I was pleased as all get-out one day this summer when Dr. Erika C. Martin messaged me on a thread I'd started a few weeks prior. She mentioned she'd be coming through town the following day and -- were I available to schedule something last-minute -- she'd be happy to slightly alter her travel plans to come sit and chat with me for a few.She is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Emporia State University. She's a biostatistician and a science correspondent for the Fish Nerds podcast, and she's the Editor of Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science. She's also a daughter, a sibling, a wife, a mom, a collector of stringed instruments and vinyl records, one heck of a singer/songwriter/guitarist, and she's my guest for Episode No. 148.Erika and I talked family, growing up, academia and education, science, podcasting, and a bunch more, which included a few of her favorite albums. Those were these:This Is the Moody Blues (1974), The Moody BluesRed Hot Chili Peppers' One Hot Minute (1995)'V' is for Vagina (2007), PusciferN.A.S.A.'s The Spirt of Apollo (2009)Good Company (2014), The Dead SouthI'm always impressed and thankful when someone makes the trek in from Lawrence or Manhattan or anywhere, really. The gift of time is invaluable, and when folks travel to donate it via sitting in my basement home studio with me for a chunk of time, I'm grateful. When someone cuts a four-hour road trip in half, though, and hangs out with me for two hours in the interim, well...that's just aces. And Doc Martin is for sure an ace, herself. So, many thanks to her for the trust, the time, and the conversation, and thank you to you for supporting the podcast.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are clips from a tune called, "Donny Gone," by The Jazzual Suspects. I found it on their self-titled release from 2018, c/o Om Records.

The challenges of Fall fishing   Tonight's show run down   Fishing Reports  15m   Hatcher Bros Erin (@femboyfishing) and Michael (@srien_string_and_stream) are catching smallies and trout and the occasional walleye in the Ozarks   Steve NcAngler says trout season is over in The White Mountains but one can still dredge up some nice browns in the catch and release section of the Androscoggin.  He's catching bass these days on Sneaky Pete's (topwater bullet head popper with a flared skirt and trailing sili strands) and for subsurface he likes Dragon Tails (a tail material called sili worm behind a built up head, originally cut down “Squirmy” toys)   The Driftless-some streams closed for the Fall spawn but plenty of creeks are open to catch and release and the tourists have gone home.  Fishing is solitary and they're smashing the terrestrials, some drys and streamers. https://news.orvis.com/fly-fishing/seasons-of-the-driftless-area   Joe Henry Fishing at Lake of the Woods is on fire!!! 6m FITN 10min John Gierach passed from a heart attack October 3rd 2024   Apache Trout Success:   https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/secretary-haaland-announces-removal-apache-trout-arizonas-state-fish-endangered   Maine Bans Painted Heads: https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/life/animals/wildlife/new-law-expands-maines-lead-fishing-tackle-ban-protect-loons/97-61c87bb3-687c-4610-839a-2ce5eb8fb7fa Laura Williams Maine Audubon Society 30 min   Show pt. 2 Halloween     Scary Fish: 15-20 min   Zombie Salmon-Yes they are catchable, some fight some do not, the scariest thing i have ever felt sorry for short of Frankenstien.  I find the grip and grin photos with them disquieting.   Peter Herman Adventures- https://youtu.be/C5AjppfOntc?si=5NzzCCLnY6v4j5vm     Candiru-sent in by our own Jeff Danaldson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candiru_(fish)   This is the one that legend says swims up one's urine stream right into the urethra.  It has never been confirmed.  In 1997 one was removed from a man's urethra but the circumstances were “suspect” which is a story just made for Fish Nerds.   Stonefish-this one scared the heck out of me when I was a little kid.  The most venomous fish of all. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synanceia   https://www.surfertoday.com/environment/how-to-treat-a-stonefish-sting     other entries: The Kraken Angler Fish Goblin Shark   My FAVORITE from Steve NcAngler is “the fish you hooked but never saw.”  It could have been anything! Listener spooky stories and other fisher freak outs:  15-20min   62% of respondents have had a weird or spooky incident on the water. 25% said it started scary but turned out to be something ordinary CH and the turtle   Chris Snodgrass My Wife and I were trolling for Kokanee Salmon. It was just before dark and we had the only boat on the water. It's a small reservoir in Montana. The water was like glass it was so calm. As we got out to the middle the water swirled next to the boat like a whale turned next to us. The swirl was as big or bigger than our boat. It was extremely creepy so we headed to the dock! Still not sure what the swirl was caused by but maybe an under water spring... It was in 50' of water though.   Alan Dumitrescu I'm the only person at this lake. You know the sound of a rod wishing through the air on a hard cast? Yeah that sounds happened in the wooded area behind me just once like a cast. Only similar sounds I've ever heard is bigger birds wings. I looked no birds anywhere no turkeys roosting in trees for the night. The sun was setting at this point. I didn't see anything but it was real close. My only other thought cause a bunch of neighboring property dogs were all fired up a few minutes earlier and they had settled down just before I heard it. Never heard bobcat hiss in person but at that point since they are in that area is all I could think and why the dogs were fired up. So I hurried the hell out of there. I'm not tangling with big kitty if that's what it was.   John J Murphy Well I grew up in Salem Ma and used to fish a cemetery pond so I'd go with yes   Phantom Casters From Rick Webster I was fishing the first beach at Sandy Hook in Jersey one late September. When I got to the parking lot and not another car in sight. I set up, soaking clams on two rods before sun-up. As the pre-dawn light began to show over the horizon, a THICK bank of fog rolled in. Slack tide and zero wind…very peaceful but not expecting anything spectacular. Suddenly, about 500 seagulls that had been resting on the roof of the bath house lifted into the air and began to dive nosily into the surf. The fog was so thick I couldn't see them, but I could hear them, not 20 yards off the beach. Figuring a blitz of snappers, I sent a 3-ounce Yo-Zuri popper into the fog and immediately came tight on what turned out to be a 12lb Albie. As I was fighting this fish, the fog began to lift and I could see I was surrounded by 25 to 30 other surfcasters. I had no clue how they suddenly appeared as this stretch of beach is wide open, so I would have seen them before the fog came in. No one spoke and the only sounds were screaming gulls and drags as we all enjoyed a rare mix of blues and albies for the next 30 minutes in a classic fall blitz. As the action died down, the fog rolled in again and I appeared to be all alone again. Since I was tired and a little spooked by the mornings events, I packed up my gear and headed back to the parking lot. Just like when I arrived, mine was the only car there. I have no idea where the other fishermen came from or how they disappeared and to this day, I'm not entirely convinced they were actually there. https://onthewater.com/spooky-fishing-stories   Aliens prefer fishers:   Pascagoula UFO Abduction  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascagoula_Abduction   See Entry 12:  https://skepticalinquirer.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2019/03/SI-MJ-12.pdf   Charles Hickson 42 Calvin Parker 19  Went fishing on the Pascagoula River Mississippi October 11th 1973     On the evening of October 11, 1973, 42-year old Charles Hickson and 19-year-old Calvin Parker went fishing on the west bank of the Pascagoula River.  As dusk fell, they heard a whirring/whizzing sound and saw flashes of blue light on the water.  They looked up to see an oval-shaped object approximately 30-40 feet across and 8-10 feet high.  Three creatures came gliding out of the craft and took them aboard.  Completely paralyzed but still conscious, the two men were subjected to a medical exam by a giant robotic eye.  They were then returned to shore, and the craft sped away into the night sky.    Both changed their stories over time.  Parker said he passed out but later claimed to remember certain details.  Hickson kept altering his story. The original polygraph on Hickson was given by an untrained operator as part of a commercial deal and there is speculation that it never really took place.   Drinking was believed to be part of the incident. In this episode, the Crappie Hippie John King from the Fish Nerds Podcast delights us once again with another great conversation, this time with the wonderful Cassie Hall, a co-angler from Alabama, about her fishing experiences as a co-angler with the Lady Bass Anglers Association. They delve into the world of co-angling, women's representation in fishing, and the vibrant fishing community of the LBAA that transcends boundaries. Cassie highlights her challenges, such as finding enough space to store all her fishing gear. With multiple bags and numerous fishing rods, she has become the subject of good-natured jokes from fellow anglers. Cassie humorously describes her truck, when filled with fishing supplies, resembling a well-stocked store. However, she admits that keeping the fishing rods organized and tangle-free is critical. Cassie actively plays a leadership role in the LBAA, leading meetings with newcomers to the organization to discuss various topics, such as safety, sportsmanship, and personal health. She stresses the significance of being transparent about swimming ability to ensure everyone's well-being during fishing outings. Additionally, she shares her enthusiasm for introducing new members to tournament fishing with some who have never participated before. Cassie acknowledges her inexperience in tournament fishing but highlights the tremendous growth and sense of accomplishment one can achieve through this journey. The conversation takes an inspiring turn as John shares the story of a young fishing prodigy named Rosie, who was previously featured on the Fish Nerds podcast. At just eight years old, Rosie represents a new generation of fishing enthusiasts and finds solace in an inclusive world that props her dreams and aspirations. Cassie reminisced about her childhood when women in fishing were underrepresented in media and magazines. However, she celebrates progress, with women now constituting 30% of the fishing community. This increased representation motivates young girls like Rosie to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Thanks to Fish Nerds for this engaging collaboration featuring valuable insights into co-angling, women's representation in fishing, and the sense of community that binds anglers together. She offers valuable insights into how female anglers can attract sponsors and generate interest in themselves through effective promotion. Overall, this episode of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast provides an engaging and informative conversation about the world of fishing, particularly for women, and is an excellent resource for anyone looking to build a successful career in the industry from one of the legends. There are times when we are either planning your podcast, launching it, or you're just trying to get a larger audience. I see people in groups, websites, and meetups where they are stuck in the decision-making process. Today we are going to walk through the basic steps, and look at where and why people get stuck.   Because of My Podcast: Clay Groves is Now the Host of the Morning Radio Show and a Program Director Clay is the man behind the Fish Nerds podcast and because of his podcast he was first selected to be the man behind the scenes who does the editing, some voice-over at a station. That lead to him filling in on the weekends which lead to him NOW being the Morning Radio Show host AND Program Director. HOW COOL?  Check out Clay at www.fishnerds.com  The Basics of Making a Decision In doing some research and reading a bunch of articles you can boil decision-making down to about 5-10 steps. These are: Step 1: Identify your goal Step 2: Gather information for weighing your options Step 3: Consider the Consequences Step 4. Make the Decision Step 5. Evaluation the decision Full episodes notes at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/775 Mistakes People Make When Making A Decisions Zero Research There are some shows that have done zero research and end up naming their show the same as MANY other shows (search for outside the box in your favorite app).  Lack of Qualified Advice Not having an expert or someone who has done what you're doing. My ex-wife was a nurse and when I was given the decision of "How do you want your Dad to die, slow or fast?" She asked for a surgical consult. I didn't even know what a surgical consult was, but we did one and it added about five more years to my Dad's life.  Paralysis By Analysis There is a Ted Talk by Sheena Lyengar who is a blind psycho economist who specializing in decision making They had 348 different kinds of jam. We set up a little tasting booth right near the entrance of the store. We there put out six different flavors of jam or 24 different flavors of jam, and we looked at two things: First, in which case were people more likely to stop, sample some jam? More people stopped when there were 24, about 60 percent, than when there were six, about 40 percent. The next thing we looked at is in which case were people more likely to buy a jar of jam. Now we see the opposite effect. Of the people who stopped when there were 24, only three percent of them actually bought a jar of jam. Of the people who stopped when there were six, well now we saw that 30 percent of them actually bought a jar of jam. So when you do some research and bounce it off someone who you feel provides trustworthy advice, you're ready to move to on to looking at the consequences. Fear of Consequences You think there is an A U D I E N C E listening when you first start (there isn't). Then a few months later you have fear because people ARE listening. Remember no one will punch you in the face. You can change things later. It's the first episode of the years and in the same that I have the last episode of the year look at why people listen, today we talk about how to start. Ten Years ago I did an episode called "27 steps to launch a podcast and today I am going to update it. As you might imagine things have changed in 10 years. If you already have a podcast I have some items for you. Over the years there have been some ingredients of podcasting that we know add value, but like any recipe, if you use an ingredient in the wrong way you can ruin the final product. Keep it Real I hear the phrase, "Keep it real." This should stay authentic. You should be talking from your heart and your beliefs. Don't say what people want to hear because it's popular, if your opinion differs let's hear it. Let's also hear why you believe those thoughts. We just might learn something. How this phrase is abused is when "keeping it real" means I'm not going to edit my podcast at all. There are editors who work in movies, television, books, magazines, and newspapers. However, your podcast is perfect with no room for improvement. There is always room for improvement. I read on Facebook where someone took 26 minutes to answer ONE question. The final version of the podcast had that answer trimmed to four minutes. Fishing is Boring I haven't fished in 20 years. If you're into fishing check out the Fish Nerds show with Clay Groves. For me, half the fun was getting to play with a boat and get out on a lake. In some cases, if the boat had a motor it was even more fun. Then you bait your hook, throw your line in and wait. Then you wait some more. This part of fishing is really boring. Every time I hear someone start off an interview with "Tell me a little bit about yourself," the person is fishing. They are listening just like watching their bobber float on the lake, looking for a nibble. Reeling in a Fish is Exciting I don't watch fishing on TV, but if I'm clicking through the channels and a fishing show is on, they don't show two people in a boat watching their bobber. They show someone standing up with excitement as they have caught a great fish and they are bringing it into the boat. When you have a guest and you find something that YOU KNOW is going to RESONATE with your audience that's exciting and in the same the fisherman does everything they can to get the fish into the boat, you do everything you can to get that content into your recording. Stories are Great Half the time we ask, "tell me a little bit about yourself" we are fishing for a story. Somehow we are lead to believe that knowing someone's back story is going to help us. If I started my podcast with "Today we are going to interview Gern Blanston who has a proven strategy of growing your audience by 200%, but first, let's find out what his parents did for a living..." you would be yelling at your device to get to the good stuff. Stories are great when someone shares a story that we can learn from, or it makes you laugh, cry, think, groan, or educates us or entertains us. When I was sixteen years one night I was trying to look cool in front of a girl and climbed a sign at the front of the mall that showed the names of the movies in its three theaters. We figured out that we could change the title "Desperately Seeking Susan" to Desperately Sucking Suzan. As I was a hard rock fan, I was not a fan of Madonna and thought this would be hilarious. It took some effort to get up there, and once up there changing letters was not as easy as it looked. In the end, the sign read Desperately Seeting Susan. Is this real? Yes. Is it a story? Yes. Does it help you with your podcast? No. Just because something is real and it's a story, doesn't mean it's good. It might be really boring. The story of Glenn the Geek from the Horse Radio Network asking to get a booth at the largest Horsing Event was a great story as it has helped many people grow their podcast. Fishing Takes Patience - And We Live in a Microwave Society People want good stuff. They want the band whose name is on the ticket (skip the warm-up act). GET TO THE GOOD STUFF. Tell a four-year-old kid you brought them candy and then tell them they first have to listen to you recite some Edgar Allen Poe. They will start screaming, "GIVE ME THE CANDY." Netflix just added the ability to speed up movies. If you are watching a series on Netflix, at the end when you click "Go to next episode" it skips the end credits of the current episode and in intro of the next episode. It gets right to the good stuff. Conversations Are Great This is another thing I hear that is taken out of context. What you want to avoid is an interrogation if you are interviewing someone. Just because something is done in a conversational style does not mean it's not boring. All You Need is Consistency People are taking the word consistency and spinning it as "If I just release a show on a consistent basis, I will have success." I see people in Facebook groups saying things like, "I've been podcasting for seven months on a weekly basis, why aren't my numbers higher?" They feel consistency in publishing is the key. It is important. When you publish on a regular, predictable basis, you become part of their routine. HOWEVER: What really matters is consistency in delivering value. I remember Jason Sudekis from Saturday Night Live. Troy Heinritz from the blacklist exposed told me the show LEd Lasso on HBO was really good (notice word of mouth) and so I check it out and Troy was right. I then saw Jason had a movie called Kodachrome on Netflix. The movie was predictable, but again the acting of Jason Sudekis was impressive. Consequently, I would watch another Jason Sudekis movies because he was in it. The same goes for the actor Paul Giamatti who I originally saw in Howard Stern's private parts. He is an amazing actor. I love John Cusak movies from the '80s. I loved behind John Malcovich cause it was so outside the box. Something happened and John's movies started being more and more "Meh" and while I'm still a fan, it's not automatic that I will watch a movie because John is in it. When it comes to with consistency it boils down to this, I would rather have a GREAT episode one day late, instead of a "Meh" episode on time. Podcast Review Show – Get Your Podcast Reviewed

The Fish Nerds podcast has a tagline, “Best fishing podcast that is always interesting, usually funny & mostly true.” This week Clay comes on to has us put the Fish Nerds Show under the microscope. Here is What We Liked Great branding. Everything seems well coordinated between the website and the podcast. You instantly know that you take fishing seriously, but not so much yourself (and this show is going to be fun). Hugo's cooking segments were “Super Real” and we loved the quality from a field reporter. The “Take one for the team” mention of mercury in the fish was humorous. Clay does a great job of sending people to his Facebook Group to keep the conversation going. Loved that his guest was someone he didn't agree with and brought him on to have a dialogue. You got to the content quickly. Some Thing That Need Polishing A couple of dead links on the website If Hugo could paint a picture a bit more with his words Clay refers to “We” when it's really only him. He has to be careful to not make sponsors sound like “the bad guys.” You might want to change the word “Blog” to podcast (or make two categories and have both) You might consider getting some swag made at https://schoolofpodcasting.com/teespring (Tee Spring) as you have great quotes from your show that could make great swag There were a couple of Facebook pings during the recording. At times the volume was a little unbalanced (check out www.auphonic.com) Don't forget about the new people (or people outside the US) to explain the details. Check out the Fish Nerds Website is www.fishnerds.com Check out them out on https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/fish-nerds/id643687501?mt=2&ls=1 (iTunes )and http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/fish-nerds (Sticher)
