A new survey from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre is shedding light on people's attitudes towards sexual violence…The research shows that many people retain victim-blaming views, with 1 in 5 believing that there are ‘a lot' of false rape claims, and 1 in 6 people saying that someone who is raped while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is partly responsible for that happening to them.Joining Kieran to discuss this is CEO of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, Rachel Morrogh and Clinical Psychotherapist Stephanie Regan.Image: @DublinRCC on Twitter

In this episode we dive into a lesser-known compilation from Dundee, 1996, titled 'After the Storm', which was created to raise funds for 18U. We explore the tracks, uncovering a mix of genres from 80s power ballads to 90s dance and country influences. There's a lot of colourful and, shall we say, sometimes questionable, musical efforts showcased in this CD, and as ever we humorously navigate the ups and downs of their listening experience. Highlights include oddities like George McFarlane's rap experiment and a cheerful dance track by Bliss. They wrap up with an existential crisis triggered by Real Gone Kid by Deacon Blue. But it's all for your entertainment, so it's all good. Oh, and yeah cause this week is particularly heavy the first 18 minutes or so are about Trump winning the US election. This episode was provided in Partnership with Alliant Insurance Services. We are experiencing a surge in students nationwide who are in need of mental health supports. Involvement in school athletics has the potential to greatly benefit both the physical and mental health and well-being of students. However, student athletes often face enormous pressures to succeed, both athletically and academically. For any student athlete, there is also the challenge of learning to cope with the emotional rollercoaster that inevitably comes with athletic competition. In addition, for many student athletes, the coach is the school employee who knows that student better than any other staff member, and may be the first to recognize subtle changes in the student's demeanor or behavior. In this podcast episode, participants will learn about the legal requirements relevant to addressing student mental health issues, the critical role of the coach and athletic director, and key protocols for creating a safety net to support all student athletes. Following our 1st Corinthians sermon series, Damascus Road is offering a late Spring class exploring key themes in 1st Corinthians. This class will be co-taught by DRCC's retired Founding Pastor, Richard Fredericks, PhD, and Teaching Team Pastor, Michelle Rader, M.A. They will explore in greater depth some of the rich themes of 1st Corinthians, especially focusing on Paul's narrative of how the “message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor 1:18).They will explore how that “foolishness” plays out in counter-cultural ways for Christian community, including transformed ways of understanding weakness, unity, interdependence, honoring others, and interpersonal relations. If you want to “go deeper” in 1st Corinthians, this class is for you!

Last week Michelle shared some really good advice with us that she gleaned from the apostle Paul's introduction to the letter to the Corinthians; she said that if you have to deliver a hard word to someone it's a really good idea to start with the positives before you get to the negatives. That's a good word for all of us.But this week we will get to Paul's hard word for the Corinthian church which is pretty dramatic. Paul starts chapter 3 by saying – and this is my paraphrase – “you guys are acting like a bunch of babies! Grow up, why don't ya!” Seriously, that's what he says; check it out for yourself. The apostle Paul uses the same insult that many of us have screamed in exasperation at an annoying sibling or immature friend. (I wonder if any of the Corinthian believers heard the letter and thought to themselves “I know you are but what am I?”)But what in the world created this level of frustration for Paul? What drove him to be so harsh with a whole community of Jesus-followers?! And, here's a scary thought: what would the apostle Paul say to us if he showed up to DRCC on Sunday morning?!Join us this week as we continue our journey through the letter to the Corinthian church by focusing in on chapters 3 & 4 (for those that like to do homework and read the text ahead of time). This week we will add some color and background to Paul's words and see if we can locate ourselves in the story of the Corinthian church.
Come join us this Sunday as we explore the promise that Christ made to his disciples the very same night that he was betrayed and arrested. In John 14:18, Jesus comforts his disciples with these powerful words: “I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you.” Apart from Christ, we are spiritual orphans, but in Christ, we have been adopted into God's family. Together, we will take a closer look at Romans 8 and what all of this means for us and how we are to live in 2023.DRCC will be joining churches throughout the world this weekend in celebrating Orphan Sunday, an opportunity to explore God's heart for orphans and the role that the church is being called to play.

Get out and about to serve! Our Lord and Savior, Jesus, came to serve! For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45DRCC loves to serve! Why?Because we, like many of the people who came before us that we encounter in the Bible, have encountered the living God, and are compelled to “get out” there and serve others! When we realize how much God loves us, and we see His glory, we are filled with joy and we are overflowing with God's love and we share it with others in actionable ways, loving our families and our neighbors—whether they are around the block or around the world.Through our service to one another, our relationships with one another and with our Creator grow deeper and stronger. We enjoy the fruit of the rhythm of service! So join us as we worship together and “get out” there and serve together!

Dear Family and Friends,It hardly seems possible that I preached my first sermon at our church in 2001. I hope you can join us this Sunday as I will be preaching my last sermon at DRCC. While Erika and I feel deep sadness, sadness isn't the only emotion we feel. We are grateful for the many kingdom stories we have been privileged to be a part of. I am grateful to have the opportunity to speak to you one last time on Sunday to share my heart with you—to convey both my gratitude to you and to encourage you to stay rooted in Jesus. I invited Dr. Wang to bring the message this Sunday. I don't want to give anything away, but you will see this weekend how the funds that were raised for Ukraine from our church is impacting Ukrainian refugees in Poland – there is a cool story here, but I'll let Dr. Wang share that. We are launching a three-week series this Sunday, looking at some revolutionary ideas Jesus unleashed that were game changers. This weekend, I will look at one of the most remarkable passages in the book of Acts. It documents how the church was formed, how it functioned, and what it was known for in its earliest days. This passage is crucial if we are to catch the vision for us as a church and as individuals. Imagine a community where we continue to form and sustain a culture where people bring people to meet Jesus, where every follower of Jesus is on a pathway of growth, and disciples making disciples become the norm. Imagine people embodying the church in their homes, neighborhoods, workplaces and every domain of our region and beyond. Imagine a place in our world where each person discovers their soul's innermost purpose and missional impulse to make a difference in our world (where anyone can come, no one is perfect, and extraordinary things start to happen). Then imagine every individual in DRCC fully grasping what God offers us in Jesus and living out of that identity – a child of God, redeemed, restored and reconciled; knowing that in Jesus, your past has no power over you and your future is secure. And in Jesus, you get to be part of the church that hell can't stop!

Hope! We all hope for something. Lack of hope is death to the human soul. But what happens when the thing you are hoping for is taking a very long time or worse, never happens? What do you do with the weary burden of hopelessness? Where can we find fresh and abiding hope? We are looking at the Christmas story these days from the lens of a weary world. A world that Jesus came into and called all the weary ones to exchange their weariness for His rest. Join us this weekend as we experience the thrill of hope Christmas brought to people then and brings to people now (and don't miss part 2 of our special video production of the Christmas story told through the words of DRCC kids!).
This week we continue our Philippians series - following up on last week's stirring description of greatness according to Christ. Philippians 2:5-11 is clearly the climax of the letter - really of New Testament theology as a whole. We'll look at the rest of chapter 2 and Paul's description of what it looks like to live in light of the Christ Hymn. We'll see that Paul envisions lives that mirror Christ's life - lives of sacrificial service, lives of love and joy, lives that shine and bring light to others. In a dark and crooked world, Paul envisions Christians living in communities that are bright little points of light, beacons of hope and comfort. That vision is just as much our call today as it was in Philippi. We'll also be celebrating Richard and Sallie Fredericks, the founding couple of Damascus Road Community Church. We will share the story of how DRCC came to be, and the vision that continues to guide and radiate out the love of Christ into our community. Whether you're new or been around a long time, you won't want to miss the opportunity to celebrate this wonderful couple.

Non-consensual sharing of nude photos Over the last few days reports surfaced of a large scale leak of nude photos affecting a huge amount of Irish women. Tens of thousands of photos of women and girls have been stored and shared across a number of different forums. It includes nude images of minors and images taken without consent. This morning on Dublin Talks we spoke to Linda Hayden, founder of The Victims Alliance. They have been working tirelessly to identify and support victims of the leak. UNCUT: This is an interview I had with Noeline Blackwell, CEO of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC). I interviewed her for episode 5, about online shaming and the explosion of allegations and accusations that came out online against people in 2017. For the first time in this series, I thought it was important that I release the entire interview unedited and uncut, as the amount of important information in it needed to be heard. Noeline speaks about the impact things like the #MeToo campaign had online for the DRCC and for victims here in Ireland and adds a huge amount of context as to why many feel the need to share their stories online. She talks about false allegation rates, unreported incidents and how few of those reported cases even wind up resulting in a conviction. Episode 5 will be out early January, but until then enjoy this important conversation, thank you for the support in 2017, have a fantastic xmas and I'll speak to you in the New Year. For support or more information about the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre visit drcc.ie or call their 24 hour helpline on 1800-77-88-88.

The life of discipleship is a life of repentance and faith. But biblical repentance is an often misunderstood concept. On one hand, some may think repentance is nothing but apologizing and continuing in sin, but on the other hand, some live in constant fear that their repentance is not good enough for God.Join us as we explore answers to repentance and faith and how we can live in accordance to God’s glorious grace. It is our prayer that you be Spirit-filled and blessed by what you will discover on this unique edition of Alive in Christ Radio LIVE.During this hour, we will learn how God’s perfect love and faithfulness can help us walk hand-in-hand with God—leading us through this life into a life of total victory, in all things, through His anointing, discernment, and great comfort.Tonight's Special Guest: Roger Record of the band, Holy RainHoly Rain began 10 years ago at Damascus Road Community Church (DRCC) when Pastor Roger Record felt the calling to gather together a group of talented musicians to use their gifts for something bigger. God has blessed DRCC with singers, songwriters, and musicians that desire to have deep, intimate worship and they found that when they combine their gifts for the glory of God and leave their ego’s at the door, they create something much bigger than they could ever have been on their own. Over the past 10 years, Holy Rain has produced three CD’s and led an annual night of worship combining both corporate worship and original songs for members of the community and congregation. Another deep desire of Holy Rain is to look after the orphan (James 1:27). 100% of the proceeds from their albums go towards supporting orphans and missions projects in countries all around the world including Honduras, Nicaragua, India and South Africa. Worship of the living God and serving the least of these is our passion.
