It was just before dark and we had the only boat on the water. It's a small reservoir in Montana. The water was like glass it was so calm. As we got out to the middle the water swirled next to the boat like a whale turned next to us. The swirl was as big or bigger than our boat. It was extremely creepy so we headed to the dock! Still not sure what the swirl was caused by but maybe an under water spring... It was in 50' of water though.   Alan Dumitrescu I'm the only person at this lake. You know the sound of a rod wishing through the air on a hard cast? Yeah that sounds happened in the wooded area behind me just once like a cast. Only similar sounds I've ever heard is bigger birds wings. I looked no birds anywhere no turkeys roosting in trees for the night. The sun was setting at this point. I didn't see anything but it was real close. My only other thought cause a bunch of neighboring property dogs were all fired up a few minutes earlier and they had settled down just before I heard it. Never heard bobcat hiss in person but at that point since they are in that area is all I could think and why the dogs were fired up. So I hurried the hell out of there. I'm not tangling with big kitty if that's what it was.   John J Murphy Well I grew up in Salem Ma and used to fish a cemetery pond so I'd go with yes   Phantom Casters From Rick Webster I was fishing the first beach at Sandy Hook in Jersey one late September. When I got to the parking lot and not another car in sight. I set up, soaking clams on two rods before sun-up. As the pre-dawn light began to show over the horizon, a THICK bank of fog rolled in. Slack tide and zero wind…very peaceful but not expecting anything spectacular. Suddenly, about 500 seagulls that had been resting on the roof of the bath house lifted into the air and began to dive nosily into the surf. The fog was so thick I couldn't see them, but I could hear them, not 20 yards off the beach. Figuring a blitz of snappers, I sent a 3-ounce Yo-Zuri popper into the fog and immediately came tight on what turned out to be a 12lb Albie. As I was fighting this fish, the fog began to lift and I could see I was surrounded by 25 to 30 other surfcasters. I had no clue how they suddenly appeared as this stretch of beach is wide open, so I would have seen them before the fog came in. No one spoke and the only sounds were screaming gulls and drags as we all enjoyed a rare mix of blues and albies for the next 30 minutes in a classic fall blitz. As the action died down, the fog rolled in again and I appeared to be all alone again. Since I was tired and a little spooked by the mornings events, I packed up my gear and headed back to the parking lot. Just like when I arrived, mine was the only car there. I have no idea where the other fishermen came from or how they disappeared and to this day, I'm not entirely convinced they were actually there. https://onthewater.com/spooky-fishing-stories   Aliens prefer fishers:   Pascagoula UFO Abduction  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascagoula_Abduction   See Entry 12:  https://skepticalinquirer.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2019/03/SI-MJ-12.pdf   Charles Hickson 42 Calvin Parker 19  Went fishing on the Pascagoula River Mississippi October 11th 1973     On the evening of October 11, 1973, 42-year old Charles Hickson and 19-year-old Calvin Parker went fishing on the west bank of the Pascagoula River.  As dusk fell, they heard a whirring/whizzing sound and saw flashes of blue light on the water.  They looked up to see an oval-shaped object approximately 30-40 feet across and 8-10 feet high.  Three creatures came gliding out of the craft and took them aboard.  Completely paralyzed but still conscious, the two men were subjected to a medical exam by a giant robotic eye.  They were then returned to shore, and the craft sped away into the night sky.    Both changed their stories over time.  Parker said he passed out but later claimed to remember certain details.  Hickson kept altering his story. “The ordinary traveler, who never goes off the beaten route and who on this beaten route is carried by others, without himself doing anything or risking anything, does not need to show much more initiative and intelligence than an express package." Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! In this episode, we're discussing The River of Doubt by Candace Millard, a story that follows the expedition of Theodore Roosevelt as he explores the Amazon river in Brazil. Though faced with many hardships along the way, Roosevelt finds purpose in this monumental journey after losing the 1912 election. We cover a wide range of topics including: The explorer spirit and the drive to explore the unknown Theories of how long humans have been in the Americas How the crew was able to form relationships with uncontacted tribes The progression of travel methods in comparison to the early 1900s What were in the cards for Roosevelt and Rondon after they returned And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. After losing the 1912 election, Roosevelt traveled to Brazil to explore the Amazon river, which was largely unknown at that time.  (4:17) The explorer spirit and the urge to explore something that people haven't seen before. While there's not much else for us to discover for the first time on earth, there are still many unique things to go see that only few have. (8:52) Roosevelt and the crew seemed to underestimate what they were getting into, and though underprepared, it ended up being an overall success.  (14:21) We talk a bit more about Rondon and his backstory, as well as what life looked like for him after the expedition. He had contact with tribes that were otherwise cut off from the rest of the world.  (18:26) The relationships with the tribes they came across and how the tribe leaders had to mutually agree before a course of action was taken on Roosevelt's crew. At the time, it was not known that the tribe they had contacted were cannabalists.  (22:37) There's a theory that the Amazon is man-made or at least man-influenced. While there's evidence of humans in the Amazon from at least 13,000 years ago, how long have humans really been in the Americas?  (27:50) Seafaring canoes and the possibility of natives reaching new land via canoe tens of thousands of years ago. It's also a mystery how many journeys have failed throughout time, as there is likely no record of their expedition at all. (31:29) The drive to explore is in our DNA. Do we feel that need for evolutionary purposes?  (37:40) We talk about the description of the surgery on Roosevelt's leg during the journey and the backstory behind it. (42:07) Sickness and the prevalence of malaria during the trip. We give some stats on the fatalities of malaria, and the lethality is less than we expected.  (44:19) Roosevelt brought his son, Kermit. Though Kermit didn't want to go, he went so he can watch out for his dad. Back in this time, going on a trip for months or even years meant you wouldn't have any contact with people back home for that whole span. (48:55) Stories of Roosevelt when he was visited by ambassadors in the White House, and other humorous presidential stories.  (52:32) There have been several amazing stories and documentaries describing the journies of different adventurists and mountain climbers. It goes to show just how important pacing yourself is and knowing how to pack the appropriate supplies.  (1:00:51) Why the crew hardly saw any wild life during their time in the Amazon. Though you're surrounded by them, they're extremely hidden. (1:05:58) Rondon's leadership along the way and how he managed to keep order, despite one of the crew members causing trouble.  (1:14:19) When we think about Roosevelt's journey and compare it to today, we see how far we've come. We can now reach the other side of the world at much quicker speeds and have the potential of seeing more growth in this area during our lifetime, too.  (1:19:53) Stay tuned for our next episode...

It's Friday July 22nd, 2022, and from Victoria one last time, this is a look at the information security news from overnight. From SecurityWeek.com:Drupal has released patches for four vulnerabilities. The most critical flaw affects Drupal 9.3 and 9.4. and it can lead to arbitrary PHP code execution on Apache web servers. The other three vulnerabilities also impact the Drupal core and can lead to cross-site scripting attacks, information disclosure, or access bypass. Get your patch on kids. From PortSwigger.net:Zyxel has released patches for several of its firewall products following the discovery of two security vulnerabilities that left business networks open to exploitation. One is an authenticated directory traversal vulnerability in the Common Gateway Interface, and the other is a local privilege escalation vulnerability that was identified in the command-line interface. You should update to the latest versions as soon as you can. From Infosecurity-Magazine.com:Threat actors are using PayPal to send out phishing invoices. PayPal domains are usually “allow-listed” by organizations' email filters, so cyber-criminals are registering accounts and composing malicious invoices on the platform. Many are spoofing Norton products, but substituting their own information for payments. They even have someone answering the included Customer Service number to continue the charade to extract dollars from their victims. From ThreatPost.com:Four newly discovered attack paths in the products for IAM vendor Okta could lead to PII exposure, account takeover, or even organizational data destruction. Note that the researchers call these “attack paths” and not vulnerabilities. Okta says this is a non issue and all you need to do is tweak up your security profile a little, which is beyond what they offer as their default settings. You can see the details in the article. And last, from BleepingComputer.com:The Israeli spyware vendor Candiru was found using a Google Chrome zero day to spy on journalists and other high-interest individuals in the Middle East with their 'DevilsTongue' spyware. Threat researchers from Avast, who discovered the vulnerability and reported it to Google, revealed that they unearthed the flaw after investigating spyware attacks on their clients. The vuln was patched on July 4. Details and a link to the research in the article. That's all for me today. Have a great rest of your day. Like and subscribe, and until next next time, be safe out there.

In this episode, the HackNotice Team discusses the latest cybersecurity news. 1. "A new wave of attacks starting late last week has hacked close to 300 WordPress sites to display fake encryption notices, trying to trick the site owners into paying 0.1 bitcoin for restoration. These ransom demands come with a countdown timer to induce a sense of urgency and possibly panic a web admin into paying the ransom." 2. "Trading platform Robinhood said Monday that personal information for more than 7 million customers was accessed during a data breach on November 3rd. The company said in a news release that it does not appear that Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, or debit card numbers were exposed, and no customers have had “financial loss” due to the incident." 3. "The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Saturday confirmed unidentified threat actors have breached one of its email servers to blast hoax messages about a fake "sophisticated chain attack." 4. "A secretive Israeli company helped hack a British news site and used it to take over the devices of some people who visited the site, cyber researchers say. The cybersecurity firm ESET said in a report Tuesday that the company, Candiru, helped an unknown foreign government hack the London news site Middle East Eye with a so-called watering hole attack, which places malicious software on a website to infect and hack the computers of people who visit it." 5. "Roughly three months after Eskenazi Health released a statement announcing a cyber security breach that compromised personal data, some patients are just now receiving that news in the mail. According to this release posted last month, Eskenazi Health was notified of a cyber attack “on or about August 4, 2021” that resulted in the personal information of some employees and patients being leaked to cybercriminals. However, the same release claims the breach actually happened three months prior “on or about May 19, 2021.”

The Cyberlaw Podcast
Fighting Ransomware By Pushing All the Buttons on the Dashboard

The Cyberlaw Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2021 84:41

The Biden administration's effort to counter ransomware may not be especially creative, but it is comprehensive. The administration is pushing all the standard buttons on the interagency dashboard, including the usual high-level task force and a $10 million reward program (but not including hackback authority for victims, despite headlines suggesting otherwise). And all the noise seems to be having some effect, as the RE ransomware gang's web sites have mysteriously shut down. Our interview is with Josh Steinman, who served as the National Security Council's Cybersecurity Senior Director for the entire Trump administration. He offers his perspective on the issues and the personalities that drove cybersecurity policy in those chaotic years. As a bonus, Josh and I dig into his public effort to find a suitable startup, an effort we have to cut short as I start getting too close to one of the more promising possibilities. Nick Weaver reminds us (in song, no less) that the government's efforts to stop scourges like Trickbot have a distinct whiff of Whack-a-Mole, and the same may be true of REvil. Maury Shenk covers the Biden administration's belated but well-coordinated international response to China's irresponsible Microsoft Exchange hack, including the surprising revelation that China may be back to hacking like it's 1999—relying on criminal hackers to serve the government's ends. In other China news, Maury Shenk and Pete Jeydel catalog the many ways that the current regime is demonstrating its determination to bring China's tech sector to heel. It's punishing Didi in particular for doing a U.S. IPO despite go-slow signals from Beijing. It's imposing cybersecurity reviews on other companies that IPO outside China.  And it seems to be pressing for competition concessions that the big tech companies would have successfully resisted a few years ago. It was a big week for state-sponsored attacks on secure communications. Nick and I dig in the FBI and Australian federal police coup in selling ANOM phones to criminal gangs. Previewing an article for Lawfare, I argue that the Australian police may have to answer tough questions about whether their legal authority for the phone's architecture really avoided introducing a systemic weakness into the phone's security. Law enforcement agencies around the world could face even tougher questions if they've been relying on NSO or Candiru, Israeli firms that compromise mobile phones for governments. Both firms have been on the receiving end of harsh forensics analyses from Amnesty International and Citizen Lab. Nick thinks the highly specific and centralized target logs are particularly a problem for NSO's claims that it doesn't actually know the details of how its malware is deployed. Pete Jeydel tells us that the administration is learning to walk and chew gum on cybersecurity at the same time. While coordinating pushes on Chinese and Russian hacks, it also managed to get big chunks of the government to turn in their federal cybersecurity homework on time. Pete talks us through one of those assignments, the NTIA's paper setting minimum elements for a Software Bill of Materials. It wouldn't be the Cyberlaw Podcast without a brief rant on content moderation. The Surgeon General claimed this week that “Misinformation takes away our freedom to make informed decisions about our health.” He didn't say that administration censorship would give us our freedom back, but that seems to be the administration's confident view, as the President, no less, accuses Facebook of “killing people” by not jumping more quickly to toe the CDC's official line. And if you thought it would stop with social media, think again.  The White House is complaining that telecom carriers also should be screening text messages that are hostile to vaccinations. Finally, just to show that the world has truly turned upside down, Maury reminds me that a German—German!—court has fined American social media for too enthusiastically censoring a lockdown protest video. Pete tells us what's in the new Colorado privacy bill. Short version: it joins Virginia's in some of hosing down California's excesses. And in short takes: Maury explains Vietnam's version of China's fifty-cent army. Nick explains why Psiphon is a better tool for evading Cuban censorship that the sleaze-infested Tor system. Maury updates me on the European Parliament LIBE committee's latest proposal for accepting the U.S. intelligence community's transatlantic surrender on data flows. And Pete tells us that the Securities and Exchange Commission may finally be putting the screws to companies that have been lax about reporting breaches to their investors. And more! (Or old Puzzling Evidence with Dr. Philo Drummond.) The new includes the return of the REAL P.R. Gnus by LeMur and a Psycho Skeletons tune, as well as background music by DJ 2Beans.
