Episode #46, December 20, 2023Fern Mallis, A Fashion Legend Imparts Wit And Wisdom On Her Career And LifeOn this exclusive episode, you will hear from the Godmother of Fashion, Fern Mallis, as she describes the trials and tribulations of her early days to her current role as President of her own consulting company.Listening to Mallis reflect on her hard-earned wisdom about the industry is the equivalent to enjoying a ten-course meal. Few, if any, know the depth and the breadth of the industry like Mallis, and her knowledge is genuinely on display during this interview. Often, Mallis is on the other side of the microphone interviewing fashion icons such as Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, and Tommy Hilfiger to name a few. But, as an interviewee on Fashioncast® she is equally professional, patient, witty, and intelligent.Mallis has a keen sense of what's needed and expected in the industry. For example, as Executive Director, Council of Fashion Designers of America (1991-2001), she worked tirelessly to launch what is now known as New York Fashion Week. Her efforts to make the show successful and financially viable broke many of the known rules for fashion event planning including soliciting sponsorships, a practice today that is part of the event protocol. You'll hear; however, Mallis is quick to credit all those who have been so instrumental in her career. It's been a collective effort in managing and leading the industry to new heights. When interviewing Fern Mallis, it's obvious that she loves the fashion industry. She is in her zone, a comfortable, familiar, and creative zone. In fact, Mallis is so enthusiastic about her role, she can't help but attract others to her mission to support and build a better fashion industry. That beautiful attitude has served her outside of the industry as well as she has co-founded, directed, and volunteered for multiple nonprofits applying her fashion experience and business expertise to help raise millions of dollars. A legacy that nearly rivals her life in fashion.Interviewing Fern Mallis was an honor, and we sincerely believe you'll enjoy the notable advice and insight from the fashion legend.www.fernmallis.comwww.92ny.orgwww.cfda.comwww.nyfw.com

Holly is hot off the runway at New York Fashion Week's Fall 2023 shows and filled to the brim with fresh fashion knowledge just for you! Your Favorite Personal Stylist attended several fashion shows to get the scoop on what designers are showing so you can get the very first, exclusive info straight from the runways! Holly's NYFW adventures were something ‘extra' this year, thanks to the kindness of Fern Mallis, who is the queen of Fashion Week (she's the one who actually started it back in the 1980s.) This is her 30th anniversary of going to the shows and she was kind enough to let Holly pal around with her for one of the days! #winning!! FIRST STOP: The Supima Cotton Design Competition. Globally recognized and acclaimed American fashion designer, Jeremy Scott, hosted the 16th annual Supima Design Competition, where eight finalists from the nation's leading design schools showcased exceptional individual creativity and design talent with eveningwear capsule collections created entirely with SUPIMA cotton fabrics and competed for a $10,000 prize. SUPIMA, the non-profit luxury brand that promotes the use of American grown Pima cotton around the world, named Carla Pierini of Drexel University as the winner of the 2023 SUPIMA Design Competition. HOT TIP: Please be sure to check out Holly's Pinterest Board for this episode! NEXT: Thursday night, Holly went to the “Fashion Icons” series at the 92nd Street Y where Fern Mallis conducts her annual interviews with influential designers, models and people in the fashion industry. She was in a conversation with the imaginative Gabriela Hearst, where she detailed her route to a career in fashion and how sustainability practices are a way of life for her. FUN FACT: For those of you who watched the inauguration of President Biden, she designed the look for Dr. Jill Biden, that was made from all deadstock fabric (materials existing from available fabrics to minimize the impact on the environment) and was embroidered with all the flowers from all 50 states. STOP NUMBER 3: Designer Jonathan Cohen's Fashion Presentation: A presentation is a more intimate version of a fashion show. It's like a small party. You can meet the designer, touch the fabrics, talk to the design team and more. Born of parents from Mexico and San Diego, Jonathan is known for his artistic Mexican prints, patterns and colors. The laid-back ease of the San Diego surf culture and the modern city approach have manifested into what the brand has become. #GORGEOUS! Also, Holly MAY OR MAY NOT have new boots arriving soon from his new shoe collection. (have you looked at the pinterest board yet? now would be the time!) HOLLY HITCHES A RIDE TO PROENZA SCHOULER! #winnniinnnggg As you should know, Proenza Schouler is one of Holly's go-to and favorite brands. The lines are sleek and modern, and very unique. The clothes are very simple this season with lots of flowy fabrics and neutral colors. You don't see anything else like it. And it's absolutely wearable. They also have a slightly lower price line called Proenza White Label. If you're interested in trying it, this is a great option to see if you like the fit and the aesthetic of the brand without spending a ton. THE SALLY LAPOINTE SHOW: Holly has mentioned this brand before, but she has not seen Sally LaPointe show since she first started going to fashion week, about six years ago. HOWEVER! This show, according to Your Favorite Personal Stylist, was the best one of the week. It literally took place on a sidewalk, taking over Crosby Street in NYC. This season's line has notes of streetwear, with lots of colored feathers, lime green, chain mail and metallics. The feather-lined and sequined ensembles are a staple in many party-loving downtown New Yorkers' closets. And then there were the thigh-high silver boots, and that was THE END for Holly. #TrueLove (Sally doesn't know it yet, but the Holly Train is about to roll up in there to start her Sally LaPointe journey. JUSSAYIN') LaPointe's clothing might appear slightly eccentric to the average person—she had crowds of pedestrians gathered around the outdoor show, causing a traffic jam. THEN, THE PatBO SHOW: The PatBO brand is another NYFW favorite. The designer, Patricia, is Brazilian. Her clothes are crocheted and beaded and very tropical. She makes beaded pants and flowy evening gowns that are like cruise and resort worthy. She also creates gorgeous swimsuit cover ups with unbelievable cuts, and the richest colors. DELL SCOTT COLLECTION Dell Scott is a magnificent designer from Philadelphia. This was a first-time show for Holly, and it was worth it. This designer has beautiful evening wear collection of dresses, both short and long, with beading and ruffles. She had few dresses that Holly absolutely loved. One was a hot pink, very low cut with a vertical dress, with up and down ruffles. She styled it with a really wide black belt because the ruffles were vertical. It literally looked like a hot pink cotton ball. The other was a very, very bold purple bright purple two piece top and skirt with a banded waist and the top was one shoulder crop top with a flower on the shoulder. #TODIEFOR There was more, but you need to listen the full episode to get the true flavor of the week – as ONLY Holly can give. LISTEN HERE NOW! Be sure to head over to Holly's Pinterest Board created just for you for all the brands and designers mentioned in this episode! IN OTHER NEWS! By the mid 90's, New York City had married the European couturier model with the commercial power of Seventh Avenue, and had begun to overshadow Paris and Milan as the most important fashion capital in the world. Voices featured, in order of appearance: Sandra Bernhard, Claire Danes, Julia Stiles, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi, Thirstin Howl III, Kristin Davis, Calvin Klein, Meg Ryan, Ryan McGinley, Kim Gordon, Yukie Ohta, Anna Sui, Laird Borelli-Persson, Vera Wang, Michael Kors, Francisco Costa, Fern Mallis, and Mark Holgate. Fern Mallis was at the 1991 Michael Kors show in a New York loft space when the vibrations from the bass music caused the ceiling to crumble onto all the one named models – think Naomi, Christy, Cindy – and the Fashion Editors sitting in the front row. The next day, the headlines read, “We Live for Fashion, we Don't Want to Die for It.” This set Fern on a mission: not only to create a safe venue for designers to come together and show their work, but to put the American designer on the world map. Thus, the New York Fashion Week Bryant Park tents were born, and Mallis firmly cemented her place in American fashion history. For almost two decades, he tents became a “Fashion City”, with Fern as its Mayor. Now, the iconic creator of NYFW has made a name for herself beyond the catwalk with her legendary conversation series, Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis at the 92 nd Street Y, New York City's hub for culture, politics, the arts, and now Fashion. Her talks give an intimate look into the lives of some of the biggest names in fashion—think Tom Ford, Valentino and Victoria Beckham, to name a few. And now, 34 of them are chronicled in a book series: Fashion Icons 1 and 2: Fashion Lives with Fern Mallis, published by Rizzoli and sponsored by Nordstrom. No topic is off-limits to Fern Mallis, the award-winning creator of New York Fashion Week, when she hosts Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis at New York's 92nd Street Y, a series of riveting intimate conversations with the industry's most talented, successful, and legendary personalities. Fern Mallis started as an editorial assistant at Mademoiselle, worked in her own pr firm and ultimately was the Senior Vice President at IMG Fashion and Executive Director of the CFDA. She is the recipient of numerous industry awards including the 2013 Fashion Industry Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pratt Institute and the 2013 FIT President's Lifetime Achievement Award. Elliot Carlyle, a native Floridian, was musically gifted all of his life. With his eyes set on a successful musical career, Elliot suddenly lost his passion for performing and took some time to uncover a new direction for his life. Full of curiosity, Elliot took the leap and flew out to New York to attend fashion week. With a resilient determination to learn about the fashion industry, Elliot asked the questions necessary to untangle the web of what it took to make it. Carlyle eventually landed a position working at fashion week, transitioned into public relations, and would later accept a position to assist the founder of New York Fashion Week, Fern Mallis. After overcoming severe sickness and homelessness, Elliot prayed and persisted. He is now a successful consultant for the Council of Fashion Designers of America, an author, an empowerment speaker, a life coach, and a diversity and inclusion advocate. Around the same time, a downtown school of designers and cultural figures began to react against the corporatized, uptown school, establishing a second, and equally as powerful vein of American fashion that exists even today. Voices featured, in order of appearance: Sandra Bernhard, Claire Danes, Julia Stiles, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi, Thirstin Howl III, Kristin Davis, Calvin Klein, Meg Ryan, Ryan McGinley, Kim Gordon, Yukie Ohta, Anna Sui, Laird Borelli-Persson, Vera Wang, Michael Kors, Francisco Costa, Fern Mallis, and Mark Holgate. ELEANOR BENNETT: Eleanor is an independent podcast producer and radio journalist. She was captivated by the medium while working the 6AM shift at her college radio station. From there, she moved to New York, where she covered issues of climate justice and women’s empowerment for SiriusXM Radio. She recently finished a project, interviewing hundreds of eclectic and colorful New Yorkers for an interactive audio-visual installation at the Brooklyn Museum by the photographer and street artist, JR. The exhibition, The Chronicles of New York City, is a giant mural of over one thousand New Yorkers that is accompanied by Eleanor’s audio recordings of each person’s story. Making these kinds of personal connections with a diversity of people and creating empathic spaces for them to tell their stories fuels her work. Eleanor is delighted to be back home in the Rocky Mountains producing Gen Z Tea, a new podcast – by teens for teens – from Aspen Public Radio. Each episode, local teens talk with Instagram influencers, social justice activists, mental health app creators, and even politicians on the campaign trail to get the “hottest tea” on how their generation is using social media to change the world. Her latest endeavor is Questions I’ve Never Asked, a mother-daughter podcast about the taboo conversations we rarely have with our parents, grandparents and elders. The story begins with her mother’s unorthodox childhood growing up on a vast cattle station alongside the Pitjantjatjara Aboriginal community in the remote Australian outback. As a young woman, Eleanor is determined to develop a new canon of work from the perspective of women from all walks of life. JANIE JOSELAND BENNET: With no exaggeration, Janie has lived a unique life. The daughter of an Australian film star and a rugged, pioneering cattleman, she was raised in Australia’s remote outback as the sister to three older brothers. Growing up, her primary playmates were the children of the Pitjantjatjara tribe, who lived on the vast-land with her family and whose ancient language she spoke fluently. She was destined for an unorthodox journey! Janie won an Australian equestrian championship (beating a field of men decades older), trained international polo ponies, and eventually traded in her little egg-yellow car to buy a round-the-world airline ticket. As a just-arrived 20 year-old in New York City, she landed a job with Fashion Week icon Fern Mallis. Later, in Aspen, she worked with acclaimed National Geographic photographers and launched Photographers Aspen, their international photo agency. Along the way, she was a contributing force behind the Oscar-winning film, Born Into Brothels, among other global photo projects. She has lived and raised her daughter here in Aspen alongside her husband, former Aspen mayor John Bennett. (And if you know Janie really, really well, she might give you a nip of her homemade gin or even someday take you mushrooming in the wild. ....But don't count on it!)

The electricity went out during one of the runway shows. At another, the fashion editors got stuck in a broken elevator. But the last straw was when ceiling plaster came crumbling down on both the models on the catwalk and the press in the front row at one of the New York Market Week shows in 1991. That mini disaster was what spurred Fern Mallis to create a cohesive, modern iteration of New York Fashion Week that would let the industry (safely) put its best foot forward. In this episode, host Matt Rubel sits down with Mallis, who served as Executive Director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1991 to 2001, to talk about how she organized and modernized NYFW, how it changed the industry and where American fashion is headed next. Much has been said about Bill Cunningham since he died last week. The legendary New York Times photographer's contribution to the fashion world is legendary, and I have nothing new to add to that conversation. What was remarkable to me was Bill the man. I became a huge fan after seeing his documentary Bill Cunningham New York - a film he didn't like because it brought him a fame he never wanted. But this was a man who loved his life's work so passionately, with a childlike wonder and an uncommonly rare purity of integrity and virtue. It's inspiring to me beyond description. I just felt like talking about it and sharing my thoughts, particularly after just recently seeing his wonderful conversation with Fern Mallis at the 92nd Street Y in September of 2014. To use one of Bill's favorite words, it's marvelous. (Visit my website for the link.) The second half of this episode is a reading of my essay about the crisis in the luxury business against the backdrop of our time's unprecedented economic inequality. I hope you can relate. Thank you for listening! George
This week, we mixed things up a bit. We turned to a new expression of creativity: fashion. And to do it, we turned to Fern Mallis, who is considered many to be the Godmother of fashion. In 1993, the year Pete was born, Mallis created Fashion Week in New York City, under the auspices of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), where she served as Executive Director for ten years. Mallis went on to serve as the SVP of IMG fashion and created new fashion weeks in Miami, Berlin, LA, Moscow, and Mumbai, among other cities. Currently, Mallis is the President of Fern Mallis LLC., a company formed to “advise, consult and create,” working with international and domestic fashion, lifestyle and design companies on branding, image, and creative business strategies. Joining us on the phone from her office in New York City, Fern tells us about her experiences in the industry, how social media is changing the way fans and consumers interact with major brands, and why fashion is our most basic, daily expression of creativity.
