Atlanta's WXIA-TV, 11 Alive, broke the story late last week: a Georgia woman, brain-dead since February, has been kept alive for more than 90 days because Emory Hospital lawyers advised the hospital against ending life support because of an early pregnancy. Now, her family's gripped in perpetual mourning while also awaiting the birth of what could likely be a child with immense medial woes of its own. It leaves Georgia politicians, left and right, finger-pointing. State Senator Nabila Islam-Parkes penned a letter to Attorney General Chris Carr (running for the GOP nomination for governor, as well) to answer questions and provide clarity on the state's position on such a situation. Carr, for his part, said of the draconian six-week Georgia abortion ban, put in place by his party in 2019, that “removing life support is not an action ‘with the purpose to terminate a pregnancy.'” That statement could prove interesting in the upcoming primary, but in the meanwhile, a grieving family is left without input at all. Joining me today to discuss this matter is Georgia WIN List executive director Melita Easters. ------The impacts Thomasville, Georgia residents have endured thanks to decades of air and pollution by nearby manufacturing isn't lost on Senator Jon Ossoff, who skewered Trump EPA administrator Lee Zeldin last week as to why his administration eliminated funding for a health clinic slated for that cancer-riddled community in southwest Georgia. Ossoff wasn't alone, and the ripping didn't just come from Democrats. ------Over the weekend we learned of former President Joe Biden's prostate cancer diagnosis, and WUSA-9 TV in D.C. sought input from an oncologist to give her optimistic outlook. That didn't stop the current President's son from launching into more conspiracy theories of cover-up, of course, but, by and large, even POTUS and the usually repugnant Marjorie Taylor Greene wish him well.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the outspoken Republican representative from Georgia, recently voiced critical sentiments towards Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, in light of recent reports suggesting an inappropriate relationship with a key prosecutor. Greene, communicating to Breitbart News, was effortlessly candid about the report, which suggests that Willis had been involved romantically with Nathan Hale, a prosecutor she herself hired to assist in the case against former President Donald Trump. Documents submitted in court last week hinted at the romantic involvement between Willis and Hale, a revelation that seemed to bypass Willis's stern assertions that such connections had no impact on her duties or prosecution relating to the Trump case. This involves numerous individuals implicated in alleged state RICO violations following the contentious 2020 election. Greene firmly spoke her mind with respect to Willis maintaining her current position, 'Absolutely, she should step down.' Greene didn't hold back her clear skepticism, saying, 'She should be absolutely ashamed of herself.' She was referring to Willis's alleged misconduct, including engaging in an improper relationship and misusing public funds. To oversee this issue, an investigation has been ordered by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, as reported by The Washington Post. Greene expressed her eagerness to see a thorough exploration of the issue, indicating, 'There's so much evidence coming out. I would love to see a criminal investigation. That's what should be happening here, in the state of Georgia, against Fani Willis,' This led her to appeal to Gov. Kemp, and Attorney General Chris Carr to initiate a criminal investigation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Key performers for the boys included Alexander Thompson (fifth), Carter Dehnke (ninth), Alex Sotomayor (eleventh), and Charlie Thomas (twentieth). Collins Hill's Vincent Pifer secured fourteenth place. The Brookwood girls were led by Kennedy Wardle's victory, with Ava Layson (fifth) and Lauren Thisdale (tenth) contributing. Norcross' Emily Rodriguez achieved third place, and Elkin Regina from the same team secured seventeenth. ***LEAH***   Break 4:  Lawrenceville - Henssler 60 Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. The Creekside Towers development, located off South Cobb Drive, plans to increase the unit count from 200 to 295. While the building's height would remain the same, the space for amenities would be reduced, and additional underground parking would be included. The city planning staff and planning commission have recommended approval of the application. If approved, construction is set to begin in winter, and the tower would consist of various unit types. The developer has also pledged to reserve four units at reduced rates for city first responders.     Story 3: council   The City Council is set to vote on appointing Kathy Young to represent Ward 7 for the remainder of 2023. The vacancy in Ward 7 was created when Lewis Wheaton resigned after moving out of his ward. Mayor Derek Norton and council members have expressed support for Young's appointment. Young, a part-time college and career adviser at Campbell High School, has a background in economic development and civic involvement. However, many skeptical individuals believe there are deeper reasons for McCoy's dismissal. McCoy had previously demonstrated exceptional performance as manager of the county's landfill and had gained respect from state officials and county employees. However, an incident in 2018 involving County Commissioner John Hayes and McCoy during an educational field trip resulted in controversy. McCoy filed a lawsuit against the county, claiming a hostile work environment, which was settled out of court. Other incidents involving the commissioners' actions and expenses have also emerged. These incidents have led to speculation about the true reasons behind McCoy's dismissal. The McEachern girls dominated the first half, then fought off a strong comeback by Campbell in the second to take a 50-47 victory over their longtime county rivals in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state basketball tournament at Lovinggood Arena on Saturday. It was all McEachern in the first half as it led 30-15 at halftime, but Campbell outscored the Indians 32-20 in the second half to narrow the margin. With the win, McEachern advanced to the state quarterfinals for the 10th time in 13 years. The Indians will host Central Gwinnett in the state quarterfinals Wednesday at 6 p.m. The McEachern boys earned its seventh state quarterfinal appearance in eight years with a resounding 88-51 victory over Westlake in the second round of the Class AAAAAAA state tournament at Lovinggood Arena on Saturday. With the win, McEachern will now host county rival Wheeler in a quarterfinal showdown between the top two ranked teams in the state in the ScoreAtlanta pre-tournament Class 7 A  boys' state rankings – with the Wildcats ranked Number 1 and the Indians Number 2. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday. The Black History Month dinner hosted by the city of Smyrna, called off multiple times in recent years because of the pandemic, convened Friday evening at the Smyrna recreation center. More than 150 people were eager to listen to the night's keynote speaker, Erica Armstrong Dunbar, author of “She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman.” Councilman Lewis Wheaton welcomed and thanked the guests for coming, reminding them that the proceeds from the evening would benefit the foundations for Griffin and Campbell middle schools, before introducing Dunbar to loud applause. Dunbar's goal was to reintroduce people to Harriet Tubman. Tubman is best known as the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad — a network of secret routes slaves used during the 1800s to escape to freedom. Tubman would make the journey to lead people out of enslavement at least 13 times. Dunbar discussed how the Black Lives Matter movement reminds Americans of the people and names who have been and continue to be lost to violence, adding that social reform is an ongoing process. With her book, Dunbar said she was trying to tell the story of a complex woman who dedicated her life to social justice, and how her influence still inspires new generations. After the presentation, a long line formed to get books autographed by the author, particularly some young readers, who remarked that they really loved hearing about Harriet Tubman. Several hundred people ran full tilt into Lake Acworth on Saturday — some of them in costume. The brisk excursion was part of the “Polar Plunge,” an annual national fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The money will help run and sponsor athletes for the state's Special Olympics, which will be at Emory University in May. The event was jointly organized by the Special Olympics of Georgia and Law Enforcement Torch Run, a long-running campaign among law enforcement professionals who support the Special Olympics. Several local law enforcement agencies raised money and submerged officers and staff, including the Kennesaw and Acworth police departments, and the Cobb County Sheriff's Department, the latter of which won the costume contest by riding into the lake on toy horses. The water temperature inside the lake was estimated to be in the upper 50s. Matthew Wynne, a Special Olympics athlete who grew up in Alpharetta, said the cold water is part of what makes the event fun, and he wouldn't have minded if the water had been more frigid. Georgia Milton-Sheats, CEO of Special Olympics Georgia since 1999, ran into the lake alongside other Special Olympics organizers. She said almost 500 people raised money and registered for the plunge, and the event raised more than $230,000.  State Senator Ed Setzler, filed legislation this week to reimpose Republicans' county commission district map on the Cobb Board of Commissioners. Senate Bill 236 mirrors the map passed last year by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, which drew Democratic Commissioner Jerica Richardson out of her seat. The proposal comes after Setzler filed a bill — SB 124 — explicitly prohibiting Georgia counties from drawing their own district lines, which the commission's Democrats have been working to do since October. If passed, the tandem bills could overrule the Democrats' “home rule” effort designed to amend the district lines and keep Richardson in office. Though Republican officials, including Attorney General Chris Carr, have said the home rule bid is unconstitutional, Richardson and her two Democratic colleagues on the Cobb Board of Commissioners maintain the effort is legal. Richardson said were the legislation to be passed, it would end her tenure on the board. East Cobb resident Larry Savage, meanwhile, challenged the constitutionality of the home rule effort in a lawsuit filed just before the new year. That lawsuit was later withdrawn, with Savage saying a follow-up suit was forthcoming. That suit, however, has yet to materialize. Savage last said he was working with a new attorney but did not respond to a request for comment this week. Andrew Young Jr., former ambassador to the United Nations, former congressman, past mayor of Atlanta and civil rights icon, will be the keynote speaker at the Georgia Symphony Orchestra's annual Celebrity Luncheon fundraiser. The event will take place March 18 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Marietta Country Club. Ambassador Young will be joined by a group of local artists, authors, musicians and business leaders. Proceeds from the event will benefit the GSO's musical performance, youth education and outreach programs. Not only are guests certain to be inspired by Ambassador Young, but they also will select to be seated at a table with one of a carefully curated collection of influential and creative area personalities to learn more about them. A specially created three-course menu will be prepared by Gary Sanderson, Marietta Country Club executive chef, and his team. The event also will provide a fantastic opportunity for guests to indulge themselves from among an array of silent and live auction goods, such as rare trinkets and tidbits, fine art and everyday splurges. On March 11, Cobb County will be well represented in the 139th Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade as it marches down Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta. Ten local groups will participate in one the largest St. Patrick's parades in the Southeast, which draws hundreds of parade watchers from around the region. The parade will begin at noon at the intersection of Peachtree Street and 15th Street and will continue down Peachtree to 5th Street, concluding at 1:30 p.m. The Cobb County Groups are: - the 116th Army Band,  Artz for the Harp, Atlanta Freedom Band, Atlanta Gaelic Athletic Association, Cosplay Volunteers of Atlanta, DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Firefighters Emerald Society of Metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia Smoke Diver Association, MIB DragonCon Parade Crew and Twilight Twirlers of Marietta #CobbCounty #Marietta #LocalNews -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com              See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

California church that was fined over $200K for defying COVID-19 restrictions gets fines dropped https://www.foxnews.com/us/california-church-fined-200k-defying-covid-19-restrictions-fines-dropped A California church that continued to hold services in defiance of county health orders that it close down during the COVID-19 pandemic has had its fines dropped after a nearly two-year battle. "This is a significant victory for churches and pastors across this country," Robert Tyler, president of Advocates for Faith & Freedom, said in a press release after the California Court of Appeal reversed an injunction against Calvary Chapel San Jose. "We are honored to represent pastors and churches who are willing to take the heat in defense of liberty because it benefits everyone." At issue was the church's refusal to comply with health officials in Santa Clara County, who obtained a temporary restraining order and injunction in November 2020 against Calvary Chapel and two pastors, Mike McClure and Carson Atherly, after the church failed to follow pandemic health orders that included restrictions on in-person services, mask mandates, and a submission to the county of the church's social distancing protocols. The defiance eventually resulted in over $200,000 in fines for the church, which continued to hold worship services as the monetary penalties mounted. Calvary Chapel's persistence eventually paid off. The California Court of Appeal reversed the injunction, contempt orders, and fines on Monday. "For the reasons stated below, we conclude that the temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions are facially unconstitutional pursuant to the recent guidance of the United States Supreme Court regarding the First Amendment’s protection of the free exercise of religion in the context of public health orders that impact religious practice," the court said in the ruling. "As the underlying orders which Calvary Chapel violated are void and unenforceable, we will annul the orders of contempt in their entirety and reverse the orders to pay monetary sanctions." Biden signs $739 billion Inflation Reduction Act into law, slams GOP for voting against the tax, climate deal https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-signs-739-billion-inflation-reduction-act-law-slams-gop-voting-against-tax-climate-deal President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law on Tuesday, saying "the American people won, and the special interests lost" with the new legislation and touting Democratic support while slamming Republicans for not backing the bill. The president returned to the White House after a week-long vacation in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Biden was joined by House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer during an event in the State Dining Room at the White House. "With this law, the American people won, and the special interests lost," Biden said Tuesday. "This administration began amid a dark time in America … a once-in-a-century pandemic, devastating joblessness, clear and present threats to democracy and the rule of law, doubts about America's future itself — and yet we've not wavered, we've not flinched, and we've not given in." Biden said, instead, the law will "deliver results for the American people." "We didn't tear down. We built up. We didn't look back. We look forward," Biden said. "And today, today, offers further proof that the soul of America is vibrant. The future of America is bright, and the promise of America is real. And just beginning." The bill, which was passed by the Senate earlier this month and the House of Representatives last week, costs an estimated $437 billion, with $369 billion going toward investments in "Energy Security and Climate Change," according to a summary by Senate Democrats. Vice President Kamala Harris cast a tie-breaking vote to allow the legislation to pass, 51-50, in the Senate, and the House passed the legislation a few days later. "I am confident this bill will endure as one of the greatest legislative feats in decades," said Schumer, D-N.Y. "In normal times, getting these bills done would be a huge achievement, but to do now, with only 50 Democratic votes in the Senate over an intransigent Republican minority, is nothing short of amazing." Schumer thanked Biden for his leadership during the Tuesday event, and he thanked his Democratic colleagues, including Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., for joining together to pass the package, saying it shows "how dedicated and persistent our caucus is." Democrats project that the legislation will reduce the deficit by bringing in $737 billion. This includes an estimated $124 billion from IRS tax enforcement, the projected result of hiring 87,000 new IRS agents who will ramp up audits. The bill also imposes a 15% corporate minimum tax that the Joint Committee on Taxation predicts will raise $222 billion, and prescription drug pricing reform that the Senate estimates will bring in $265 billion. The Congressional Budget Office said the bill will have "a negligible effect" on inflation in 2022, and in 2023 its impact would range between reducing inflation by 0.1% and increasing it by 0.1%. Judge declines request to block Georgia's fetal heartbeat law that bans some abortions https://justthenews.com/nation/states/center-square/fulton-county-judge-declines-request-block-georgias-fetal-heartbeat-law Fulton County Superior Court judge declined a request to block Georgia's fetal heartbeat law that bans most abortions after six weeks. Georgia lawmakers passed House Bill 481, the Living Infants Fairness Equality Act, in 2019. However, a federal judge initially blocked the law, commonly called the "Heartbeat Bill," because the U.S. Supreme Court had previously upheld the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Georgia officials asked the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to reverse the district court decision, and a federal appeals judge ruled the law could take effect. The move officials prompted a group of pro-abortion doctors and advocates to file a lawsuit in Fulton County Superior Court. "The court's decision today declining to block the abortion ban is extremely disappointing and leaves in place a law that severely compromises the quality of women's healthcare in the state of Georgia," Andrea Young, executive director of the ACLU of Georgia, said in an announcement. "Ultimately, the power is with Georgia voters to affirm our right to privacy and to make personal, private and intimate decisions without government interference." Opponents of the law said the ruling is not final and that it denied immediate "emergency relief" to block HB 481. In a news release, opponents said they planned to continue their fight. Kara Richardson, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Chris Carr, declined to comment, saying the case is ongoing. Katie Byrd and Andrew Isenhour, spokespeople for Georgia Gov. Murkowski was one of seven senators who voted to impeach the 45th President the second time. Meanwhile, experts are wondering if Wyoming Rep. Monday on Political Rewind: Gov. Brian Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr have expanded their legal battle against the Biden administration's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. They filed a new lawsuit even as Georgia passed 25,000 deaths from COVID-19. Axios political reporter Emma Hurt pointed out that Kemp's resistance to the vaccine mandate falls in line with his strategy throughout the pandemic, and his opposition to Biden. "He says, 'This is your choice,'" she said. "'You and your doctor should decide. I think it's a good idea, but I'm not going to tell you what to do. I'm the government. You decide for yourself.' So it really fits in with that track record. And it also positions Kemp well. As you know, I think we've seen him do this repeatedly, going back to the good politics point, as kind of a foil on the national stage to Biden. We saw it with the voting law. And so it is it does make political sense as well beyond know the legal arguments that they are making." A federal appeals court has temporarily stayed the order calling for companies with more than 100 employees to require vaccines for their workers by early next year. Meanwhile, the state senate is moving quickly to pass new Georgia voting districts. The redistricting committee approved new senate districts on just the third day of the special session. Democrats say GOP legislators aren't giving them or the public the time needed to weigh in on the new maps.
