Scouting for Growth

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Denise Garth, a globally recognized InsurTech thought leader and Chief Strategy Officer at Majesco. In our talk today, we dive into the top trends shaping insurance and InsurTech as we head toward 2025—from next-gen technology enablers to constantly evolving customer expectations. Denise will share her insights on where the industry is headed, how to stay ahead, and why a collaborative mindset is crucial. KEY TAKEAWAYS What was happening in the resilience market in 2024, from both economic and risk standpoints, has had a huge operational impact on insurance companies. As a result, as we go into 2025, the reaction of loss ratios increasing, unprofitability, high interest rates, all the economic factors are forcing us to step back and see it as a wake-up call. We’re in the midst of business model and technology driven change. We’re finally realising our decades old operational models and technology foundations no longer meet the challenges and opportunities of this fast-changing risk, technology, and customer demographics world. It’s a race to the future because there’s a growing protection gap that we must address in a different way. We’ve been on a technology ride for 10-15 years , especially in InsurTech, but the last few months have been mind blowing with the pace of change and what the technology, like GenAI and IoT can do. They can help us do risk assessments better, give better customer experience and optimise the whole operation. Cloud computing is expanding the capabilities. We’ve got to fundamentally rethink the technology and business architecture of our solutions to optimise and take advantage of not just cloud computing but all the other technologies that are going to leverage cloud. BEST MOMENTS ‘We must think about how to underwrite and assess risks differently, more importantly how do we minimise the risk. We can’t keep growing the risk and the insurance costs, people can’t afford it.’ ‘Data is the lifeblood of this industry, and we’re coming to realise that we’ve got to democratise and demonetise data because everybody needs to have it.’ ‘MGAs and full-stack insurers are trying to think how insurance is going to be done, but also, what constitutes the insurance policy.’ ‘48% of part-time workers don’t have access to life or health insurance, they want a simple way of buying insurance, and they also want the risk about themselves by having Protection as a Service based on usage.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Denise Garth is an internationally recognized InsurTech thought leader and innovator, serving as Chief Strategy Officer at Majesco. With a passion for transforming the insurance industry, Denise leads global strategy, marketing, industry relations, and innovation—helping companies navigate disruption and harness new technologies to capture growth. Psychonauts is a platforming game developed by Double Fine Productions that first released in 2005. The game was initially published by Majesco Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, Xbox and PlayStation 2; Budcat Creations helped with the PlayStation 2 port. In 2011, Double Fine acquired the rights for the title, allowing the company to republish the title with updates for modern gaming systems and ports for OS X and Linux. Psychonauts follows the player-character Razputin (Raz) (voiced by Richard Horvitz), a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus to try to sneak into a summer camp for those with similar powers to become a "Psychonaut", a spy with psychic abilities. He finds that there is a sinister plot occurring at the camp that only he can stop. The game is centered on exploring the strange and imaginative minds of various characters that Raz encounters as a Psychonaut-in-training/"Psycadet" to help them overcome their fears or memories of their past, so as to gain their help and progress in the game. Raz gains use of several psychic abilities during the game that are used for both attacking foes and solving puzzles. Psychonauts was based on an abandoned concept that Tim Schafer had during the development of Full Throttle, which he expanded out into a full game through his then new company Double Fine. The game was initially backed by Microsoft's Ed Fries as a premiere title for the original Xbox console, but several internal and external issues led to difficulties for Double Fine in meeting various milestones and responding to testing feedback. Following Fries' departure in 2004, Microsoft dropped the publishing rights, making the game's future unclear. Double Fine was able to secure Majesco as a publisher a few months later allowing them to complete the game after four and a half years of development. Homebrew, when applied to video games, refers to games produced by hobbyists for proprietary hardware platforms that are not typically user-programmable, primarily video game consoles. These often use storage formats that make distribution difficult (such as ROM cartridges or encrypted CD-ROMs). Many systems have hardware restrictions to prevent unauthorized development. A non-professional developer for a system intended to be consumer-programmable, like the Commodore 64, is simply called a hobbyist (rather than a homebrew developer). The Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive[b] outside North America, is a 16-bit fourth-generation home video game console developed and sold by Sega. The Genesis was Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. Sega released it in 1988 in Japan as the Mega Drive, and in 1989 in North America as the Genesis. In 1990, it was distributed as the Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe, Ozisoft in Australasia, and Tec Toy in Brazil. In South Korea, it was distributed by Samsung as the Super Gam*Boy and later the Super Aladdin Boy.[c] Designed by an R&D team supervised by Hideki Sato and Masami Ishikawa, the Genesis was adapted from Sega's System 16 arcade board, centered on a Motorola 68000 processor as the CPU, a Zilog Z80 as a sound controller, and a video system supporting hardware sprites, tiles, and scrolling. It plays a library of more than 900 games on ROM-based cartridges. Several add-ons were released, including a Power Base Converter to play Master System games. It was released in several different versions, some created by third parties. Sega created two network services to support the Genesis: Sega Meganet and Sega Channel. 30.75 million first-party Genesis units were sold worldwide. In addition, Tec Toy sold an estimated three million licensed variants in Brazil, Majesco projected it would sell 1.5 million licensed variants of the system in the United States, and much smaller numbers were sold by Samsung in South Korea. By the mid-2010s, licensed third-party Genesis rereleases were still being sold by AtGames in North America and Europe. Many games have been re-released in compilations or on online services such as the Nintendo Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Steam. The Genesis was succeeded in 1994 by the Sega Saturn. After remaining in the negative territory for the most part of the session, the domestic equity market managed to settle flat with a positive bias on Tuesday amid buying in select financial and information technology (IT) counters.   The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 46,263, up 10 points, or 0.02 per cent while NSE's Nifty settled at 13,568, up 10 points, or 0.07 per cent. During the session, Sensex hit a high and low of 46,350.30 and 45,841.67 levels, respectively.   HDFC, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, and HCL Tech were the major contributors to the Sensex's recovery today. Bajaj Finance (up 4.7 per cent) was the biggest gainer on Sensex while HUL (down over 2 per cent) emerged as the top loser.   Moreover, Bajaj Finance entered the elite club of companies with a market capitalisation (market-cap) of Rs 3 trillion after the company's stock price hit a new high. The stock ended at Rs 5,128 on the BSE.   Volatilty index, India VIX, ended at 19.3 levels, down 0.29 per cent.   In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index outperformed the frontline indices as it gained 0.42 per cent to 17,733.87 while SmallCap index ended flat at 17,696 points.   Among sectoral indices, Nifty Media gained the most - up 1.79 per cent, followed by Nifty Metal and Nifty Financial Services indices (both up 0.77 per cent).   Among buzzing stocks, shares of Majesco hit a fresh record high of Rs 1,019 on the BSE after the company said its board has approved payment of interim dividend of Rs 974 per equity share for the financial year 2020-21. The stock, however, pared gains and ended 0.88 per cent higher at Rs 982.2.   Shares of DHFL were locked in the lower circuit for the second straight day after media reports suggested that the US-based asset management firm Oaktree Capital has emerged as the highest bidder in a revised round of bidding for the troubled mortgage lender.   Meanwhile, US-based fund Interups says it has Rs 13,500 crore as available capital for investment in Air India and is ready to invest "billions of dollars" in the Indian aviation sector.   Global markets   Asian stocks retreated on Tuesday as worries about increasing Covid-19 deaths and lockdowns overshadowed optimism about the roll-out of coronavirus vaccinations, just days after indexes hit record highs.   In commodities, oil slipped towards $50 a barrel as tighter lockdowns in Europe and forecasts of a slower demand recovery outweighed relief from the roll-out of coronavirus vaccines.

Wall Street indices ended lower overnight after US President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he had halted negotiations for additional stimulus until after the election. Consequently, the Dow fell 1.34 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 1.4 per cent,  and the Nasdaq dropped 1.57 per cent. Yesterday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned that the world’s largest economy was in for a weak recovery without more fiscal support. Central bank watchers will get a more detailed look at board members’ views on the economy when the Fed releases its minutes today. Asian stocks, meanwhile, were mixed to positive on Wednesday after recovery in Dow futures. Australia's ASX 200 was up 0.8 per cent, Hang Seng and Kospi gained 0.3 per cent each while Japan's Nikkei fell 0.3 per cent. Back home, investors will focus on the Q2 results, stock-specific developments, and Covid related newsflow.  At 7:30 AM, the SGX Nifty was trading 33 points up at around 11,710 levels, indicating a positive start for the domestic indices. On the results front, TCS will today kickstart the September quarter earnings of the FY21 for the IT companies. The IT major will also consider share buyback today. Apart from that, Majesco, MIC Electronics, Unity Infraprojects and Zee Learn are also scheduled to announce their quarterly earnings today. Reliance Industries may once again be in focus today after announcing that the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority would invest Rs 5,512 crore into Reliance Retail Ventures for 1.2-per cent stake. Sources have told Business Standard that Reliance is expected to divest only a small stake of 10-15 per cent in Reliance Retail, the proceeds of which will be used to fund acquisitions. Dixon Tech is expected to trade actively today after its arm Padget Electronics was selected by the Centre as one of the 16 proposals from marquee brands under two new flagship schemes, in a move expected to fetch Rs 11,000-crore additional investments in local electronics manufacturing. The RBI monetary policy panel will hold meetings from today till Friday to arrive at a policy decision. The addition of three new members to the committee lends a dovish tilt to the central bank’s think tank on policy and as such they may keep rates unchanged, analysts say. On the Covid front, India registered a rise of 72,106 in the number of new cases, taking the tally to 67.5 lakh. India's death toll stands at over 1 lakh. Meanwhile, media reports in the UK have said that the Oxford coronavirus vaccine might be rolled out in six months' time or even less. And in the end, a quick look at other top news. The government on Tuesday appointed Dinesh Kumar Khara as chairman of State Bank of India (SBI) for three years, effective today. Khara replaces Rajnish Kumar, who is stepping down after being at the helm for three years. Bajaj Finance yesterday gave its quarterly business update. The NBFC said that it will continue to provisioning for the coronavirus pandemic in Q2 FY21 to strengthen its balance sheet. In Q1, the lender took an additional contingency provision of Rs 1,450 crore for the pandemic, taking the total amount to Rs 2,350 crore as of June 30.

Our last episode had no news because this episode has all of the news. Join us as we talk about the fates, fortunes and foibles of the everyone from the province of Quebec to Nintendo's shareholders.  First up,Majesco did a reverse stock split, raising their stock price back to $2.56 from between 0.50-0.60 during the last few months. Masjeco is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange which requires a minimum of a $1 value per share, and so the company needed a maneuver that would raise the price before they became a penny stock.   Download Here.Subscribe on iTunes.Subscribe on Stitcher. By using a reverse stock split, Majesco essentially reduced the total number of shares available, raising the market price, but lowering the number of potential investors. Despite all the good the company has been doing with the Midnight City publishing arm, it's been losing money for quite a while. So we explain why it might be smarter to leave the stock market entirely.* Then in Finland, we assume that Hearthstone is a full-contact competitive sport. Otherwise the recent ruling from the Finnish Assembly, which filters players into the International eSports Federation world championships, that women and men had to compete in separate tournaments would be complete nonsense and sexist. While most know Hearthstone as the Blizzard trading card game where you buy fake cards, slide them on a touchscreen or with a mouse, and take your time to contemplate your next Magic the Gathering cosplay, in Finland it must something entirely different. We're guessing it's like lacrosse but with more fire.  Meanwhile, the province of Quebec has lowered the amount of tax credits available to video game companies. In the June 4 budget, the Liberal government decided to cut the tax credits by 20 per cent. Major studios like WB and Ubisoft are safe until 2019 because of agreements made with prior governments. We talk about how that might impact future jobs and why moving to Toronto so we can be best friends is your best move. At the same time, Nintendo's having a crisis of its own, as its shareholders seem to fundamentally misunderstand the company's brand and structure. Thanks to an underperforming Wii U and three years without profit, Nintendo's stock has been shrinking. Which has unsurprisingly made a few shareholders angry, asking questions like: Can the 3DS be twice as big and focus on gambling? Can I have some free stuff? Why are we even talking about video games? Lastly we revisit the world of eSports. We speculate on how to watch the Dota 2 world championships, The International. On a computer is the main consensus. We also do some speculation about the outcome of Evo. What none of could have predicted is the series of come from behind victories that actually ensued. Louffy won the Ultra Street Fighter IV tournament, well ahead of our best bet, Diago. Justin Wong didn't win the Killer Instinct tournament like we expected, but instead beat Chris G in an amazing underdog victory to defeat the long raining champ. Mango won the Super Smash Bros Melee. tournament, which seems expected for a game about random characters punching each other with motorcycles.  We also talk about our crippling addiction toHashteroids, Sony'sPS Now rental prices, a mysterious rich patron on Twitch,  andMighty No. 9's new crowdfunding campaign. And more on this news only Built to Play.  Our opening this week was the usual one: "Big Change" by Slave to the Squarewave from the Ontario Independent Music Archive. The Header image on this page is from Shoryuken.com.Check out their coverage of Evo everyone. Built to Play was written by Daniel Rosen and edited by Arman Aghbali. It's a new year, we are officially in the future, and we start it with point and click adventure games, fencing simulators and running away from zombies. War never changes... On this episode... We Played... Euan glows about Broken Age and Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons, despite not being able to talk about why they are amazing  Calum tells us that Deadpool is worth playing despite a mediocre game, and that the standalone release of DayZ has managed to preserve most of the jank from the mod. Which is good to hear.  Nidhogg takes over our collective brains. Throwing swords at each other has never been so fun. In News... Remember when EA said they couldn't add an offline mode to SimCity, and that it was impossible? Well they went and did it. About 6 months after anyone would care. Sony announce their Gaikai based streaming service, Playstation Now. Valve finally drops some details on their Steam Machines, which simultaneously ripping the touch screen out the controller. Nintendo pretty viscously slashes their WiiU sales predictions on top of publishing a substantial loss. The Last of Us DLC drops on Valentines Day. Appropriate. Episode 2 of The Wolf Amongst Us gets a date. Retail outlet GAME are still alive, and are doing pretty damn well due to next gen and GTAV Square Enix horribly botch their release of Final Fantasy VI for mobile. Turns out Zumba was doing pretty well for Majesco, so it's no wonder their stock dropped when they walked away from it Intro Music - There It Is - Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Outro Music - Honey Bee - Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) News Sting - News Intro - Maximilien (soundbible.com) All Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

Suggested by: Jonathan Slater (for Geek IO video game month) (again)TITO Rating: 0.5 (out of 10)My interpretation of the plot: In this trope fest that features everything from speaking out notes, ketchup packs, cardboard-cutout dialogue and bad bleary flashbacks,  Rayne is the half-human half-vampire Dhampir and the lead attraction in a carnival's freak-show in Romania. When she some how transports to a strange land, she meets a fortuneteller that tells that her mother was raped by the king of the vampires Kagan and she decides to destroy her father.Back story: The film is meant to be based on the Majesco video game of the same name. This movie cost $25 million (what what was it spent on) and only made $1.5 million (approx) at the box office however it made $3.5 million in Home Entertainment sales (June 2006)Now for the review...In The Name Of The King but for a "different" video game. Like The name of the king you have bad editing, cardboard dialogue, and all of the tropes you know and love from 800 different movies. Some other notes: Instead of Benny Hill music...this time he have trombones (yey *sarcasm* ). Speaking of sounds, why are we being reminded that horses are still the main form of transportation. I was so tempted to give this movie a 1, for the boobies but seeing they kept using ketchup packs for blood. Speaking of boobies, why did the middle of the film turn into a porn (I'm sure that's not the source material.) I sear without all of the flashbacks, this movie would have been 60 minutes. Also, you don't end your movie staring into the camera...she crept me out and left a bad taste in my mouth. This had been fun! If you have any feedback or suggestions, you can email them directly to me at thechefwonder @ gmail . com (remove the spaces) or tweet them to me twitter.com/TheDaleCampbell and huge thanks to CJ and the Geek IO crew for letting me release the trannies!

Those two wharf rats that go by the names-o-Mark and Jeff be runnin out thar cannons ta take on thar olde rival -ye Black Privateer! It's time for our second annual International Talk Like a Pirate Gameopolis Podcast. Mark and Jeff sail from port to port in search of a number of eclectic gaming related topics. After starting with the Dusty Old Box --a dusty olde treasure chest to be more exact-- we address some Listener Feedback and then launch into our first main topic --our Pirate themed Talk-Like-A-Pirate game: Cheapass Games' Captain Treasure Boots. Jeff gives us a brief over view of Capt Treasure Boots and describes his tricked-out copy featuring little teeny tiny pirate ships purchased from an online jewelry supply store. We'll post pictures of these teeny tiny square-riggers on the Gameopolis Flickr Page. Next, Mark and Jeff set sail in search of games ported from the tabletop to the portable electronic device. We span old and new games that have "crossed over to the other side". Lastly, we flip this topic on its head and discuss games --one in particular-- that has made this trek in the opposite direction: Skirmish Wars Advance Tactics. Jeff talks about his version of SWAT that he will be taking up to the Carnage 2010 Gaming Convention.
