Rob's introduction to fly fishing literature started with a copy of Sex, Death, And Fly Fishing while on vacation in The Galápagos Islands during the summer of 1993. The writings of John Gierach inspired Rob to pursue a lifetime of trout fishing, fly tying, travelling to Colorado, writing, and telling stories. Rob wanted to be a trout bum before he could drive a car. Rob talks about his fondness for Gierach's work and his inspiration which led Rob to talk into a microphone instead of tap stories onto a keyboard. John's life of trout fishing ended in October 2024. His voice will be missed by the entire fishing community. Thankfully his words will last forever on paper. Be sure to read his collected works, short stories, periodical contributions from the past four decades. I will always think of him when I hear the bagpipes.  Learn more about your ad choices. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/675 Presented By: Togens Fly Shop, FishHound Expeditions Today, we're honoring one of the greatest voices in fly fishing, John Gierach, who passed away in October.  I first recorded this episode with John in 2018, right after starting the podcast. John was already a huge inspiration to many with his stories and deep love for mountain streams and fly fishing. In this episode, we'll hear about John's early life and how he started writing, why he loves fly fishing, especially the mountain streams of Colorado, and some of his biggest mentors who influenced him over the years. Some we've had on this podcast since this episode. I was so excited when we first had John on, and he said yes to doing an episode because it was early on in this podcast, and he was one of the biggest, maybe the biggest, I knew out there. There are so many great stories in this one. John also came back for a second episode, and it was a dream that I never told anybody about to have John on for a podcast series so we could dig into all or many of his books. We never quite got there, of course, but we do have his voice today that should inspire all of us in his words of writing and books for years to come. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/675

As we got out to the middle the water swirled next to the boat like a whale turned next to us. The swirl was as big or bigger than our boat. It was extremely creepy so we headed to the dock! Still not sure what the swirl was caused by but maybe an under water spring... It was in 50' of water though.   Alan Dumitrescu I'm the only person at this lake. You know the sound of a rod wishing through the air on a hard cast? Yeah that sounds happened in the wooded area behind me just once like a cast. Only similar sounds I've ever heard is bigger birds wings. I looked no birds anywhere no turkeys roosting in trees for the night. The sun was setting at this point. I didn't see anything but it was real close. My only other thought cause a bunch of neighboring property dogs were all fired up a few minutes earlier and they had settled down just before I heard it. Never heard bobcat hiss in person but at that point since they are in that area is all I could think and why the dogs were fired up. So I hurried the hell out of there. I'm not tangling with big kitty if that's what it was.   John J Murphy Well I grew up in Salem Ma and used to fish a cemetery pond so I'd go with yes   Phantom Casters From Rick Webster I was fishing the first beach at Sandy Hook in Jersey one late September. When I got to the parking lot and not another car in sight. I set up, soaking clams on two rods before sun-up. As the pre-dawn light began to show over the horizon, a THICK bank of fog rolled in. Slack tide and zero wind…very peaceful but not expecting anything spectacular. Suddenly, about 500 seagulls that had been resting on the roof of the bath house lifted into the air and began to dive nosily into the surf. The fog was so thick I couldn't see them, but I could hear them, not 20 yards off the beach. Figuring a blitz of snappers, I sent a 3-ounce Yo-Zuri popper into the fog and immediately came tight on what turned out to be a 12lb Albie. As I was fighting this fish, the fog began to lift and I could see I was surrounded by 25 to 30 other surfcasters. I had no clue how they suddenly appeared as this stretch of beach is wide open, so I would have seen them before the fog came in. No one spoke and the only sounds were screaming gulls and drags as we all enjoyed a rare mix of blues and albies for the next 30 minutes in a classic fall blitz. As the action died down, the fog rolled in again and I appeared to be all alone again. Since I was tired and a little spooked by the mornings events, I packed up my gear and headed back to the parking lot. Just like when I arrived, mine was the only car there. I have no idea where the other fishermen came from or how they disappeared and to this day, I'm not entirely convinced they were actually there. https://onthewater.com/spooky-fishing-stories   Aliens prefer fishers:   Pascagoula UFO Abduction  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascagoula_Abduction   See Entry 12:  https://skepticalinquirer.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2019/03/SI-MJ-12.pdf   Charles Hickson 42 Calvin Parker 19  Went fishing on the Pascagoula River Mississippi October 11th 1973     On the evening of October 11, 1973, 42-year old Charles Hickson and 19-year-old Calvin Parker went fishing on the west bank of the Pascagoula River.  As dusk fell, they heard a whirring/whizzing sound and saw flashes of blue light on the water.  They looked up to see an oval-shaped object approximately 30-40 feet across and 8-10 feet high.  Three creatures came gliding out of the craft and took them aboard.  Completely paralyzed but still conscious, the two men were subjected to a medical exam by a giant robotic eye.  They were then returned to shore, and the craft sped away into the night sky.    Both changed their stories over time.  Parker said he passed out but later claimed to remember certain details.  Hickson kept altering his story. With the passing of a great author, something much more significant is lost than a new title every few years. First and foremost a man is gone. Beyond that, the fly fishing world has lost a voice. Today I reflect a bit on Gierach's impact on the fly fishing world. From adding popular phrases to spurring on countless imitators, he moved generations of anglers in many ways. At the heart of it all is the fact that he was a consistent voice for anglers across five decades. Consistency, especially today, matters. Learn more about your ad choices. Tom is on a fishing trip this week. While on this trip he learned his friend and legendary fly-fishing author, John Gierach had passed away at 78. In his honor Tom asked me to post his last intervew with John from May of last year and to share this with all of you: "John Gierach was one of the finest voices in fly fishing. He passed away suddenly last week. Always humble and kind, his writing never reached into navel gazing but he just told great, honest, and funny stories and like all great writers he never wasted a word. I once had the pleasure of spending a week sharing a cabin with him in Labrador and he was exactly the man in person that he was in his writing. We will all miss him greatly." Here is the show descrption from May 19, 2023 Our climate is changing, and regardless of whether you think it's human caused or natural it is changing. If you don't believe that you need to get outside more. John Gierach [58:00], thoughtful guy that he is, wanted to tal.k about this subject and how he deals with changes that have happened in his lifetime, and what we can all do to deal with climate change and still enjoy fly fishing, because as he says "we still gotta live" and to some of us fly fishing is life. I n the Fly Box this week we have lots of questions, many of them quite basic but still fun to answer because you can always give them a new twist. What is the best rig to catch trout with worms? (I hope he meant worm flies and not real worms) What can I do to keep my Depth Charge line from tangling? I am moving to Texas and want one rod for inland bass and one for inshore saltwater. Is there one outfit that can do this? Am I better off buying one high-end rod or several lower priced rods if I fish in a variety of trout situations? Can you overline bamboo and fiberglass fly rods? I have a dog that likes to chase rocks and sticks. Any tips on how to train a dog to be a good fishing companion?  Is there any way to tell a trout rise from a chub rise? I am confused by fly line numbers and hook numbers. Can you explain them? What do fish deep in a lake take my Pat's Rubber Legs fished quickly? What do the fish think it is?  How do you fish your Rabbit's Foot Emerger patterns? What do I do with my rod when tying on a new fly or landing a fish? Is there a better knot than a clinch knot for tying on size 18 to 22 flies? My welded loop has cuts in it. What can I do to fix that? What kind of dry/dropper arrangement do you use when there is nothing visibly hatching? A good tip from a listener on walking the banks of your favorite rivers in low water to get a sense for the bottom structure. Can you tell the difference between a male and female trout by looking at the anal fin?

It was very saddening to hear the news that John Gierach, the world famous and beloved fly fishing writer, has passed away at the age of 78.He was a huge inspiration to us here on Ireland on the Fly for his books, personality, style and approach to fly fishing as well as life.  There was much we could all learn from him.And so, in honour of the late, great John Gierach, we remember him with a repost of an interview we did with John in April 2023 when his last book, All the Time in the World, was released.John explained why he saw himself as a writer first and angler second, discussed the hard work and process behind his writing success, which began with Trout Bum in 1986, and he also delved into why he headed west to Colorado to begin a life lived based solely around fly fishing. All the Time in the World was a poignant title, with John explaining how he came to choose it when remembering a fly fishing friend who had passed away.  Little did we think that just 18 months later, John Gierach too would pass on to the eternal river.“Later in life,” he wrote. “The death of a friend is no longer unbelievable because you've learned about mortality the hard way, but that doesn't make the news land any easier.”John Gierach, 1946-2024, ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

John Gierach publishedTrout Bum in 1986. The book was an immediate hit with fly-fishing enthusiasts as it provided a fresh look at the sport as well as the devotion and passion that keeps trout devotees up all night, tying flies all winter and exploring newfound waters in hard-to-reach locales. Trout Bum is as much about why people fish as as it is about the act of fishing. Following the book's launch, many anglers quit their jobs, moved out West and became trout bums. Gierach joined the Anglers Journal Book Club discussion to answer reader's questions about his famous book and the impact Trout Bum had on the fly-fishing world. He also discusses his overall writing career and his other books. In our interview, we took a deep dive into Hemingway's experiences, his writing process, and the enduring legacy of his works. Whether you're a devoted Hemingway fan or a literary enthusiast, this episode promises to be a captivating exploration. Join us as we unravel the complexities of Hemingway's life and appreciate the timeless power of his writing. The Life and Works of Ernest Hemingway Show Notes with Mark Cirino 2:13 - Mark grew up in a household where his parents were readers. Her mother was a writer and his father was a journalist. This is also where he talks about how he stumbled upon Ernest Hemingway's works. 3:48 - Mark talks about what the war meant to Hemingway. 5:49 - He describes Hemingway's writing style and the iceberg theory. Ernest's style may have come from his journalism background and his subject matter. The men of action that he writes about are involved in crises or dangerous situations. 11:30 - We dig into Hemingway's early life when his love for the outdoors started, particularly fishing. He mentions the places that Ernest wrote about such as Michigan where he wrote Indian Camp and The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife among others. 13:32 - He differentiates the real Ernest from the myth of him. 18:58 - He had Ken Burns and Lynn Novick on the One True Podcast to talk about their PBS documentary on Hemingway. Ken Burns and Lynn Novick also co-wrote the introduction in their book called One True Sentence: Writers & Readers on Hemingway's Art. 20:52 - In Hemingway's memoir called A Moveable Feast, he talks about how to deal with writer's block by starting with one true sentence and going on from there. 22:20 - He talks about fishing in relation to Hemingway's works. 24:05 - I mentioned John Gierach, author of several fly-fishing books, whom we had in the podcast in episodes 047 and 434. 25:36 - In Hemingway's journey as a fisherman, he bought a fishing boat in 1934 which he called Pilar. Mark has an episode in his podcast with Paul Hendrickson where they talked about the latter's book called Hemingway's Boat: Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost. 26:45 - Hemingway's works inspire Mark to keep his curiosity and continuously produce interesting topics for his podcast. 28:27 - We dig into the predator-prey concept in fishing and hunting in Hemingway's book called Islands in the Stream. 33:22 - His current favorite Hemingway work is A Farewell to Arms. He also talks about The Old Man and The Sea which he says is the perfect Hemingway theme of "winner take nothing". 36:36 - We talk about the end of Hemingway's life at the age of 61 in Ketchum, Idaho. His wife Mary said that he accidentally killed himself while cleaning his shotgun. 40:56 - Mark talks about Pauline Pfeiffer, Ernest Hemingway's second wife. He was married four times. He tackles more about her in his episode with Ruth Hawkins. 42:50 - I ask him about Ernest and Spanish bullfighting which he wrote about in his books entitled Death in the Afternoon and The Sun Also Rises. 44:46 - He shares some highlights from The Sun Also Rises. 49:13 - For those who haven't read any of Hemingway's works, he recommends starting with The Old Man and the Sea and one of his short stories called Big Two-Hearted River. 53:16 - He asks which I think is more conducive for soldiers returning home from the war between deep fishing and fly fishing. 54:12 - We dig into Hemingway's evolution of writing. From 1925 to 1929, he wrote four books which made him a literary superstar. His comeback in 1940 was successful because of his book entitled For Whom the Bell Tolls. 56:31 - He describes Hemingway as a pessimist as evident in an excerpt from his book In Death in the Afternoon, in which he says "All stories end in death, and he is no true-story teller who would keep that from you." 58:00 - He talks about that time in 1954 when Hemingway and his wife Mary survived two plane crashes in Africa, and his failed attempts before his suicide in 1961. 1:02:47 - He started the One True Podcast when he noticed that there were no podcasts focused on Ernest Hemingway. The Hemingway Society sponsors the podcast. 1:04:47 - He likes listening to other podcasts such as the Rico Brogna Podcast with Evan Roberts who is a crazy Met fan. OK, I lied. There aren't 15 tips. There are probably more and if you want to count them up you can e-mail me and correct my mistake. But I get a lot of questions about fishing emergers, and I thought a podcast on how to identify when fish are taking emergers and how to fish them would be welcome. Not only that, world-famous and beloved fishing guide and author Pat Dorsey [36:05] gives us his favorite fly patterns for fishing emergers including a couple secret ones. In the Fly Box this week, we have some thoughtful questions and a few tips from listeners, including: A great tip on casting with your non-dominant hand Will wildfire smoke affect trout populations? If I hear there are native brook trout in a stream, how do I find out where they are?  A nice tip on untangling snarls of fly line. Bigger brook trout started taking my nymphs on the swing instead of dead-drifted. How should I take advantage of this next time? How much of an incline in a small mountain stream can trout survive? A listener was disappointed in my podcast with John Gierach because we did not discuss how anglers can have a positive impact on climate change. Two listeners want to know what type of floating line to put on their Euro rods when they switch to dry flies. Why are some articulated streamers tied with the hook down and why are some tied with the hook up? I have a busy life. Am I missing opportunities by not tying my own flies? Brown trout are invasive in my cutthroat stream. Should I take them home to eat them, or just kill them and throw them up on the bank?  Is it ethical to back and fish a place on my own if a guide showed me the spot? I have heard if you cut the welded loop off a fly line you can't use it any more because it will absorb water. Is this true?

Our climate is changing, and regardless of whether you think it's human caused or natural it is changing. If you don't believe that you need to get outside more. John Gierach [58:00], thoughtful guy that he is, wanted to talk about this subject and how he deals with changes that have happened in his lifetime, and what we can all do to deal with climate change and still enjoy fly fishing, because as he says "we still gotta live" and to some of us fly fishing is life.

He talks about the flows of the river mimicking a natural hydrograph due to the endangered status of the white sturgeon. 15:18 - He met with the technical management team along with the Fish, Wildlife & Parks and agreed to stop power peaking to prevent the sturgeon from becoming endangered. 16:15 - The green drakes have come back since the power peaking stopped. Green drakes can be seen around the second or third week of July. 17:46 - Dave shares a brief history of Kootenai and what the area is known for. The name Kootenai originated from French trappers to refer to the deer robes that the Kootenay Indians would tan. 19:34 - Libby is home to a historical museum. There is also the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness which is a grizzly bear habitat. 21:15 - He talks about the seasonal progression of hatches on the river. They have this thing they call a happy hour hatch. 22:58 - He discusses the various ways of fishing on the river, including float fishing, walk-wading, swing, and Euro nymphing. Dry fly fishing is the most popular way to fish at Kootenai River. 26:53 - He talks about fish size at Kootenai River. He mentions the 29-pound rainbow caught at the Kootenai River. 30:24 - The films River Wild and The Revenant were shot in Kootenai falls. 30:43 - He met Steven Spielberg when the film Always was shot in the Kootenai National Forest and around Libby in the 1980s. He had an opportunity to teach Richard Dreyfuss how to cast on the set and also had lunch with Holly Hunter and Dreyfuss. 33:03 - He talks about their 30-inch club and the incidental catches on bull trout. The biggest bull trout they've ever taken was about 41-inch bull trout, probably about 25 pounds. 35:31 - He discusses native fish management. The Redband rainbows currently do not have Endangered Species Act (ESA) protection, unlike the bull trout and white sturgeon. 38:22 - He talks about fishing trips at Kootenai. He says that a 3-day trip would be ideal when visiting Kootenai. Kootenai is the second largest river in the state. 42:35 - He talks about their lodging at Kootenai Angler and that time when they built their first rental cabin in '92 under $15,000. 43:25 - He shares that time when Meryl Streep wanted to stay in their cabin during their filming of The River Wild. 44:15 - Now they have a total of four cabins and an onsite restaurant that is open to the public. 45:20 - He describes what their busy summer looks like in the cabin and the drift trips they do. The floatable section of the Kootenai with the exception of the falls is 50 miles. 49:03 - Kootenai River is less famous than the Madison River or Big Horn. The traffic is unlike in other areas, and Dave thinks that is Kootenai's saving grace. 50:55 - There are a lot of places where people can camp along the river. 52:51 - He talks about the Kootenai Falls. 55:01 - Dave runs a full-service package for those who plan to visit Kootenai. 56:02 - He talks about the possibility of hooking big-sized rainbows. Streamer fishing is the most effective way to catch big rainbows. His head guide, Joe, caught a 32-inch rainbow on a hopper dropper rig. 58:04 - Jeff Currier was up in Kootenai fishing with him a while back. They used the SA stillwater line. Jeff caught a 9-pound rainbow using a Scientific Angler Stillwater camo. We had him in our first Traveled series episode. 58:50 - He applied Jeff's technique when he went to Iceland.   1:00:15 - They provide gear and flies in their guided trips. He's a Winston Pro Staff, so he carries Winston rods in the boat. For those who want to use their own gear, he gives tips on what gear to bring. 1:01:52 - They also offer last-minute guided trips. 1:02:31 - Their peak season is from August to early September. 1:04:38 - He talks about what the Fish, Wildlife & Parks' bull trout regulations. 1:07:47 - I mention our previous episode with Derek Bird of Fly Fusion Magazine. 1:09:06 - Dave mentions the possibility of catching a Westslope cutthroat trout. 1:11:07 - It's time for the two-minute drill. I ask Dave for some online resources where people could dig in more about Kootenai. Dave recommends the Libby Heritage Museum and the Libby Chamber of Commerce. 1:11:31 - He also recommends Sources of the River for those who want to dig deeper into history. 1:11:47 - Dave was a regional director of Montana Trout Unlimited and the Fishing Outfitters Association of Montana. 1:12:29 - He tells us about that time when he took American author John Gierach up on the Elk River in the late ‘80s. He also went fishing again with John two years ago in the Kootenai. 1:13:50 - He talks about the Sheldon Mountain Boys and gives us a fantastic banjo performance to cap off today's podcast. 1:14:20 - I mention our episode with Brandon Molzahn who also plays the banjo. 1:16:40 - He also plays with the band called Boulder Creek. Get a copy of the Down by the River Children's Book by Andrew Weiner: https://timetogowild.com/products/gowild-346-gowild-down-by-the-river--childrens-book One beautiful autumn day, Art sets out with his mother and grandfather for a fishing trip. Fishing days are Art's favorite. He loves learning the ropes from Grandpa—the different kinds of flies and tackle and the trout that frequent their favorite river. Art especially appreciates Grandpa's stories. However, this time, hearing the story about Mom's big catch on her first cast ever makes Art feel insecure about his own fishing skills. But, as Art hooks a beautiful brown trout, he finds reassurance in Grandpa's stories and marvels in the sport and a day spent with family, promising to continue the tradition with his own grandkids generations later. Reviews: This is a beautiful book; fun and informative to read, lovely to look at and simple enough for kids without being simplistic. I'd recommend it to children with an interest in fly-fishing or to parents who'd like to spark that interest. For that matter, I'd also recommend it to some of my more extreme fly-fishing friends for its humble, humane view of a sport that sometimes gets too fast-paced and competitive. — John Gierach, bestselling author of A Fly Rod of Your Own Author Andrew Weiner and artist April Chu have produced a book that could help whet the appetite of youngsters you hope will share your love for fly fishing. Down by the River, released this week by Abrams Books, is a beautiful book documenting a day of fishing by a young boy named Art, his mother and his grandfather. — Trout Unlimited Get a copy of the Down by the River Children's Book by Andrew Weiner: https://timetogowild.com/products/gowild-346-gowild-down-by-the-river--childrens-book #GoWild #Trout #GearboxTalk Learn more about your ad choices. This week my guest is artist Bob White [36:41], a beloved painter of fly-fishing and bird hunting scenes. Bob has illustrated John Gierach's magazine pieces for years and also illustrated the current version of The Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide. Bob talks about making a career in the fly-fishing world, how he balances his painting life with his fishing life, tips for budding wildlife artists, and how his art affects his fly tying. In the Fly Box this week, we have the following questions and tips from listeners: How do I encourage guiding operations to hire more female guides and people of color? I just bought a fly rod and am having trouble casting a 1/16 oz. spoon on it. What am I doing wrong in my casting? Should I go to a heavier lure? Since I will never cast 90 feet with my light fly rod, can I cut off some of the fly line to get more backing on my reel? People say there are no hatches on the streams I fish. So why am I catching trout on nymphs all the time? What part of my line should I stretch? If I am using a Skagit setup, should I stretch my head? And do you stretch cold-water lines any different from warm-water lines? And should I use a leader straightener tool? What resources can I use to figure out what parts of birds and animals I hunt should be saved for fly tying? And where can I learn the fundamentals of fly tying? A tip from a listener on the best gift you can buy yourself--virtual fly-casting lessons. Why do you want the trailing hook so far back on an Intruder fly? A tip on wearing Nitrile gloves over thin merino gloves for fishing The trout seemed to have disappeared from my river this winter. It runs into a lake. Do you think the fish have gone there?

This week we have acclaimed artist, Bob White on the show to discuss art, fly fishing, and his new book "The Classic Sporting Art of Bob White." Bob White is an artist and author whose work expresses a misspent youth. Instead of doing his homework, his nose was constantly in the outdoor books and sporting magazines of the day. Consequently, he has wandered between Alaska and Patagonia for over three decades as an itinerant fishing guide, looking for gainful employment. He now paints and writes for a living; which is to say, he’s still searching.   Bob’s artwork has been influenced by such masters as Homer, Sargent, and Fournier, and by more recent artists, such as Pleissner, Jacques, and Sloane. He works in watercolors, oils, pencil, and ink, and his ability to capture a fleeting moment through the eyes of a sportsman has earned him international recognition. His work hangs in the private and corporate collections of sportsmen on six continents.   Bob has guided in Southwest Alaska as a fishing and wing shooting guide for over three decades. He has also guided sportsmen in Argentina and continues to host fly fishing and wing shooting trips to Patagonia, Alaska, Kamchatka, and other destinations. The photographs that he takes of his guests frequently appear in national publications and are often used as reference material for field and stream portraits.   Bob’s recognitions include being inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Artist in 2009. He was Fly Rod & Reel magazine’s Guide of the Year in 1988. As the 1994 Artist of the Year for the Alaska State Parks Foundation, Bob produced and donated the artwork for the first Alaska State Parks Foundation print. His work has been presented twice in Fly Rod & Reel magazine’s Gallery. Bob has been featured as a guide and artist on ESPN’s “Fly Fishing the World” and “Fly Fishing America”, as well as several appearances on Ron Schara’s “Minnesota Bound”. He currently illustrates the closing column for Ducks Unlimited magazine and illustrates a regular collaborative column with John Gierach in TROUT, the magazine of Trout Unlimited. He regularly contributes artwork and the occasional story to a myriad of national and international sporting publications.   Bob and his wife, Lisa, live in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota with their daughter Tommy, and their wonderful retrievers, Frisbee and Quill.   Bob's Book Get Your Limited Edition Bob White Shirt Picture courtesy of Tosh Brown

Fly Rod of Your Own is John's most recent book. Jim Teeny noted the article on the throwing rocks on fish and I noted the idea of throwing spoons out to get steelhead into range for the fly.  John didn't recall what I was talking about. The editorial piece on marijuana that John wrote for the local paper. The Joe Rogan Podcast where the CEO of Tesla smoked weed on live air. The hares ear parachute and a hares ear soft hackle behind it are his goto flies. Alice Monroe tells a great story and a writer he follows along with Jim Harrison and Peter Mathison. John Gierach in fly fishing, Sparse Grey Hackle, Mary Oliver, Jim Harrison were other writers that influenced Steve. Trout Bum may have been one of the big books that really grabbed Steve.  Just 2 days ago John Gierach just sent Steve an article for the 10th anniversary. The Burning Pram on the Yakima River in October is a great desert party and something I hope to attend this year.  This also includes the all breed dog race for a chance at glory. The best flies when fishing rainbows for Steve is a quigley cripple off of the back of a caddis, the beadhead pheasant tail. Episode 39 of the podcast is all about Tenkara and is one technique that is a little controversial within fly fishing. I noted Fly Fish TV old timer Gene Hering, who is still selling fishing DVD's but in the middle of a media world that is transitioning. Oman GT's is in a new episode of the Journal. John Gierach has long been a fly fishing hero of mine.  What I didn't know, but came through clearly in this Paleo Treats Podcast interview, is that he's also a writing hero. We start the interview by talking about one of his major influencers, his Uncle Leonard.  Leonard was “just good at things in a duct tape and baling wire kind of way.  He didn't always do things right, but he always got things done.” That practical bent of making sure things got done “so that they worked” has certainly rubbed off on John.  His writing (18 books in total and about 800 articles, all on fishing) has the unusual ability to drop you into a story without realizing you're not listening to him tell it around a campfire, or on a long road trip. There's no better example of this (in my mind) than his short story, “Headwaters” from the book Trout Bum.  John talks about how writing in the second person gives the writing immediacy, even though it's an unusual perspective. John wrote that first book, “Trout Bum”, in 1985, coining the term and  realizing that, “I wanted to do what I wanted to do.”  Like many great artists and most of my favorite people, he wasn't willing to let anything get in the way of that, least of all the judgement of others on a lifestyle that to him made complete sense. We talked a little about fishing, what he calls a “pre-existing condition”, but mostly we talked about the factors that shaped him and his drive to make things that worked well. We explore how fishing and writing share characteristics that reinforce each other; the mystery of landing a fish and the unknown of beginning to write a story both hold that desire to explore and somehow master the unknown. John is a master craftsman both as a fisherman and a writer, and we talk about what it takes to gain that status. From his book “Fishing Bamboo”, we discuss this quote. “In fact, the best work is still usually done in the oldest tradition of craftsmanship:  You learn to do the thing the way it is:  as the end product of generations of collective genius. […] Those who strike out on their own without first mastering the craft can end up on some pretty thin ice.” Some of what John said in this interview spoke deeply to me as a writer and lover of excellence at its base: “When you first start writing, there's this sense that you're going to be great right away.”  “…it turns out that the higher the pitch of your emotion the less objective you are and…it tends to hurt you.” “If you can get fascinated with it, which I did, it's almost as much fun as fishing.” “People who are good at anything and who are happy about it,” are people who have learned to do something they once saw as difficult, and it brings them great happiness. Of course, we turn to some of my favorite subjects; loneliness, hardship, and danger.  I was relieved to realize that I'm not the only one who wakes up every day thinking I haven't experienced enough of any of those.  John talked about an essential element of telling the truth about mistakes, and how powerful that is.  I've seen a general push towards this lately in the wider world, this “sharing your vulnerability”, and John does this (and has been doing this) for decades in a superb way. His writing tips regarding when to write and the importance of telling it how it was, not how it could have been, well after the emotions of an experience have faded, were incredibly insightful for me.  “The temptation to try and make yourself look good is tremendous, and you have to back off in the interest of being honest with your readers.” We talk about friendship and imperfections, how it's hard to find someone you can spend time with, a long time with, and that's the value of a great friend. John's been lucky (and good) enough to fly into and fish some exceptionally remote and wild places, including some places where [probably] no one had ever fished.  “That's just awfully exciting, and of course, everybody has a thing for wilderness, most people don't actually get into it, but there's a tension […] if you've flown a float plane into someplace and get in trouble, the response time can be days or weeks instead of hours.” “The other side of that, [my] home water, I've fished every year for 40 years, has something really comforting about the familiarity of it.”  John's perspective on enjoying whatever is in front of him, whether it's the wildly exotic or the well known familiar, is inspiring.  John took up fly fishing “not for the sport but as a possible path to enlightenment”, and his determination to follow that path to enlightenment and to share it with the wider public comes through clearly in this interview.  We finished up with the advice that he wouldn't give to anyone, knowing that we each have to have the experience in order to learn and grow from it, and no amount of useful advice will save us from making mistakes which we need to make. John's latest book is A Fly Rod Of Your Own.   Enjoy the show!

The FN Book Club is back! This month we read John Gierach's newest book "A Fly Rod of Your Own" we loved the book and we got to talk with John! This is a big deal. Thanks to Simon and Schuster for helping us set this up. John Gierach, “the voice of the common angler” (The Wall Street Journal) and member of the Fly Fishing Hall of Fame, brings his sharp sense of humor and keen eye for observation to the fishing life and, for that matter, life in general. John Gierach is known for his witty, trenchant observations about fly-fishing. In A Fly Rod of Your Own (Simon & Schuster; April 4, 2017; $25.00), Gierach once again takes us into his world and scrutinizes the art of fly-fishing. He travels to remote fishing locations where the airport is not much bigger than a garage and a flight might be held up because a passenger is running late. He sings the praises of the skilled pilots who fly to remote fishing lodges in tricky locations and bad weather. He explains why even the most veteran fisherman seems to muff his cast whenever he’s being filmed or photographed. He describes the all-but-impassable roads that fishermen always seem to encounter at the best fishing spots and why fishermen discuss four-wheel drive vehicles almost as passionately and frequently as they discuss fly rods and flies. And while he’s on that subject, he explains why even the most conscientious fisherman always seems to accumulate more rods and flies than he could ever need. Tenkara Cast - a podcast about tenkara fly-fishing

Few writers in the realm of fly-fishing have achieved the iconic status of John Gierach. One of the great honors of my career has been to have piqued Gierach's interest in tenkara, and then to fish with him on a few occasions. Last year he released his latest book, All Fishermen are Liars, I'm still debating whether the inclusion in a book with this title is something of which to be proud...but I guess I am. John and I sat down last year to have a conversation about his experiences with tenkara . We put out the video you can see on the link: http://www.tenkarausa.com/john-gierach-talks-tenkara-all-fishermen-are-liars/. Since that interview several people asked us to release the full interview, and the podcast is a great medium for that. So, here is our unabridged conversation...except for a couple of small cuts for when we got too distracted by his cute cats.
