Family, we hope you enjoyed the insightful discussion about organ, eye, and tissue donation! We were honored to have Michael Coleman, Director of External Affairs at Sierra Donor Services, and Reverend Rick Harrell, Senior Minister at the Center for Spiritual Awareness, as our guests. We explored the significance of National Donor Sabbath and the urgent need to increase the number of registered donors, especially within communities of color. With over 20,000 people in California waiting for life-saving transplants—and almost 80% of kidney transplant patients being people of color—our conversation emphasized the impact one donor can make. We also discussed how our faith communities are stepping up to raise awareness and support health equity. Remember, one decision can save lives. This year, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of TeachBeyond! TeachBeyond was actually formerly known as Janz Team Ministries for over 50 years, changing its name to TeachBeyond in 2009. Listen in to hear more of the story of how TeachBeyond came about as we talk with George and Beverley Durance - well known for their family ties to the original Janz Team and their roles as former TeachBeyond President and Donor Services. “Being part of the Janz family played a huge, positive role in my life.” - Bev Durance “We said, ‘Wow, we would really like to do something for God, and we don't want to get old and wonder what it would have been like to do that.'” - George Durance “The biggest motivator [..] was just strictly a deep desire to say the same thing in the 21st century that our forefathers had said in the 20th century, and if we were going to do that, we had to change how we said that.” - George Durance “We started by praying. I think this has become a real hallmark of TeachBeyond – that we pray.” - George Durance “When you have faith, you always act. Faith is never sitting on your backside. You ask and then you act.” - George Durance “When you put your foot on the accelerator, don't take it off because you'll never find it again.” - George Durance “If you're going to cast a vision, you have to actually have a vision.” - George Durance “We see transformed lives, we see people changed across the globe, based on an educational initiative that the Holy Spirit has empowered and used.” - George Durance “Who would have guessed that I would follow in my mother's footsteps to process the donations to support this work?” - Bev Durance “We determined that we would take every opportunity to develop relationships with the donors […] Our job was to give the organization face for the many people who wanted to support the work.” - Bev Durance “I just love seeing God's hand of provision at work every day, and that transforms a person.” - Bev Durance “So how does one keep going? How does one persevere in doing good? As we know, we will reap the harvest if we keep persevering, and one of the ways is to remember right from the beginning that God has gone before and prepared hearts and that you're in the center of His will, no matter how hard or discouraged you feel.” - George Durance “Our missionaries are doing this – communicating the Gospel and discipling students in educational settings around the world – and I think my uncles would be so pleased to see the work they started continuing in this way.” - Bev Durance Learn more about TeachBeyond's annual Day of Giving here! A mother-daughter duo involved in a notorious body-sale scheme are scheduled to be resentenced on February 14th, 2025. Megan Hess, who ran Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors and Donor Services in Montrose, and her mother, Shirley Koch, had previously pleaded guilty to mail fraud in connection with the scheme. However, their original sentences—twenty years for Hess and fifteen years for Koch—were recently overturned by a federal appeals court. The court found errors in the way the District Court had calculated the offense levels and losses to victims.Support the show: https://www.montrosepress.com/site/forms/subscription_services/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What's driving this trend and what can nonprofits and charities do to reverse it? In this challenging time of the Covid-19 (SARS-CoronaVirus-2) outbreak, with people being encouraged to self-isolate as much as possible, we must remember that essential services need to be kept running. Many services are under major pressure, one of which is the South African National Blood Service. With people working from home, schools and universities closed, and fewer visitors to Shopping centres where they do blood drives, blood donations have dropped to a point where national blood banks have only enough for three days. This means there won't be enough blood for those who really need it - for those involved in accidents, for those undergoing operations or those having transfusions. Dr Pheello Lethola, Lead Consultant for Blood Donor services, is on hand to tell us why it's safe to continue giving blood, and the steps the SANBS are taking to ensure your safety, while ensuring we can save lives. Despite the perception to the contrary, African Americans are philanthropic - in fact, Blacks give more than 8% of their discretionary income to charity, more than any other racial group in America. Blacks donate 25% more of discretionary income than their white counterparts and nearly two-thirds of African American households give formally to charities to the tune of more than $11 billion per year. So why is the Black community perceived as a "taker" of charity rather than "giver"? On the next Another View we'll talk about African American philanthropy with Valaida Fullwood, author of "Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists", Vivian Oden, Director of Donor Services with the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, and Nicole Cleveland, Annual Fund Officer for WHRO Public Media. Join us for the next Another View, Friday, August 17 at noon on 89.5 WHRV-FM or stream us live on this blog!

As a donor, you can save and improve lives of individuals in need of a lifesaving transplant and those whose lives are impacted by tissue donation. Or you can volunteer as an ambassador, telling your story to community groups of how giving or receiving an organ or tissue donation has had an impact on you and your family. Or you can help get the word out through mailings, special projects, and participating in the big fundraising concert. Volunteering at any level helps connect people who have great need with those who can give of themselves.
