Introduction: Welcome to "Meet the Author,” a show that takes you behind the scenes to meet the authors of today's most impactful books. This is a show about stories and ideas that will educate, encourage, and inspire you to live a richer, more meaningful life. On today's episode, you'll meet former White House Social Secretary, Deesha Dyer and learn about her memoir, “Undiplomatic,” a deeply personal narrative about combating self-doubt while being on top of the world. Deesha reflects on how imposter syndrome threatened her self-esteem, proven aptitude, and survival until she realized that it was neither her fault nor her responsibility. About Deesha Dyer and “Undiplomatic”: Without credentials or connections, community college student and advocate Deesha Dyer navigated her imposter syndrome, landing one of the most exclusive positions in the White House. Michelle Obama calls “Undiplomatic” “smart, funny, and endlessly inspirational.”From the most unlikely person to end up as a senior official to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama comes a candid, incredible, and inspiring story. Moved by the election of the country's first Black president, Deesha Dyer applied for a White House internship in 2009 as a thirty-one-year-old part-time community college student, taking a leap that carried her into a permanent full-time position, followed by three promotions landing her at the epicenter of politics. In spite of the little voice in her head telling her she didn't deserve to be there, Deesha thrived and rose to the highly coveted role of White House social secretary, giving her a front-row seat to defining moments in history while curating some of the flyest parties 1600 Pennsylvania has ever seen. Yet, with humor and realness, she peels back the curtain, revealing the hard truth about why she spent years trying to hide behind it. From the Community College of Philadelphia to The White House, Deesha Dyer's journey has been anything but a linear path. Along the way she's always leaned into her curiosity and faith that she could make a way. In this episode, Deesha shares insights from her memoir, "Undiplomatic: How My Attitude Created the Best Kind of Trouble," and dives into topics like overcoming imposter syndrome, leaning into joy, and embracing unconventional career paths. Deesha Dyer never thought she'd wind up in the White House. As a kid growing up in Philadelphia, she desperately wanted to travel but it always felt out of reach. Until she landed a coveted internship in the Obama administration, working in the office that arranged all of the president's travel. Over the next eight years, she would travel around the world with the President and First Lady—in style!—visiting embassies, hobnobbing with celebrities, and yes, traveling alone, much of which she's chronicled in her new memoir, Undiplomatic. She also got a peek into the diplomatic world, where “I would never see any Black people in the U.S. embassies,” she told me. Until she worked in the White House, she had no idea that something like the U.S. Foreign Service existed. And that sparked an idea: To start a nonprofit that would help other Black girls access these opportunities. In 2014, she founded beGirl.World Global Scholars, a two-year program that culminates in a big international trip. In today's episode, she takes us on that first journey. She and her cofounder, Marcella, took 10 girls to London and Paris, a two-week whirlwind that was delightful and stressful, learning a lot about what to do—and what not to do. Plus, in the companion interview on YouTube, Deesha shares all the behind-the-scenes details about traveling with the Obamas, what it's like to fly on Air Force One, and the delightful challenge of transitioning back to “normal” travel after eight years of diplomatic luxuries. So how did this self-styled undiplomatic young woman become a member of the most exclusive club in the world? She served as the White House social secretary during the Obama administration and is currently the founder and CEO of social impact agency, Hook & Fasten. This week I spoke to President Obama's Social Secretary, Deesha Dyer. She recently published her memoir, Undiplomatic, which dives into how a hip-hop journalist without credentials, connections, or a college degree conquered imposter syndrome while landing one of the most sought-after positions in the White House. Moved by the election of the country's first Black president, she applied for a White House internship at 31, taking a leap that carried her through being hired in a full-time position that landed her at the epicenter of politics. I loved her book and was stoked to get to talk to her. We covered: the importance of following curiosity and acting on it, what she learned from spending time with Michelle and Barack Obama, redefining societal timelines, throwing parties at the White House, the Obama years overall, and the connection between pop culture and politics. As well as: the importance of cross-learning in mentorship and having customer service experience. Let us know if you listen! Imposter syndrome is a real and pervasive problem. It's associated with burnout, depression and anxiety, and it holds us back from reaching our full potential and achieving career satisfaction. Deesha Dyer is the former White House Social Secretary under President Obama, meaning she was THE person responsible for state dinners, official functions, visits by Popes and presidents, performances by Beyoncé (!), and more. Deesha's new book UNDIPLOMATIC pulls back the curtain on White House life to funny, winning effect, but even more so, it documents a young Black woman's struggle to belong in our nation's most prestigious spaces. In 2009, at age 31, Deesha Dyer's finances were... messy. She'd dropped out of college, accruing a mountain of debt but no degree. She had an eviction on her record and bad credit. She plugged away at an admin job, while freelancing as an organizer and blogger of her beloved hip-hop / soul scene in Philly. (Hello, Jill Scott!) Inspired by the Obama campaign, she applied for a White House internship that she knew was a longshot. These jobs were for phenoms from Harvard and Howard. Not part-time community college students in their thirties with zero connections. To her shock, Deesha got the gig. For the first time in her life, she had a full-time job that reflected her passion for change. In just five years or so, she was in charge of a whole White House department.
Not following the expected path isn't necessarily a recipe for success in a city like Washington, D.C., but that is exactly what my guest this week, Deesha Dyer, did. At the age of 31, working full time and in community college part time, she took a chance on herself and applied for a White House internship in the Obama administration. And thank goodness she did, because she quickly found herself zipping up the ranks until she became the White House social secretary, where she worked until 2017.There's a lot we should talk about with Deesha. From imposter syndrome to embracing who you are even if it makes other people uncomfortable, we cover a wide range of topics. The Show This is a breathtaking underdog and reinvention story. Perhaps the most remarkable I've heard on Behind the Brilliance. Deesha shares her journey from boarding school to dropping out of college because she ran out of money to becoming a White House intern at 30 years old to becoming the Social Secretary under the Obama Administration. She opens up about the imposter syndrome, setbacks, and insecurities she faced, and how she conquered them all. The Guest Deesha Dyer is a speaker, writer, Creative Event and Strategy consultant, and most notably known as the former Obama Administration Social Secretary. The Philadelphia native became a White House intern at the age of 30 and completed a seven-year tenure there that honed her expertise in event coordination, logistics, protocol, and statecraft. Her storied career is unconventional at best, with themes of reinvention, drive, and a commitment to community service integrated throughout. In this episode, we cover: -how Deesha bounced back from setbacks to finish college in her early 30s -how Deesha went from community activist in Philly to White House Social Secretary (it's an epic tale) -Deesha's favorite travel memory from traveling the world with the President -Deesha's secrets for throwing a great party -how Deesha conquered Imposter Syndrome -the nonprofit Deesha started, Be Girl World -and much more! The Philadelphia native became a White House intern at the age of 30 and completed a seven-year tenure there that honed her expertise in event coordination, logistics, protocol, and statecraft. An award-winning event producer, Deesha has been featured in national media outlets including TIME, The New York Times, Marie Claire, Essence, Vogue, Refinery29, Forbes, The Root and Washington Post. A charismatic speaker with unbridled optimism, she now shares her message of hope, hard work and living life on your own terms with audiences across the country, while running her private consulting firm. Deesha’s Dreams: How determined are you to “go for it” and accomplish your dreams, even when they are beyond your wildest imagination? Deesha is a testimony to perseverance and being a “regular person” with some very big dreams. She had never thought about a career related to politics until Barack Obama became president. She related to him and was determined to work for him somehow, even though it seemed absurd. She got an application for an internship, applied, and soon had a permanent job at THE WHITE HOUSE! TWEET: When Obama became president, I was determined to work for him-- somehow, some way. @deeshadyer Logistics and “Putting stuff together”: How do you prepare for a job in the White House? Deesha had planned parties and events before, but she had to learn fast when she landed this job. She served as Special Assistant to the president, as hotel director who traveled with the president and first lady, and as the White House Social Secretary. “Who would have believed that there would be a black First Family and that I would get to work for them?” She admits that the 17-year-old Deesha would have never thought she was “good enough” to end up at the White House. TWEET: I’m an ordinary person who does #extraordinary things. @deeshadyer Be Girl World: How can high school girls be elevated and empowered to gain confidence and find their voice? Deesha believes it can happen through the program she co-founded in 2014. The program takes 12 girls for a 2-year class, teaching them to express themselves and learn about their world by traveling and experiencing different surroundings. The girls obtained passports and took their first international trip to London and Paris recently. Some of these girls have gone on to study abroad and have learned about foreign service, diplomacy, and global jobs that are available to them. They can represent themselves well wherever they go, all because of this educational and empowerment program. TWEET: My 17-year-old self would’ve never thought she was good enough for the White House. @deeshadyer Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Be kind to yourself and extend grace to yourself.
