I was pleased as all get-out one day this summer when Dr. Erika C. Martin messaged me on a thread I'd started a few weeks prior. She mentioned she'd be coming through town the following day and -- were I available to schedule something last-minute -- she'd be happy to slightly alter her travel plans to come sit and chat with me for a few.She is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Emporia State University. She's a biostatistician and a science correspondent for the Fish Nerds podcast, and she's the Editor of Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science. She's also a daughter, a sibling, a wife, a mom, a collector of stringed instruments and vinyl records, one heck of a singer/songwriter/guitarist, and she's my guest for Episode No. 148.Erika and I talked family, growing up, academia and education, science, podcasting, and a bunch more, which included a few of her favorite albums. Those were these:This Is the Moody Blues (1974), The Moody BluesRed Hot Chili Peppers' One Hot Minute (1995)'V' is for Vagina (2007), PusciferN.A.S.A.'s The Spirt of Apollo (2009)Good Company (2014), The Dead SouthI'm always impressed and thankful when someone makes the trek in from Lawrence or Manhattan or anywhere, really. The gift of time is invaluable, and when folks travel to donate it via sitting in my basement home studio with me for a chunk of time, I'm grateful. When someone cuts a four-hour road trip in half, though, and hangs out with me for two hours in the interim, well...that's just aces. And Doc Martin is for sure an ace, herself. So, many thanks to her for the trust, the time, and the conversation, and thank you to you for supporting the podcast.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. You need to inventory your data; you need to manage it. You can't protect what you don't know exists. You can't provide transparency to consumers if you don't know you have it somewhere.” — Travis Wong “Ensure you have a solid foundation. Know where your key data is, know who has access to it, and know what type of data that actually is. Inventorying it is one thing, classifying it is something else.” — Travis Wong
Californication is the seventh studio album released by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Another Rick Rubin classic, this album was among the most popular albums of the 1990s and contains the hit singles Scar Tissue, Otherside, and Californication. This was John Frusciante's first album back with the band following his departure after the release of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The band did a brief stint with Dave Navarro on guitar and released One Hot Minute in 1995. Released in 1999, Californication marked a return to and evolution of the sound that the band discovered with Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
We're breaking from tradition again. Sometimes we just want to take an episode to shed some light on an overlooked record or maybe one that the artist would just as soon you overlook. Such is the case with "One Hot Minute" from the RHCP. What do you do when you lose a superstar guitarist of a generation? Well, sometimes if you're lucky, you just scoop up another one. They didn't have to look that far even though they did. (Shout out Arik Marshall). Just so happened that a young but established guitar god was fresh out of a gig and lookin to mingle. I mean, come on. Dave Navarro got that Sammy Hagar deal. If all you remember from that era is "aeroplane", you might need a revisit and you have come to the right place. We've got drugs, rock n roll, and sex. Well, not so much sex. This might go down as the Chili's least horny record to date. They made up for it with lavish displays of homoeroticism and boundary pushing videos. In this episode, we thank Dave for his service and hopefully reacquaint everyone with a semi-lost classic.

Ciao!

Steve's already let his feelings on this week's Broken Record be known but can Remfry make him see reason? Short answer ... no. But then, both our hosts have a soft spot of sorts (one more so than the other) for One Hot Minute, the sixth full-length studio album by Red Hot Chili Peppers. An album which Steve believes ‘justifies their entire ridiculous existence as a band' and Remfry calls 'the most frustrating RHCP album in a back catalogue full of frustrating albums', One Hot Minute is the follow-up to the world conquering Blood Sugar Sex Magik, an album that firmly established Red Hot Chili Peppers as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Disaster followed soon after however as John Frusciante became disenchanted with fame and quit, Anthony Kiedis relapsed after 5 years clean, and Flea (gulp) ... sang! To replace Frusciante, the Chilis looked to former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, a wonderful guitarist who errr ... doesn't really like funk. Bit of an issue for the biggest funk rock band in the world, but they persevered all the same, creating the most eccentric album the band would ever release in the process. Largely ignored by a large swathe of the band's fans (and the band themselves to be fair) One Hot Minute has nevertheless garnered devotional cult adoration by a small minority and has become the most celebrated Red Hot Chili Peppers album among those who can not f**king stand the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
To quote Stan Bush from Transformers: The Movie - 'Dare to keep all your Dreams alive'. The Nay-sayers said they wouldn't dare to do another three episodes on One Hot Minute. As climate-change denialism starts to fade into history, activists are picking new battlegrounds, including the courts. Jenny Cooper QC, president of Lawyers for Climate Action, explains why it's time for the suits to get their hands dirty – and why her organisation is also calling for a profound change to New Zealand's legal system. More than just one hot minute, few rock groups of the '80s broke down as many musical barriers & were as original as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Creating an intoxicating new musical style with funk & punk rock, combined with a stage presence that no one forgets & the infamous sock covering parts of mother nature, they spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century. Led by Kennedy, we dive into the wild side.
Since Covid-19 struck, Auckland physicist Shaun Hendy has been constantly in the news for his work modelling the virus's spread. But before then, he was best known for his very public refusal to get on a plane – or rather, his refusal to get on any planes at all for an entire year. He comes on the show to discuss the personal costs of climate activism, and to explain why he's calling for the restoration of the daily train service between Auckland and Wellington. Fossil fuel executives are the bad guys of the climate change story, right? Companies like Exxon are infamous for undermining the science of global warming. But Mike Bennetts, CEO of giant petrol retailer Z Energy, is casting himself in a different role: climate activist. Well, kind of. In this launch episode of Stuff's new One Hot Minute podcast, Stuff's Climate Change editor Eloise Gibson looks into the paradox of an oil company boss who reckons everyone should actually be buying less of his company's product. In 1991, California funk-rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers released their Warner Bros debut record Blood Sugar Sex Magick to massive commercial and critical acclaim. Though the band flourished, this newfound success took a toll on guitarist John Frusciante, who was uncomfortable with the extra attention, and quit the band mid-tour in a depression.Determined to continue onward, the Chili Peppers recruited Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro to record their next record, but amidst singer Anthony Kiedis' relapse into drug addiction, and Navarro's own awkwardly-fitting presence in the group, the resulting album was a decidedly darker and hazier effort. One Hot Minute was released in 1995 to critical confusion, lesser commercial success, and a series of unfortunate events that nearly broke the band up.On this episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz & Patrick team up with Cat Verlicco (The Knock-Ups/Salem Wolves/The Dick Pics) to decide for themselves whether One Hot Minute was an underrated gem, or a disastrous misstep for the Peppers.Local Music Feature: "Centipede" by Salem Wolves
