marine Corps trusted me and I tried very hard to live up to that trust. I spent my whole career trying to live up to the legacy of the Marines in World War I. If there's something the Marine Corps does well is it teaches and honors its history and traditions. We were considered by the battalion commander, to be the strongest lieutenant/staff sergeant team in the battalion. It's all about trust I was more excited about being an equally good leader in business as I was in the Marine Corps. Pre 9-11, I was dragging an AR-15 in a case through the airport. I was a C-level officer in charge of most of the back office of the non-sales function for a billion-dollar company, with no expertise in any of it. I wasn't really sure how to save a file. I teach and coach senior executives in the art & science of leadership. I'm 65 years old and have unlimited energy. I just love it. At 65 years old, with over 45 years of teaching leadership, I still learn something every week. I ask myself: ”How in the hell have I gone this long and never heard that?” I am vain enough that to think that 25, 50, 80 years from now - if somebody picks my book up, the Iwo Jima lessons, the Grenada lessons, and the business lesson I've learned, just might help out my great, great-grandson or daughter, who never met me. [In life] I was mostly right, somewhat wrong, or completely full of shit [Conversation with son] just because it comes out of my mouth doesn't automatically mean that it's bullshit. As you get older, you're gonna find yourself becoming me. Dale Carnegie: “A man who dies rich dies disgraced.” I'm never gonna have Andrew Carnegie money, but I've got a laptop and a thumb drive. Everything that's up here [in my head] is gonna be out.

I wrote this poem in Marine Corps Boot Camp. I was deeply touched on the first Sunday as we stood at attention by our footlockers while my Drill Instructor read off the times and places of the different religious services. I fought, to no avail, to keep the tears from streaming down my face as I contemplated the significance of that moment. Our near peer adversary, China, is seeking to destroy diversity of thought and belief. Currently, pictures of Christ are being burned and replaced with pictures of the Chinese supreme ruler, and 350 concentration camps are filled with 1-3 million Uyghur Muslims who are being “re-educated.”The fact that we can believe whatever we want, especially while serving in the armed forces, is not only a right, but a privilege. I love The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I love the United States Constitution, and I love being a Marine. Enjoy the poem.BLOOD, FREEDOM, SALVATION What good is His Gospel if it can't be read? What good is His word if it can't be said? The Bread of Life hidden by the tyrant's hand; Thus, a covenant people need a covenant land.Remember, the blood of thousands established this free nation,So that the blood of One may bring salvation. One nation under God radiates an abundance of light,But only the naive would say that we have finished the fight. For the fallen star seeks to pull down the rest,As he stirs up the hearts of armies and navies and false priests who oppress. With the Lord on our side, the war can only be won,Yet, we need more righteous men and women to get the job done. Now, who has the courage to answer the call? For it is the sacrifices of a few that bring freedom for all.
