We've waited two and a half years for its 35th anniversary, but finally Joel Martin rejoins Liz and Ben to resolve the Discworld's first (and most literal) cliffhanger in The Light Fantastic, the second Discworld novel, first published on the 2nd of June, 1986. When we last saw them, failed wizard Rincewind, Twoflower the tourist and Twoflower's magical Luggage - a living chest on legs - had fallen over the Rim of the Discworld. But instead of tumbling forever through space, they mysteriously find themselves in the Forest of Skund, surrounded by talking trees, gnomes and gingerbread cottages. The senior wizards of Unseen University - including Chancellor Galder Weatherwax, and the second of his Order, Ymper Trymon - soon discover what's happened: the Octavo, the Creator's book of spells, wants to keep Rincewind alive. One of its spells is inside his head, and all eight need to be read to avert an impending apocalypse heralded by an ominous red star... While the usual story is that Pratchett only returned to the Discworld because The Colour of Magic proved popular, he did set himself up for a sequel by dropping his protagonists off the edge of the world. Unlike its predecessor, The Light Fantastic has a pretty straightforward plot about averting the end of the world - but that doesn't stop Pratchett from parodying everything from fairytales to druidic sacrifices and the conventions of fantasy writing. Plus this book introduces some concepts, and especially characters, who will come back later, including a certain no-longer-human Librarian, Death's adopted daughter Ysabell, and octogenarian barbarian Genghiz Cohen. (The rest of the supporting cast are less fortunate...) Does this feel like a "real" Discworld book yet? How do we reconcile these versions of Death and Ysabell with the ones we come to love later? Is it really a bad idea to start with the early books - or is it fun to begin with the early versions of ideas Pratchett would later develop more fully? And what on the Disc happens to Rincewind between this book and Sourcery? Use the hashtag #Pratchat44 on social media to join the conversation! Guest Joel Martin is a podcaster and writer who has joined us twice before: way back in #Pratchat14 to discuss The Colour of Magic, and then again in #Pratchat31 for The Long Earth. While his podcasts are currently on hiatus, there's soon to be exciting news regarding his speculative fiction writers festival, Speculate! You can watch for Speculate news on Twitter at @SpecFicVic, and join the festival's mailing list via specfic.com.au. Find Joel online at thepenofjoel.com or on Twitter at @thepenofjoel. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Next episode we go back to another second book of a series, as we take a little break from the Discworld. Yes, it's book two of Pratchett's five novel collaboration with Stephen Baxter, The Long War! Send us your questions using the hashtag #Pratchat45, or get them in via email: chat@pratchatpodcast.com

Joel, like Noel, is Laneway Custom Builds, a red seal framer from North Bay came to Toronto nearly a decade ago and jumped into urban construction. Joel has come across almost every type of “urban” scenario, neighbors, deliveries, inspections, tradespeople, working in very tight lots and spots, did we mention neighbors? Getting started with garage building, with his own being the first due to the neighborhood arsonist being kind enough to set his car on fire. Joel had absolutely nothing to do with the fire. He built his garage, another neighbor wanted a garage, and another and off he went with his construction business. Laneway approval is only a couple of years old in Toronto and the city is starting to make things a lot easier for more and more homeowners to apply and construct more laneway homes. Visit the web site https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/planning-development/planning-studies-initiatives/changing-lanes-the-city-of-torontos-review-of-laneway-suites/ We get into all the utilities attached in building the laneway and how all of it has to come off the main home. Best to review all the options and possibly handle these upgrades and changes before the building permit is even issued. Joel even scopes all of the drains to see what they may be up against and the homeowners might consider upgrading the waste lines at that point. From there the construction begins and it’s conventional building, 2x6 framing, batts, mechanical run throughs. Joel is finding working with forward thinking architects and homeowners is allowing him to take the conventional to new levels and build more efficiently. Joel is currently working with Solares Architecture https://www.solares.ca and what are the odds, there office is at 1113 College Street, the home where Manny used to live as a kid. Joel introduces the listeners to a new way to do a slab on grade, ICF slab on grade by http://www.legalett.ca well worth checking it out. This product was used at the University of Toronto laneway homes and that is how Joel heard about it. Joel has a new title given to him by his trades, #Air Boss, it’s all about air leakage and making sure trades do not make unnecessary holes and correctly seal any and all necessary holes. We discuss design layouts and really thinking outside the drafting box. We also chat about costs and realizing that laneway building is a premium construction budget and clients should understand that when they research. Laneway Homes are a great idea and time to move away from the fact only cars live back there. Thank you so much Joel for finally being on the show and sharing your day to day. Love to have you back talking a lot more about construction. We talked today with Joel Seleskie, Founder and Principle of Seleskie Financial. Joel's team consists of 4 other advisers and 8 support staff, and work primarily with owners of privately held and closely held companies. Joel said he knew from a young age that he wanted to be a financial adviser. His first boss when in High School taught him the concept of earning interest on your money, and from then he went on to higher education in Finance, eventually becoming credentialed in financial advisory and insurance. Joel works with a great number of business owners; many of whom are preparing for exit. We focused our conversation today on the role he plays in the process of exit planning. Joel believes in the power that a strong relationship brings to a long term advisory role. His focus is on being relatable, and understanding the non-financial impacts of exit, aside from the financial ones. The 'life after business' concept is one that is easily overlooked, but one that can derail the possibility of a pleasant retirement. So many owners have their life's work wrapped up in their business, in that it becomes their primary identity. Leaving it all behind is one of the most challenging aspects of transitioning, but Joel knows how to help owners deal with that well in advance. Understanding the storyline of the business and the owner, and determining what their needs and wants are is an integral part of the planning process for Seleskie Financial. During the process, Joel seeks to do what he can to help the owner memorialize their life's work. "Will I have enough?" is a question that keeps many owners up at night and it's one that Joel hears often. The remedy? Plan early and meet with your adviser regularly. Many owners also ask "how can I take care of my employees?". Joel's team works together to co-create a plan for the owner to have the best outcome possible while also being mindful of other stakeholders and their families. It's a holistic approach, to be sure. My guest this week is Dr. Joel Minden, a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of anxiety. We focused on the ideas from his excellent new book, Show Your Anxiety Who's Boss (affiliate link). You might remember Joel from my first discussion with him back in 2018. He has a great way of explaining his CBT approach and why it works, which is probably why that first discussion was one of the most listened to episodes so far. As you’ll hear us discuss, Joel's emphasis is on finding effective long-term strategies that can change our relationship with anxiety in a big way, rather than on trying to find tricks to use in the moment to just get through spells of high anxiety. He stresses the importance of letting our values determine what’s important and how we live our lives, rather than allowing anxiety to have that power. We also discussed the ongoing coronavirus, and the high anxiety that so many of us are dealing with related to the pandemic and the strange place we find ourselves in. Joel’s research-tested approach has a lot to offer at any time, and definitely in the current crisis. He and I also talked about: The possibility of feeling guilty about not being as badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic Making the transition to online psychotherapy The timing of the release of Joel’s new book The three big ideas in Show Your Anxiety Who’s Boss Finding options for how you respond to anxiety The problem with trying to eliminate or control anxiety Biased thinking that can drive anxiety (“anxious fictions”) The STUF acronym for experiences of anxiety: sensations, thoughts, urges, and feelings The drawbacks of focusing on reducing anxiety in the moment, vs. longer term strategies Parallels between therapy and medication for short- vs. long-term anxiety reduction The downsides of trying to distance oneself from anxiety through avoidance The value in taking meaningful action when feeling anxious The powerful role of acceptance in dealing with anxiety Redirecting away from a focus on anxiety and toward actions that matter to us The distinction between unproductive distraction and productive redirection The power in realizing we can still function when anxiety is high How to get started when anxiety is really overwhelming The value in starting small when facing our fears Giving ourselves proper credit for moving through anxiety, no matter how “small” the step Whether we can fundamentally change our automatic anxious reactions Check out Joel's blog on Psychology Today: CBT and Me. Here's the book about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that Joel recommended (affiliate link): Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life, by Dr. Steven Hayes. Joel Minden, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, director of the Chico Center for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, diplomate of The Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, and adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology at California State University, Chico. Joel Hubert is what the creation of podcast is all about. He is a ultra marathon runner, traveler, and experimental thinker. While in the jungle of Uruguay, he found a retreat where he participated in a sacred ceremony of psychedelic 'communion' known as ayahuasca. He and Joe connect immediately over their issues yet retained respect for the Catholic church, suffering to create an open mind, their experiences with DMT/ayahuasca, what those medicines are, and more importantly what they could do for our culture. But before that, Joe ties a story of his daughter and Disney's Moana to the podcast's narrative that makes him remember a part of his childhood.
