Public Works Director Mark Rice presented two options, with the council favoring Option B, which would move the dumpsters into an enclosure in First Baptist Church’s parking lot and make Root Street one-way, adding nine parking spaces. The council voted unanimously to move the plan forward, with final traffic flow and parking details to be determined later. Mayor Tumlin and others expressed optimism about the long-awaited solution. STORY 2: Austell Dance Team's Trailer Containing Props, Set Pieces Stolen Before Competition Lisa’s Dance Spot (LDS) in Austell is seeking help to locate their stolen cargo trailer, taken on March 24. The applicant, Fort & Cole Street, plans two-story, craftsman-style homes with garages and a homeowners association. Cobb DOT raised issues with driveway spacing and private alley design, while the fire department questioned emergency vehicle access. A Cobb Schools representative opposed the project due to potential enrollment impacts at Osborne High. The commission seeks further input from the stormwater division before proceeding. Themed “Our Power, Our Planet,” the event, hosted by Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and Gwinnett Solid Waste, will collect hard-to-recycle items like electronics, paint, tires, clothing, and paper. In 2024, the event diverted 72 tons of waste from landfills. Volunteers aged 16+ are needed to assist. Activities include face painting, touch-a-truck, and refreshments. Convicted on seven counts, including aggravated child molestation and incest, his crimes were discovered in April 2023 when the victim's parents found incriminating video footage. After fleeing, Esquilin-Perez evaded police for 18 hours before surrendering. He must also register as a sex offender. The Woodstock City Council approved the development, which aims to attract local small businesses rather than national brands. The center will include 484 parking spaces and have three access points. The project, funded by a $1.25 million grant and $3.5 million loan from the State Road and Tollway Authority, added two travel lanes, sidewalks, and pedestrian lighting, enhancing connectivity and safety. Since 2007, these clinics have collaborated with county health departments to provide convenient flu shots. This year, Cherokee County vaccinated 92 residents, Gilmer 61, Pickens 55, Fannin 110, Murray 123, and Whitfield 236. Flu vaccines are also available at local doctors, pharmacies, and grocery stores, often at little to no cost. The Georgia Department of Public Health advises preventive measures like frequent handwashing and staying home when sick. Dr. Alyssa Liguori notes that preeclampsia's causes are still under research, but risk factors include first pregnancies and hypertension. Women are encouraged to monitor symptoms and consult doctors, as early detection and treatment are crucial.  STORY 5: Cherokee County Fire Sergeant Retires After 23 Years of Service  Sgt. Stephen Ballow of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services retired after a 23-year career, completing his final shift at Station 4 in Free Home on October 22. A retirement breakfast celebrated his service, where Fire Chief Eddie Robinson presented him with a helmet plaque, honoring his leadership and dedication. Early voting continues with specific hours until November 1 at various locations, including the Cherokee County Elections Office and several public libraries. The most popular polling sites are Rose Creek Public Library and Hickory Flat Public Library. One day of Sunday voting was offered on October 20. Voters must cast their ballots at assigned precincts on Election Day, November 5, and can check details at mvp.sos.ga.gov. Absentee ballots can be submitted at designated drop boxes during early voting hours. STORY 2:  Two Injured in Commercial Fire on Univeter Road A fire at Carmichael Development on Univeter Road in Canton resulted in two people being hospitalized with burn injuries. The fire, reported just before 4 p.m., involved a dump truck and Conex trailer, with flames affecting a nearby commercial structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and searched for additional victims, finding none. A significant diesel fuel spill required the Hazardous Materials team for cleanup. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Univeter Road was temporarily closed but reopened by 5:35 p.m. on Monday. STORY 3:  Canton Postpones Decision on Pearidge Road Development The Canton City Council has delayed a decision on a mixed-use development proposal in the Pearidge community, rescheduling the vote for November 7 to allow more discussion. The proposal by Pearidge Land Investments, LLC involves annexing 62.66 acres and combining it with 8.5 acres already in Canton for a total of 70.72 acres. The plan includes 215 homes and a 1.4-acre commercial site, with amenities like a pool and dog park. The development would feature public streets, sidewalks, and open spaces. A traffic study indicates acceptable service levels for nearby roads. In July 2018, Gary's burned remains were discovered at their home in Free Home, Georgia. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined he was killed by a gunshot, ruling it a homicide. Melody Farris, arrested in Tennessee nearly a year later, faces charges of malice murder, aggravated assault, and concealing a death, to which she has pleaded not guilty. Her trial started yesterday and is expected to last three to four weeks. STORY 2:  Here is What's in Canton's New Parks and Rec Master Plan The city of Canton has approved its first Parks and Recreation Master Plan to guide future projects and programs. Approved by the city council on October 3, the plan was developed with community input and aims to enhance park services. Key priorities include developing walking trails, natural parks, and hosting festivals. The plan outlines improvements like new parks, trails, and facilities, and suggests funding sources such as grants and donations. STORY 3:  Canton Residents Weigh In on Historic District Expansion Plan Canton officials held a public hearing to discuss expanding the city's Historic District and implementing new residential design guidelines. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a $100,000 agreement with Jericho Design Group to plan the transformation of the old Buffington Elementary School site into a new fire headquarters and station. Located at 4568 Cumming Highway, the site will include Fire Station 29, a logistics building, and a fire safety village. The project aims to preserve the historic main building while adding compatible structures. Funded by the county's Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax 2024, the 9.88-acre site was purchased for $1.2 million and is adjacent to county-owned land. STORY 3:  Animal Hospital Coming to Hickory Flat Area in Cherokee The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the rezoning of 1.1 acres in Hickory Flat for a new veterinary animal hospital. Holly and Doug Marrinson plan to build a 3,500-square-foot facility with 18 parking spaces. Conditions include no outside runs and no unsupervised animals. The site, part of a 2.89-acre property at 7997 Hickory Flat Highway, also houses a State Farm Insurance office. The hospital aims to serve about 16 clients daily and employ six to seven people in its first year. A separate entrance for the hospital requires Georgia Department of Transportation approval. This budget is $15 million more than the previous year and includes allocations for various departments: $167.1 million for the general fund, $56.6 million for fire services, and $22.1 million for emergency medical services, among others. The budget supports 32 new positions, including 20 in fire and EMS, and maintains a millage rate of 5.153 mills. Capital funds total $100.9 million, with significant investments in public works and courthouse expansion. Public safety receives 54.1% of the operating budget. STORY 5:  Cherokee Chamber Collecting Supplies for Title 1 Schools The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce is collecting school supplies for Title 1 schools in the Cherokee County School District until December 2. They are seeking donations of dry erase markers, No. 2 pencils, pocket folders with prongs, sticky notes, and composition notebooks. Supplies can be dropped off at the chamber office in Canton or at Good Morning Cherokee events on November 7. Monetary donations are also welcome. Johnson was unanimously elected by the board on September 23 after previous votes were split along party lines. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Cherokee Hall at the Cherokee County Administration Complex in Canton. Johnson replaces Steve Divine, who resigned in August, with Vice Chair Julie Glade having served as acting chair since then. STORY 7:  Federal probe finds deplorable conditions inside Georgia prisons The U.S. Justice Department has found that Georgia's prison system is violating inmates' constitutional rights by failing to protect them from widespread violence. A 94-page report highlights systemic issues, including understaffing, contraband control, and gang influence, leading to assaults, rapes, and murders. The investigation, initially focused on protecting LGBT inmates, expanded to all inmates in medium- and close-security prisons. The Justice Department urges Georgia to address these issues urgently. The state is responding by hiring a consultant and forming legislative committees to assess and improve prison conditions, acknowledging staffing and infrastructure challenges.   We'll have closing comments after this. His death was unrelated to his firefighting duties. The department expressed deep sorrow and called for support and compassion for his family, friends, and colleagues, honoring his impactful legacy in the community. Cartoon Network had already shown us a superhero fighting evil by moonlight and a character trying to find the dragonballs, but no one was ready for a character run over by car to come back to life as a spirit detective to work with his rival and two demons. Who knew this was the wild card for Cartoon Network. Today's the day! First announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018, Clone Wars Season 7 is finally here, with the first episode dropping on Disney+ earlier today. And tomorrow, we'll have the official Clone Wars Briefing for the episode, "The Bad Batch."
