It's a different kind of road trip this week, as we learn all about the Juneteenth holiday and talk with a variety of guests about different places around Michigan that hold special significance for African American history and culture. Juneteenth marks the final emancipation of slaves during the Civil War, on June 19 in Galveston Texas. Today, it is a day of celebration and education. We kick off the show with Chris Grier, who shares with us both the history and significance of the Juneteenth holiday. Grier is the historian for Idlewild, located near Baldwin, and known as the "Black Eden of Michigan. He was both born and raised at this special spot, and his grandfather was one of the founding members. We discuss the importance of Idelwild to it's members, and to the community as a whole. We also discuss how a certain movie brought attention to Idelwild's history, but also completely got the location wrong. Idlewild is in Michigan, not Georgia! Then, we meet with Cynthia Jones, who is the Director of Museum Experiences at The Henry Ford in Dearborn. Did you know that the bus that Rosa Parks sat down in and helped galvanize the Civil Rights Movement is right here? You can even climb on to experience history firsthand. We talk about why items of cultural significance are so important, and how The Henry Ford has integrated it into their exhibit "With Liberty and Justice for All".Annie Kelly from the Calhoun County Visitors Bureau stops by and we discuss the long history the Underground Railroad had in this part of Michigan. Known as a safe stop for escaped slaves, usually on their journey to Canada and freedom, Calhoun County, which includes Battle Creek, Marshall and Albion, now boasts several tributes to this time in history. We talk about the Underground Railroad memorial that you can experience here, as well as a 12-foot-tall statue of activist Sojourner Truth, who ended up calling Battle Creek her home for the last decades of her life.We close out this special show with Dr. David Pilgrim of Ferris State University. He is one of this country's leading experts on issues relating to multiculturalism, diversity, and race relations, and is the founder and curator of the Jim Crow Museum. The museum uses objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and promote social justice and has over 20,000 artifacts. It's a difficult topic, but one that is very important to study and learn from. Dr. Pilgrim has personally collected most of the collection and has developed a traveling exhibit so more people can experience it. He is also working on a permanent spot to house the collection on Ferris' campus. How would your life be different if you couldn't drive a car? If once a week, a steamship arrived at the dock with supplies to keep you going for the next week? If your husband and the father of your children came home on "The Daddy Boat" once a week? Cynthia Jones Meets The Union Steamship at 1 AM tells of a much simpler time on the Sunshine Coast - when anyone could go out in a sabot and grab a fish with her bare hands, when hospitals were miles from each other, when most lived in float houses by the light of a kerosene lamp.

Watch the video: https://youtu.be/O4F2HJjrNdA Last year, I collaborated with Cynthia Jones, Artistic Director of Inspirata Dance Project, for the upcoming dance production Inspirata Dance Project Presents: "Koinonia". The purpose of this collaboration was to highlight the perspectives and stories of individuals that have settled in the Twin Falls, Idaho region as refugees from their home countries. In total, Cynthia and I recorded three interviews with three incredible women: Samra Culum, Milica Popović, and Liyah Babayan. Audio segments from each of these interviews will be featured in the upcoming dance production KOINONIA, which will be presented at the College of Southern Idaho Fine Art Auditorium May 23-25 at 7:30pm. If you are in the Southern Idaho/Magic Valley area, please come! Tickets are $15 at the door, and can be purchase online at https://idpkoinonia.brownpapertickets.com Each of these collaborative interviews were released as episodes for the Last Born In The Wilderness podcast. In this video, I explain what brought about this collaboration with Cynthia Jones, what it was like to speak with these incredible women, and for each of us to listen and document their life stories. I present some information on the upcoming dance production KOINONIA, and at the end of the video I present some short segments from each of the interviews we conducted with Samra, Milica, and Liyah. Down below, there will be links to each of the episodes I released with these women, if you wish to listen to the full interviews with them. Samra Culum is Student Development Coordinator at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI), and a refugee. Her story was featured in episode #95 “Our Humanity In Times Of Peril: War, Community, & Revisiting Trauma.” Listen: http://bit.ly/KOINONIAsamra Milica Popovic is an Associate Professor of Art at the College of Southern Idaho. Milica discusses her personal experiences with the social and economic disintegration in her home country of Serbia, during the fracturing of the Republic of Yugoslavia in the 1990's. Liyah Babayan describes what her, and her family, experienced as Armenians during the Baku Pogrom - a horrendous act of mass violence perpetuated against the Armenian population in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. In particular, Liyah discusses how this experience profoundly impacted her development as an individual, having to bear the weight of indescribable trauma through adolescence and into adulthood - all while living as a refugee in the United States, with all the social pressures, barriers, and freedoms that come with that. In the late 80’s and into the early 90’s, a pogrom was enacted against ethnic Armenians in the city of Baku (the nation’s capital and Liyah’s place of birth), as well as in surrounding areas, resulting in the expulsion, and mass murder, of thousands of Armenians - in what has been described as the Baku Pogrom: “From January 12, 1990, a seven-day pogrom broke out against the Armenians civilian population in Baku during which Armenians were beaten, tortured, murdered, and expelled from the city. There were also many raids on apartments, robberies and arsons. According to the Human Rights Watch reporter Robert Kushen, ‘the action was not entirely (or perhaps not at all) spontaneous, as the attackers had lists of Armenians and their addresses.’” (Source: http://bit.ly/2u4on5H) Liyah Babayan is a local entrepreneur, activist, Armenian refugee, and the owner of Ooh La La! consignment boutique (http://oohlala-shop.com) in Twin Falls, Idaho. For this episode, Cynthia Jones and I speak with Liyah Babayan - local entrepreneur, business owner, activist, and Armenian refugee. In this conversation, Liyah goes over her life story - framing it within the cultural/historical/political framework of her home country of Azerbaijan, where she had spent much of her early childhood, before fleeing with her family from severe persecution and mass genocide. According to the Human Rights Watch reporter Robert Kushen, ‘the action was not entirely (or perhaps not at all) spontaneous, as the attackers had lists of Armenians and their addresses.’”* Liyah describes what her, and her family, experienced as Armenians during this horrendous act of mass violence perpetuated against the Armenian population in Baku. In particular, Liyah discusses how this experience profoundly impacted her development as an individual, having to bear the weight of indescribable trauma through adolescence and into adulthood - all while living as a refugee in the United States, with all the social pressures, barriers, and freedoms that come with that. Because of Liyah’s unique perspective, she is able to perceive and understand social and political trends within the United States that most people, particularly U.S. citizens, are unable to recognize. We discuss what those trends are, and how much they resemble, or don’t resemble, the social and political conditions experienced in her home country of Azerbaijan. We discuss the trauma that has been inflicted upon the Armenian people over the past century, and how this knowledge informs Liyah’s perspective of what it means to live in United States, in time and place we find ourselves in. This is a wide-ranging discussion, and I thank Liyah for her candid and articulate overview of the subjects discussed in this episode. This is the third episode in a series of interviews and conversations with individuals who, whether they officially or not fall under the category, are refugees. In this episode, Cynthia Jones and I speak with Milica Popovic, Associate Professor of Art at the College of Southern Idaho. Milica discusses her personal experiences with the social and economic disintegration in her home country of Serbia, during the fracturing of the Republic of Yugoslavia in the 1990's. Milica describes how her and her husband left their home country and made their way to the United States, where Milica eventually settled in Twin Falls, Idaho, and took up a position at the College of Southern Idaho, where this interview was conducted. In this episode, Milica also discusses the impact trauma has had on her art, and how producing art has helped her work with the traumatic memories she carries with her to this day. I would like to thank Milica for being open and sharing her experiences for the episode. I understand it is a difficult thing to discuss these things with others, particularly when it's being recorded and put online for the world to hear. So, I'm very grateful for those that have been willing to talk with Cynthia and I for this project. Too many people are suffering in silence says Cynthia Jones. Each of us have different struggles but the will to survive is in all of us, although sometimes it is a bit hard to muster up, yet it will emerge, just allow it to. Surviving four open-heart surgeries was the greatest battle of her life. Out of ‘commission’ for many years the second major battle was finding her way back into the ministry and business, which meant basically starting over again. Often overcoming big challenges can open up new doors because you see things differently. You are refreshed and have a good story to tell, with an unrelenting determination to succeed. This was the case with Cynthia Jones, an author and preacher. Throughout this podcast Cynthia talks about how strong we all are, surprisingly so and by being tenacious you can move forward mentally and physically. In fact you want to say goodbye to being tired and unwell. And you can. No one can do that for you; you need to do it within you or even with the help from your own mental cheerleader. After a tough phase in life, it’s a time when people often turn to creating, and for Cynthia writing her first book ‘Destined Even Though You've Been Delayed,’ was her creative outlet. You can learn more here: cee-jayministries.org An inspirational book she wanted to inspire others to find the strength within to overcome any adversity. As well, her book also encourages people to go after their dreams without fear, by staying focused on where they are going, and importantly NOT where they've been. Filled with famous quotes, Cynthia says, as long as you're still breathing, your destiny is still within your reach.

All of the tracks were written by Jones, and she's willing to share a piece of herself with the listener so that you can check out her mind as well as understand her heart. “Journey of Soul” is a nice intro into the album; it's a smooth neo-soul groove that could have easily been released in 1998. You instantly feel the love from the mood Jones sets and it continues with “Unconditional,” another mellow track. Jones switches gears and steps up the pace with electro/R&B “Universal Praise,” a club jam that will surely get people dancing and praising at the same time. The album has a strong Badu influence, but Jones steps out of the neo-soul box to give you cuts like “Revival,” a pure contemporary gospel track, and “Happy Birthday,” which is steeped in contemporary jazz.
