We begin with a little insight into Scott’s history, how he became an artist, and the importance of painting your passion. Before we delve into the realms of politics, life experiences, philosophy and how these create the stories we manifest into art. Scott and I then move on to discuss social media’s role in the art world, and its effects on confirmation bias and false facts, before finally tackling the themes of fragility and fear. Guest Scott Anthony, Dartmouth '96, was never really thinking about a life in journalism. But he found the time spent working on America’s oldest college newspaper, The Dartmouth, enjoyable because of his ability to pose questions and do research and tell a story. Years later, those skills would come back together in the work he does as an author on business innovation topics.Though he credits growing up in a family that valued tinkering, trying things, and finding new connections as one inspiration, it was a chance encounter in business school with Clayton Christensen, father of disruptive innovation, that set him on path to consulting, researching, and writing on innovation. Scott ended up being a research assistant for Clay, co-writing a book with him, and joining his start-up consulting firm. Nearly twenty years later, working in the firm’s Singapore office, he’s learned—and written—volumes on what it really means to be innovative and what it takes to be innovative in personal and professional realms. In this episode, find out from Scott how innovation in business and innovation in life often feel very similar…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestScott Anthony is an author and senior partner at growth strategy consulting firm Innosight. He has written extensively about a number of innovation topics including disruptive innovation and business transformation, with such titles as his first work with Clay Christensen Seeing What’s Next and his recent 2020 release, Eat Sleep Innovate. Our guest for this episode is none other than Scott Snider, who with his father, Chris Snider are the owners of the Exit Planning Institute in Cleveland, OH. EPI has a credentialed certification process for advisers to become CEPA's; there are over 2000 in the United States and around the world. Exit Planning became 'a thing' as Scott would say in the early 2000's and has taught and fostered professional collaboration among advisers from various disciplines ever since. As a faculty member for EPI, I can tell you that the curriculum is extremely relevant and actionable for anyone who advises privately held companies. Scott's focal points for 2021 are on Business Goals, Personal Goals and Financial Goals. He says these wrapped together support the owner and their business like three legs of a stool. He emphasizes that Exit Strategy is simply good Business Strategy, and it's never too early to prepare yourself and your business for a future exit. "Working with Certified Exit Planners like Julie Keyes is highly recommended," he said. When it comes to preparing a company for sale, Scott says there are two separate distinctions and both must be considered and assessed. They are, "Business Attractiveness" and "Business Readiness" and they're definitely not the same thing! My guest this week is psychologist Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, author of the brand new book, Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization (affiliate link). We spent a good bit of time thinking together about how the ideas from his terrific book apply to the ongoing coronavirus crisis and the social distancing that’s affecting our lives in so many ways. (One effect is that our family members are home all the time, so you may hear some kid sounds during the episode.) Scott and I also talked about the intimate relationship between the sacred and the commonplace, and how self-actualization is not the least bit selfish. We touched on posttraumatic growth, the value in embracing our reality as fully as possible, and why therapists like me struggle with challenges just like everyone else does. I really like talking with Scott and am so glad to have gotten to know him in recent months. Other topics we discussed included: The definition of self-actualization Relevance of my guest’s book to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis The relationship between self-actualization and self-transcendence Self-actualization and transcendence as essential human needs Why we often fear growth Overlap between Scott’s hierarchy of needs and the chakra system The place of love in the hierarchy of needs Whether or not there is a “true self” Scott has his own excellent podcast, with guests who span the field of psychology: The Psychology Podcast. You can find conversations with fascinating guests like Max Lugavere, Dr. Carol Dweck, Dr. Jordan Peterson, and Dr. Angela Duckworth, along with the episode where Scott interviews me. Scott Barry Kaufman, PhD, is a humanistic psychologist exploring the depths of human potential. He is interested in using his research to help all kinds of minds live a creative, fulfilling, and self-actualized life. Scott likes to share his enthusiasm of psychology through his teaching, writing, speaking, and podcast. He writes the column Beautiful Minds for Scientific American and hosts The Psychology Podcast, which has received over 10 million downloads. Scott's writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Psychology Today, and Harvard Business Review. In addition to Transcend, his books include Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind (with Carolyn Gregoire), Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined, and, as editor, Twice Exceptional: Supporting and Educating Bright and Creative Students with Learning Difficulties and The Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence. Scott Harkins is one of those people you just expect to have all the really cool gadgets you could imagine and the capability to make them all work together. This comes in handy in his role as VP & GM of Resideo Connected Home where he oversees the future of Resideo products and their interoperability within the home. Resideo spun out of Honeywell and recently went public (NYSE: REZI). In this conversation replay, Blake and Scott discuss: What Real Estate Developers can do to ensure new buildings are ready for the future. Monetizing IoT devices and services beyond the initial consumer transaction. The role of the connected car in the connected home. One thing that sets Resideo apart from its competitors, like Nest or Ring, is its ability to not only compete on the wall but also in the wall. This is a huge advantage when setting out to connect an entire home through the Internet of Things. It's one thing to control your HVAC remotely, it's another thing when your HVAC communicates with your automatic blinds to work together to conserve energy. This is where Resideo lives and in the middle of it all is Scott Harkins. Find Scott on Twitter, @scharks5 and LinkedIn. Also, check out what Resideo is up to on their website, resideo.com.
