I shouldn't have to say anything about this weeks guest. His back catalogue of releases and the forthcoming ones speak for themselves. He's a bonafide American legend. Seeing him releasing on proper UK dnb labels with a career spanning decades now has always been really inspiring for me. He's a low-key OG and a badboy selector. Please welcome Jaybee. With releases on Liquid V, Chronic, Mac II, Good Looking, Innerground,Rubik, and a slew of other labels his music keeps going from strength to strength. Born to a radio DJ father he was raised listening to slew of different music genres that led him to hip hop and later on, drum and bass. Always fascinated with watching the dj's in hip hop videos, Jaybee obtained his first set of turntables at the age of 13 and started playing hip hop. A few years later he was intrigued by a friends "techno" compilation and wore out the hit the decks megamix series tape and found his love in breakbeats which led him to a outlaw Jungle party thrown by Digital Konfusion. It was at this event that Jaybee first discovered Jungle while witnessing DJ ODI double set ray Kieth's "terrorist", discovering it was possible to incorporate hip hop skills into Jungle. Flash forward 20 years and you can find him djing a weekly show on bassdrive.com every other Sunday from 10AM to 12PM EST. or in the studio working on whatever idea may roll through his head that day. His music is currently getting support by the likes of Bryan Gee, LTJ Bukem, Marky, D Bridge, A-Sides, PFM and Random Movement amongst a host of others. Tracklist below. For this episode of the Telekom Electronic Beats podcast we turn our focus towards two driving forces in the contemporary UK Drum & Bass scene, namely DJ Flight and Mantra. DJ Flight is widely recognised as a pioneering artist in the D&B scene and was the first woman to host a radio show focused on the genre with the The Next Chapter on BBC Radio 1Xtra. On top of this she's held down residencies at Metalheadz and Swerve, collaborated with Breakage and Redeyes and runs her own label Play:Musik. Mantra, alongside partner Double O, also found her way into the spotlight through her highly acclaimed Rupture events which over the past 12 years has welcomed the likes of D-Bridge and Doc Scott amongst many others, the club nights accompanying label has also released material from Forest Drive West, Coco Bryce and more and Mantra's own productions have garnered widespread support from many leading figures in the field. Throughout the podcast our host Lindi Delight discussed the pair's EQ50 initiative which endeavours to bring a more equal representation within the genre, while also offering mentorship for women and non-binary people. The three also discuss the history of Drum & Bass, Tokenism and how everyone in the industry can help bring more balance and diversity to the electronic music scene in general. Following the success of the all Evolve affair we are back this month with another special show to mark our 80th outing. This month joined by legendary MC, Fokus. Having emerged onto the scene in the early 00's, based in Hertfordshire, Fokus has been building his reputation locally, nationally and internationally for over 20 years. We first met on Hertfordshire's Impact FM around 2000/1. We were also lucky enough to acquire his talents for our Drum Project events. From his time on Origin FM, to London events like Traffic, Renegade Hardware and the legendary Therapy Sessions, Fokus has been learning his craft well. I was lucky enough to watch him at his best at the Sofa Sound event in Bristol in September 2019, he was absolute class. As you can see from his discography, versatility is key. Fokus is at home on a deep rolling beat as he is on the toughest and darkest of drums. Right from his first release in 2011 to now his choices for collaboration are important to him. A long standing partnership with show favourite label, Dispatch Recordings, has been a constant exemplified by last year's release of his solo release the massive ‘Frequencies EP'. Now working with other artists including DLR, Black Barrel, Dub Head, DBR UK, Tephra & Arkoze, Bredren and Ben Soundscape. He has said… “I think it's important for an MC in the Drum and Bass scene to evolve with the music and avoid the clichés. I like spending time on my written rhymes, but I also try to freestyle as much as possible. It's more spontaneous and the crowd can really vibe off it. For me, a radio show is the perfect environment to chat about some deeper rhymes, as people can hear every word and appreciate the story or message within the lyrics”.
