Send a textIn August 2021, the Taliban took back control in Afghanistan. Women face unprecedented repression. They can't go to school or work; public parks are banned to them; they are not allowed to speak or sing too loudly. Are we turning away?“This is the time for the international community and for other countries, especially the EU, to step in and to make sure they respond to the crisis in Afghanistan and stand with the women of Afghanistan and to do everything they can to protect their rights,” says Fereshta Abbasi, from Human Rights Watch.Diplomats in Geneva have backed a powerful UN fact-finding mission for Afghanistan.“As an ambassador, and as a woman, [I know that] women have fought for decades if not centuries for their rights, and I also personally do not want to see a back-peddling on those rights that we, and generations of brave women before us, have fought for for so long,” says Deike Potzel, EU Ambassador to the UN in Geneva. Women inside Afghanistan need to know there is support.“Women and girls in Afghanistan resist in ways that don't form a single movement. It's about 1,000 quiet and important uprisings and day-to-day revolutions: a resistance that is fierce and creative to show that they exist and that they will never accept that kind of domination,” says Sahar Fetrat, an Afghan campaigner for women's rights. The fact-finding mission can gather evidence and hold Afghanistan's government and individual Taliban leaders to account. But ordinary women across Europe can help too.“Here in Europe, in Geneva, we have the wonderful opportunity to actually make our voices heard and to be heard. So use that chance, get engaged. Open your eyes and then do something,” says Potzel. Join some inspiring women talking to Imogen Foulkes on Inside Geneva.Get in touch! In cooperation with the Austrian Research Foundation for International Development (ÖFSE)Irene Horejs in conversation with Kathryn Nwajiaku-Dahou and Stephan KlingebielDOES THE „ZEITENWENDE“ MEAN THE END OF INTERNATIONAL AID?At the beginning of 2025, President Trump started his 2nd Presidency by shutting down USAID and 90% of US foreign aid. The “stop work order” hit aid organizations and vulnerable communities particularly in Africa like a bomb. Aid organizations stopped working from one day to the other, US financed medicines stopped being distributed, health centers and medicine stores remained closed. Some UN agencies like UNHCR and WFP, both highly dependent on US finance, were forced to drastically reduce their operations and staff– all with a devastating impact on the affected populations. However, Donald Trump was not the first one to cut down foreign aid agencies and budget. In 2020, Boris Johnson dissolved DFID, the highly prestigious aid agency of the UK and merged parts of it into the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. More recently, other EU donor countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Austria reduced their aid budgets and framed them into short term interests like curbing migration, securing trade and others.Does the “Zeitenwende” mean the end of international solidarity and of development as a global good coordinated by a set of norm giving, multilateral institutions? Are we confronted to a new politization of aid? Or is this only an “easy” way to save strained budgets in face of the new imperative of rearmament? What is the impact on developing countries, affected populations and how do they react? Are there any alternative means to finance not only humanitarian aid, social and economic development but also the necessary actions against climate change?Introductory Remarks:Werner Raza, Scientific Director, ÖFSEKathryn Nwajiaku-Dahou, Director of the Politics and Governance programme at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), UKStephan Klingebiel, Head of the research department „Inter- and Transnational Cooperation“ at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS)Moderator:Irene Horejs, Former Director of DG ECHO and former EU Ambassador to Peru, Mali and Niger This second event under the focus “Humanity in der Zeitenwende” is organised in cooperation with the Austrian Research Foundation for International Development (ÖFSE).
Irene Horejs in conversation with Claude Maon, Knut Dörmann, Günther Barnet and Shoura Zehetner-HashemiHUMANITARIANS UNDER ATTACKDoes the “Zeitenwende” threaten International Humanitarian Law and humanitarian action? Since WWI and WWII, the international community has established a series of legal and institutional instruments to reduce the horrors of war and put efforts of prevention and peaceful resolution of conflicts in the centre of multilateral policy. The Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols constitute the core of International humanitarian law (IHL) – the “ius in bello” – whose purpose is to protect the lives and dignity of civilians, civilian infrastructure, access to food, water, medicine and humanitarian support – to allow for UN aid agencies, the Red Cross and Red Crescent and humanitarian NGOs to alleviate the suffering of civilians in warfare. After decades of Western leadership in strengthening the humanitarian system and in establishing mediation capacities and enforcement procedures of human rights by reinforcing international institutions (like the UN High Commission for Human Rights, the special UN rapporteurs, the International Criminal Court etc), the same Western nations suddenly seem to accept a world in which armament and war are again the means of first choice to deal with conflicts. Today´s wars in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine are marked by the ferocity of killing, blatant disregard for international humanitarian law and the deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid. And while humanitarian needs are multiplying, funding is being cut, not only by the US but also by EU member states. Today the humanitarian system is under-funded, overstretched and constantly under assault. Humanitarian workers face indiscriminate hostilities, deadly attacks and incessant obstruction of their work. This event is the first one under the focus on “Humanity in der Zeitenwende”. We will discuss the implications of the permanent violations of IHL and the reduction of finance on humanitarian action and affected populations in current conflicts. What are the implications of EU double standards in the interpretation of IHL on future political developments, in particular in the context of rearmament policies in Europe? How to give humanity a stronger voice in this period of the “Zeitenwende”?Knut Dörmann, former Head of the Delegation to the EU, NATO and the Kingdom of Belgium and former Chief Legal Officer and head of the ICRC's Legal Division,Claude Maon, Director of the International Legal Department at Médecins Sans Frontières, BrusselsGünther Barnet, Department for Regional Cooperation with Africa and the Middle East, Austrian Ministry of DefenceShoura Zehetner-Hashemi,Lawyer, Executive Director Amnesty International AustriaModerator:Irene Horejs, Former Director of DG ECHO and former EU Ambassador to Peru, Mali and Niger

Irene Horejs in conversation with João CravinhoAFTER THE VIOLENT DIVORCE: WHAT APPROACH TO EU-SAHEL RELATIONS?The relations of the EU with Central Sahelian States took a dramatic turn in recent years. After a decade of conflict against insurgencies and jihadist groups and amidst an ever deepening security, economic and humanitarian crisis, the armies of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger seized power by a series of coup d'états in 2021, 2022 and 2023 prompting harsh reactions by the West and the organization of West African States ECOWAS. The Sahelian military juntas reacted by ousting French troupes – until then their main supporters in the fight against Jihadists – forced the withdrawal of the UN peace keeping mission MINUSMA and the EU civil military missions and engaged with Russia for military support. They also withdrew from ECOWAS and created a new regional body “the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES)”. France in turn suspended all its cooperation, other EU Member states did likewise and the EU stopped budget support operations which had made up as much as 80% of the national budget in the case of Niger. Many predicted the collapse of the new regimes after the withdrawal of Western military and financial support. Yet, despite a worsening security and economic situation and increasingly authoritarian rule, the military juntas and their narrative of sovereignty seem to continue enjoying popular trust, especially among the urban youth.Given the multiple strategic interests in the region, EU Member States largely agree on the need to remain engaged with the 3 countries in Central Sahel and tighten relations with the other states in the wider Sahel. The discussion turns about how to approach relations, how to materialize this engagement and how to contain expansion of Russian and Turkish influence in this region, which is so close to the EU´s southern neighborhood.João Gomes Cravinho was appointed European Union Special Representative for the Sahel on 1st of December, 2024 and is responsible to support the definition and implementation of such new approach. He was Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs (2022 – 2024), Minister of Defense of Portugal (2018 – 2022) and had previously served as EU Ambassador to India and to Brazil and as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Portuguese government. Friday marks a year since the Russian-led invasion of Ukraine. Today also marks twelve months of intense pressure of various kinds on the European Union as a result of the illegal war. EU Ambassador to New Zealand Nina Obermaier helped lead a short commemoration in the capital. She spoke to Corin Dann.
Former Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, talks about Trump 2024, the failures of the EU and the United States leading up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and his new book ‘The Envoy: Mastering the Art of Diplomacy with Trump and the World.' Ambassador Sondland comments, he “hopes [Trump] doesn't” run in 2024, saying there “are excellent candidates that can carry those policies forward.” His reasoning being, that, “January 6, was a red line. I could take the good, the bad, and the ugly from the day he came down the escalator until January 6, there are a lot of incredibly important things that President Trump did. There were also some very destructive things he did. But it's like any relationship, you roll with the punches. I did not think anything that he had done while I served, merited my resignation. In other words, even if I didn't support what he said, or did, I saluted smartly, and was a good sort of company soldier, because again, I didn't think it rose to the point where I was prepared to resign over it.” Sondland comments that, “the January 6 thing was different, because the transfer of power, the peaceful transfer of power, for America is critical. It's absolutely critical. That's what we do. That's our brand, and for the world to see what happened on January 6, and the events leading up to it in the events following it, I think, really damaged us. Maybe not irreparably, but certainly for a long time. The Ambassador, who served in the Trump administration, comments that while Trump was a great President, he should become “an elder statesman, a kingmaker, and let one of the 5,6,7 really great candidates out there, advance, move forward and take a lot of the good things he did, and then employ those as the new policies in 2024. I think the country would be better served.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

President Donald Trump's greatest foreign policy achievement was the Abraham Accords advancing peace in the Middle East, says Gordon Sondland, who served as ambassador to the European Union under Trump. "I think the strategy behind the Abraham Accords was you can't keep doing the same thing and expect a different result," Sondland says. The Abraham Accords is the formal term for agreements to normalize relations between Israel and its Arab neighbors, including the United Arab Emirates and Morocco and later Sudan and Morocco. It is viewed as a historic victory for peace in the Middle East. In his new book “The Envoy: Mastering the Art of Diplomacy with Trump and the World,” Sondland discusses Trump's biggest diplomatic moves and what it was like working with the president behind closed doors.
