Behind every great man in a powdered wig is a remarkable woman. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we're reading about some of the women who helped shape our country at its founding. On the 'Talk of Iowa' Book Club, host Charity Nebbe and expert readers discuss 'Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation' by Cokie Roberts. The book shares stories of the many roles women played in the Revolutionary War and the founding of the United States.

The Declaration of Independence said all men are created equal. But what did that mean to the women who heard those words and knew they were being lied to? Who were the women the founding fathers never mentioned — and what did they do about it? And, if America was founded on the idea of freedom, why did it take another century — and a civil war — to even begin to make good on that promise? Afua and Peter turn the founding of America upside down, telling the story of 1776 through the women the Declaration forgot: a teenage poet who became the first Black woman in history to publish a book of poetry in English, and an enslaved woman who walked into a lawyer's office and used the Constitution to abolish slavery in Massachusetts.(0:00) The Declaration of Independence is about to turn 250 — but whose freedom was it really for?(1:43) Legacy Plus — bonus episodes, early access, and fewer ads 2:00 Why enslaved Americans didn't wait to be freed — they were already fighting(5:36) Lord Dunmore's proclamation and the moment thousands of Black men chose their side(7:48) Phillis Wheatley: kidnapped at seven, named after the slave ship that took her(9:59) From chalk letters on a wall to mastering Greek — the making of a prodigy(12:09) The court case where she had to prove she wrote her own poems(14:23) Sent to London as pro-slavery propaganda — and why it spectacularly backfired(16:12) Published in London, ignored in Boston: the first Black woman to publish poetry in English(17:23) The poem she sent to George Washington — and why he actually wrote back(18:47) They met in Cambridge in 1776: the Virginia enslaver and the young woman he couldn't ignore(20:04) How post-revolutionary America still wouldn't publish her — and how she built a subscription model 250 years before Substack(21:50) She reached Washington, Jefferson, Thomas Paine — and died at 30 in a boarding house(23:34) Elizabeth Freeman: the woman who heard the Declaration read aloud and walked straight to a lawyer(25:11) "Where's my freedom?" — the most direct question anyone asked of the founding fathers(27:05) The iron-shaped scar she refused to hide — and how she weaponised it(27:41) Bett v Ashley: the case that abolished slavery in Massachusetts(31:36 She wins not just her freedom but freedom for every enslaved person in the state — then changes her name to Elizabeth FreemanJoin Legacy Plus for bonus episodes, early access, Q&A's, fewer adverts and more.legacy.supportingcast.fm Instagram: @originallegacypodcastTikTok: @legacy_productionsSubstack: peterfrankopan.substack.com | afuahirsch.substack.comJoin Legacy+ for bonus episodes, early access, Q&A's, fewer adverts and more.legacy.supportingcast.fmStay connected with Legacy:Instagram: @originallegacypodcastTikTok: @legacy_productionsExplore more from Peter and Afua — essays, sources, and ideas: Substack: peterfrankopan.substack.com | afuahirsch.substack.com Hosted on Acast. So close to the semiquincentennial, it's great to see a novel focused on the life of Abigail Adams, a woman appreciated even in her own time—especially by her husband of more than half a century, John Adams, the second president of the United States—but not, at the time, for her determination that her new country should also extend liberty to its female citizens. Of course, Abigail Adams has received considerable attention since for her views on the need for adult women to control their own futures, but in the process much of the complexity of her life, her character, her surroundings, and her family has dropped out of the discussion. In A Founding Mother: A Novel of Abigail Adams (William Morrow, 2026), Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie dive into the story of Abigail's and John's long and loving marriage, their political service and economic problems, their time at home and abroad, and their six children—four of whom survived to adulthood but not all of whom thrived once they got there. It's all wonderfully rich and complex, both emotionally and in terms of the history revealed here—enhanced by the feminine perspective. The American Revolution as it happened was not the neat story told in school but messy, sprawling, contentious, risky, and eventful, and the formation of the resulting republic reflected all those competing trends. Unless you're a historian specializing in this place and time, I can guarantee you will find out things you never knew, and in entertaining ways. Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie have published numerous novels, together and separately. Find out more about their joint projects here. C. P. 1. The Founding Mothers and Augustan Propaganda(1)Guest author Emma Southon notes that historians like Livy wrote during the reign of Augustus to reshape early Roman history to justify the return to monarchy. These writers aimed to portray Rome as the most virtuous and god-beloved nation. A primary narrative involves the Sabine women, who were kidnapped to populate the new city. Led by Hersilia, these women eventually intervened in a battle, acting as the "glue" that turned a war between enemies into a family conflict. Southon contrasts the virtuous Hersilia with Tarpeia, a "bad" woman who betrayed Rome for luxury. (2)

Breadwinner Energy® Is No Longer Just Coaching We Are Building an InstitutionIn this episode, I'm sharing something massive.Breadwinner Energy® is evolving from a coaching brand into a Licensing + Leadership Institution for women who are ready to build real wealth, real power, and real legacy together. For years, women have been told to build alone.Alone in business.Alone in leadership.Alone in wealth building.I'm done with that model. This next era of Breadwinner Energy® is about infrastructure, intellectual property, licensing, leadership, and putting powerful women inside something bigger than just another program. After over a decade across the service industry and coaching industry, I saw the same pattern:Brilliant women.Powerful ideas. But still building alone.Still capped by time, energy, visibility, and reach.Licensing changes that.Instead of building next to each other we build under the same institution, using shared infrastructure, shared brand authority, and shared visibility.Women will now be able to:• License the Breadwinner Energy® brand, IP, and frameworks• Be trained in thought leadership and brand representation• Be listed inside a public directory of certified leaders• Be featured across podcast, media, and institution opportunities• Be part of a high-level Alumni Leadership MastermindThis is not a course. This is not just a certification. This is institutional placement. The certification process is 4 months and teaches:• Thought Leadership• Brand Standards + Representation• Licensing Integrity + Use• Movement-Level Leadership• Wealth + Sovereignty Business InfrastructureFirst Certification Class Begins:April 6, 2026The first 15 women entering this institution will be our Founding Mothers. They will receive:• Priority placement in the public directory• Early access to leadership and collaboration opportunities• Founding level positioning inside the institution• Special recognition as first movers in this modelThere are only 15 spots.Annual Licensing Fee: $3,333 per yearThis includes:Directory ListingAlumni Leadership MastermindInstitution Access + OpportunitiesBrand + Licensing RightsPrivate + Founding Enrollment is currently open.Initial Enrollment Window:Open through February 28After Founding spots fill, pricing and placement will change. This is about women becoming breadwinners of their own lives.Breaking generational cycles.Building wealth in community.Creating power structures that include us — not exclude us.This is not just business scaling. This is movement building. If you are a woman who knows your work is bigger than your current container…If you are ready to stop building alone…If you are ready to step into leadership at an institutional level…This is your invitation.Follow & DM me on IG: https://www.instagram.com/itstaydaniels_llc/Join the Waitlist: https://itstaydaniels.myflodesk.com/headquarters Join the Free Fire Pit: https://www.skool.com/breadwinner-energy-club-7485 Breadwinner EnergyWomen in leadershipWomen licensing programCoaching industry evolutionWomen building generational wealthLicensing intellectual property coachingThought leadership certification for womenWomen business institutionFemale leadership certificationWomen business licensing modelHigh level mastermind for women entrepreneursBuild wealth in community womenWomen business directory listingFemale founder leadership programInstitution model for women entrepreneursWhy I Moved Away From One-on-One CoachingThe Breadwinner Energy® Licensing + Certification ModelCertification Program DetailsFounding Mothers — First 15 WomenLicensing Investment + StructureEnrollment WindowWhy This Matters (Bigger Than Business)If You Feel Called Into This LevelKEYWORDS (SEO)

Jane Angvik was an Anchorage Charter Commission member who drafted the founding document that unified the city and borough of Anchorage in 1975. On July 1, 2024, she administered the oath of office at the inauguration of Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance. Jane has spent her life in service to Alaska whether at her first job for the Anchorage borough as a planner upon her arrival in 1973, working for the Alaska Federation of Natives, serving on the Anchorage Assembly, or training the next generation of leaders through Alaska Women Ascend, the ways that she has contributed to our state and city are many and profound. This episode will discuss much of Jane's life including her childhood in Minnesota and her meeting of her husband Vic Fischer – a founding father of Alaska who we sadly lost last year at the age of 99. This episode will not include Jane's time on the charter commission. That period of her life, which so profoundly impacts what Anchorage is today,  will be its own episode released next week.

Trailblazing Journalist Lynn Povich on Becoming the First Female Senior Editor of Newsweek and the Legacy of the First Female Class Action Lawsuit It Took to Make that Possible

I'd Rather Be Reading

I'm pulling out the champagne and raising a glass to I'd Rather Be Reading, my passion project and the work of my life, a show that celebrates nonfiction books (and, occasionally, some fiction books and children's books and cookbooks, too) which aired its first episode three years ago today, on June 7, 2021. Happy three-year anniversary, listeners! Our very first episode on the show was a conversation with Lisa Napoli about her book Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR, about, at its core, women in journalism. As such, to tie it all together with a bow today, our anniversary special features a trailblazing woman in journalism: the dynamic Lynn Povich. Simply put, my career would not exist without Lynn's courage. Let's go back in time to the early 1970s. Lynn was working at Newsweek, and at the time, that magazine, like others at the time as well, only hired men as writers. Women did the researching and reporting, but the men got the byline. Lynn writes in her 2012 book The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace that Newsweek had a serious problem—sexism—and that, in her words, “we all accepted it—until we didn't.” Lynn and a group of 46 other women ultimately sued the magazine for sex discrimination, becoming the first women in the media to sue for sex discrimination and taking part in the first female class action suit. Lynn's book, Good Girls Revolt, is the first full account of the Newsweek suit, which, by the way, was later turned into a series on Amazon Prime that I loved. Lynn writes that, prior to the lawsuit, “I don't think it occurred to many of us that we could actually change the system” and continues “in 1970 we challenged the system and changed the conversation in the news media for the women who participated in the lawsuits. The struggle rerouted our lives and bonded us and gave many of us opportunities.” Lynn went on to become Newsweek's first female senior editor in 1975 and had a 25-year career at the magazine; she left it in 1991 and has since become editor-in-chief of Working Woman magazine and managing editor and senior executive producer for MSNBC.com. Lynn is from a famed journalism family, and she edited a book of columns by her father, renowned Washington Post sports journalist Shirley Povich called All Those Mornings…At the Post; her brother, by the way, is Maury Povich, and her sister-in-law is Connie Chung. I'd love to be at that family dinner table! Lynn's husband is also a journalist; his name is Stephen Shepard, and he is the former editor-in-chief of Business Week and founding dean of the graduate school of journalism of the City University of New York. There's no better person I could think of to mark this important day for our show than Lynn Povich, and I'm excited for you to hear from her today.
