Send us a textIn Episode 281, I have the pleasure of conversing with Dani Zoldan, Owner of Stand Up NY. Dani has been a serial entrepreneur since he was 19 years old. While in college, he founded the online music company Eargazmic.com, which was a website where independent bands and musicians promoted and sold their music. In 2008, he purchased Stand Up NY, the famous comedy club, which recently moved from the Upper West Side to Time Square. Stand Up NY became popular with many of the world's best comics, including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Louis CK and Jon Stewart. We speak about meeting at Aleeza Ben Shalom, the famous Netflix Jewish matchmaker's event, the reasons for comedy, alternatives to showcases, the behind the scenes of running a comedy club, chutzpah, The Chosen Comedy Festival, improvisation in chess and comedy and more.
Afghani superstar comedian Siar Mateen tells the harrowing story of how one year ago, he and his family escaped sure death at the hands of the Taliban in Kabul on multiple occasions and somehow got out of Afghanistan alive. From the moment Joe Biden made it clear to the world that he was pulling all US Troops out of Afghanistan, Siar's life as a pro-women, pro-freedom, forward thinking celebrity and host of the wildly popular TV program Shabake Khanda, changed. For his views, he was now a wanted man by The Taliban, and death would be his fate if they could catch him. From mid-August until October 2021 Siar and his family were hidden in back rooms and closets of friends and allies in Kabul, eventually disguised as a wedding party on their way to a ceremony in order to leave the city and almost caught and killed by The Taliban on many occasions. Today Siar tells the full story, and Turner recounts the efforts that he and Stand Up NY Comedy Club owner Dani Zoldan put forth to attempt to help Siar escape. Dani Zoldan is a lifelong entrepreneur. In 2008, he purchased Stand Up NY, the famous comedy club on the Upper West Side of Manhattan that made its name in the 80’s and 90’s with many of the world’s best comics including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Louis CK and Jon Stewart. Today, (at least pre-pandemic when we could still gather in person!) the club has been home to many current A-listers including Amy Schumer, Michael Che, Pete Davidson and Judah Friedlander. I met Dani through James Altucher, who bought into club ownership in 2016, and was honored to participate in their inaugural Podcast Row. When I saw Dani quoted in the New York Times March 18: Open Your Laptops, the Comedy Show Is About to Begin, as businesses started shutting down, I knew he’d have an interesting Pivot perspective to share! Episode 136: Dani Zoldan, owner of Stand Up NY, shares how the comedy club helps him to build relationships and launch multiple businesses. Guest Biography Dani Zoldan been an entrepreneur since I was 19 years old. While in college, he founded the online music company Eargazmic.com which was a website where independent bands and musicians could promote and sell their music. Each artist had their own web page which consisted of photos, a bio, upcoming tour dates and links to purchase MP3’s. In 2004, when phone carriers starting utilizing voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and routing their traffic over internet lines instead of phone lines, Dani decided to experiment with that technology and built an IP connection from his apartment closet (that’s closet, as in where you put clothes) to Trinidad & Tobago and successfully was able to make long distance phone calls but paying local (Trinidad) prices. This experiment launched Titan International, which ultimately became a big player in selling wholesale long distance services to phone companies. Verizon, China Telecom, TATA Communications and many phone companies around the world relied on Titan's services. In 2008, Dani purchased Stand Up NY, the famous comedy club on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Stand Up NY made its name in the 80’s and 90’s with many of the world’s best comics known to frequent the club including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Louis CK and Jon Stewart. Today, the club is home to many current A-listers including Amy Schumer, Michael Che, Pete Davidson and Judah Friedlander. In 2013, Dani and co-founder Jon Fatigate created Stand Up NY Labs, a comedy incubator. They successfully launched several hit podcasts including Tuesdays with Stories, Race Wars, The Jtrain podcast and In the Conversation which can can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and SoundCloud. In 2015 DGital Media, an audio engagement company invested in their company and currently ad-rep the network. At the end of 2016, Stand Up NY launched Skitish Media which creates short, funny, and shareable video content for brands and media agencies. Dani lives on the Upper West Side with my wife Billie, an orthodontist and three children - Bradyn, Sydney and Ryder. In this episode, you'll learn: Insights into running a comedy club. How to grow by building other businesses around a core business. The value of making connections with people and growing your network. Dani Zoldan bought a comedy club in NYC at age 24. He lives two blocks away with his surprisingly blonde and beautiful Jewish wife and hosts the biggest comics in the biz, including yours truly. He is also the lowest energy guest I’ve had to date, and at times I had to nudge him awake. But my maverick interviewing skills yielded beautiful results and this episode is soothing, relaxing, funny and…short.

Dani Zoldan - serial entrepreneur, creator of Skitish Media (creative agency that creates viral comedic content for brands and media agencies) host of Dark Horse Podcast that focuses on musicians, athletes, and entrepreneurs, and most notably known as the owner of Stand Up NY, home to many comics such as Amy Schumer, Kevin Hart, Seinfeld and countless others talks about his business strategies plus numerous ways to monetize a company. In this episode we go through Dani’s history; his early days in the tech, music, and online pharma industries. We also uncover the story on how he bought Stand Up NY and how frightening that process was. Dani reveals how heavily he was influenced by his NYC roots which sparked his entrepreneurial spirit and how the comedy club is recession proof (people will always need to laugh). Dani talks about owning a comedy club vs. a telecom business and how vastly different they are. Great tips and insight are gold nuggets in this conversation when Dani gets into his business plans, price points, and some upcoming ideas that may soon come to fruition! Plenty of stories, business goals, strategies, and how to trust in others to scale and level up are a small thread from this wonderful tapestry of an episode! For Episode 32 of the Dark Horse Podcast, genre-bending and barrier-breaking band Gangstagrass sit down with Dani Zoldan to break down what it means to create a genre from scratch. Responsible for the Emmy-nominated theme from Justified, the band brings together the essential beat of hip-hop with the natural melody of bluegrass riffs. They share stories about getting scoffed at when first suggesting rapping to a steel guitar beat and what it was like to get bluegrass performers to move with the beat during live shows. Tune in to hear Dani, Chloe, and Dan Greenwald learn that even though country music in New York City seems like a "needle in a haystack situation", there's a lot more genuine interest in the genre.

I’d always been interested in comedy, but I was completely terrified to go up on stage. But now I’m obsessed. I interview as many of my favorite comedians on the show as I can, so I could learn from them. I want to know everything. Not just from comedians. But from everyone in the industry. And Dani Zoldan, owner of Stand Up NY, is the one who convinced me go on stage consistently. So I went up 6x a week. I got good. Stand-up comedy is by far the hardest skill I’ve ever wanted to learn. And now, I needed to reflect. I’ve been doing stand up close to 3 years now. I own part of a comedy club. I’ve gone all in. I wanted Dani to interview me because he was the person who encouraged me the most in the beginning. Episode #1 of the Dark Horse podcast! Dani Zoldan sits down with entrepreneur Ali Abdullah and comedian Yamaneika Saunders. This was a super engaging and entertaining episode as we heard stories from Ali how he went from wanting to play pro basketball to attending MIT and subsequently dropping out to help care for his mom. Ali is also a former Google engineer who ended up homeless before starting the successful app Claim It. Thanks Yamaneika for being my wing-woman and Ari Ginsburg, Dan Greenwald & James Altucher for guiding me through a successful launch.
Dani Zoldan, Gabe Waldman and James Altucher talk about owning a comedy club and dispel the stereotypes of the "owner"
