It has been said that festivals are one of the best things about our community. By extension, the folks who conceive and orchestrate them are making the city measurably better. This week, on the occasion of the upcoming Hot Times Festival, organizer Candy Watkins discusses the origins of Comfest, why Hot Times Community Festival is the friendliest festival in town, and the importance of leaning in to ensure that these festivals continue to thrive. My guest today is Kenny McDonald, third president and CEO of the Columbus Partnership, a civic organization of our city's top business leaders. His current day-to-day environment varies greatly from his early childhood experience, living on a ranch in Eastern Montana – which sounds like an episode straight out of Yellowstone. This small town upbringing, and his achievements playing team sports, shaped the man, and the leader, he is today. In this episode, we learn how he's translated those qualities to his career work as a community builder. In fact, he tells us of a recruiting trip he took here just before the Columbus Partnership came to be, where he and his family were introduced to the city on ComFest weekend – an important city event that just celebrated its 50th anniversary this past weekend in Victorian Village. I ask Kenny about how his role has changed, both after taking over as CEO, and since the beginning of our current period of social and economic upheaval. We also unpack the perfect circumstances, and incredible teamwork by hundreds across the region, it took to land the Intel development project for our city. Kenny's voice and perspective on the true viability and cultural health of Columbus is second to none. Even, and especially, as the larger civic foundation shakes under our feet, he and the community leaders he's taken on the role of “coach” for, represent as good a shot as any we have at coming out the other side as a stronger, more united people. The only thing we can do now is come together. I'm proud to be part of Kenny's team and excited to share this important episode with you this week. What Brett asks: Kenny's early childhood on a sheep ranch Prioritizing sports over academics Embracing leadership roles Cultural experience going to grad school in the South Getting into economic development Gaining a global perspective and building a network Moving from Charlotte to Columbus Hope for the future To learn more about intentional living, and for the complete show notes, visit: http://brett-kaufman.com/ (brett-kaufman.com) Resources: https://columbuspartnership.com/ (Columbus Partnership) https://columbusregion.com/ (One Columbus) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kennymcdonald/ (Kenny McDonald) Gravity is produced and published by http://crate.media/ (Crate Media).

GrassRoot Ohio with Michael Doody and Emily Frechette, founder and organizers to save Kossuth Street Garden in Columbus Ohio. Why would the city of Columbus want to zone away the right for a well established-15 years old community garden to exist? What are these folks are doing to Save it? Michael Doody is a Life long resident of Columbus. He's lived in his house near the Kossuth Street Garden since 1996. He graduated in Journalism from OSU and has volunteered with Comfest, Hot Times Community Festival, for progressive candidates and is currently the block watch coordinator for Southern Orchards, bringing good dialogue between the Columbus Police Department and nearly 4,000 people in Southern Orchards. He is Founder/Director of Kossuth Street Garden and in 2007 he helped re-start Earth Day Columbus - and that first year's theme was “Start A Community Garden" which they did. Emily Frechette is the Kossuth Street Garden manager, along with her husband. She grew up near Dayton Ohio and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a double major in Environmental Studies and Creative Writing. They moved to the Southern Orchards area in 2012, lived and worked on a 1-acre microfarm near Deshler Park for several years, moved to another area of town and volunteered at KSG, then moved back to Southern Orchards in 2016 when they bought their house, which is right across the street from KSG - the reason they moved here. In 2018 Emily was elected President of the Central Ohio Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, a national conservation group. Kossuth Street Garden is a one acre organic community garden located at E Kossuth Street and S. 17th Street - just south of Nationwide Children's Hospital and just east of German Village. https://www.facebook.com/KossuthStreetGarden Write: Nicole Harper- Council Person Priscilla Tyson's assistant at: nnharper@columbus.gov & please cc: kossuthgarden@gmail.com when you do. ComFest is one of the largest events Three Cranes Grove, ADF, does all year. It's a local music/beer/arts/hippie festival here in Columbus, Ohio, and our Grove hangs out to meet people and enjoy the summer (or roast in its heat, depending on who you talk to). There's not another generally public event where we see quite so many people who fit squarely into the "target audience" of modern Druidry. Part of what makes this event interesting is that in seeing so many people, we have to condense down what "Our Own Druidry" is, and several of us have developed an "elevator pitch" to describe Druidry in about 30 seconds or so. Today, you'll hear us call on several Grove Members, our two ADF Priests, and the Heartland Regional Druid to give their short description of 3CG, ADF, and modern Druidry. Guests giving their Druidic elevator pitches are (in order of appearance): Shawneen, Corbin, Midnight, Michael, Thexalon, Jan. Find us on Facebook, check out threecranes.org/podcast, and learn more about modern Druidry at adf.org.

Who were you in high school? Did you hang out back with the hoods, or have practice every day as a jock? Was it prepping for college that drove you, or just trying to survive while navigating a tough domestic life? Did you have a friend, teacher, or coach that affected you? Are we doomed to accept the stereotypes tendered by others? What can we learn from this study of “The Breakfast Club” with Jeff Tayama? We might find, just maybe, “each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal.” Jeff Tayama and I met 19 years ago on that same live tv show I have mentioned so many times. At the start, it was live at 7:00 am, so Jeff and gang showed up in pajamas. The band, Cleopatra Grip, literally played in their underwear, providing humor and levity to live broadcasting pressure. Since then, Jeff and I have seen each other at Comfest and other concert venues. I have seen him play guitar several times with various artists. His sound is true and comes from the heart. His choice of film is special to me on numerous levels. Take the hour long journey into 1985 as Jeff Tayama reveals how the movie “The Breakfast Club” moved him. TC

Starburst Media is a digital marketing company that specializes in working with small businesses on their website, copywriting and social media needs. Laura discusses topics including: The business of digital marketing "There's really not any predictability, which is something that I thrive on, the constant stress of what might pop up day to day. That's something that I really like about having my own small business." The changing nature of a small business: "When I started I thought it was just going to be copywriting and social media because that's what I had all the experience in. But every single business that came to me and that I talked to, they all wanted help with their websites. Every small business needed even the simplest website." Helping other small businesses: "At the very beginning the whole goal was to be able to help people like my parents, both of whom own their own small businesses. The big issue that they had was they would want a website but developers would charge them a ton and not be willing to help them when they needed to make small changes. So what I wanted to do was come up with a way to basically empower these small business owners to make changes themselves." Listen to find out about the first website Laura made, for which she got paid in bacon, and how she and her husband fell in love with Columbus during a visit on ComFest weekend. I was joined by 100% of the 2-person improv comedy troupe Easily Amused - Kristen Howell & Mike Weaver. Finally, I learned the true history of one of the oldest troupes in Columbus. And we talked about how well Jesus would fit in at Comfest.
We are live at 4th Street Bar and Grill to talk with our friends in Zoo Trippin' about there first time performing at Comfest.
