My friend and fellow podcaster, Mary Hess of The Back 40, invited me and 3 other gals (from the back 40!) to chat on her podcast. Here's what Mary had to say about all of us crazy and fun ladies: Ever found yourself in a predicament because your body is going through changes you don't quite understand? Or perhaps you're struggling to find your identity amidst the pressures of social media, comparison, and the expectation to constantly achieve? Well, ladies, you're not alone. I'm accompanied by four incredibly inspiring women - Sue Donaldson, Ruthie Gray, Susan Macias, and Carol Feil - who have each navigated their unique journeys and have come to share their wisdom on these common, yet often overlooked subjects. Our conversation doesn't shy away from the personal, the profound, or the downright hilarious. We candidly tackle the often-ignored topic of menopause and each share our own experiences with hormone replacement and our strategies for coping with life's inevitable transitions. I think you'll find comfort and camaraderie in our tales of overcoming fears, breaking free from societal timelines, and taking action, no matter what stage of life you're in.  But that's not all. We dive deep into the challenges of finding your true identity in a world that demands comparison. We discuss the power of authentic communication, and the importance of being true to yourself. Wherever you are in your faith journey, whether you feel you're just starting out or you've been walking the path for decades, this episode is for you. So, get comfortable, grab a cuppa, and join us for a conversation that will have you nodding in agreement, laughing out loud, and maybe even shedding a tear or two. You won't want to miss it. Connect with Sue Donaldson: https://welcomeheart.com/ Connect with Susan Macias: https://www.susankmacias.com/ Connect with Ruthie Gray: https://authenticonlinemarketing.com/ Connect with Carol Feil: https://carolfeil.com/ Find our host, Mary here at The Back 40 Some gems (we do think we are funny...) I had to make a choice, to say this is my new season, and I'm going to assume that God didn't make me faulty. It's not bad. Hot flashes are never fun. I just want to be so in sync with what the Lord is doing in my life, so that, if I snap at someone, that I can do short accounts—to get our relationship back on track as soon as possible—like with God and my children and my husband. Because we can now walk around with, you know, computers in our back pockets, I think we have to really really guard our hearts and minds to what we allow to settle in and take up that space. I think sometimes it's easy for me even to get into the mindset of oh my gosh, I'm in my 50s now and what do I have to show for it? What do I have to show that I've been doing ministry or I'm successful in some arena or some way? I don't know that comparison ever really goes away and I kind of thought it would. To be surrounded by people who inspire you is is self-serving sanctification. To go into community on a regular basis and say have someone say, "You're not late, Susan, you're blessed. You're doing what God wants you to do today." When we start feeling lonely or down about what we're doing or anything to do with our second half of life, the worst thing we can do is stay to ourselves.

Episode #46, December 20, 2023Fern Mallis, A Fashion Legend Imparts Wit And Wisdom On Her Career And LifeOn this exclusive episode, you will hear from the Godmother of Fashion, Fern Mallis, as she describes the trials and tribulations of her early days to her current role as President of her own consulting company.Listening to Mallis reflect on her hard-earned wisdom about the industry is the equivalent to enjoying a ten-course meal.  Few, if any, know the depth and the breadth of the industry like Mallis, and her knowledge is genuinely on display during this interview.  Often, Mallis is on the other side of the microphone interviewing fashion icons such as Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta,  Donna Karan, Michael Kors, and Tommy Hilfiger to name a few.  But, as an interviewee on Fashioncast® she is equally professional, patient, witty, and intelligent.Mallis has a keen sense of what's needed and expected in the industry.  For example, as Executive Director, Council of Fashion Designers of America (1991-2001), she worked tirelessly to launch what is now known as New York Fashion Week. Her efforts to make the show successful and financially viable broke many of the known rules for fashion event planning including soliciting sponsorships, a practice today that is part of the event protocol.  You'll hear; however, Mallis is quick to credit all those who have been so instrumental in her career.  It's been a collective effort in managing and leading the industry to new heights.   When interviewing Fern Mallis, it's obvious that she loves the fashion industry.  She is in her zone, a comfortable, familiar, and creative zone. In fact, Mallis is so enthusiastic about her role, she can't help but attract others to her mission to support and build a better fashion industry.  That beautiful attitude has served her outside of the industry as well as she has co-founded, directed, and volunteered for multiple nonprofits applying her fashion experience and business expertise to help raise millions of dollars.  A legacy that nearly rivals her life in fashion.Interviewing Fern Mallis was an honor, and we sincerely believe you'll enjoy the notable advice and insight from the fashion legend.www.fernmallis.comwww.92ny.orgwww.cfda.comwww.nyfw.com

This week Tara is very busy with theater stuff, so we're going to play for you one of our "emergency" episodes, which we are calling: The Wit and Wisdom of Mavis Freestone. We asked listeners on social media to provide feedback and suggestions for quotes/scenes about Mavis to discuss her "Wit and Wisdom," and got a lot of feedback, so Thank You all! We go through scenes from many books, like Naked in Death, Judgment in Death, Survivor in Death, and others, where Mavis gives advice to Eve or others. For example, helping Eve see Magdalena's intentions clearly, helping Peabody's brother see through Clarissa or comforting Nixie. We discuss how Mavis helps push Eve out of her comfort zone at times with things like pregnancy or relationships, but knows Eve well enough not to push too far. Overall, we have a deep appreciation for Mavis's self-worth and how she owns her successes. We also love her for being way smarter than people expect. Some might be surprised by her insights, but we never are. We just love Mavis as a character in this series, and we can't wait for more Mavis in future books.

In schools today, Shakespeare is often taught superficially. Students attempt to grasp the plot with the aid of their teacher, who helps them through the difficult Elizabethan English. At best they learn something about the beautification of language and the cultural significance of the Bard. But his work is not taught as it was written to be understood, that is, sapientially, for growth in practical wisdom and the ability to see more clearly the nature of man and the man's relationship with both fellow man and God. This week on HeightsCast, we welcome back Dr. Matthew Mehan for a discussion of Shakespeare and the education of leaders. Associate Dean and Assistant Professor at Hillsdale's Van Andel Graduate School of Government, Dr. Mehan helps us see that there is more to Shakespeare than is immediately apparent from a surface-level reading of his plays. He explains how a deep reading of the Bard offers a training in that nimbleness of mind—a good mother wit—without which, St. Thomas More said, all learning is half lame.  To do this, Dr. Mehan walks us through the opening of Hamlet, Act V. Not only does he offer an example of Shakespeare's genius, he also gives an example of how to teach Shakespeare as not only aesthetically delightful but also morally instructive and useful—the ideal companion to theology and philosophy.  For educators interested in learning more about Shakespeare and how to teach him as a teacher of wisdom, check out the Forum's summer workshop on Shakespeare.
