Part four of the grand exposé of Pliny's fake letter about the Christians. Host Chris Palmero continues the close reading and exposes strange elements of this text that are rarely discussed. Anyone who listens to this episode can learn about the late origin of the term "Christian," about the baffling lack of any geographical references in Pliny's letter, about how Pliny somehow seems to be the first person in history to successfully distinguish Christians from Jews, about Pliny's very uncharacteristic way of dealing with the problem he's facing, and about how Pliny's Letter borrows copiously from the New Testament and the ancient Christian martyria. It's all part of BORN IN THE SECOND CENTURY's forced march to capture the unassailable fortress of Epistulae 10.96 and 10.97.Opening reading: A fake letter from the emperor Hadrian to a Roman governor sheds light on how the early Christians forged imperial documents about persecution.Patreon: www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcenturyWebsite: facebook.com/BornInTheSecondCenturyE-mail: secondcenturypodcast@gmail.comMusic: Pompeii Gray on Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud00:47 - Reading: HADRIAN, Rescript to Fundanus.29:37 - OPENING Remarks.42:56 - Close Reading RE-INTRO.45:27 - REDCARD: Excessive Length.50:50 - REDCARD: Lack of Geographical Reference.56:36 - REDCARD: Persecution Trope.58:21 - REDCARD: On Precedents.1:06:43 - REDCARD: No Knowledge of Christians.1:12:36 - REDCARD: Use of the Term "Christian."1:31:36 - REDCARD: Christians Fully Distinguished from Jews.1:39:32 - REDCARD: Intertextuality with Acts and the Gospels.1:48:34 - CLOSING Remarks.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcentury)

The Roman official Pliny the Younger supposedly wrote a letter that mentioned the Christian religion, all the way back in 112 AD. If this letter is genuine, it represents a major threat to BORN IN THE SECOND CENTURY. Therefore, host Chris Palmero launches a new multi-part series: the most comprehensive effort of the past three hundred years to prove that this letter of Pliny was in fact a forgery; a Christian forgery of the late second century in the spirit of Hadrian's fake rescript to Fundanus. Anyone who listens to this episode can learn about the background of Pliny the Younger and his famous letter; about the many arguments against its authenticity that will be presented in this series; about how Tertullian's apparent early use of the letter doesn't prove its authenticity, about whether Pliny himself was a historical figure, about whether Pliny's writings as a whole are genuine, and about the strange history of Book Ten of Pliny's Epistulae, in which this troublesome text occurs.Opening reading: Pliny writes to Tacitus, expressing pride in the genius of both men, and hopes that they'll be remembered by posterity. Nineteen centuries later they still stand, thrusting out forbidding hands like the Pillars of the Argonath guarding the secrets of the true origins of Christianity. But I've seen much more formidable objectives. And I propose to move immediately upon their works.Patreon: www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcenturyWebsite: facebook.com/BornInTheSecondCenturyE-mail: secondcenturypodcast@gmail.comMusic: Pompeii Gray on Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud00:00 - Reading: PLINY THE YOUNGER to Tacitus, Epistulae 9.14.12:04 - OPENING Remarks.15:09 - INTRODUCTION to the Pliny Letter Series.24:50 - On TERTULLIAN'S Supposed Use of the Pliny Letter.39:37 - The Quest of the Historical PLINY.52:08 - Whether Pliny's Epistulae are GENUINE.1:03:52 - The ARGUMENTS against the Pliny Letter (the Red Cards).1:19:38 - The Strange History of Book Ten of Pliny's Epistulae.1:32:46 - CLOSING Remarks.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/borninthesecondcentury)

A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 19 Redefining Leadership in a Traditional Industry with Mary Powell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Mountain Power Corporation Welcome to Episode 19. I am joined by Mary Powell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Mountain Power in Vermont.  This Episode 19 presents a unique CEO profile in Mary Powell.  Many of the CEO’s that we have featured in the past have come from science, technology and engineering disciplines or law or finance backgrounds.  Mary was raised in an artistic household on New York’s Upper West Side.  Her father was a hardworking, constantly auditioning New York actor.  Mary attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts made widely famous by the 1980 dramatic film Fame based on student life at the School of Performing Arts. Mary studied art with a particular passion for charcoal drawing with its kinetic form of big, bold, and fast movement.  She was graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts from Keene State College in New Hampshire.  Her career experience prior to Green Mountain Power included a breath of variety – for a large fund manager specializing in money markets, for state government, and in banking. Through our conversation it will become very apparent how Mary’s creative and liberal arts background and variety of experience renders her as a uniquely effective leader in a utility industry that most often abides by tradition. I’d like to express our special thanks to the clients of Lyceum Leadership Consulting that enable us to bring you this podcast.  Thanks for listening.  We can’t improve without your feedback – write us through our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com and subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts.  See you next time.   Informative and Helpful Links An April 3rd 2013 article on architecture website Arch Daily entitled “Can Architecture Make Us More Creative?” by Jonathan C. Power’s 2016 electric utility residential customer satisfaction study. Mary has served as president and chief executive officer for GMP since 2008.  She initiated and implemented a strategic and comprehensive restructuring of the company that dramatically transformed GMP, and she has been the backbone of a cultural transformation and service quality improvement.  Fast, fun, and effective is her motto.  Under Mary’s leadership, GMP became the first utility in the world to become a member of B Corp, showing a commitment to use energy as a force for good. Mary has delivered on an ambitious energy vision to provide low-carbon, low-cost and highly reliable power to Vermonters.  As a result, GMP became the first utility to offer to help customers go off-grid, built Vermont’s largest wind farm, made Rutland, Vermont, the Solar Generation Capital of New England, and installed smart grid technology across GMP’s service territory. In 2012, Mary led the acquisition of Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS), with a promise to generate $144 million in savings for customers.  GMP has grown from serving 88,000 customers in 2008 to serving over 260,000 customers, with revenues of more than $640 million and $2 billion in assets. And in 2015, Mary led another partnership with Tesla, with GMP becoming the first utility anywhere to offer customers the Tesla Powerwall battery. In 2014, Mary was recognized by Powergen as the Woman of the Year, in 2015 The Burlington Free Press named her Vermonter of the Year, in 2016 Fast Company named Mary one of the 100 most creative people in business, and in 2017, Mary was named one of the top 25 Most Influential Women of the Mid-Market by CEO Connection.    Your host Thomas B. Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2018

Saludos Lucilio. He empezado a ser mi propio amigo." Κλέανθης) (circa 331 a.C.
