Connecticut made online gambling and sports betting legal a few years ago and ever since then, we've seen more and more young people get into gambling. And now, a new research survey conducted by a team at UConn found that 72% of undergraduate students at colleges in Connecticut reported participating in some form of gambling in the past year. We spoke with Mallory Schultz, Prevention Manager at Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling, about the results and what can be done to better educate the younger generation of gamblers. Election Day is less than six weeks away. Are you planning to vote in person this year? For those with disabilities, going to polling stations can be a real challenge. People with disabilities are less likely to vote than people without disabilities. Disabled voters can face many barriers to voting, from inaccessible polling places to restrictions on absentee ballots. This November, Connecticut voters could approve a ballot initiative that could create a pathway to give everyone access to absentee ballots, without needing an excuse making voting easier for voters with disabilities. Today, we hear about what access this looks like in our state and what can be done to improve it. If you are a voter with a disability, we want to hear from you. The Cambodian genocide took the lives of up to three million people - between 1975 and 1979. Many were forced to work at labor camps where they faced abuse, torture and starvation. But this is only part one of the story. The lesser known part is the story of Preah Vihear Mountain, where over forty thousand refugees were forced to climb to their death. Many Cambodian refugees ended up in refugee camps in Thailand. But instead of being processed as refugees, they were forced on buses and driven to Preah Vihear Mountain, which is part of a mountain range between Thailand and Cambodia. Returning to Cambodia was a devastating experience. Not only were they forced back into the country, but the mountain was filled with landmines, and refugees had no food or water. They were forced to climb down the mountain side, and those who didn't comply were gunned down Today, we heard from someone who experienced this firsthand. Bunseng Taing lives in Connecticut and is a survivor of this massacre. He joins us with his son, James Taing. Together, they produced the documentary film Ghost Mountain: The Second Killing Fields. How do you know if gambling is running your life and how do you begin to pull back on addictive habits? We got advice from morning show counselor, Julius Dudics. Social studies education in Connecticut public schools has been getting a major revamp. It's something we've covered on this program. This includes the statute requiring local Indigenous history that rolled out this year, and a statute in 2022 calling for Asian American and Pacific Islander studies, rolling out in the fall of 2025. The state legislature combined many of these mandates in 2021, calling for a "model curriculum." This curriculum should include Native American studies and AAPI studies, the bill stated, in addition to LGBTQ studies, climate change, financial literacy, military service and veterans, civics, media literacy, the principles of social-emotional learning, and racism. It was a long list and a tall order, and prompted the Connecticut State Department of Education to gather a group of experts on all of these fronts, and construct a new set of social studies standards. This hour, we hear from some of them and preview that document. [10:57] What are the benefits of mediation? [14:04] Different definitions of divorce - it's not always bad. [19:45] What is it like to be in divorce practice with her spouse? Key Takeaways:  Benefits of mediation: privacy, flexibility around unpredictable schedules, beneficial for children if both parents can agree, powerful to look back on the divorce in the future and see positives, can be cost-effective, you can be creative in designing things how you want them. Mediation is about acknowledging the situation around us. We control how we handle the circumstance, which is where you take back the power of the situation. Focus on how you can respond but not react to circumstances. Quotes:  “A mediation takes both people agreeing to opt into it. Even though we often have clients who are interested in it themselves, if their spouse doesn't come around to it, we just give them the best litigative support we can.” - Meghan Freed  “The life change can be incredibly transformative. It is an opportunity for both the leaning-in spouse, the person who wants to stay in the relationship, and the leaning-out space. It's not just transformative for the person who wants to leave the marriage; it can be really transformative for the person who doesn't want it.” - Meghan Freed Bio: Meghan is Managing Co-Partner of Freed Marcroft, a Connecticut law firm that devotes its practice exclusively to divorce and family law. As a mediator and collaborative attorney, Deborah works with clients to assist them in working out a settlement agreement in a cooperative and mindful problem-solving process that places great emphasis on reducing conflict, keeping children the focus, and empowering the parties to control the outcome of their divorce.  Deborah helps clients create quality solutions to meet their and their family's individualized needs, bringing outside professionals, such as therapists and divorce financial specialists, into the process to promote a more holistic result. Deborah has had extensive mediation and Collaborative Divorce training and has presented on both topics at seminars and conferences. The misogyny surrounding the Amber Heard-Johnny Depp trial has horrified advocates for survivors of intimate partner violence. This hour on Where We Live, we look at implications for survivors and the setback to the #MeToo movement. We hear from a survivor on how coping mechanisms can look like emotional detachment, and why it's misleading to judge a survivor on appearances. We acknowledge that male victims would feel silenced by this conversation and point to national statistics – 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner violence. And 1 in 7 women and 1 in 25 men have been injured by an intimate partner; 1 in 10 women have been raped by an intimate partner. Data is unavailable on male victims. This show focuses on the cultural assumptions pertaining to male versus female claims of domestic violence. We also look at data on the creation of new, fake social media accounts spreading disinformation in this trial, and what tech companies must do to regulate their social media platforms. Tom welcomes Chris Powell, Secretary, and Treasurer of GATA, the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee, to the show. Chris explains the reasons why gold is manipulated since governments want to control and monopolize currencies. Gold is an independent global reserve system, and it acts as a competitor to government monetary issuance. Central Banks for the past half-century have strived to control the gold price. Control of gold means the power to handle all the values of capital, goods, and services worldwide. Gold swaps and leasing have enabled central banks to create a vast imaginary supply of gold. Most of the "gold" the investment community owns either doesn't exist or is oversubscribed. If the market understood central banker actions in the gold market, the valuations would have to change. The question is, who owns the gold and how much do they have? Chris discusses a commodity hearing with Jeff Christian where he estimated the leverage in the gold market was nearly 100 to 1. India estimated the leverage at 92 to 1. This ratio indicates that there are numerous paper claims to that metal for every ounce in a vault. He explains the closing of the gold window in 1971 and possible intents for creating gold futures markets. That intention being to scare investors away from gold. Most large countries understand the scheme, but most investors remain unaware. Much of the world is not thrilled with the US dollar system since it controls most value today and is the primary driver for US imperialism worldwide. Chris outlines the various uses for silver and why it's also an industrial metal. Silver could become the kryptonite to central bankers and governments because it’s widely held. He argues that gold price suppression is used to control interest rates. Ordinarily, there are inverse relationships between rates and gold, and in the past, the gold carry trade acted as just such a mechanism of yield curve control. The movie "Marriage Story" garnered a great deal buzz and won a number of awards but is it accurate?  Is that what divorce really looks like?  On this episode Susan Guthrie speaks with Law Professor, Carolyn Kaas, to reveal not only what the movie got right, but more importantly, what it got OH SO WRONG!  If you are worried this is your future, be sure to listen today! The award winning movie, "Marriage Story" created quite a stir in the world of divorce and captured multiple award nominations for not only the film, but also the actors.  In fact, Laura Dern won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her portrayal of a divorce attorney reportedly patterned on celebrity divorce attorney, Laura Wasser.  But just how accurate is the depiction of divorce in the movie?  On this week's episode, Susan Guthrie speaks with Professor Carolyn Kaas, who will be incorporating the movie into her curriculum for the future lawyers of America as a teaching tool of what to do, and more importantly, of WHAT NOT TO DO.  Susan and Professor Kaas bring you the insider view of where the movie hits the nail on the head, and where it veers far off the factual path.  If you are facing divorce and are worried that the movie is a crystal ball of your future, find out what you can do to be sure that your divorce unfolds differently and learn from the teachable moments that Professor Kaas will be using to help launch the future of the legal profession! Highlights from the Episode: What about this movie does Professor Kaas feel makes it the "perfect teaching tool?" How does putting on the "glasses of trial prep" right from the beginning hijack your divorce process? How does their approach to the process change as many divorce attorneys practice longer and longer in the field? Is the "2nd Happy Halloween" ending of the movie a realistic portrayal? Is there a different function for a lawyer than to be a "weapon or a shield?" What is the worst part about the mediation "fail" in the movie? AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!  Be sure to listen - you'll want to watch the movie again with new eyes once you have listened to this episode! Learn More About Professor Kaas and Quinnipiac University School of Law:  Carolyn "Carrie" Kaas is an Associate Professor of Law at Quinnipiac University School of Law. You probably don't think about the Connecticut teachers' retirement fund all that much. That might be a good thing. But a new proposal to shift some of the burden of funding teachers' pensions -- from the state onto cities and towns -- could mean your overall cost of living goes up. On the latest podcast, Capitol bureau chief Chris Keating and Connecticut Council of Small Towns (COST) executive director Betsy Gara explain how Gov. Ned Lamont's plan might affect your bottom line.
